If your therapy techniques only work when you're in the room, that's a problem. Many therapists unintentionally “gatekeep” their expertise and miss opportunities to boost carryover. It's the unexpected downside of being really good at direct clinical work. Don't get me wrong. Clinical judgment does matter. And some things can only be addressed by a trained clinician in a therapy room. But when every decision depends on your personal expertise and physical presence, you've made yourself the bottleneck. In this episode, I'll share how to make the shift towards clear, repeatable systems that others can follow. When you make your methods easier to teach, you make your work scalable, easier to delegate, and far more convincing to leadership.I'll tackle common misconceptions like:✅ “I can't delegate; I don't have direct reports.”✅ “I don't have time for consultation.”✅ “We never get enough time to work on skills.”Plus I share the three steps to making intervention “scalable” so your session plans can start doubling as consultation guides and training tools for others. In this episode, I mentioned Language Therapy Advance Foundations, my program that gives speech pathologists a framework for building language skills needed to thrive in school, social situations, and daily life. You can learn more about the program here: https://drkarenspeech.com/languagetherapyI also mentioned the School of Clinical Leadership, my program that helps related service providers develop scalable executive functioning strategies they can turn into schoolwide initiatives. Flute 360 | Episode 358: "Before the Big 360—An Honest Reflection on Calling, Career, and Identity" As Flute 360 approaches a major milestone—360 episodes and seven years on the mic—this solo episode serves as a quiet, heartfelt pause. In Episode 358, Heidi reflects on the journey behind the podcast: the faith, questions, pivots, risks, and relationships that shaped Flute 360 into more than just a show. This episode is not about announcements or strategies—it's about meaning. With honesty and vulnerability, Heidi shares how calling, career, and identity have evolved over decades in music education, performance, entrepreneurship, and seasons of uncertainty. She speaks directly to musicians who have felt boxed into narrow definitions of success, wrestled with comparison, or questioned whether expanding beyond traditional paths means they somehow "failed." This conversation is an invitation back home—to your artistic identity, to community instead of isolation, and to remembering why you were called to music in the first place. It's a grounding moment before Episode 360, and a reminder that growth, faith, and evolution often happen quietly before they're visible. Main Points: Reflecting on seven years of Flute 360 and what this milestone represents Why separating faith, identity, and teaching was never possible for Heidi Redefining success beyond narrow, traditional music career paths Addressing scarcity mindset, comparison culture, and the "top 1%" myth Why pivoting, expanding, or building your own lane does not mean you failed The importance of community, relationships, and shared stories in music Offering a "way back home" to artistry, purpose, and identity Join the Conversation Inside the Flute 360 Accelerator The next live session will take place on: Saturday, December 20, 2025 from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM Central Time.

Flute 360 | Episode 357: "When Teaching Styles Clash—Handling Music Teacher Conflict Without the Drama" Conflicts between music colleagues are more common than we like to admit — and they can show up in band halls, studios, shared programs, and co-teaching situations. In this episode, Dr. Heidi Kay Begay draws from nearly two decades of experience as a professional flutist and music educator to explore how music teachers can navigate these moments with clarity, kindness, and professionalism. From differing teaching methods and pedagogy to shared student populations and communication breakdowns, Heidi walks through real-life examples and offers grounded guidance for addressing conflict without escalating tension or creating confusion for students. This conversation centers on empathy, clear communication, and keeping student growth at the heart of every professional decision. If you've ever felt unsure how to approach a colleague conversation — or worried about maintaining professionalism when teaching styles differ — this episode offers practical perspective and reassurance. Main Points Discussed: The importance of leading with empathy rather than defensiveness How to listen for tone, body language, and context in difficult conversations Navigating shared studios, co-teaching situations, and overlapping student populations Addressing issues directly instead of avoiding uncomfortable conversations Preventing student confusion when multiple instructors are involved How foundational professional relationships support long-term collaboration Why collaboration matters more than competition in music education Key Takeaways: Conflict does not mean failure; it can be an opportunity for growth