A Rockford Democrat in the Illinois House is pushing legislation to ban the use of Indigenous mascots in schools, citing their offensive nature and impact on Native American students' well-being. The bill targets names like Redskins, Braves, and Indians, prohibiting logos depicting Native Americans or using symbols like feathered headdresses. Schools have until September 1, 2028, to phase out such mascots. The Illinois Association of School Boards raises cost concerns, labeling it an unfunded mandate for over 50 schools. Despite these challenges, the bill has cleared the committee and is poised for a House vote this week. The Illinois Association of School Boards has voiced concern over the bill, as they argued it would be an expensive mandate for over 50 high schools across the state.   State Representative Dan Swanson (R-Alpha) brought up fact the legislation is another unfunded mandate on these schools that is full of concerns and inconsistencies.

What happens when a beloved sports identity collides with evolving cultural awareness? In this candid conversation with Papamutes, Jack Moore—host of Moore to Consider podcast and lifelong Washington football fan—takes us on a journey through the controversial transition from Redskins to Commanders.Moore offers a fascinating historical perspective on the team's origins, tracing the Redskins name back to 1932 when the franchise began as the Boston Braves before moving to Washington in 1937. He explains how the iconic Indian head logo came to be, designed by Walter "Blackie" Wetzel of the Blackfeet Nation and based on the profile that appeared on the Buffalo nickel. This history provides crucial context for understanding why many fans felt deeply connected to the original identity. The conversation doesn't shy away from the complexities surrounding Native American representation in sports. Moore references polls showing mixed opinions within Native communities, shares stories of students on reservations proudly wearing Redskins gear, and discusses the contrasting example of Florida State's partnership with the Seminole Tribe. These nuances highlight why the debate transcends simple categorizations of right and wrong.Perhaps most compelling is Moore's personal story as a fan who witnessed the team's evolution—from attending the first game at RFK Stadium in 1969 to seeing the stadium filled with opposing fans in recent years. His emotional connection to players like Art Monk, Darrell Green, and Sonny Jurgensen demonstrates how team identities become intertwined with our personal histories and memories.Whether you're a football historian, a Washington fan, or someone interested in the intersection of sports and cultural identity, this episode provides valuable perspective on one of the most significant rebranding stories in professional sports. How do we balance tradition with progress? Who gets to decide when a name becomes unacceptable? Nattering E Trades #11: The Worst Picks Trade In NFL What Could Have Been

Welcome back to another episode of Nattering E Trades, your home on Visionaries Global Media for all things trades in sports. After spending the first 10 episodes navigating our way through both how trades work, and the NFL, today will be the final chapter on the NFL. I had a suggestion from a friend about doing a series on the 15 players that went ahead of our Number One best draft day trade Jerry Rice in the 1985 NFL Draft, but that will come at a later date. After today we'll be switching it up to Nattering E At The Movies for next week, and then do a quick show on that 1985 draft, before going into the NBA for more trade magic. Heck we might even discuss the Orlando Magic and some of the trades that have depicted their franchise for better or worse. Today, however, we enter episode 11 seeking to answer one question, E what is the worst NFL draft pick trade on draft day? Now as you know, this list is entirely subjective, as any one of the three worst trades could have been number one on a sports company's site. They also might not even be on any site's radar. Today our number one pick in the Worst Draft Trades in the history of the NFL is number three on NFL.com's list of the worst draft day trades. If you recall in episode 10, we discussed how former Chicago Bears legend and Head Coach Mike Ditka essentially tarnished his own reputation with the Ricky Williams deal that saw the New Orleans Saints trade all nine of their draft picks to the Washington Commanders formerly Redskins for the fifth overall selection to take Williams. Now, you're probably thinking, wait, Eric, there's a deal worse than this. And it involves the Washington franchise? Well, friends, colleagues, neighbors, and diehard sports fans I'm afraid it does. So let us get into it. #1. The worst Draft Day Trade involves draft picks. Washington trades up to get Robert Griffin III in a deal with the St. Louis Rams and the LA Rams. Episode 290 of “The Sports Experience Podcast” is here & we're continuing our block on some of the NFL's best postseason games of all time.In this episode we're discussing the 1983 NFC Championship between the Washington Redskins and the San Francisco 49ers.Expectations were high for a game which featured the Super Bowl champions from the previous two seasons.Washington dominated the first half of play with their defense, and led San Francisco 7-0 at half time. The lead could have been bigger had kicker Mark Moseley not had an off day.Washington took a commanding 21-0 lead by the time the third quarter ended thanks to a touchdown run by John Riggins and touchdown catch by “Downtown” Charlie Brown. At that point, all appeared lost for the 49ers until Joe Montana led a furious comeback. In just over eight minutes, Montana threw three touchdown passes to tie the game with 7:08 to play.Washington then went on a drive which lasted 6:12, and were assisted by two controversial penalties by San Francisco's Eric Wright and Ronnie Lott.It all came down to Moseley, who had missed four field goals in the game, to make a 25 yard field goal to put the Redskins ahead 24-21. Moseley drilled the kick and Washington was off to Super Bowl XVIII in Tampa.Connect with us on Instagram!Chris Quinn: @cquinncomedyDominic DiTolla: @ditolladominicProducer: @ty_englestudioInstagram: @thesportsexperiencepodcastIf you enjoy this podcast, please help support us @:https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-sports-experience-pod/support#sportspodcast#comedypodcast #washingtonredskins#sanfranciscofortyniners#nflplayoffs
