What do we truly understand (rather than just regurgitating) and how do we communicate that? How can we clearly express what something as simple— yet as complex—as “stretching”? How can we facilitate those conversations? How can we celebrate the feedback we receive from our students, rather than feel discouraged by it so we can better serve them, and the practice of yoga itself? Episode 30 is a super special one because I'm talking with someone who really shaped the course of my career in movement.Jules Mitchell is a yoga educator focusing on biomechanics within the practice of yoga. She is a teacher's teacher and her approach to movement is grounded in science but with space and permission to explore and get curious about what works for your own body. Jules shares the evolution of her connection with yoga, beginning as a way to deal with the grief of her parents' passing to teaching teachers all over the world and truly revolutionizing the way yoga is taught and practiced. We take a lot for granted in the way yoga (and all movement) is taught and Jules' work is centered around helping teachers to stop and ask why. Because when you ask why and begin paying attention to what feels right for you, the practice can shift away from doing the pose “right” and trying to achieve a certain look to discovering what works for your body and meeting you where you are at. Do you think yoga is a complete practice that gives your body everything it needs? More and more, it seems that science movement experts suggest differently…For today’s episode I sat down with Jenni Rawlings and Travis Pollen to talk about the place of strength training for yogis.Jenni has completed a wealth of training and learning in the fields of yoga, anatomy, and movement science. She writes regularly for Yoga International and for her own body geek-focused yoga website, where she also offers science-based yoga classes and continuing education courses for yogis. Travis is an author, personal trainer, and PhD in Health & Rehabilitation Sciences. His research focuses on core stability, movement screening, training load, and injury risk appraisal. He also holds a master’s degree in Biomechanics and Movement Science along with an American record in Paralympic swimming. Together, they joined forces to write the book Strenght Training for Yoga, so today we got together to talk about that.MY 5 BIGGEST TAKEAWAY FROM THIS EPISODEWe can repeat the same movement again and again and hope we'll get stronger at it or we can learn about anatomy and biomechanics to then take educated decision around changing load, orientation to gravity, use props, changing leverage, progressing movement in a way to build strength systematically.Load is a force applied to the body in order to stimulate it to respond and adapt to grow stronger. By applying force or creating resistance, and repeating with enough frequency, over time we can improve and increase strength. In yoga, the only load is our body weight. The issue with strength training in yoga is that we only have our body weight for the load, so it's impossible to progress it. There can also be a lack of variability and inputs to the body (ex. shoulder pulling) and a lack of opportunity to meet failure. To improve your strength for a particular pose, look at what the joints are doing, what muscles are participating, what actions are you trying to do, and then look at strength training exercises that replicate the same type of actions with the same muscles, in a similar range of motion. Use different planes of motions to translate back to the asanas. No movement is inherently right or wrong. There are no universal ways to teach all bodies to do one pose.QUESTIONS THEY ANSWERED DURING THIS EPISODEWhy did you guys decide to join forces to write this book? On this particular subject? What is movement science and why should students, if not at least teachers, learn more about it?What is load? What’s the issue with load in yoga? Can you give an example of movement patterns that are not represented enough in yoga and how we could introduce them in our strength training? What would be some advantages/benefits of improving our strength when it comes to our yoga practice? How do we align the right strength training exercise with a particular yoga pose? What are the basic tools people can invest in to work out at home?Jenni, one of the concepts you center your teachings around is the idea that no movement is inherently right or wrong. Can you tell us a little bit more about that?Travis, on your side, one of the missions you have in your work is to close the gap between rehabilitation and performance. Jules Mitchell MS, CMT, RYT (@julesyoga) is a Las Vegas-based yoga teacher, educator, and massage therapist. She blends the tradition of yoga with her extensive study in biomechanics to help teachers develop their craft and empower them with education. She regularly contributes to yoga teacher training programs and leads workshops worldwide, balancing the somatic aspects of yoga with the most current exercise science. Bringing the most useful and applicable pieces of that science into the yoga community is her passion, even when it invokes a discerning analysis of tradition. Her book, Yoga Biomechanics: Stretching Redefined, is now available through Handspring Publishing.   