(00:55) Rick Sebak occupies a special place in Pittsburgh's cultural landscape. For nearly four decades, he's crafted documentaries that capture the essence of our region, always with a keen eye for how food connects us to place and memory. "I celebrate Pittsburgh," he says simply, though his work does anything but take a simple approach to storytelling. What makes Rick's style so compelling is his deliberate choice to step away from the spotlight. "I never think I'm the story," he explains, preferring what a colleague once called "an explosion of voices" – letting the people he meets tell their own tales. This approach has carried him from showcasing local institutions like Kennywood and the bygone Original Hotdog Shop of Oakland, to traveling cross-country capturing America's diners, bakeries, and shoreline foods for national PBS audiences.(26:10) Our conversation weaves through Rick's formative upbringing with food – from his mother's home-cooked meals in Bethel Park to his transformative years abroad in France and Brazil. These experiences shaped not just his palate but his understanding that food tells our cultural story in ways politics and formal history often miss.(35:35) We explore his current projects, including the upcoming "Lucky to Live in Pittsburgh" premiering April 10th on WQED, featuring stories about Weatherbury Farm's ancient grains and other regional treasures. Rick also shares his latest Pittsburgh food experiences – from the Grant Bar's dual-style pork chops to Chaykhana's Uzbek cuisine in the West End. We end with a wine pick from Catherine Montest to pair with Rick's beloved 'cowboy' cookies. This episode offers a glimpse in cultural storytelling through the lens of what we eat, who prepares it, and how these experiences shape our memories and communities. As Rick puts it, quoting a saying he's adopted: "All food history is written on jello" – acknowledging both the fluidity and the fundamental importance of our culinary traditions.Support the showLiked the episode? From the………………. Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: 2nd Annual Pickleball Tournament Deemed a Success Last year's Battle of the Paddles Pickleball Tournament, which pitted Commissioner Keli Gambrill's team against Dr. Jatunn Gibson's for Meals on Wheels, expanded this year to include all county departments. Held at Jim Miller Park, the event featured eight pickleball courts and aimed to foster inter-departmental relationships and boost morale. Keith Mazonkey from Human Resources and Jennifer Christoffersen shared how it was a chance to meet colleagues and improve teamwork. The tournament raised over $5,700 for Meals on Wheels, surpassing last year's total and helping feed 50 seniors. Positive feedback might lead to future expansions. Donations can still be made online until this Friday. STORY 2: 1830s-era East Cobb Cabin Moved to Safety The historic Power-Jackson Cabin, built in the 1830s, has been disassembled due to threats from development and deterioration. Originally located at 4701 Post Oak Tritt Road, it was donated to Cobb Landmarks and will be reassembled this fall at Hyde Farm Park, thanks to a $321,000 SPLOST fund allocation. The cabin, a key piece of Cobb County's early history, faced severe damage but is being meticulously moved with detailed documentation to facilitate reconstruction. The relocation, while necessary, is bittersweet for preservationists. The cabin's restoration will help preserve a rare example of early settler architecture in the region. STORY 3: Embattled Cobb Superior Court Clerk Outraising Opponent Cobb Superior Court Clerk Connie Taylor, a Democrat, has raised nearly $20,600 for her reelection, double the amount raised by her Republican opponent Deborah Dance, who has gathered about $10,550, including a personal loan of $4,400. Taylor, who has faced controversy over her office's performance and handling of fees, has a substantial $14,200 remaining in her campaign fund. Dance has about $5,200 left after spending half of her raised funds. Despite past controversies, Taylor won 53% of the vote in the May primary against three challengers. The Superior Court is currently under a judicial emergency due to issues with Taylor's office, extending deadlines for legal actions. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: DRAKE STORY 4: Cobb to Consider Townhome Development off Veterans Memorial The Cobb Planning Commission will review a proposal for a 42-unit townhome development on a 6.5-acre site at 1558 Veterans Memorial Highway. Developer Thomas Orok's plan includes two-story, for-sale townhomes ranging from 2,910 to 3,452 square feet, with three to four bedrooms and two-car garages. The project, which requires rezoning from commercial to residential, aims to serve as a transition between single-family homes and commercial areas. Originally scheduled for March, the case has been delayed several times and is now set for Tuesday's meeting. STORY 5: Vinings Man Drowns in Lake Lanier Vinings resident Hasani Kamau Widemond, 46, drowned at Lake Lanier over the holiday weekend. Widemond was swimming from shore to his boat at Bethel Park when he disappeared under the water. