After speaking with Simon Sebag Montefiore a few weeks ago, I was inspired to list my top 10 families of world history. Join me as I list them from 10 to 1, with links to books that you can read if you'd like to explore further. Of course Sebag's book, The World is hugely recommended. Chris Silagyi - 20/20, The Redskins, The Furys, The ExTeens - in conversation with David Eastaugh 20/20 was an American power pop band based in Hollywood, California. They were active from 1977 to 1983 - Allen decided to move to Los Angeles in 1977 after fellow Tulsa natives Phil Seymour and Dwight Twilley met with success. Once in Los Angeles, Allen met with Mike Gallo (singer/songwriter/keyboardist/drummer), who had already conceived of the idea and name for the band (after having spent time in the UK). Gallo first started writing with Allen, and later auditioned Allen's friend from Tulsa, Ron Flynt, for 20/20. Between the release of the single, and their first LP on Portrait Records, Chris Silagyi joined the band as a keyboardist.

His three tenures with the Denver Broncos totaled 14 years and brought the city back to back Super Bowl Championships. Mike Shanahan's other 24 years of coaching had stops in Oklahoma, Eastern Illinois (D2 Championship), Northern Arizona, Minnesota, Florida, LA Raiders, San Francisco 49'ers (Super Bowl XXIX), and (then) Washington Redskins. In the college ranks, Mike moved up the ladder with ease. In the pros, he moved up through the years, however there were a few setbacks along the way with firings in LA, Denver and Washington. No matter how each stint ended, he gained perspective and learned at every stop in his career. Mike deservedly earned a spot in the Broncos Ring of Fame and should have a bust in Canton, Ohio. Hopefully someday.

The first podcast of November delivers a lot of sports heat as I've got lots to get off my chest on this latest edition. On deck: (3:40) The Houston Astros have finally reached the MLB mountaintop after losing in 2019 and last year as they capture their second title in six years. I'll recap the final four games of the series. Are they a modern baseball dynasty? As for the Phillies, there were two moves by the manager, Rob Thomson, that'll make you question well into the winter of what could've been if he didn't pull his starters in Games 4 & 6. Now that the World Series is complete, we can focus in on free agency. The Mets have re-signed closer Edwin Diaz to a record breaking contract. Was he worth the nine figure deal? (28:19) If you've listened to me over the weeks, months and years, you know I call it like I see it. As we approach the midway point of the NFL season, I wasn't going to wait another week to make this official. The first nine weeks have been an ABOMINATION! I go into great detail as to why that's the case and how this has been a season to forget. I'll share my thoughts on some of the key trades made at the deadline last week, the sale of the Washington Commanders, and the untimely deaths of Hall of Fame punter, Ray Guy. As well as, one time Hog of the Redskins offensive line, Dave Butz. (47:26) Georgia showed the nation who's the #1 team in college football. They suffocated the Tennessee Volunteers offense as they shut down their high octane offense on Saturday. There was also a huge loss by the Clemson Tigers as they get bounced by Notre Dame and Alabama loses their second game of the year, and in all likelihood, a shot at the college football playoff. I'll take a look at the college landscape as to who'll be in the running to play in the Final Four come New Year's Eve. (54:08) The NBA has a full blown soap opera that's running 24/7 it seems. It's called the Brooklyn Nets. The past week exemplified how from one day to the next, they've become a daily TV drama. From the firing of coach Steve Nash, to the rumors of signing former assistant and Celtics coach, Ime Udoka, the controversy surrounding Kyrie Irving posting on social media about a film with anti-semetic themes which led to a five game suspension, have made this franchise a three ring circus yet again. I'll talk about how well the Cavaliers have played after losing the first game and are on an eight game winning streak. (1:04:56) The Bruins averted a public relations disaster as they signed, then released 2020 prospect Mitchell Miller, who was convicted of bullying and racially abusing a kid many years ago. Was this justified? The Penguins have hit the skids as they're mired in a seven game losing streak. Does Sidney Crosby and company still have what it takes to be an elite team? And congratulations on another goal scoring milestone to Alexander Ovechkin becoming the all time leader in goals scored for one franchise at 787. Joined today by wrestling legend, Jumping Jim Brunzell. Jim and I talk about growing up in Minnesota, walking on and playing football for MU, the Vikings and some must try foods in the "Twin Cities". Jim talks about his fandom for Bruce Springsteen, his new music and how hearing a song from “The Boss” on the radio turned into a friendship (one sided) that has lasted over 40 years. We chat about trying out for the Redskins and how that led