Brave New Work
50. The Ways of Working Movement Failed. Now What?

Brave New Work

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 15, 2026 51:01

Fifteen years ago, the future of work seemed inevitable: bureaucracy was crumbling, adaptive organizations were the next default, and a whole movement of practitioners was going to get us there. That future never arrived. Agile transformation offices are being eliminated, the pendulum has swung hard back to command-and-control, and the companies we held up as proof are still the exceptions, not the rule. This week, Rodney and Sam take an honest look at the failure of the ways of working movement, including their own part in it. They dig into the mismatches that doomed so much of this work and get practical about what still works—because while the movement may have stalled, the moves still matter. -------------------------------- Ready to change your organization? Let's talk. Get our newsletter: Sign up here. Follow us: LinkedIn Instagram -------------------------------- Mentioned references: Bradlees Twilight and Sunshine Zone Buurtzorg Morning Star: BNW Ep. 54 with Doug Kirkpatrick Haier "Bayer under Bill": BNW Ep. 68 with Bill Anderson Mary Parker Follett org debt: FOHR Miniseries action meeting: BNW Ep. 80 strategy stack: AWWTR EP. 2 op rhythm: BNW Ep. 118 00:00 Intro + Check-in: Your first music purchase with your own money? 05:18 The failure of the new ways of working movement 07:54 What we mean by "failure" 11:08 ZIRP, COVID, and the swing back to command-and-control 15:27 What people will buy isn't actually what they need 17:30 Selling Sunshine Zone products for Twilight Zone work 20:12 Bottoms-up to a fault 25:01 Nobody has capacity to learn anymore 28:11 Tennis vs. golf: the new consulting posture 35:23 Is local change worth it? 38:42 Failure of the movement, not the moves 40:34 Change #1 - Go deeper 42:49 Change #2 - Orient to the outcome 44:47 Change #3 - Branching roadmaps and scenario planning 46:15 Change #4 - Build organizations that benefit from change 49:15 The End Sound engineering and design by Taylor Marvin of Coupe Studios.

This week on Political Breakfast, we're talking about party unity, and endorsements pouring-in as the dust settles from Georgia's May primary elections. U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff and Georgia's Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Keisha Lance Bottoms, are joining forces ahead of the general election in November. Is the entire Democratic base united to support the former Atlanta Mayor? If elected, Bottoms would become the first Black woman to take the state's highest office. On the Republican side, unity is dicey. That's as political outsider and billionaire healthcare CEO Rick Jackson and current Lt. Gov. Burt Jones prepare for a June 16th runoff. The winner with face Bottoms in November. Democratic strategist Tharon Johnson, Republican strategist Brian Robinson and host Lisa Rayam break all this down. Plus, Republicans are now having mixed feelings about redrawing Georgia's district lines. And Georgia's gas tax suspension has ended. Now Georgians are rushing to fill up their tanks, before those prices at the pumps creep-up. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hi Keisha, it's me. You should call for a state takeover of MARTA & champion rail for GA

My conversation today was heard by hundreds or thousands on Georgia NOW & Progressive Voices, but truly, it was meant for an audience of one - former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, who's now the Democratic Party nominee for Governor of Georgia.MARTA's a PR disaster. A ghoulish, murderous stabbing of a grandmother. New trains (again) delayed prior to the FIFA World Cup. "More MARTA" underwhelming the voters that supported it.The Atlanta Beltline is falling further and further from its intention to alleviate in-city gridlock and offer easier mobility from Atlanta's historic neighborhoods as resistance to the rail element continues to build clout. Why not take a page from the Georgia GOP, circa 2020-21, and call for a state takeover of MARTA the way they salivated over wresting the airport from the city? As Atlanta's former mayor, you have your fingerprints on the Beltline project and can't possibly agree with Cox Enterprises CEO Alex Taylor who's joined the NIMBYs and Eastside trail business folks who now don't want the crucial rail element at all anymore, now, can you? Transit ... mobility ... not just for Atlanta in-city, but the metropolitan area and - dare I say - the state (that's home to the world's busiest airport and has feeder airports inexplicably flying people in small numbers at exorbitant fares) should be a top-of-mind conversation for an aspirational gubernatorial candidate. Heck, talk Delta into a public-private partnership. There's precedence for this in Canada. It makes good business sense for Delta, because it clearly did so for Air Canada, too. While the two GOP candidates try to out "tax cut" one another while also slinging mud to and fro, wouldn't be refreshing for the Democratic gubernatorial candidate to counter with something vastly more impactful?I mean a $1000 break here or there is fine, I guess. Not life changing. Reducing commute times, an affordable, swift means to connect to the world's busiest airport from Athens, Augusta, Columbus, Macon & Savannah - all of which makes it viable for people to live just about wherever they want in the state where they can find more affordable housing; that's what would positively impact the lives of so many Georgians.Mrs. Bottoms, you should pronounce to voters that you'll be governor who connects the state. Be the "mobility governor."It's there waiting for someone to grasp. Grasp it.