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Forsyth County Sheriff's Office, and fire departments from Forsyth and Hall Counties responded. Widemond was located about 25 feet underwater using sonar and recovered by divers with the aid of Hall County Fire's Remote Operated Vessel. We'll be back in a moment Break: INGLES 3 STORY 6: 'A Gem of a City': Popular History Book Returns to William Root House Cobb Landmarks and Historical Society has reissued its popular 432-page book, "Marietta: The Gem City of Georgia," after a two-year hiatus. Written by Douglas Frey and originally published in 2010, the book explores 50 historic Marietta homes and their inhabitants, featuring around 300 color photos by Jim DiVitale. After selling out in 2022 and being sought after for high prices online, the book is now available again at the William Root House Museum and Garden gift shop. The reprint was made possible by a $10,000 donation. The book, which highlights Marietta's architectural and historical charm, is priced at $100, or $80 with a Cobb Landmarks membership. STORY 7: National Hunting and Fishing Day in Georgia On September 28, Georgia will celebrate National Hunting and Fishing Day with multiple free events across the state. This day, recognized by a recent proclamation from Gov. Brian Kemp, highlights the cultural and environmental significance of hunting and fishing. Established by Congress and President Nixon in 1972, NHF Day acknowledges the conservation contributions of sportsmen and women, who have raised over $57 billion for conservation efforts. Activities include family fishing events, Outdoor Adventure Days with archery and shooting, and a free fishing day where no licenses are required. A former Secret Service agent said counter-snipers at the Pennsylvania rally where a would-be assassin wounded former President Donald Trump should have had "360-degree coverage" of the event and surrounding buildings."I don't know how many they had, but they usually always look for 360-degree coverage," former Secret Service agent Anthony Cangelosi told Business Insider. "So that's one thing that's going to be considered."The Federal Bureau of Investigation identified the shooter as a 20-year-old man from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.Cangelosi, who is now an adjunct professor at the John Jay School of Criminal Justice at the City University of New York, said the primary question law enforcement would likely be asking is how the suspect could have made it to the top of a nearby building undetected.Butler Township Sheriff Michael Slupe told The Washington Post that a local officer encountered the suspect before the shooting but dropped to the ground because he did not have his weapon. For a large event where the president or former president is speaking, the Secret Service on the scene would typically work with law enforcement to design a "site plan" with a mock-up of the event space and all surrounding buildings, Cangelosi said. This plan will be paramount for investigators in determining what possible failures occurred during the rally, according to Cangelosi."All the posts - meaning personnel, Secret Service or uniformed police officers, where they were positioned, what their duties were to secure that post, what considerations were given to the outer perimeter, in this case, the other building," will be included in the site plan, Cangelosi said.Cangelosi said the Secret Service would sometimes use "counter-sniper response units," which are posted on the ground and can quickly move into position if they notice a threat."However, time could also be of the essence, right?" Cangelosi said. "You might not have the ability to send a counter-sniper response team up to the location"Snipers often quickly have to make a decision when they notice a potential threat like an open window or a person sitting on a roof Cangelosi said."What if you find out, 'Oh, I just killed a kid, 20-year-old kid who loves the protected, and he couldn't get in the venue, and he just wanted to get up on that roof,'" Cangelosi added. "No one wants to be in that position."Cangelosi said he expects the Secret Service to amp up security at future events moving forward. Trump has already confirmed he plans to speak at the Republican National Convention in Wisconsin next week."The Secret Service is well aware of the fact that they have to be perfect all of the time," Cangelosi said. "And the one time you're not, it's going to bring an increased scrutiny."Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.