to his former QB and friend Greg Gagne talking him into trying out to be a professional wrestler. We hear about his first wrestling camp with Verne Gagne and working out with the likes of Ric Flair, the Iron Shiek and Ken Patera. Jim recounts the grueling wrestling schedule he had, tag-teaming in the NWA/ AWA, fighting all over the world and leaving the territories to join Vince McMahon and the WWF. We learn about how cool it was when Jim first saw his action figure, how he met Brian Blair, how the "Killer Bees" started and where they got their first costumes. Jim shares how Hulk Hogan was his hype man before joining the WWF, the highs of wrestling at WrestleMania 3 and the lows of never being crowned tag team champions despite being promised the belts. We go over the mental adversity he faced when he wasn't a star anymore, why he wished he retired early and life on the independent scene. Jim tells us a hilarious Andre the Giant story, touches on the biggest pranksters in the locker room and sadly the untimely deaths of many wrestling legends. I have talked about a lot about great stories in baseball where players have come back from harrowing circumstances, but given football season is in full swing I thought I'd highlight some of the greatest personal comebacks from that great sport. There are so many to choose from because, frankly, anyone who plays for 8-10 years in the NFL survives a lot of pain and setbacks. Today I highlight Alex Smith who not only bounced back from being pushed out of the starting quarterback job on multiple teams and then suffered a terrible broken leg in 2018. After surgery he developed an infection in the leg that spread through his bloodstream. He had to endure 16 more surgeries to save his leg and his life yet he came back for one more year and led the Redskins to the playoffs. With Alijah Vera-Tucker wowing onlookers as he bounces from one offensive line spot to another, we reached out to former Jets right tackle, left tackle and Redskins guard Jason Fabini for his thoughts. We also asked Fabini for his initial impressions on rookie cornerback Sauce Gardner and the current state of the team.
The Washington NFL franchise has been in existence nearly as long as the Bears but they've won more Super Bowls (though fewer total championships) and been much more racist. Their first owner was forced to integrate his team or be denied access to his new stadium, and they had a coach who likely was only pretending to be Native American (no, not Joe Gibbs). The guys look back at the glory days of both franchises (they were both good in the '40s and '80s) and long stretches of bad. The two have shared coaches over the years for better or worse. The Bears have had surprisingly bad recent luck against Washington, and by recent we mean the last SIXTEEN games going back three decades. The Redskins kicked off the Bears dominant era in the mid-80s and then ended it...twice. So kick back and enjoy a breezy look at 90 years of matchups between the two franchises. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/desipio/message

Today's guest on the Mushroom Society Series on the Coach and Coordinator Podcast is with retired NFL Coach Al Saunders. Coach Saunders began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at USC under John McKay from 1970–71 and served as receivers coach for the University of Missouri's Fiesta Bowl team in 1972. Saunders spent 1973 through 1975 as a play-caller and offensive backfield coach at Utah State. He then spent six seasons as assistant head coach/offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at the University of California. He guided the Golden Bears to set 32 NCAA, conference, and school records and finished each season ranked in the top ten in the nation in passing. His final collegiate stop was in 1982 as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach under Johnny Majors at the University of Tennessee where he built an explosive, record-setting offense. His first NFL head coaching position came with the San Diego Chargers as interim head coach in 1986 following the resignation of Don Coryell. He spent two full seasons as the Chargers' head coach after previously working as receivers coach in 1983-84 and assistant head coach in 1985-86 for what was one of the most prolific offenses in the history of modern football. In 1985, San Diego's "Air Coryell" led the NFL in passing and total offense for an unprecedented fifth time in six years. From 1989 until 1998, Saunders was with the Kansas City Chiefs. Saunders worked for 10 winning seasons under the highly respected head coach Marty Schottenheimer again as a part of a top-performing offense. Saunders joined the St. Louis Rams coaching staff under the legendary Dick Vermeil. Serving as associate head coach and receivers coach with the Rams (1999-2000), he helped create one of the most dynamic and explosive offenses that the NFL had ever seen, and eventually helped lead the Rams to a Super Bowl XXXIV victory. Leading the NFL in virtually every significant offensive category, "The Greatest Show on Turf" established numerous NFL records for scoring and offensive