The largest student start-up programme in the country has been launched today in its 24th year. The Student Enterprise Programme, an initiative of the Local Enterprise Offices, has seen over 500,000 students take part since it began. The Student Enterprise Programme, which is funded by the Government of Ireland through Enterprise Ireland and delivered by the 31 Local Enterprise Offices in local authorities throughout the country, saw over 30,000 students from almost 500 secondary schools across the country take part in 2024/2025. Participating students will compete across three categories, Junior (1st year), Intermediate (2nd and 3rd year) and Senior (4th, 5th and 6th year, LVA, LCA and Youth Outreach). Each student enterprise is challenged with creating, setting up and running their own business, which must show viable sales of their service or product. The best student start-ups from each school will then progress to county and regional finals. Students will then be chosen to be selected for the National Finals on the 7th May, where the Student Enterprise of the Year for 2026 will be named, along with winners across the other categories. Gareth Evans, Chair of the Enterprise Education Committee, Local Enterprise Offices, said, "The Student Enterprise Programme really highlights the appetite for entrepreneurship within our school system. In recent years, we have seen a steady increase in participation year on year. There have been some amazing start-ups come out of Ireland, punching well above their weight internationally, and I think this is helping to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs here. "Irrespective of what these students go on to do in their lives they will have learned some invaluable skills taking part in this programme that will help them in their future careers. We're looking forward to seeing what the Student Enterprise Programme Class of 2026 put forward!" The second Alumni Achievement Award for the Student Enterprise Programme will also be handed out in May. The award celebrates former programme participants who have gone on to achieve exceptional success in business. The inaugural award went to sisters Kate and Annie Madden from Fenu Health. Participants in the Student Enterprise Programme in 2016, the company creates supplements for equine health and their customers include five royal families. This year will also see a new award with a Start-Up Stories Competition. This competition is for Junior Cycle students only, and it asks them to imagine themselves as an entrepreneur at a future stage of their lives, having set up a business. Students are asked to write their fictitious story of how they became an entrepreneur, came up with their idea, got funding, overcame obstacles, lessons learned and skills they needed. The objective is to get students thinking and developing ideas around entrepreneurship. The Student Enterprise of the Year for 2025 was "Cannon PC" from Clonkeen College, Dun Laoghaire in County Dublin. The start-up, created by student Jack Cannon, built upcycled high-speed gaming PCs from old PCs being disposed of in office clear-outs and for general sale online. Cannon PC achieved €40,000 in sales while also saving 1,000 kg of e-waste every year. For more information on the programme, visit https://www.studententerprise.ie/. Episode 60. AJ Climate Champions with Hattie Hartman and Joe Jack Williams. In this episode, we take a deep dive into building with timber. Haggart shares numerous tips for practices just getting started. Early engagement with the supply chain and getting the right engineer are essential. Efficient use of timber is essential, as is designing for longevity and adaptability by getting column grids right and incorporating ‘soft spots' where connections between floors can be introduced at a later date. Managing moisture by designing out wet trades is just as critical as fire risk. Haggart also explains how engineered timber structures can be designed for circularity. She sees a future of more manufacturer take-back schemes, rather than the current fledgling approach of one-to-one reuse between a host building and a donor building. Waugh Thistleton's Black & White Building recently won global recognition as a winner of the Built by Nature prize, recognised particularly for its efficient use of timber in both structure and facade and an informative LCA report which sets out the metrics behind the building in an engaging and accessible manner that others can learn from. Current projects in the pipeline include a twin office building for Lendlease on the Milan Expo site, a stone clad office tower in Maidenhead and collaboration with community housing practice We Can Make in Bristol. We are in the final week of the church year- about to head into Advent and the Christmas season! This week our sermon is based on Colossians 11:15, 20. The message is that our great King, Jesus, does not seem to be like the kings of this world, or any king we might imagine! He does not rule in pleasant gardens, showing us majesty in flowing velvet robes and golden crowns. He rules in humility, by doing his Father's will, and in bearing the worst of sufferings so that we can be closer to our loving God. This same King Jesus is the head of the Church, and we all live in his Body; through his servant heart we return to our fullest relationship with God. May we look for things that are not what they seem this week- examples of leadership through laying down of power, or selfless care that lifts someone lowly. This is the love and example of Jesus, alive in our world today. Amen. The sermon was written for LCA and read by Shane Rosenzweig.Support the show
Ecotextile Talks, host Philip Berman talks to Frank Michel, CEO of the ZDHC Foundation, about why he thinks cleaner chemistry is becoming a hard ESG requirement rather than a nice-to-have for the global textile value chain. They explore how ZDHC has evolved from its original Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (MRSL) focus into a broader nature-impact lens that links process chemistry to water quality, biodiversity, climate, and investor risk. Frank explains the thinking behind ZDHC's new impact framework, developed with environmental consultancy Quantis, which uses lifecycle assessment (LCA) and facility-level data to model how switching from conventional to ZDHC‑conformant chemicals can cut pollution indicators – with early pilots suggesting local reductions of 80–96% when compliant formulations replace non-compliant ones. They discuss why this work matters for ESG ratings, and why major rating agencies are now asking sharper questions about chemical risk, in an industry some investors increasingly compare to the fossil fuel one, from a risk perspective. https://www.roadmaptozero.com/zdhc-quantis-report-2025 How to subscribe to Ecotextile News https://www.ecotextile.com/membership-account/membership-levels/ Following Ecotextile Talks Ecotextile Talks is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, and wherever you listen to podcasts.