In this episode, you’ll hear from Jules Mitchell on:  [14.50] Her introduction to biomechanics. Jules began studying biomechanics, the principle of applying physics to the human body, in her thirties when she was already working as a yoga teacher. She describes how her studies had an immediate professional impact when she was able to apply her scientific knowledge in her yoga classes.     [20.57] Tissue mechanics. She explains how tissue behaves and adapts when force is applied. Teaching the fundamentals of tissue mechanics forms an important part of her yoga teacher training because it makes it easier to navigate conversations about injury.    [22.53] The resilience and capability of the human body. Jules expresses her amazement at the ability of the human body to withstand stress and cautions against the assumption of fragility and the practice of excessive protective guarding.          [42.52] Her personal practice. For Jules, the study of anatomy is a spiritual practice, a celebration of the intricacies of the human body, which allows her to understand herself and others better.    [50.20] Stretching redefined. Henry and Jules discuss her book which encourages yoga instructors to apply the principles of biomechanics and refine the language and attitudes they adopt in their teaching.   Announcements:  Visit henryyoga.com to learn how to level up your yoga practice in just 40 days. You may have noticed a pendulum swing when it comes to yoga poses that require extreme amounts of flexiblity. Just as we glorified the idea of throwing both legs behind our head in Yoganidrasana, many of us are now worried that we've been doing too far, exploiting our "hypermobility" and potentially causing soft tissue injuries or arthritis down the line. But what exactly is hypermobility? Is it the same thing as being flexible? Can we tell if we or our students have it? Most importantly, what do we do about it?For this important episode, I've invited biomechanics researcher Jules Mitchell back to help clarify. In the conversations I have with colleagues about yoga teacher trainings the focus is almost always centered on the idea that 200 hours is not enough time to produce high quality baseline yoga teachers. I brought this question to my friend and teacher Jules Mitchell to get her opinion and very quickly our conversation veered from the serious but simple question, “How many hours of training should foundational YTTs have?” to the much more complex questions of, “Who gets to have the power to decide what makes a good yoga teacher?” and “If we raise the standards to make ‘better' yoga teachers what communities get left further behind with less access to yoga than they already have?” Spoiler alert: We came up with almost no clear answers to these questions, but I think it is important for us to have these conversations publicly and often. Charlie has a particular interest in examining and interpreting the scientific literature on--but certainly not limited to-- stretch physiology, strength & conditioning, and neuroscience research. Kathryn was introduced to Charlie's work by friend and two-time podcast guest Jules Mitchell, and we knew we needed to have him on as well. Charlie's is pragmatic, well rounded and subjective in  his work and he shares with us many nuggets of wisdom in this interview. We learn about Charlie's journey through movement, his transformative experience with strength and conditioning as a young person that lead to his keen interest in body science and fitness, his interest in music and the shared qualities found in these pursuits, and what his own personal practice looks like today. Charlie's foundation of both personal practice and coaching centers around curiosity, exploration and supporting people in expanding their own physical literacy, as well as performance goals. Charlie, like us here at Mindful Strength, believes that our bodies require a rich movement diet and that strength is "like a swiss army knife" in the tool kit of coaching. In the latest episode in the Yoga Renaissance, I checked in with Jules Mitchell in the midst of a demanding teaching tour. She had just submitted the manuscript for her book (out in October) Yoga Biomechanics: Stretching Redefined, and was putting the finishing touches to a long form article due later that day.  As she reflected on her current experience in teacher training workshops, Jules emphasized the value of embracing uncertainty as part of being really open to a scientific approach to how we practice and teach yoga. I asked her about how she frames this uncertainty for teachers who find it really disorienting, and even threatening in terms of what they have learned in the past from authority figures. We talk about evolving model of how we think about yoga postures, movement, injury,  through the lens of biomechanics and anatomy —but also how this is influenced by genetics, environment, psychology; the biopsychosocial context, and the truly puzzling questions in pain science. I also asked Jules to weigh in on the topic I have been everyone about —the concept of "alignment" in yoga... is it a complete fabrication, or is it based on something substantial?! This led to discussion of Serena Williams, Olympic power lifters, Iyengar, Krishnamacharya, and whether or not our bodies know Euclidian geometry... In a surprising twist, she calls into question the catchphrase that "all movement is good," and also offers an illuminating critique on the current available research data about specific yoga postures, and the underlying (and unproven) assumptions still based in an outdated model that are often evident on closer inspection. Great to get some thought-provoking notes from the field!