Clear, kind communication builds trust and respect Students benefit most when educators are aligned, even with different approaches Professionalism and empathy create healthier teaching environments Putting student success first helps resolve even difficult situations Join the Conversation Inside the Flute 360 Accelerator Many of the scenarios discussed in this episode come directly from coaching conversations inside the Flute 360 Accelerator. Labour's threat to the ancient right of Trial by JuryNick Cohen and Francis FitzGibbon KC - a prominent barrister and former chair of the Criminal Bar Association - discuss the proposal by Labour politicians, including Sir Keir Starmer and David Lammy, the Justice Secretary, to restrict the right to trial by jury, which Nick finds astonishing given Starmer's previous advocacy for human rights and anti-racism. Francis argues against the proposed changes, which Nck thinks could expose ethnic minority defendants to unchecked racism. Francis argues that once the politicians have removed the right to trial by jury - it will be gone for ever.Throwing out the baby with the bathwater! Attacking jury trials to deal with deepening courts crisisThe discussion focuses on the legal system's backlog crisis, with Francis describing it as a disaster with 80,000 cases and delays extending to 2030. Nick and Francis discuss the report by former Appeal Court judge Sir Brian Leveson which Francis criticises for recommending strict curtailment of jury trials, a proposal he viewed as unnecessary and ineffective. Nick raises concerns about the independence of judges reviewing jury trials, suggesting that judges might be inclined to support removing juries from complex cases. Francis argues that judges are no better than juries in investigating human behaviour and coming to the right verdict.Juries, Francis FiztGibbon KCargues, are not just vital for the administration of justice - they give ordinary members of the public a stake in the system of rules and laws by which they are governed.Read all about it! Bessent says White House may ‘veto’ Federal Reserve presidents Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Wednesday he would push a new requirement that the Federal Reserve’s regional bank presidents live in their districts for at least three years before taking office, a move that could give the White House more power over the independent agency. Bessent said that “there is a disconnect with the framing of the Federal Reserve” and added that, “unless someone has lived in their district for three years, we’re going to veto them.” Source: msn.com https://twitter.com/KobeissiLetter/status/1995954684859941373?s=20 In a July 2025 interview, Hassett highlighted the Fed’s origins under the gold standard in 1913 to critique current practices: “When the Federal Reserve was created, we were under the Gold Standard—and the idea that the Fed could print money and then spend $2.5B on a building… I think that we’ve got a real problem of oversight and excess spending.” This aligns with sound money ideals, where gold symbolizes disciplined, non-inflationary currency, but he stops short of calling for reinstatement. Monetary economist Judy Shelton (author of Good as Gold) praised Hassett in July 2025 for referencing the gold standard, noting it as a reminder that “Fed has a lot to answer for” in deviating from that era’s stability. Hassett views Bitcoin as “digital gold” for its scarcity and hedge qualities—echoing sound money without physical backing. OUTRAGE: Minneapolis Police Chief Urges Somali Community to Dial 911 on Masked ICE Agents — Promises Cops Will “Intervene” Against Federal Arrests Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara speaks at a press conference alongside city officials as he urges Somali residents to call 911 on masked individuals Police leadership in Minneapolis is urging the city's Somali community, and other immigrant residents, to call 911 if they spot masked individuals detaining people in their neighborhoods. He urged community members to call 911 if they were unsure whether those enforcing arrests were legitimate law enforcement — and pledged MPD would investigate and log every such call. The plan was simple on paper – use immobilized Russian funds as collateral for loans to keep Ukraine afloat. But Belgium is the custodian of the largest chunk of those assets. If something goes wrong, they're the ones holding the radioactive bag. This isn't some bureaucratic squabble. It's the EU's financing strategy cracking in real time. Prévot's pushback signals the core fear: If Europe touches Russian state money without watertight legal armor, Moscow retaliates – economically, diplomatically, and possibly through countersanctions on European firms. And here's the thing: the Commission thought it had majority backing. Belgium saying “nope” on the morning of rollout is a political body-slam. Happening next? The EU will scramble to rewrite the legal plumbing. Germany and France will pressure Belgium quietly – nobody wants to admit the plan is wobbling. Russia will weaponize the hesitation as proof the West can't agree on how to bankroll