Welcome to another episode of Beats Vines & Life, where we blend the soundtrack of Gen X culture with stories from the heart of American wine country. This time, the conversation focused on the Great American Wine Tour—a journey crisscrossing Napa, Willamette, the Finger Lakes, Texas Hill Country, Virginia, and beyond to uncover the most remarkable wines made right here in the USA.One concept discussed was the uniquely American spirit of winemaking—a landscape not bound by centuries-old European traditions but shaped by innovation, passion, and diverse backgrounds. The discussion explored the personal stories, the craft, and the people behind iconic wineries like Silver Oak, Rombauer, Seghesio, and the up-and-coming Gagnon & Kennedy, spotlighting how American winemakers pave their own paths and redefine what excellence looks (and tastes) like.A key theme that emerged was wine as the great connector: a bridge between music, lifestyle, and community, and a medium for conversation, discovery, and shared experience. The episode delved into everything from wine criticism and the meaning of authenticity, to the playful rivalry over pork roll in New Jersey, and the essential truth that wine should be approachable, fun, and—above all—a source of joy.So pour a glass, settle in, and get ready to meet the people and hear the stories behind the bottles that are transforming the American wine landscape—no pretense, just great conversation, a bit of humor, a lot of heart, and a soundtrack only Gen X could curate.Watch The Great American Wine Tour on YouTube click the link!Follow Keith on IG!Follow VinePair on IG!____________________________________________________________Until next time, cheers to the mavericks, philosophers, deep thinkers, and wine drinkers! In this episode, we sit down with lawyer and activist Abraham Hamra for an unfiltered conversation about identity, survival, and the political reality of being a Mizrahi Jew in the West. Abraham shares his powerful story of growing up in Damascus, where his family was part of a persecuted Jewish minority held as political hostages under the Syrian Assad regime. From his lived experiences in the Middle East to confronting modern campus activism and local government complacency in New York, Abraham doesn't hold back. This week: Sydney weather as business class: once you've had it, going back to coach is brutal….and the ethics of putting your dog to sleep, covered in the first four minutes. We went to Cybele Malinowski's photography show “Deep Fake”, portraits of Las Vegas celebrity impersonators, including the story of one MJ impersonator who took a homeless man under his wing and taught him the craft. Plus our Vegas stories: Ione at the Hard Rock Hotel opening in the early 90s with Sofia Coppola, Stephen Dorff and Zoe Cassavetes (the politics of free chips for famous people), and Ben waking up at Lollapalooza 93 to what may be the worst smell in human history. We hung with Fruit Bats' Eric D. Johnson: his song is going viral on TikTok across American college campuses, and he shared a piece of songwriting wisdom we can't stop thinking about. Ben is processing his hair transplant fork in the road. We fell down an Etsy witches rabbit hole. And we had a full psychic moment playing Rummy Tiles. Weirder Together is officially calling it: collective Joan Armatrading rediscovery moment incoming.

This week on Page 7, MJ and Jackie are joined by LPN's very own sloppy steak lover Amber Nelson as Jakzig stops by to serenade after their debut performance on "Last Stream" this past Tuesday! Amber's schoolin' eeeerrybody on the origins of punk, MJ's here to remind everyone 'bout The Curse of The Lil Rascals! (not to mention just the curse of being a child actor in general) Speakin' of child stars, Ariana Grande got a tattoo to match Ricky Alvarez because that's what a totally rational person does. Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell apparently had some hot takes about Disney Adults that upset people, but there's also an issue with weirdo adults creepin' on the Disney character actors at the park, SO SOME CRITICISCM IS NEEDED MAN. Kaia Gerber told everyone she was possessed as a kid and had to have a digeridoo exorcism performed on her by order of her momma Cindy Crawford, so...that's also totally normal. And then we got us a LIST of "15 Celebrities Who Exposed The Rude, Weird, And Seriously Questionable Things Other Stars Said To Them In Private", followed by BLINDZ, then it's onto a meatsynced Jackie's Snackies starting @ 01:12:04 followed by more MEAT FLAVOR during MJ's Minute Munchies @ 01:17:47 until @ 01:23:27, PLUS SO MUCH MORE!!!! What is it about a bookstore? You walk in planning to browse for a few minutes, and somehow an hour later you're still wandering the stacks with an armful of books you can't seem to put down. For this week's episode, our guest host, MJ Franklin, and the producer Sarah Diamond take a field trip to a local bookstore, McNally Jackson Seaport, at the southern tip of Manhattan. There, they talk with the owner, Sarah McNally, about what it's actually like to run a bookstore. Then MJ sits down with Jennifer Harlan, an editor at the Book Review, to talk about The Times's new bookstore crawl series, the bookstores she grew up loving and why bookshops seem to be having a moment. Of course, no bookstore episode would be complete without some book recommendations. MJ and Jen share some of their favorite books about bookstores and booksellers, including a romance set in a small-town bookshop and a memoir about living inside Shakespeare and Company in Paris. Books discussed on this episode: “Switzy,” by Emma Cline “Delicate Edible Birds,” by Lauren Groff “Book Lovers,” by Emily Henry “Monogamy,” by Sue Miller “Time Was Soft There: A Paris Sojourn at Shakespeare and Co.,” by Jeremy Mercer “The Bookshop: A History of the American Bookstore,” by Evan Friss “A Marvelous Light,” by Freya Marske “The Rachel Incident,” by Caroline O'Donoghue Listen to and Follow ‘The Book Review' Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Amazon Music | YouTube | iHeartRadio Unlock full access to New York Times podcasts and explore everything from