At a Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, rally on July 13, former President Donald Trump narrowly dodged an assassination attempt. The moment left both parties reeling as they came to terms with a landscape that prioritizes extremes and is ripe for political violence. Just 48 hours later, the Republican National Convention kicked off in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Trump, with a bandage over his ear, pushed for unity within his party and across the country. But did his speech on the last day of the convention reveal actual changes in his vision for the GOP?Earlier in the week, Trump announced his vice presidential nominee: Ohio Senator JD Vance. Their messages of isolationism, nativism, and a reinforcement of traditional masculinity were echoed by the convention's speakers. With the demographics of the Republican and Democratic parties going through dramatic changes, will Trump and Vance's vision appeal to women voters?
This week, we delve into the dramatic incident at former President Donald J. Trump's rally in Butler, PA. Imagine the scene: Trump was on stage, speaking about illegal immigration, when suddenly, chaos erupted. Multiple shots were fired toward the stage, resulting in one tragic death and two critical injuries. Secret Service agents swiftly whisked Trump off the stage, his right ear visibly bloodied. Despite the pandemonium, Trump, ever the showman, managed to pump his fist in a defiant gesture before being hurried away. The suspected shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old from Bethel Park, PA, was killed by counter snipers. This tragic event is being investigated as an assassination attempt and a potential act of domestic terrorism. As details continue to emerge, the FBI and Attorney General's office are working tirelessly to piece together the shooter's motives and actions. Federal law enforcement discovered an AR-15-type semiautomatic rifle on Crooks and three explosive devices, adding a chilling layer to the investigation. Crooks, described by former classmates as intelligent but solitary, had a history that is now under intense scrutiny. We'll break down the sequence of events, from the first shots to the aftermath, examining the security lapses and the heroic actions of the Secret Service. We'll also hear from witnesses and analyze the impact of this attempt on Trump's campaign and security protocols. The rally, intended to galvanize Trump's base, turned into a scene of terror, with attendees screaming, seeking cover, and some even praying amidst the chaos. The Secret Service's swift response likely saved many lives, but the incident raises serious questions about rally security and the ease with which the shooter reached his firing position. Join me as we navigate through this tense and gripping story, reflecting on the implications for political rallies and public safety. We'll also discuss the broader context of political violence in America and what this means for future public events. How did Crooks manage to get so close to the rally with such dangerous weapons? What can be done to prevent future incidents? We'll explore these questions and more, providing you with the latest updates and expert insights. Tune in to Episode 150 of "What Are We Doing" for all the details and insights you need to understand this week's shocking news. Two landmark Supreme Court decisions—the Trump immunity case and the overturning of the Chevron doctrine—represent the legal institutionalization of the core values of conspirituality: self-sovereignty, natural immunity or divine protection, and “doing your own research.” The attempted assassination on the former president forged the essence of these two rulings into a stunning still life of Trump's image for those who love him and those he's appointed to serve him. Julian and Matthew wade into the flood, and what might happen at ground zero of conspiracy theory formation—this time veering left as well as right. John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and now Trump. America is no stranger to attempted and successful political assassinations, but something feels different about this time. On July 13, former President Donald J. Trump survived an assassination attempt during a rally in Butler, PA, that left one bystander dead and two others seriously injured. The shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, PA, is now dead. While Crooks was a registered Republican, and the FBI has yet to identify a motive, the Republican Party has wasted no time in pinning the assassination on Democrats and the left. In response, Democrats and Biden are putting up little defense, capitulating to the right-wing narrative and issuing vague pronouncements against "charged rhetoric" and "political violence." On July 13, former U.S. President and Republican frontrunner Donald Trump experienced a near-death incident when he was shot in the ear during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. The FBI identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, labelling it a potential act of domestic terrorism. How did such a security lapse occur under the US Secret Service's watch? An eyewitness claimed he reported a suspicious man with a rifle on the roof, but authorities ignored him. What does this reveal about the security measures in place? With the US elections just months away, could this incident give Trump a decisive edge over Biden? What new challenges do Democrats face now? In this episode of Geeta's World, our host, Anna Priyadarshini, and the foreign affairs editor at India Today, TV Today Network, Geeta Mohan, discuss! The 20-year-old man who tried to assassinate former President Donald Trump first came to law enforcement's attention at Saturday's rally when spectators noticed him acting strangely outside the campaign event. The tip sparked a frantic search but officers were unable to find him before he managed to get on a roof, where he opened fire.In the wake of the shooting that killed one spectator, investigators were hunting for any clues about what may have drove Thomas Matthew Crooks, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, to carry out the shocking attack. The FBI said they were investigating it as a potential act of domestic terrorism, but the absence of a clear ideological motive by the man shot dead by the Secret Service led conspiracy theories to flourish.Available on all podcast streaming services:https://thehighestpointpodcast.buzzsprout.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thehighestpointpodcastSupport the show: https://www.cash.app/$highestpointenthttps://www.paypal.com/paypalme/highestpointpodcast#trump #donaldtrumpnews #america #thehighestpointpodcast #newsSupport the Show.