In this explosive episode of Joe is joined by Colorado gubernatorial candidate and current State Representative Scott Bottoms to dissect the raw, unfiltered truth behind last night's GOP debate. The gloves are completely off as Joe and Scott dive straight into the stunning moments that defined the night—starting with the candidates who still refuse to admit that Colorado's voting systems have been hijacked, even after Tina Peters faced a ruthless 9.5-year sentence for exposing the truth. From jaw-dropping admissions to candidates completely failing to grasp the depth of the corruption running rampant in our state, this is the debate breakdown the mainstream media refuses to air.The conversation heats up as Joe and Scott take a hammer to the radical overreach of Colorado Democrats, who continue to abuse their power by subverting Supreme Court rulings on mandatory gender-affirming care through cheap legislative word-play. Scott breaks down how the Left has completely overplayed its hand and destroyed the fabric of Colorado, while the duo dissects the lackluster and controversial performances of the other GOP contenders. No one is safe from scrutiny as they roll the tapes on Barb Kirkmeyer defending her failed Northern Colorado secession movement, and frontrunner Victor Marx attempting to qualify his leadership credentials—only to be blasted by his peers as a fraud and a con man in the night's most polarizing moment. But this episode isn't just about exposing the fractures and failures of the current political landscape; it's about the path forward. Watch as Scott Bottoms responds to the viral moment where he told moderator Kyle Clark that he would offer Joe Oltmann a vital role in his administration. Scott lays out his definitive vision for Colorado, clarifying his fierce stance against systemic corruption, explaining his proven legislative voting record, and revealing what he will actually do to take the state back when he steps into the governor's office. Strap in, share this broadcast, and get ready for an unapologetic, deep-dive discussion into the battle for the soul of Colorado.

