This week, I sit down with the spookiest sippin' spot around tahn, Necromancer Brewing. Ben Butler and Lauren Hughes are the brains behind this operation, along with their team full of ghouls. Ben, the owner, had a dream to open a brewery in the North Hills. After gaining a love for craft beer early on, he knew he wanted to build something great of his own. All he needed was the right person to brew the goods! That is where we meet Head Brewer, Lauren Hughes. After some friends at Dancing Gnome connected Ben with Lauren, they started to get to work manifesting exactly what Necromancer Brewing would become. This week, we talk about their initiations into the craft beer scene, building out the brewery, the logistics behind their operation, resurrecting forgotten beers from the past, and most importantly - what they stand for as a business. Necromancer prides themselves on being a safe space that welcomes every type of person out there. They wanted to build something where everyone could come and enjoy great beers, regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation. If you like great beers, check them out! We're back in your ear with a new episode of Good, but not the best... a Dancing Gnome Podcast! Andrew and I kick off this episode by forgetting to check on new reviews (we do it later) but we do discuss the news of Platform Beer Co. closing and how the future of "big beer" buyouts could be changing. We also discuss how/if to have a conversation with a fellow brewer when their beer(s) are off/subpar. Then we jump into Look Back/Look Ahead to talk about Dancing Gnome hitting 2 million cans on their canning line, Andrew taking the baton from Piper's Pub and putting on an Imperial Breakfast event, and the upcoming Czech Beer Dinner with Golden Age Brewing. Next, we are joined by our guest Steve Hartman of Hazel Grove Brewing! Hazel Grove is a new brewery in Hazelwood that hopes to be open later in 2023. Steve tells us about how he became interested in beer/brewing, how they landed on Hazelwood for their location, where you can find some of their beers on tap currenty, and much more! Steve sticks around as we close out the show with another round of Watch, Listen, Learn. Intro & Outro music by: Kabbalistic Village Break music by: Kevin MacLeod
Episode 179 : We're Back! Nick and Sara are back in the basement ramping up for another year of the Weekly Re-Cap. We started by covering our most recent excursion to Liberty Pole Whiskey. Sara explains her need to stay away from hazy/hoppy beers recently and we rage about Personal Day Seltzer. This leads us to our experiences with food and we talk about Fat Butcher in Lawrenceville and Bridge City Brinery's Takeoutery in Etna, which of course led us to talk about Blue Sparrow's bus at Dancing Gnome. We obviously had to talk about Dancing Gnome bottling beer. After we cover the new breweries of the last 2 months (Bonafide, Lolev and Aslin) we gush about the great emo resurgence of 2023. Then we get into beerfest season with Drink The Cookie Table 2 (Listen for the giveaway instructions) first and we hype Barrel and Flow. That's it this week. Thanks for listening! Andrew Witchey is the founder and brewer of Dancing Gnome in Pittsburgh and opened up his new taproom early for a conversation over Kölsch about how the city has evolved beer-wise and where it's heading. Then he talks about his appreciation of lagers, his dislike of sours, and how he created a new space that reflects the beers and the brewery's personality. This Episode is sponsored by:Cigar City Brewing Co.Cigar City Brewing has taken inspiration from beyond the cosmos for Cosmic Crown, a golden-hued Strong Golden Ale, and added Galaxy hops to impart passionfruit and peach qualities to its profile of ripe fruit and light peppery spice. Assertive aromas of pineapple, bubblegum, dried flowers, and a hint of black pepper greet the nose. Overripe banana, red apple, and lime leaf esters play on the palate, while poundcake-like malt, pepper-like spiciness, and herbaceous bitterness play supporting roles.
