It's a story so wild we couldn't fit it into one podcast. If you're of a certain age, you probably remember Barry Bremen. In the late 70's, Barry was best known for dressing up as pro athletes and sneaking into televised sporting events…beginning with the 1979 NBA All-Star Game, where he shot layups on the court with stars like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Moses Malone. And while his “Great Imposter” persona brought him fame, an appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, and more adventures, Barry was also a totally normal family man…and a beloved dad. Bremen died of cancer in 2011, but his story didn't end there. In an encore of one of our favorite episodes of the year, “The Great Imposter and Me” reveals the most unbelievable part of the Barry Bremen story, which came long after he'd hung up his phony uniforms and disguises. Jeremy Schaap brings us this story in two parts, for ESPN Daily.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Back in Episode 14, we talked about the 1951 College Betting Scandal. Jack Molinas was involved in it all, but was never caught. A decade later, in 1961, there was a new betting scandal -- and this time, Molinas was the ringleader. A graduate of Columbia University, he was selected for the NBA All-Star Game as a rookie, and eventually became a lawyer. He had every opportunity to have a successful career in basketball and law, but he threw it all away because of his addiction to gambling. His lifestyle not only landed him in jail but also got him in trouble with mafia. ABOUT NYC POINT GODS PREMIERING FRIDAY JULY 29th AT 8PM AND PT ON SHOWTIMENYC POINT GODS Premieres Friday, July 29 @ 9PM ET/PT on SHOWTIME Directed By Sam EliadSubjects | Rafer Alston, Kenny Anderson, Mark Jackson, Stephon Marbury, God Shammgod, Kenny Smith, Rod Strickland and Dwayne "Pearl" WashingtonSYNOPSIS: The gritty blight of New York City in the '80s revealed a cultural resilience, one that ultimately birthed East Coast hip-hop and inspired a style of play on the basketball court that endures today. The elegance of the city's elite point guards, molded by the packed streetball courts, unwritten rules of bruising pickup games, and the perseverance required to survive everyday life, has come to define an era of basketball and American culture. Their transcendent style is etched in the consciousness of all who have witnessed these prodigies. The New York City point gods' lasting impact on the game of basketball can be seen around the world, in virtually every league. The film features a who's who of point guard deities: Rafer Alston, Kenny Anderson, Mark Jackson, Stephon Marbury, God Shammgod, Kenny Smith, Rod Strickland and Dwayne "Pearl" Washington. They brought theatrics, dizzying ball control, stylish misdirection, and a shake-and-bake game from the asphalt to the city's hallowed high school gyms and to the NBA, orchestrating successful offenses at every level. NYC POINT GODS explores not just how the city shaped these distinct players, but how these wunderkinds shaped and advanced the game under their watch, and whose impact continues to shape the game today. Here's the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnzzi0QDK-wKENNY ANDERSON BIOKenny "Chibbs" Anderson played his high school ball at Archbishop Malley HS. After a college career at Georgia Tech, he played point guard professionally from 1991 to 2006, mostly in the National Basketball Association.Anderson was selected by the New Jersey Nets with the second pick in the 1991 NBA Draft. He was the youngest player in the league at that time. He averaged seven points, two rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. They brought theatrics, dizzying ball control, stylish misdirection and a shake-and-bake game from the asphalt to the city's hallowed high school gyms and to the NBA, orchestrating successful offenses at every level. The pic features extensive interviews and rare footage of the point guards, plus prominent New York voices including Stephen A. Smith, Cam'ron, Fat Joe and college coaches Lou Carnesecca, Jim Boeheim and Rick Pitino.Said Durant, a two-time NBA champion and the league's 2014 MVP, "Everyone knows an NYC point guard when they see them, and the point gods of this film were instrumental in changing the game for everyone."Here's the official logline: "The gritty blight of New York City in the '80s revealed a cultural resilience, one that ultimately birthed East Coast hip-hop and inspired a style of play on the basketball court that endures today. The New York City point gods' lasting impact on the game of basketball can be seen around the world, in virtually every league."NYC Point Gods is executive produced by Coodie and Chike (jeen-yuhs) for Showtime Sports Documentary Films and directed by Sam Eliad.

The latest E60 special “The Great Imposter and Me” reveals the most unbelievable part of the Barry Bremen story, which came long after he'd hung up his phony uniforms and disguises. Jeremy Schaap brings us this story in two parts, for ESPN Daily. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Episode 221 of the Sports Media Podcast features two guests — ESPN director and producer Russell Dinallo and host and reporter Jeremy Schaap. In this podcast, Dinallo and Schaap discuss the story of Barry Bremen, a Detroit-area novelty goods salesman who in the late 1970's was known as “The Great Imposter.” Bremen pulled off sports pranks that included crashing the 1979 NBA All-Star Game to shoot layups on the court with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Moses Malone, and Dr. J , crashing baseball's 1979 All-Star Game  and shagging flies in the outfield for 30 minutes, and posing as a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader at a Cowboys-Washington game. The stunts landed him on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, the David Letterman Show and the Today Show. Bremen died of cancer in 2011 but that's where the story begins in many ways. More than three dozen people have now learned that Bremen is their biological father, through sperm donation. They found out about each other – and Bremen – through genetic testing and the painstaking efforts of one of the children to track their lineage. “The Great Imposter and Me” debuts on July 12, at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN and will be available for on-demand streaming on ESPN+.