production. When Vermeil came out of retirement in 2001, Saunders reunited with his old mentor and former team, the Kansas City Chiefs, as the assistant head coach/offensive coordinator until Vermeil's final retirement in 2006. Under Saunders' direction as coordinator, the Chiefs offense was the most productive unit in the entire NFL during that 5-year span. 46 franchise records for offense production were established and no team scored more points (2,175), gained more yards (30,470), or scored more touchdowns (262) during that time. Coach Saunders was ranked as the #1 Offensive Coordinator in the past 25 years in the NFL by ESPN and in 2005, and was named USA Today's Offensive Coach of the Year. Coach Saunders finished out his career as an assistant with Redskins, Rams, Ravens, Raiders, Dolphins, and retired after his stint with the Cleveland Browns Shownotes: -Start with John McKay -Being organized -Don't tell - Teach -Treat everyone as a number one draft choice -The job of a coach is to make all players the best they can be -You can't teach experience -Create an environment people enjoy being in -Take the positive environment and enthusiasm to the field -How the best approach the game -Dealing with your coaches -Developing a top offense -Don't ask players to do what they can't do -Protecting the QB Link to all Mushroom Society Episodes and COOL Clinic Speakers: https://soundcloud.com/user-804678956/sets/the-c-o-o-l-clinic-speakers Learn from COOL Clinic Coaches: https://coachtube.com/coolclinic

Biden currently sits at 99 executive orders since taking office. His torrent pace came primarily within his first year, when he issued more than any president since the 1970s. Memos show at least one outside left-wing group financed by millions from liberal billionaire George Soros has influenced some of Biden's orders and regulatory items. A budgetary impact analysis, meanwhile, accompanies each order but does not include actual monetary costs. Instead, they contain vague language such as whether an order will have no impact, increase or decrease federal costs. This makes it difficult to pinpoint the actual price tag of Biden's actions. However, a federal budget expert told Fox News Digital that they estimate the costs to be north of $1 trillion. "President Biden's executive actions have cost taxpayers more than $1 trillion so far," the Heritage Foundation's Matthew Dickerson told Fox News Digital in an interview. "That's taking into account the recent student loan executive action, which could cost up to $1 trillion." Biden's student loan forgiveness is a large chunk of the costs. In August, he announced plans to forgive $10,000 in student debt for borrowers making less than $125,000 annually, while Pell Grant recipients will receive $20,000 in handouts if their income falls below $125,000. The student loan handout was initially estimated to cost taxpayers upwards of $500 billion, but a recent Penn Wharton Budget Model analysis shows it could reach upwards of $1 trillion. Inflation is even impacting the U.S. Army, which recently released guidance for soldiers as they fight inflation, including a suggestion that they take advantage of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as food stamps. A vast majority of Biden's executive orders came within his first year in office. During that time, he issued 77 orders -- more than any president since Gerald Ford's 1970s administration, an American Action Forum (AAF) study found. https://www.foxnews.com/politics/mayor-eric-adams-says-nyc-considering-legal-action-against-texas-response-migrant-buses Mayor Eric Adams says NYC considering legal action against Texas in response to migrant buses New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Sunday that the city is considering taking legal action against Texas over the busloads of migrants sent from the Lone Star State to the Big Apple. "Our legal team is looking at legal challenges we could do with Texas," the Democrat told CBS 2. "We believe there are some options we have, because when you involuntarily place someone on a bus, we believe that actually skates the law… We're not leaving any stones unturned to make sure that New Yorkers are [not] being treated in an unfair way." This comes as more buses arrived in New York City from Texas Sunday morning. Adams has also suggested the city may use cruise ships to house the thousands of migrants who have been entering homeless shelters in the city. He said former mayor Mike Bloomberg considered cruise ships as temporary housing to address homelessness but never followed through. Since May, at least 11,000 migrants have entered the city’s homeless shelters, including 2,500 who arrived on buses sent by Texas. New York City has opened 23 emergency shelters and is expected to open an additional 38, Adams said. In other TV interviews on Sunday, Adams called on Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott to at least notify the city about migrant buses being sent. City Hall officials called Abbott’s office and asked to coordinate the arrival of buses to allow time to contact family members and sponsors of new arrivals and to prepare