Ukraine. And Kyiv? Still waiting for the money that was supposed to be “already there.” Another example of Europe discovering that seizing assets is easy. Using them? That's where the real war begins. Ursula von der Leyen did not state that she received “permission” from the US to seize Russian assets. In a recent appearance at the GLOBSEC forum, she said that she informed the incoming Trump administration (specifically mentioning a conversation with Treasury Secretary nominee Scott Bessent) about the EU’s proposal to use frozen Russian assets as collateral for a “reparations loan” to Ukraine, and that “it was positively received.” https://twitter.com/briefing_block_/status/1996241939931201801?s=20 https://twitter.com/Dubinsky_pro/status/1996242036417028176?s=20 regime. Now the system is falling apart. Yermak is out. The crackdown is collapsing. Ukraine must release all political prisoners. I call on everyone involved in peace talks to demand this from Zelensky. No official reason was given, but the message is clear: there's no deal, yet. Putin's warning didn't help. He said Russia is “ready” for war in Europe and claimed any future conflict would be so fierce that “nobody will be left to negotiate with.” This setback casts doubt on whether a negotiated end to the war is possible anytime soon. It also suggests Kyiv isn't ready to engage on Moscow's terms. What's next: Watch for how Ukraine positions itself diplomatically in the coming weeks, and whether Trump's team will try again with a revised proposal. https://twitter.com/MJTruthUltra/status/1996059724173754525?s=20 situation may quickly arise where there is no one left for us to negotiate with” https://twitter.com/Panchenko_X/status/1996192741508645286?s=20 been given the black mark and is seen globally as corrupt. This collaboration brought us together and still holds the promise of lowering insurance premiums.” Paul noted the plan failed because Democrat AGs fought it in court, but it could now pass through Congress. Here’s why this matters: the current system forces individuals to buy insurance alone, giving them zero bargaining power against massive insurance companies. Association Health Plans let people band together through retailers or organizations to negotiate as a group, the same way large corporations do for their employees. More buyers in a pool means more leverage. More leverage means lower premiums. It costs nothing to implement and simply changes labor law. Competition works. The new leadership team has produced dramatic results which we will produce for you, in detail, as the year wraps up. They will include a historic drop in the homicide rate, along with record disruptions, arrests and drug interdictions. Many of these personnel changes have upset a group of Comey-Wray era disgruntled former agents who prefer the old ways of operating. We are not going back -We have been working on an AI project to assist our investigators and analysts in the national security space. I received an update yesterday and I am happy to report that the product looks promising. More coming on this. – We are in the end stages of a redesign of the FBI crisis management process. The redesign is intended to make information more accessible and transparent in a crisis to enable quick and effective decision making. The project should be complete by the end of the calendar year. -We saved the taxpayers billions of dollars by scrapping the plan for an expensive new FBI headquarters building. We will be moving to the existing Reagan building after decades of fruitless haggling as the current FBI headquarters building crumbles. -We relocated over a thousand headquarters based personnel out of the Washington DC area and into the field to focus on violent crime, crimes against children, and terrorism. Those agents are now working on the mission in those regional offices. -In recognition of the growing threat, and in conjunction with the President's Executive Order, we designed, launched and completed the FBI's first-ever counter-drone school last month. Special thanks to Sebastian Gorka and DDCOS Regan for their help on the project. -The work force apprehended 4 of the FBI's 10 most wanted fugitives, and we are hunting down the rest. -We produced unprecedented disclosures, and took action on documents related to January 6, Crossfire Hurricane, Arctic Frost, and more. -The new leadership team, and the work force, made a series of ANTIFA related arrests in multiple states and assisted in record numbers of deportations and apprehensions. -Some of the culture changes we implemented include eliminating DEI, reforming the physical fitness test, making promotions contingent on real world results, severing ties with the SPLC and ADL, and implementing a new training curriculum to reflect current mission requirements. We dedicated significant personnel and financial assets to streamlining FOIA reform to ensure responsiveness. -We shut down multiple open air drug markets nationwide and, in conjunction with the White House, had 12 fentanyl precursors from China listed. -We created CIO and CTO positions to work with the CFO to find efficiencies