Head brewer at Rock Bottom Brewery, Meg Evans is also one of the coordinators of Brewtal Beer Fest, a metal music and beer festival in Pittsburgh. This year it took place at Mr. Smalls and it was one of the most well-oiled festivals I've been to in this town in quite some time. We talked about the festival AT the festival, and what's in store for next year.
Meg and James Evans, founders of Pittsburgh’s Brewtal Beer Fest, rejoin the Drinking Partners for a special release episode to celebrate their October 20 music and beer festival. What makes the festival unique are the collaboration beers that all eleven bands have created – which results in fans experiencing a, “Once in a lifetime beer associated with a band they might love.” Heavy music and exclusive brews make Brewtal a must attend event at Mr. Smalls Theater and Funhouse. With two brewers on the episode, the conversation is both informative and rowdy as the group discusses Meg’s award-winning Honey Comb cream ale, and Day deliberates how he will get his face painted for the festival. Marriage, wrestling, and shoes also find their way into the conversation with hilarious results. To purchase tickets for Brewtal Beer Fest, visit https://www.pghbrewtalfest.com.
Podcast 24: 6 MONTHS! Welcome to our six months anniversary! Longer than the average millennial relationship. Beer #1 (Studio) : Action Bronson's 7000 - Stillwater Artisanal Ales (Action Bronson X Stillwater Collab - 4.5% Sour Ale) Lot's of lemon taste, sour enough to make you pucker. Jake went to Backlash's soft open! Congrats to them for opening their taproom. Someone in Boston recognized the Dancing Gnome logo on Jake's hat! He was hopeful for the place, but overall not a very outstanding experience out of the gate. We got into pricing and pour sizes throughout breweries and bars. Jake educated us on what a “Masshole” is… (A Massachusetts Asshole) Beer #2 (Studio) : Johann and the Giant Peach - Aslin Beer Company (9.4% Double IPA) This beer was super chunky. The name makes you think this will be a milkshake style IPA but it definitely doesn't drink like one. Its got a hint of peach flavor but the vanilla was lost and this beer might've sat for too long. Overall it wasn't a great experience but we powered through. Nick and Alex went to Drag Bingo at Couch Brewery! We had an absolute blast of a time even though we didn't win anything. We tried D's Road Dogs for the first time! Great hot dogs loaded with toppings and the fries were delicious. Couch had Atomic Meltdown back on draft and it was SUPER spicy this time around. Beer #1 (Boston) : Permutation #55 - Trillium Brewing (5.7% Gose) Guava and lime shine through with hints of pineapple, pomegranate and orange making it a super citrusy ride. Jake really liked this beer. Alex was ALL over the place on Saturday! Dancing Gnome, Stick City, Strange Roots and Leaning Cask were all on the list. Alex gave his review of Stick City and his distain for gourmet pizza. Then he was exposed to cask beers at Leaning Cask. Beer #3 (Studio) : Extra Dry - Stillwater (4.2% Dry Sake Saison style Ale) Crisp drinking and very refreshing. It's really dry on the finish and not a lot of nose. We really enjoyed the can design on this one. Upcoming Events: 9/29 - Dancing Gnome X Hop Culture Birthday Bash 9/30 - The Weekly ReCap at Couch Brewery! 10/12-10/20 - Pittsburgh Libations Week!