With a keen eye for detail, he identifies the strengths and weaknesses of each candidate, providing a clear and unbiased assessment of their performance. One of the key takeaways from this episode is the importance of specificity in policy-making. Michael highlights how Marx's lack of concrete answers to questions about affordability and immigration enforcement makes him seem more like a politician than a leader. In contrast, Kirkmeyer's ability to provide specific solutions and her experience as a county commissioner make her a strong contender. Spider-Noir Editors – Jennifer Barbot, ACE; Tirsa Hackshaw, ACE; Eric Kissack, ACE and Geraud Brisson, ACE Although the editors of Spider-Noir may have all arrived at the series through different paths, they quickly found themselves working toward the same goal: shaping a superhero story that functions first and foremost as a noir detective tale. For Jennifer Barbot, Tirsa Hackshaw, Eric Kissack, and Geraud Brisson, that meant balancing 1930s atmosphere, modern pacing, dry comedy, stylized action, and the very particular energy of a Nicolas Cage performance. Created by Oren Uziel for MGM+ and Prime Video, Spider-Noir stars Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly, a down-on-his-luck private investigator in 1930s New York who is pulled back into his former life as the city's only superhero, The Spider. The series also stars Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Jack Huston and Brendan Gleeson, and is presented in both "Authentic Black and White" and "True-Hue Full Color" versions. For the editors, that dual-format release created one of the show's most interesting creative and technical challenges. The editors primarily cut in black and white, leaning into the shadows, contrast and classic noir language of the series, while visual effects reviews often revealed the same scenes in color. The result was a show that could feel emotionally different depending on which version was being watched, even when the underlying performance, rhythm and story remained the same. JENNIFER BARBOT, ACE Jennifer Barbot is an editor whose credits include Your Honor, Raised by Wolves, The Man in the High Castle, Jessica Jones and Dope Thief. On Spider-Noir, Jennifer was drawn to the show's mix of noir style, superhero mythology and emotional character work, as well as the opportunity to help establish the tone of a world that had to feel both period-inspired and contemporary. TIRSA HACKSHAW, ACE Tirsa Hackshaw, ACE has worked across a wide range of television and film projects, including One Piece, Kung Fu, Jupiter's Legacy, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and The Punisher. Having previously worked with Steve Lightfoot on Marvel's The Punisher, Tirsa came to Spider-Noir with both a love of the noir genre and a deep appreciation for the Spider-Verse, making the show a natural fit for her interests as an editor. ERIC KISSACK, ACE Eric Kissack, ACE is an editor and director whose work includes The Good Place, Veep, Black Monday, Rutherford Falls, Pam & Tommy and The Studio. He has also edited feature comedies such as Role Models, Brüno, Cedar Rapids, The Dictator, Horrible Bosses 2, Daddy's Home, Instant Family, Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar and Bottoms. On Spider-Noir, Eric was especially interested in the show's dry, organic comedy and in finding a rhythm that allowed the humor to breathe without undercutting the detective story. GERAUD BRISSON, ACE Geraud Brisson, ACE is a French-American film and television editor whose credits include CODA, The OA, Counterpart, This Close, Shantaram and Lessons in Chemistry. Having previously worked with Steve Lightfoot on Shantaram, Geraud was excited by the chance to explore a superhero-oriented story through the lens of noir. His work on Spider-Noir included sequences that blended action, subjective sound, visual effects and classic film references into the show's distinctive style.   Visit ExtremeMusic for all your production audio needs Hear Eric discuss his work on THE STUDIO Listen to Geraud discuss cutting Best Picture Oscar-winner CODA Subscribe to The Rough Cut podcast and never miss an episode Visit The Rough Cut on YouTube

In a recent debate, a question about corruption and pedophilia in the Colorado government sparked a heated discussion, leaving many wondering what's behind the allegations. This episode delves into the controversy surrounding a whistleblower's claims of a 25-year cover-up involving the governor, attorney general, and the entire Colorado Supreme Court. Michael discusses the allegations made by a fired government official, Christopher Gregory, who claims to have evidence of a massive corruption scheme. Gregory's claims are based on a real court case, a real disciplinary opinion, and a state auditor's investigation, but the speaker emphasizes that these are just allegations and not yet proven. The discussion touches on the importance of an independent investigation to uncover the truth and clear the names of those accused. Michael also addresses the conflation of pedophilia and corruption, pointing out that while pedophilia is a serious crime, it's not the same as corruption. Michael highlights the need for a clear distinction between allegations and proof, and how the latter is often missing in this case. The discussion also covers the topic of predictive markets and how they can be manipulated, using the example of a Colorado gubernatorial race. To get the full story and understand the complexities of this controversy, tune in to this episode to hear Michael's in-depth analysis and discussion of the allegations and the need for transparency in government.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this bonus episode, you'll hear more from Sofia Cababa Wood who discusses Marie Antoinette, its themes, and movies that would pair well with it. Antoinette was ruled by her circumstances, but the 2006 movie shows us a more personal side, all while avoiding graphic imagery of her ultimate demise. We also talk about the funny, entertaining MTV Cribs parody that Jason Schwartzman did which appears on the DVD's special features.-Sofia Cababa Wood is a Seattle-based product designer at eBay. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Visual Communication Design from the University of Washington in 2020. She cut her teeth at various design studios, with a specialty in data visualization. Her experiences living in the Netherlands, Japan, and South Korea have shaped her as a designer and helped her view her work through a systems-centered lens. In May of 1971, a young couple named Bobby and Elizabeth Ford rented a small frame house outside the tiny town of Fouke, Arkansas. They'd been there less than a week when something reached through their front window in the middle of the night and changed their lives forever. By morning, Bobby Ford was in a Texarkana hospital being treated for shock and abrasions, the local constable and county sheriff were photographing three-toed tracks in the yard, and a story that had been quietly told around kitchen tables in Miller County for nearly a hundred years was about to spill out into the national press. This episode walks through the full history of the Fouke Monster, from the 1908 Jonesville reports and the decades of quiet family stories that came before, through the Ford family attack on the night of 5/1/1971, and into the media wave that brought hunters, reporters, and a thousand and ninety dollar bounty to a town of a few hundred people. We dig into the work of Smokey Crabtree, the lifelong Fouke resident who became the unofficial chronicler of the case and wrote some of the most important primary-source books on the subject. We cover the production and release of Charles B. Pierce's 1972 docudrama The Legend of Boggy Creek, a film made on a hundred thousand dollar loan from a Texarkana trucking company owner that went on to gross over twenty million dollars and quietly invent the modern American Bigfoot mythos. And we trace the encounter reports that kept rolling in long after the cameras packed up, from highway sightings in the late 1970s, to coon hunters in the bottoms in 1997, to trail camera images in 2008, all the way into recent reports along the Sulphur River and Mercer Bayou.Drawing on nearly four decades of personal Sasquatch research and sixteen years in law enforcement, Brian unpacks the evidence with a careful eye on what the witnesses actually said, how investigators actually responded, and what holds up when you set the famous movie to one side and look at the record on its own terms. The episode closes with an honest weighing of the major theories, black bear misidentification, hoaxing, regional folklore, and the case for a possible undocumented hominid population in the connected swamps that run from southwest Arkansas down into Louisiana and east Texas. The witnesses in Fouke didn't ask for any of this. They saw what they saw. And the bottoms keep their secrets the way they always have.Have you experienced a Bigfoot sighting, Sasquatch encounter, Dogman experience, UFO sighting, or any unexplained cryptid or paranormal event deep in the woods? Kemp calls to redraw a Georgia already gerrymandered