#trump #truecrime #secretservice On July 13, 2024, former President Donald J. Trump survived an assassination attempt. President Biden ordered a full review of security for former President Trump's Pennsylvania rally and to assess the security in place for the Republican National Convention this week in Milwaukee. On Sunday afternoon, Trump said he would head to Wisconsin for the RNC as planned. He'd thanked the nation on Sunday morning for its concern in the wake of an attempt on his life the evening before. Throughout the morning, Republicans and Democrats alike called for lowering the temperature of political rhetoric. Amid those calls, there were questions about how this happened and descriptions of the rally as a “security failure.” One person at the rally was also killed, and two others were critically injured, officials said. Overnight, the FBI named the suspect in the shooting at a rally in Butler, Pa., but offered no other details. Authorities said Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pa., was involved. Today, I am joined by James E. Craig, the 42nd Chief of Police for the City of Detroit. About my guest: James E. Craig has dedicated his life to service, spending more than four decades in law enforcement, leaving the cities he served safer than he found them. In 2013, Craig was asked by Governor Rick Snyder to serve as the 42nd Chief of Police for the City of Detroit, his hometown. Over the next eight years, Craig led a department of 2800 sworn and civilian personnel and achieved great success, propelling the DPD into the 21st century. Accomplishments as the Chief of Police in Detroit include a significant reduction in violent crime rates through the utilization of data and analysis to support proactive policing, quicker response times for priority 911 calls, and the institution of programs to cut gang membership in at-risk communities. Craig received widespread acclaim for his leadership during the unrest in the summer of 2020. While other cities were marred by looting, riots, and destruction, Detroit stood firm, a model for other cities to strive for. This generation's question will undoubtedly be “incompetence or malice?”. The details of the attempted assassination of President Trump have already surpassed the exceptionally questionable details of Dealey Plaza, with the only collection of details holding back the open idea that this was a government-sanctioned incident being the gross incompetence displayed by most of the security professionals during this event. While the details of this assassination attempt will be debated for decades, the larger implications are exceptionally clear. This incident was without question intended to resolve differently than it did. Reflecting on what would have happened if the attack was a success, may be a rather sobering prospect but one which may offer operational benefit as the election inches closer.Analyst: S2A1//END REPORT//

(AURN News) — Former President Donald Trump is urging national unity and maintaining his plans for the Republican National Convention, which starts Monday, following the assassination attempt near Pittsburgh over the weekend. The incident, which occurred Saturday, involved 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. Details behind the motive for the attack remain unknown as the FBI continues its investigation. In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump expressed gratitude for public support and attributed his safety to divine intervention. "Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers yesterday, as it was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening," he wrote. The former president also acknowledged other victims of the incident, including those wounded and one fatality. He called for resilience and unity in the face of what he termed "Wickedness." Despite initial considerations to delay his trip, Trump announced Sunday he would proceed with his scheduled appearance at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. "I cannot allow a “shooter,” or potential assassin, to force change to scheduling, or anything else. Therefore, I will be leaving for Milwaukee, as scheduled," he stated. The FBI is actively seeking information from the public, encouraging the submission of any relevant photos or videos to assist in the ongoing investigation. Learn more about your ad choices. (AURN News) - FBI Director Christopher Wray condemned the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump as "an attack on democracy" during a press briefing on Sunday, following the shooting at a campaign rally outside Pittsburgh that left one dead and two critically wounded. The shooting took place on Saturday afternoon when shots rang out during Trump's speech, striking the former president in the ear. Secret Service agents swiftly intervened, escorting Trump from the scene. The presidential candidate was seen raising his fist several times, signaling to supporters that he was okay. "What we witnessed yesterday was nothing short of an attack on