shelter space. Abbott has said Texas will continue sending buses of migrants to sanctuary cities like New York City, Washington, D.C. and Chicago until the federal government secures the southern border. Fox News' Bill Melugin said a Department of Homeland Security source reported that the El Paso, Texas, sector experienced 1,967 illegal crossings with only 335 Title 42 expulsions during a 24-hour window from Saturday to Sunday. Adams said in two additional TV interviews on Sunday that Abbott and Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis, who flew migrants to Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts, were relocating migrants as a distraction from their "erosions of basic human rights," citing the Republicans' stances on abortion and guns. https://bongino.com/more-illegals-are-heading-to-martha-s-vineyard-soon More Illegals Are Heading to Martha's Vineyard Soon Martha's Vineyard may have become the first place in the United States to achieve a 100% deportation rate last week - but more could be coming soon. https://rumble.com/v1kln51-florida-lt-gov.-hints-marthas-vineyard-libs-are-about-to-get-more-bad-news.html - Play Video Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is promising more flights packed with illegal aliens will be sent to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. and other liberal enclaves. During a press conference last week, DeSantis vowed to Floridians that he will send more flights of illegal aliens to the homes of the Democrat party’s wealthiest communities. The remarks came after the "all are welcome" crowd in Martha's Vineyard brought in the national guard to deport an illegal alien population (50) that amounted to 0.28% of the island's total population (17,265). Oddly, while the residents of Martha's Vineyard said that they didn't have the infrastructure to accommodate them, they do have the infrastructure to accommodate tourists over the summer, when the island's population balloons to nearly 200,000. https://rumble.com/v1kapfv-marthas-vineyard-libs-are-panicking-over-50-illegal-aliens.html - Play Video Oh well there you heard it from one of the locals… We were also told that Martha's Vineyard didn't have any employment options available for the illegals, which is in stark contrast to the argument that they're willing to do the jobs that Americans apparently "won't do" - and also the island's local paper, which lists over 50 low-skilled job openings. Buckle up for this one as we go down to “The Swamp” to hear how one amazing man has gone from gridiron folklore fame to now creating massive IMPACT in impoverished communities. It's time to meet Danny Wuerffel. Danny is a 1996 Heisman Trophy winner and former QB for the University of Florida Gators (who won 4-SEC championships and a national championship while under center as a quarterback and Head Coach Steve Spurrier at the helm). He is now an extraordinary community leader, father, husband, and IMPACT creator. Literally. Despite all his accolades, you're going to hear one of the most humble servant-leaders you will ever listen to. And what he has done in the last 2-decades to give back and serve underprivileged communities is nothing short of amazing. You're going to feel Danny's caring heart and his passion & purpose to serve people through his “Desire Street Ministries” throughout this episode. His Desire Street Ministries supports under-resourced neighborhood leaders to positively influence their communities through leadership training, economic development, and spiritual and educational resources. Specifically, here are some of the things Danny and I talk about on today's SHOW: - The pivotal game that earned Danny the Heisman Trophy and what happened when he played against Peyton Manning in college. - Top lessons learned from U of Florida Head Coach Steve Spurrier. - Your identity as a 20-year-old young man and where/how he kept his focus and priorities straight. - Why he is passionate about building relationships with struggling communities and his desire to create opportunities and coach leaders to resurrect under-resourced neighborhoods. - SoulCare - his vision to help people with burnout and how that works. - Danny's best practices allow him to operate as his best self. - Going deeper in faith and why that's important to him. Wuerffel set 17 NCAA and UF records, led the nation in touchdown passes, earned the SEC Player of the Year title and culminated his career with the coveted Heisman Trophy in 1996, exactly 30 years after his legendary coach had won the distinguished award. Danny's 3.7 GPA and leadership off the field awarded him the Campbell Award presented to the nation's top scholar athlete, one of only two athletes to earn both the Heisman and the Campbell Award. During his NFL years with the Saints, Danny volunteered after practice with Desire Street Ministries, serving in New Orleans' Ninth Ward, a neighborhood ranked by HUD as one of the worst in the country. He felt so strongly about the pivotal role Desire Street plays in reshaping communities he became their Executive Director following his NFL career with the Packers, Bears and Redskins.
