Chapter 2: An Abattoir

In chapter two, we are introduced to the crime scene through the eyes of Lieutenant Ray Grandisha.  The police were called by Jules and Liz Pranet, Sue's brother and sister-in-law, and the couple the Donases we're supposed to have met for dinner that evening.   As Ray Grandisha takes in the crime scene, he runs into John Lupico, the coroner.  It is clear that Ray Grandisha believes that something very unusual and very sinister took place here .Many Cones is a podcast novel based on true crime. The murders inspiring this crime fiction took place 30 miles from Chicago in Northwest Indiana, and captivated the area from the initial brutal crime scene all the way through and beyond discovery of a shockingly bizarre motive. The apartment resembled an abattoir. Lieutenant Ray Grandisha had to pause as he stood in the midst of the carnage. Twenty-five years of witnessing cruelty never sufficed to prepare him for the bad ones. The Sheriff’s department had received a call at 10:57 P.M. A man by the name of Jules Pranet. He and his wife were supposed to meet their brother and sister-in-law for dinner at a popular restaurant on the outskirts of town. They waited for an hour. Jules and his wife, Liz, didn’t start to worry until that hour had expired. Sixty minutes. A few drinks. Told the waiter to come back three times. The third delay repaid with a bit of rudeness. During the wait, Jules and Liz engaged in personal conversation for the first twenty five minutes. The next half hour devoted to jokes about Sue always being late; Jim always yelling at her. The last five minutes arguing about calling the Police and hospitals. Finally, Jules and Liz left the table. A difficult walk to the foyer. Two forlorn faces in the midst of merriment. Jules concerned that making contact with those who deal in calamity would somehow confirm the worst. Pause by the pay phone. Head pounding. Walk in. Walk in. Please God, walk in. Liz sat next to the phone. “Do you need change?” Jules, still stalling, “No, I’ll put everything on the card. I can get the operator and have her call Jim’s number; if there’s no answer she can contact the police; I’ll ask her to stay on and call the hospital next.”Liz, looking up at him; “Okay. Well?” Jules jumps, “Alright.  Fuck.” No answer at Jim’s. No calls, accident reports, or any other type of bad news according to the police. No emergencies or ambulance runs, according to the hospital. Jules, feeling a touch relieved, sat next to Liz. “What now?” Liz slouched; “Let’s wait.” Jim, with the retort, “For what? They’re not coming. It’s almost an hour and a half...” The discussion was broken up by the rude waiter. He handed Jules a bill for four drinks; an uncivil smirk on his face. As Jules passed cash to him, he made a point of saying he wanted change. The waiter returned in five minutes; silver and green on a tray. Jules took it all. The waiter remained for ten seconds and then huffed off. Jules continued, “We have to go their apartment. We’ll drive the route they would have taken.” Liz said, “Okay.” The trip took thirty minutes. No accidents, no cars on the shoulder or off the road. No couples walking. Nothing out of place.

What a pleasure to have Julia "Jules" Topp on the Podcast. Jules is not just a trail runner, she is also an Adidas TERREX Coach and founder of eatrunhike.de a fantastic blog. Jules has the energy and passion for bringing together a trail running community and fostering a healthy lifestyle both through food and fitness. A great example is last weekend trail run with Jules together with over 80 runners of the Adidas Runners Munich team as well as amazing Adidas TERREX Athletes like Laura Dahlmeier und Janosch Kowalczyk in the Chiemgau alps. In her life book, which she calls "Outdoor innerly" she chooses 4 life chapters. From traveling and living in Australia in her first chapter "Eye Opener" over to chapter 2 "Try & Error" she is always encouraged to try out a few more things to overcome fear. Most recalls in our conversation were her infinite passion for enjoying nature and choosing the quietness over the noise in a work-life balance. Chapter 3 was all about Australia, and it's by far the longest life chapter, which she calls "Finding Love". As Jules said, finding a new place is like finding a second, third or fourth home. The drive to find another second home is something we explored in her 4th life chapter. As we found out during the interview, this episode is truly all about life lessons and how to overcome them through  try & error, but also how to slow down while being connected with nature during trail runs. With all this saying, let's begin episode 28 with Jules . Enjoy! —————————————————- CHAPTERS OF MY LIFE BOOK TITLE: Outdoors innerly CHAPTERS: 1. Eye Opener 2. Try & Error 3. Finding Love 4. Yoga & Beyond | The Yoga and Movement Science Podcast

Are headstands safe? Jules Mitchell and I discuss a study about headstands from 2014. This is the first study of its kind that assessed loads on the neck and head in headstand.  We had different reactions to this study. When I read it, it reinforced my decision to exclude headstands from my practice and group classes. When she read it, it didn’t change her mind about excluding it from group classes, but she went back to headstands in her personal practice. What was it about the study that deterred me from headstands? There is some data in this study that at face value can be alarming about the amount of force on the head and neck, and risks of fracture with compression and extension in the cervical spine. However Jules provides us with context about how those studies were conducted that made the data less alarming. As Jules likes to say, one study does not a conclusion make. This pioneering study opens the door to more questions and does not allow us to make definitive conclusions about the right or wrong ways to do headstand.

A new chapter in the history of the Olympic Games appears to be opening. As one city after another has dropped out of the bidding for the 2022 Winter Games, the International Olympic Committee has been faced with the prospect that no one might be willing to host its wonderful, expensive party. Meanwhile, American cities have been submitting bids to the USOC for the opportunity to be the nation’s one candidate for the 2024 Summer Olympics. In an unusual twist, USOC members received letters from a group called No Boston Olympics that asked the committee to NOT name their city as the candidate for the 2024 Games. The opposition group’s website features counter-evidence to the Boston organizing committee’s claims about the Games’ benefits, including papers by academic economists that show the lack of financial gains in host cities. Anti-Olympic dissent is rising, as ordinary citizens and activist groups have pointed out the misuse of public funds for the Games, the heavy-handed actions of the IOC in host cities, the construction of athletics facilities without long-term viability, and the high costs of hosting an Olympics (costs that are not recouped by promised economic gains). Political scientist Jules Boykoff interviewed activists at the Games in Vancouver in 2010 and London in 2012, and he’s researched the history of activism surrounding the Olympics back to the 1960s.  His book, Activism and the Olympics: Dissent at the Games in Vancouver and London (Rutgers University Press, 2014), looks at the various groups that have protested at recent Olympics, their arguments and strategies, and the attention they’ve received from the press. As Jules acknowledges, there is not a sustained Olympics protest movement. But the work of activists has been successful, as fans and potential organizers are gaining the awareness that the cost of the Games doesn’t outweigh the gains. Learn more about your ad choices.
