Patrick James Riley (born March 20, 1945) is an American professional basketball executive, former coach, and former player in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He has been the team president of the Miami Heat since 1995, and he also served as the team's head coach from 1995 to 2003 and again from 2005 to 2008.Often referred to as "the Godfather", Riley is regarded as one of the greatest NBA figures of all time both as a coach and executive. He has won five NBA championships as a head coach, four with the Los Angeles Lakers during their Showtime era in the 1980s and one with the Heat in 2006. Riley is a nine-time NBA champion across his tenures as a player (1972), assistant coach (1980), head coach (1982, 1985, 1987, 1988, 2006), and executive (2012, 2013). He is the first North American sports figure to win a championship as a player, as an assistant coach, as a head coach, and as an executive. Since the start of his NBA career through 2023, Riley has reached 19 NBA finals across six different decades,[1] making 25 percent of all NBA Finals as a player, coach, or executive.[2]Riley was named NBA Coach of the Year three times (1989–90, 1992–93 and 1996–97, as head coach of the Lakers, New York Knicks and Heat, respectively). He was head coach of an NBA All-Star Game team nine times: eight times with the Western Conference team (1982, 1983, 1985–1990, all as head coach of the Lakers) and once with the Eastern team (1993, as head coach of the Knicks). In 1996, he was named one of the 10 Greatest Coaches in NBA history. In 2008, Riley was inducted in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach.[3] He received the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award from the NBA Coaches Association on June 20, 2012.

In this week's basketball coaching conversation, Charlotte Hornets Assistant Coach DJ Bakker joins the Basketball Podcast to share insights on offensive concepts vs. switching.DJ Bakker is the Head Coach of the Greensboro Swarm and an Assistant Coach with the Charlotte Hornets, bringing over a decade of NBA coaching experience and a proven track record in player development and team success. In the 2024–25 season, Bakker led the Swarm to their first playoff appearance in franchise history, finishing with a 31–19 record—best in team history and fourth overall in the G League. Under his leadership, the Swarm ranked third in Defensive Rating, top five in Net Rating, and first in both Clutch Net Rating and Offensive Rating. His dual role with the Hornets included overseeing the development of young NBA talent, including 2024 sixth overall draft pick Tidjane Salaun.Before joining the Hornets organization, Bakker served as an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks during the 2023–24 season. He played a key role in shaping the team's offensive identity to maximize the strengths of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard, while also working individually with Khris Middleton and Malik Beasley. That season, the Bucks finished fifth in Offensive Rating and Bakker was part of the coaching staff for both the 2024 NBA All-Star Game and the playoffs. His G League success began with the Motor City Cruise, where he led the team to a 31–15 record in its inaugural season and a playoff berth, while developing five future NBA players.Bakker's coaching journey includes player development roles with the Detroit Pistons, Toronto Raptors, and Dallas Mavericks, where he worked with emerging stars like Pascal Siakam, Fred VanVleet, and OG Anunoby. He also served as an advance scout for the Orlando Magic and began his NBA career with the Chicago Bulls. On this episode of the SeventySix Capital Sports Leadership Show, Wayne Kimmel interviewed the Assistant AD for Sports Medicine at Villanova University & Former Trainer for the Philadelphia 76ers, Lenny Currier.Currier, who came to Villanova in 2003, serves as an Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Medicine. In this position, he is responsible for oversight of the Athletic Training staff that serves Villanova's 24 varsity sports. He was elevated to his current position in 2019 after serving as the Director of Sports Medicine from 2003-19. Currier also serves as the athletic trainer for the Villanova Men's Lacrosse team. Prior to coming to Villanova in 2003, Currier spent 14 years as an athletic trainer with two National Basketball Association franchises. From 1997-2003, he served as Head Athletic Trainer for the Philadelphia 76ers. He also served as the Head Athletic Trainer for the Orlando Magic from 1989-97. During his time in professional basketball, he twice served as an athletic trainer for the East at the NBA All-Star Game (1992 and 2002). In addition, Currier spent two summers as an athletic trainer with USA Basketball (1998-99) as pre-qualification for the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. From 1985-88 he served as an athletic trainer in Albuquerque, N.M. with the Triple A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Currier is a native of Newburyport, Mass., who received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Arizona State University and a Master of Science degree from the University of Arizona. He is a veteran of the United States Air Force who served a tour of duty in Vietnam. He makes his home in Philadelphia with his wife Lori and twin children, Brendan and Olivia.