and implement new technologies to assist in our mission. We conduct bi-weekly meetings and we have found and eliminated tens of millions of dollars in duplicative contracts, unnecessary real estate, and outdated technology. These are real savings to the taxpayer and each budget dollar allocated is intensely scrutinized for value. -We vastly expanded the overseas biometrics program to stop bad actors before they board a plane or vessel to the US. This gives us the ability to expand the border outwards and prevent the problems from coming here. -We are in the end stages of a reform project on our intelligence analysis positions to make them more responsive to current mission needs. Flute 360 | Episode 354: "Stop Waiting for Perfect Conditions—Practice Without the Flute on Your Face" If you've ever told yourself "I don't have time to practice," this episode will free you. We look at why waiting for the perfect moment keeps musicians stuck—and why some of your most meaningful practice can happen away from the flute. Using the score, your voice, visualization, analysis, listening, and intentional micro-practice, you can move your artistry forward even on the busiest days. What We Discuss: • Why perfectionism keeps you from practicing at all • How to redefine what "counts" as practice • Simple ways to practice without the flute on your face • How 5–10 focused minutes can outshine an hour of distracted work • Creative solutions for practicing inside a busy, very human life Main Takeaway: High-quality, intentional practice doesn't require the perfect setting. You can grow your artistry in the margins of your life—one mindful minute at a time. Join Us Live – December 20, 2025: If you want support creating a practice routine that works with your real life—not against it—come join our next Flute 360 Accelerator session on Saturday, December 20th, 2025 from 11 AM–1 PM CT (Chicago, USA). We'll explore practical, compassionate ways to build momentum even when life feels full.
Where did arbitrary cut scores for norm-referenced language assessments come from, and why do they feel “safer” than relying on clinical judgement?I discuss this question and more in this third part of a three-part series, bilingual SLPs Destiny Johnson and Tiffany Shahoumian-Ruiz join me to continue our conversation about advocating for effective language evaluation practices in schools.Across these conversations, we explore:Sensitivity, specificity, reference standards, and diagnostic accuracyHow test development has evolved over time and why this matters Why the same cut-off score shouldn't apply across all testsThe math behind using two norm-referenced tests, and why it may complicate rather than clarify in some casesOther reasons we test beyond diagnosis (treatment planning, severity, monitoring progress)How do we do we to “sell” the concept of dynamic assessment to administratorsCase studies that show the pitfalls of over-reliance on standardized scoresMisconceptions clinicians often hold, and what they should know about assessmentDifferences in state eligibility standards, and what this means for service decisionsThis series is part myth-busting, part practical strategies, and part advocacy playbook—perfect for clinicians who want to move beyond compliance-driven evaluations toward assessments that truly reflect students' needs.Destiny Johnson, M.S., CCC-SLP, is a bilingual speech-language pathologist (English/Spanish) with a deep passion for culturally responsive assessment and treatment practices, as well as advocating for policy change. Flute 360 | Episode 353: "The Baby Metaphor That Will Change How You Practice Forever" If you've ever played all the "right" notes yet still felt disconnected from your musical expression, this episode will change how you practice forever. In E353, I share a simple baby metaphor that has transformed the way my clients build emotional connection and artistic intention from the very first practice session. Most musicians try to "add expression later," but that approach actually keeps the music from feeling alive. This episode gives you a new way to weave expression, story, and heart into your playing from day one—so your performances feel more honest, more expressive, and fully you. What We Discuss: Why technically strong musicians still feel stuck or emotionally flat How academic training (and jury sheets) could shape our artistic habits The baby metaphor that helps you nurture expression from the beginning Why emotional connection can't be saved for "later" in the process How your life experiences influence colors, vibrato, and phrasing A simple mindset shift to build a deeper relationship with your repertoire Main Takeaway: Expression isn't something you sprinkle on top once the technique is done—it's part of the musical DNA. When you nurture your piece from the very beginning, the final performance becomes more convincing, more expressive, and more you. Flute 360 | Episode 352: "Stop Shrinking—How to Take Up Healthy Artistic Space as a Musician" If you've ever felt yourself shrinking—apologizing for your sound, playing small in rehearsal, or holding back your musical