democracy and our democratic process," Wray stated. "An attempt to assassinate a presidential candidate can only be described as absolutely despicable and will not be tolerated in this country." The FBI has identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. Crooks was killed at the scene, though details surrounding his death were not immediately disclosed. In an unprecedented move, President Joe Biden addressed the nation regarding the shooting, calling for unity and a reduction in political tensions. "My fellow Americans, I want to speak to you tonight about the need for us to lower the temperature in our politics and to remember, while we may disagree, we are not enemies," Biden said in his address. The president also emphasized the importance of national unity in the face of such a distressing event. "We're neighbors. We're friends, coworkers, citizens. And, most importantly, we are fellow Americans. And we must stand together," he stated. "Thankfully, former President Trump is not seriously injured. I spoke with him last night. I'm grateful he's doing well. And Jill and I keep him and his family in our prayers," the president added. As the investigation continues, questions remain about the shooter's motives and any potential broader implications for campaign security. Wray was nominated by Trump in 2017 to lead the FBI. Yesterday, Donald Trump was shot at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. A few minutes into the rally, a gunman opened fire, and a bullet pierced the former president's ear. He ducked to the ground, the Secret Service piled on top of him, supporters screamed, and chaos erupted through the crowd. Trump suffered a superficial wound, but one rally attendee was killed and two others were critically injured. Moments after the shooting, images of Trump flooded the internet—fist clenched, blood running down his face, mouthing “fight” to a dazed crowd. It was the first time in over 40 years that an elected president was wounded in an assassination attempt. The gunman was immediately killed. He was later identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. The internet was, of course, soon overrun with speculation, conspiracies, over-the-top rhetoric, and the assignation of blame—most of which demanded that the shooter share responsibility for his evil actions with certain aspects of the media or certain politicians. It's all a stark reminder of the deep polarization of our politics, and that political violence is something of a constant in American life. On the ground at the rally, watching the mayhem unfold, was Salena Zito. Salena is a reporter for the Washington Examiner and a contributor to The Free Press. She was standing four feet from the president when the first shots rang out. Today, we discuss what she witnessed at the rally. We discuss her interactions with President Trump immediately before the shooting, the shooter's possible motive, what it means for the 2024 election, and more importantly, what it means for the country. He was taken to a hospital, and the Secret Service said he was “safe.” The Secret Service also said its personnel had killed the shooter, whom federal law enforcement officials identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old from Bethel Park, Pa. “This evening we had what we are calling an assassination attempt against our former president, Donald Trump,” Kevin Rojek, a special agent at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, said during a news conference at the Butler Township Police Department on Saturday. Here's what we know about the shooting. The Former President Mr. Trump ducked quickly after the shots began and as members of the crowd began to scream. Secret Service agents then rushed Mr. Trump off the stage. As he was escorted to his motorcade, Mr. Trump, whose face and right ear were bloodied, pumped his fist in a defiant gesture to the crowd. In the wake of the tragedy at former President Donald Trump's rally in Butler, we wanted to try to bring you as much information as is known at this time about what happened yesterday evening and where the investigation stands today. What began as a jubilant rally Saturday for Donald Trump just days before he becomes the official Republican presidential nominee -- ended in mere minutes with the former president bloodied and a suspected would-be assassin shot dead by Secret Service. Governor Josh Shapiro calls the assassination attempt unacceptable. He says the man who was killed at the rally was 50-year-old Corey Comperatore of Sarver -- a husband, a father of two daughters, and a former fire department chief from Butler County. The FBI says the man was 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park -- which is in Allegheny County. Law enforcement officials tell The Associated Press bomb-making materials were found inside Crooks' vehicle and at his home. Investigators say not long before shots rang out, rally goers noticed a man climbing to the top of a roof of a nearby building and warned local police.