politics to pop culture. Day two on the Oregon Coast Trail takes us south from Nehalem Bay for a day dominated by beach walking, a tiny boat crossing, unexpected rain, relentless headwinds and the discovery that not all sand is created equal. What initially looks like an easier day turns into nearly 11 challenging miles, and convincing proof that MJ and I might actually be backpackers after all. My Tent is Not Viable! Because this pod has become all Oregon Coast all the time (and no, spoiler… more to come) I have to share yet another special creation. Newly minted Pedalshift listener and merch designer Simone was so moved by the Brock and Tim Sprocketshift disaster of night 1 that she created a special design just for the two of us… yes, my tent is not viable has now been memorialized on an ornament. But you have to see it in the shownotes at pedalshift.net. It features the classic line and… because of course… a flooded tent. Plus the new Pedalshift logo, which you might get to see soon on other things! COMING SOON. Super excited to show you what we've been working on! Go check out the special edition my tent is not viable design and more Simone's designs at her Etsy shop… link in the shownotes! Live Show! Friday September 11th, 5pm PT - 8pm ET Topics TBA, but it's a summer closeout and certainly a preview of some stuff coming in the fall. ALSO we're doing a super fun giveaway exclusively for people that make it to the live show itself… there's some incentive for ya! ALSO ALSO, some special previews of all sorts of things. Am I being cagey? YES. Show up anyways! Chat room is fun, live shows are fun… but if you can't make it, it's the pod for the following week. pedalshift.net/live! Email reminders coming too. Maybe some previews of my previews? Who knows? Sign up at the site. Oregon Coast Trail – Part 2 Breaking camp at Nehalem Bay State Park after a less-than-restful first night. The day's route comes with an unusual Oregon Coast Trail feature: a small boat crossing of the Nehalem River. Hiking out the Nehalem Bay spit rather than road walking Highway 101 or relying on another bus. A $10, on-demand boat ride that you essentially hail like a water taxi. Naturally, Tim is delighted. Early beach walking into a surprisingly strong south wind—and the realization that hiking into a headwind can be plenty annoying too. Overcast, cool Oregon Coast weather turns out to be pretty much perfect hiking weather for Tim and James. Then the rain finally arrives. Rain gear gets its first legitimate test as wind, rain and cold hands briefly turn the morning into some genuine Type 2 fun. Reaching the mouth of the Nehalem River, where ocean waves, river current and fishing boats all converge. Calling for the boat and crossing the Nehalem River to continue south. Boat-crossing soundscapes, fishing stories and a little local wildlife discussion along the way. An unexpected rail walk after the crossing, followed by some improvised navigation back toward the beach. The terminology of the trip is established: good sand is firm and easy to walk on; bad sand is soft, energy-sucking nonsense. Continuing south toward Rockaway Beach with sea stacks appearing down the coast. Sustained headwinds approaching 20 mph turn what should have been a helpful prevailing wind into an all-day adversary. Rockaway Beach provides a badly needed break from the wind—and Indian food for the day's big meal. Back into full rain gear for the final push toward Barview Jetty. Headwinds + rain + bad sand = a surprisingly demanding backpacking day. Despite the conditions, Tim and James finish just shy of 11 miles. Another successful test for the new backpacking gear, including Tim's Hyperlite Southwest 40. Arriving at Barview Jetty Campground thoroughly cooked and very ready for dry clothes and tents. The campsite itself gets mixed reviews, particularly when Tim discovers that "level tent site" is apparently more of an aspirational concept. Day two verdict: challenging, fun and another successful proof of concept. Bigger conclusion: Tim and James may officially be backpackers again—and longer trips suddenly seem entirely plausible. This episode is sponsored by Better Help – Go to https://betterhelp.com/super and see if Better Help is right for you. Spider-Man: Brand New Day leaves us with one HUGE question: Does Ned actually remember Peter Parker? In the movie's final moments, Peter finally reintroduces himself to his old best friend — and their secret handshake seems to unlock something in Ned's memory. But is he actually remembering Peter, or has he simply figured out that Peter is Spider-Man? Today J is diving into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and breaking down all the clues, from Ned's suspiciously familiar knowledge of Spider-Man to his history with magic, MJ's lingering instincts, and one VERY important encounter with the Hulk that may prove Doctor Strange's spell has some major loopholes. Because if Ned can remember Peter... maybe MJ can too. #SpiderMan #Marvel #MCU

The Paul Bennewitz Affair Paul Bennewitz was a successful businessman, pilot and electronics expert who lived near Kirtland Air Force Base and became convinced he was intercepting communications from extraterrestrials. What started with strange lights and bizarre radio signals quickly exploded into claims involving alien abductions, implants, underground bases, cattle mutilations, government-alien treaties, Dulce Base and even an underground war between humans and aliens. But the craziest part of the story may be what happened behind the scenes. Air Force intelligence figures, including Richard Doty, allegedly encouraged Bennewitz's beliefs and fed UFO disinformation into his investigation, possibly to keep him away from real classified military activity. Eventually, Bennewitz's obsession consumed his life and contributed to a severe mental breakdown. In this episode, we dig into Project Beta, Bennewitz's bizarre decoded alien messages, Myrna Hansen, cattle mutilations, alien implants, Dulce Base, the alleged government treaty, Phil Schneider's underground battle, MJ-12, William Moore and one of the strangest alleged government disinformation operations in UFO history.