This week's Gospel reading Luke 21:5-19 reminds us of the ‘signs of the times'. Jesus is speaking to his followers of the trials they will endure to follow him as they wait for the fulfillment of God's kingdom on earth. This reading could be a worrying one- indeed these days even moreso, as we see nations going to war against nations, and terrible disasters all around the world. We might well be inclined to be fearful. However, Jesus reassures us as we read further. He does not say that we will not struggle or suffer in these days- instead he encourages us not to be afraid! He tells us that when we are persecuted we will have an opportunity to testify to him and his goodness, and that we will stand in God's wisdom- Jesus himself will give us the words to answer those who persecute us. May we stand firm in the faith that God has given us, gaining courage in the love we have experienced and that we know will carry us through great trials. Amen.Message prepared by LCA and presented by Bridgitte Willshire.Support the show

This week on Everybody in the Pool, we're rethinking how clothes, shoes—and even car interiors—get made without plastic. My guest is Maria Intscher-Owrang, CEO and co-founder of Simplifyber. Her innovation takes plant fibers + water, then forms finished 3D shapes in a single step—skipping spinning, weaving, cutting, and sewing. We get into:What's broken about fossil-based textiles (cost curves, subsidies, and why polyester took over)How Simplifyber's cellulose slurry + compression molding works—and why it cuts waste dramaticallyEarly results: an LCA showing up to 30× lower impact for shoe uppers vs. standard constructionPerformance and durability (including why these parts can survive sun/heat/humidity in car interiors)Unit economics: cost parity at scale via tooling (and why higher volumes matter)Beachhead products: GANNI “moon shoe” uppers and a Kia EV2 concept interior, now moving toward productionWhat this could mean for labor, local supply chains, and using regional feedstocks (cellulose everywhere)Links:Website Simplifyber: https://www.simplifyber.com/LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/maria-intscher-owrang-3278a07/All episodes: https://www.everybodyinthepool.com/What you can do to help: Subscribe to the Everybody in the Pool newsletter: https://www.mollywood.co/Become a member and get an ad-free version of the podcast: https://everybodyinthepool.supercast.com/ Hosted on Acast. Send me a messageIn this week's episode of the Sustainable Supply Chain Podcast, I sat down with Ollie Taylor, Founder & Director of Marine Futures, to talk about one of the toughest nuts to crack in sustainability, decarbonising the marine industry. Boats, big or small, don't often top climate discussions, yet their materials, manufacturing, and fuel use carry a hefty footprint.Ollie explains how Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) can reveal the true environmental cost of marine products, from resin to recycling, and why so many “green” designs turn out to be anything but. We unpack how his platform, Marine Shift 360, is helping designers and builders make data-led choices early in the design phase, where up to 80% of a product's total impact is decided. We also dive into the data problem: how poor visibility, outdated datasets, and supplier secrecy distort sustainability claims. Ollie argues that transparency, education, and automation are key to bringing LCA into the mainstream, making it as essential as CAD or CFD in engineering.Other highlights include the promise of circular design to stabilise volatile supply chains, the limits of regulation versus commercial pressure, and why profitability and sustainability must align for real progress. If you care about data-driven design, circularity, and cutting emissions at the source, this episode is worth your time.