Redefining Stretching with Jules Mitchell   Jules Mitchell is “a student for life”. She is a massage therapist, yoga teacher and educator. She holds a Master of Science in Exercise Science and Biomechanics from CSU Long Beach and teaches numerous workshops that combine the tradition of yoga (asana and pranayama) with her knowledge of biomechanics to educate teachers in a fun digestible way.   Jules practiced yoga for many years and at a certain point in her life felt the need to teach. The teacher training brought up so many questions for Jules that she says weren't satisfactorily answered and realized she would have to turn to academics to answer them.   Jules came to realize and accept that there will always be a lot of questions that are unknown and one will always be learning. She tells her students at the beginning of her workshops that if they don't leave there with more questions then she hasn't done her job. Jules wants to impress upon yoga teachers the need to question more, the importance of scientific literacy, critical thinking and curiosity.   Shannon and Jules talk about how there are no bad poses, the importance of cueing (talking less and listening more), and questioning how poses are taught. Jules gives us an excellent example by discussing whether you keep your legs straight or bend them when performing a forward fold. Her explanation using scientific research illustrates the importance of science-informed teaching and the benefit of reading studies in a field that is ever-evolving.   Jules wants to help inform you to make your own choices as a yoga teacher, not to overwhelm you. The practice and study of yoga is so vast that the more we all continue to study and teach, the more this question seems to loom taller and taller: what exactly is the job of a yoga instructor? To process this out loud with me, I invited my friend Jules Mitchell for a chat. Jules has been teaching yoga for a decade, but her knowledge base doesn't end there. Jules holds a Masters in Biomechanics, is a certified massage therapist, and is currently writing a book about it all. Through carefully chosen language, a deep understand of body mechanics, and a patience and wisdom that only comes from experience, Jules shows us how a roadmap for how we might continue to evolve as teachers.   Today, Jules and I will tackle the tough questions, ask plenty of our own, and talk a little shop. If you are feeling stuck in your teaching, or ready for some fresh inspiration, this episode is for you. More in this episode:   Jules talks about her initial training, and what brought her to study biomechanics and other disciplines.   What her movement practice looks like when she's on the road.   We talk all about Jules' book, Yoga Biomechanics: Redefining Stretching.   Jules gives us a definition of biomechanics and we talk about how it should impact our yoga teaching. Jules and I dig into the importance of the specificity of language and offering open-ended questions.   We breakdown the distinctions between yoga therapists and yoga teachers.   Connect with Jules online here.