The Ron Show

Also, Democrats need to present an alternative to GOP and their own 'status quo' & is there a pattern of campaign finance ethics issues with Bottoms' campaigns? Not only did Brian Kemp call a special session of the General Assembly back to the Gold Dome to address a mess of its own making (mandating the elimination of QR codes from voter ballots), but the already-and-disproportionately gerrymandered state - in his mind - needs another redraw. So what are Democrats to do?Well, for starters, they need to understand that they, as a party, aren't much more popular than the historically unpopular President they're trying to mitigate by retaking the House the November. My goodness, if they could provide clarity by way of a slate of candidates backing a populist message that's centered on the working class, eschewing 'Third Way' "baby steps pragmatism" for a bold visionary agenda, the places they could ascend to!That agenda starts with fixing the way we govern and elect leaders. They include:Uncapping the House. New England California Republicans would love this because they'd finally have representation, and a nation whose voice in the House has been diluted by 1/3 since the 1930s gets its clout back.Eliminate partisan gerrymandering. Racial gerrymandering's supposedly gone, so get rid of partisan gerrymandering to ensure that, and do it before we've drawn ourselves into a civil war. By doing those two things you've already fixed the electoral college, but because it's broken, you have to also uncap the Supreme Court. Grow it to 13 to match the number of US court circuits. Oh, and Set term limits on that court. You can't tell me the American people wouldn't be solidly behind that. Call it "Project 2032" if you need to - so they know it can't be done overnight and that they (we) the voter have to stay on task to ensure we do our part to meet that date to see those accomplishments come to fruition. As Democrats, there'll be some self-inflicted pains in some "blue states," but gains to be made in others. So be it. This is how you grow your brand in places you aren't winning in. - - - I spent most of my show going off on that tangent, but closer to home, there are concerns - and now a filed campaign finance ethics complaint - shedding light on the Keisha Lance Bottoms' gubernatorial campaign. I highlighted a lot of those concerns before the complaint was filed, but this information's readily available for anyone to gather and use against her - including Burt Jones and Rick Jackson. Heck, I got it from a Republican campaign finance wonk. Is this "more baggage" to consider when deciding who Democrats in Georgia should back to be their gubernaotiral nominee? It bears mentioning this isn't the first time such allegations have come up. Then councilwoman Bottoms, when pivoting to a mayoral run, was hit with a $37,000 fine for campaign ethics violations.