voice—this episode is for you. Today, we explore why so many musicians collapse inward (mentally, emotionally, and physically) and how to reclaim the healthy artistic space you were designed to inhabit. Across all ages and stages—middle schoolers, college musicians, adult hobbyists, professionals—this pattern appears: talented artists who know what they're capable of internally but feel unable to express it externally. In this conversation, I walk you through the deeper causes behind shrinking behavior and how past comments, environments, or relationships may have taught you to retreat rather than rise. We talk about understanding your worth, advocating for yourself, releasing toxic narratives, and learning to stand in a posture—physically and emotionally—that supports confident, resonant playing. This work is not just about tone or technique; it's about identity, healing, and showing up with presence and intention in your artistry. This episode invites you to notice where you've made yourself small, question the origins of those patterns, and begin stepping forward with courage, clarity, and joy. What We Discuss: Why musicians across all ages tend to shrink in certain environments How authority figures and educational settings shape artistic confidence The difference between healthy respect and unhealthy silence Physical collapse vs. mental retreat, and how the body reveals fear How past comments and old narratives get stored in the lungs and breath Why embodied confidence is essential for expressive, resonant playing How reclaiming artistic space restores joy in practicing and performing A framework for identifying where and why you're minimizing yourself Ways to release old stories so your authentic musical voice can emerge Main Takeaway: You are designed to take up healthy artistic space. When you stand in your God-given identity—emotionally, physically, spiritually—your artistry expands. Your breath frees. Your sound opens. Your presence shifts. And the music you share becomes a reflection of the truth of who you are, not who past voices told you to be. The Week 13 NFL slate was a gross one after all of the premium games of the week were taken by Thanksgiving and Black Friday. Somehow, AD Mitchell was the guy you needed. Big weeks from Brock Bowers and Trey McBride were also useful across the DFS and best ball landscape.

Using shopping for a quick hit of dopamine is definitely an emotional regulation issue, and trying to fill any empty hole in our soul with stuff is a very deep situation. BUT that's not what this episode is about. Sometimes, being organized about how we spend money can bring us into reality where we can clearly see how much we spend (if we overspend) or how quickly we make decisions to spend (if we are impulsive with spending) and from there we can make changes. But we have to get organized first so that we can analyze our habits. I'm giving some very easy and quick tips for staying organized and accountable to yourself so that you can spend in a way that won't end up causing you stress or debt.

"The Final Scream," the third and final spec script written LA-Times best-selling writer, Joe Vallese, will be released on the SWRCS podcast on December 19, 2025, on the heels of the Scream (1996) anniversary and the holiday season. This script follows "Scream 7" (the end of the Carpenter sister era, episode 112) and "Screams (a Gale-centric script, episode 155). "The Final Scream" completes this SWRCS trilogy by focusing on Sidney's family (two younger daughters, unlike Tatum in the upcoming Scream 7) and her marriage to Mark Kinciad (not Evans, like in the upcoming Scream 7). The plot is: Sidney Prescott's sense of peace and security is unmoored by the revelation of a dark secret - and a slew of new Ghostface murders hitting too close to home. We hope this script provides some closure to the Sidney/Mark Kincaid fans since Patrick Dempsey did not return for the feature film releasing in February. "The Final Scream" is emotional and contemplative, yet it's also epic and wide in scope. Gale Weathers also assumes an important role and the arc of the film ties into the fabric of the original trilogy. Like the past two scripts, "The Final Scream" will be read aloud by Ryan like an audio book and released as a podcast episode. The script itself will be available to Patreon subscribers Tier 2 and above to read. We hope to see everyone on December 19 for the premiere!
Garret Price and Andrew Mott dive deep into dynasty tight end rankings, building a tier system from scratch. The hosts debate where elite names like Brock Bowers and Trey McBride belong, with McBride making a case for the top spot after his dominant 2024 season. Tyler Warren earns his own tier as a rookie who could break the sophomore slump curse that haunted Kyle Pitts and Sam LaPorta. The discussion gets heated around Colston Loveland and Oronde Gadsden II, with Gadsden landing in the B tier after his explosive stretch with the Chargers. George Kittle gets his own tier due to age concerns, while younger options like Mason Taylor and Harold Fannin Jr. offer speculative upside for rebuilding rosters.