In this episode, Janet and Nikki talk with Jules Mitchell, yoga teacher, manual therapist and educator, about how to apply biomechanics to yoga and movement. They cover: How to define biomechanics The benefits of cuing less and exploring more in your yoga and movement practice Why it's not always bad to break alignment "rules" The role of load in yoga and movement A brief synopsis on the science of stretching and how it relates to yoga and flexibility   Jules Mitchell MS, CMT, RYT Jules is a Los Angeles based yoga educator. She combines the tradition of yoga with her background in biomechanics to help people move better and achieve individually defined physical success. Her approach to asana is multi-modal and skill based, balancing the somatic (moving from within) aspects of yoga with exercise science. Jules writes on yoga biomechanics and references the exercise science literature on topics (such as stretching) where the yoga research is lacking. She is a regular contributor to yoga teacher training programs worldwide, providing yoga schools with the most current research in biomechanics, even when it invokes a discerning analysis of tradition. Her most influential teachers include Leeann Carey (Yapana Yoga), Gil Hedley (Integral Anatomy), John Casey (yoga philosophy and Sanskrit), and the many dedicated scientists who collect, analyze, and publish data so we may continue to ask more questions. As adjunct faculty at Arizona State University, she serves as the yoga consultant on research studies to quantify the effects of yoga therapy on special populations. Jules is currently writing her book, Yoga Biomechanics: Redefining Stretching, which is expected to become available in 2017 through Handspring Publishing. Delighted to share this great conversation with Jules Mitchell, who brings her fascination with exercise science and biomechanics to the evolving field of modern yoga practice. We discuss the tension between a beginning student (or new teacher) mindset around differing “correct” models of alignment and technique, and the less clearly defined process of exploring the underlying realities of the body. Jules talks about how the work she shares with people has evolved to include free movement, loading, and encouraging what she calls “reversibility.” We touch on neuroplasticity, self-loving embodiment, and the inseparable nature of body and mind. As nerdy and technical as these topics sound, Jules is a warm, pragmatic and unpretentious conversationalist —I think you’ll find this a very engaging and illuminating interview! Yoga & Beyond | The Yoga and Movement Science Podcast

Are headstands safe? Jules Mitchell and I discuss a study about headstands from 2014. This is the first study of its kind that assessed loads on the neck and head in headstand.  We had different reactions to this study. When I read it, it reinforced my decision to exclude headstands from my practice and group classes. When she read it, it didn’t change her mind about excluding it from group classes, but she went back to headstands in her personal practice. What was it about the study that deterred me from headstands? There is some data in this study that at face value can be alarming about the amount of force on the head and neck, and risks of fracture with compression and extension in the cervical spine. However Jules provides us with context about how those studies were conducted that made the data less alarming. As Jules likes to say, one study does not a conclusion make. This pioneering study opens the door to more questions and does not allow us to make definitive conclusions about the right or wrong ways to do headstand.

Does Yoga improve athletic performance? It might, but we don't know exactly how. Jules Mitchell was researching how yoga affects athletics performance for her upcoming book and discovered a gap in the literature. There's plenty of research about the SAID principle and adaptation, but not enough about yoga's impact on sports performance. In this episode we talk about the only two studies that cover this topic as well as their many limitations. Hopefully there will be more studies about this in the future so we can have more clarity.

While we can agree that yoga is about a lot more than stretching, that doesn't change the fact that the majority of people coming to yoga in the west, come because of a perceived benefit of stretching. So what is actually happening to the body when we stretch and move in a postural yoga practice? Has what we know about the body changed in recent years because of developments in western medical science?  Join us as we chat with Jules Mitchell MS, CMT, RYT, a Los Angeles based yoga teacher, manual therapist and educator. Whether or not to use mirrors in yoga classes is a popular topic of discussion among teachers. This is the first episode in my new yoga and movement research series. I talk to Jules Mitchell about the efficacy of using mirrors when learning yoga asana. We discuss a study entitled, "Effect on performance of learning a pilates skill with or without a mirror."  The study examines a pilates move called the STAR movement,  but what we learn from it can also be applied to yoga. The STAR move is similar to Vasistasana (side plank) while raising and lowering the top leg. The stated goal of this study was to "use an objective measure of performance to look at the effect of mirrors when learning Pilates star movement that must then be done without the mirrors." What do you think? Is it best to learn a motor skill with or without mirrors?

http://www.liberatedbody.com/jules-mitchell-lbp-009  I get a chance to talk with Jules Mitchell right after she turned in her Master’s thesis in the science of stretching. Jules’ work blends biomechanics with the tradition of yoga to help people move better, and while looking into the research on stretching she discovered some pretty eye-opening things! For example, the idea that we can persistently stretch a muscle and have it grow longer, it turns out, is not exactly true. We get into many other myths of stretching- and it seems there are plenty- what really works, what’s really risky, and what a better model of viewing the body might be when we put aside the “stretch tight bits to make them looser” paradigm.
