Old Nation's Grapefruit B-43: A Hoppy Citrus Twist

Old Nation Brewing throws a curveball with their Grapefruit B-43, a Brut IPA that promises a unique flavor adventure. This 7% ABV brew boasts a hefty 60 IBUs, but with a twist – it's bursting with grapefruit character. Old Nation describes it as a special edition B-43, hinting at a base beer with a familiar hoppy profile. They claim the hops and grapefruit flavors "converge" to create a crisp and ultra-drinkable experience. Intrigued? We are too! Let's delve into the look, aroma, and taste of this beer to see if it lives up to its promise of a hoppy citrus explosion.

In 2018, Gold Dot Beer's Kevin Davey was working as the brewmaster of Portland Oregon's Wayfinder Beer when he hit upon the idea of brewing an India Pale Ale with lager yeast. Hazy IPAs had yet to consolidate their grasp as the dominant substyle of the traditional West Coast variety, and this was the age of tinkering; in fact, Davey says his experimental brew was an answer of sorts to Kim Sturdevant's Brut IPA invention in San Francisco during that same era. (Check out the episode directly prior to this one for that story.) Davey called his crisp, clear, dry-hopped creation “Cold IPA” — a nod to its lager-like production process, and the temperature at which it's meant to be enjoyed. Towards the end of the Teens, Kim Sturdavant was brewing at Social Kitchen & Brewery in San Francisco when he developed a new kind of India Pale Ale. He christened his crisp, dry varietal Hop Champagne, and christened the promising new substyle "Brut IPA," a nod to the sparkling wine that this new beer resembled. Brewers in the Bay Area loved it, and drinkers seemed to, too, so Sturdavant had high hopes for the substyle's future. But just a few years later, Brut IPAs rarely earn mention from craft brewing enthusiasts (let alone casual drinkers) and if they do, it's often in the form of a punchline. What happened? Well, that's what Sturdavant joins Taplines today to talk through. Don't forget to like, review, and subscribe! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

It's a sad time in the brewing industry. Bill (William) Coors, an executive at Coors Brewing Company, recently passed away at the age of 102. So, as John Lyda and I tip our glasses to remember the great Bill Coors, we share our thoughts on proper beer filtration methods and brewing styles. John joins me to discuss “lazy brewing” and the brilliant marketing strategy behind the New England Style IPA beers. John shares his concerns about New England's style and filtration methods and why he believes they should adopt better methods. I share why I believe their filtration method is a brilliant marketing strategy and the ying-yang balancing act of achieving optimal bitterness levels. We also share our thoughts on experiencing Brut IPA, and I learn an important lesson on what “dusty yeast” is and how it impacts the clarity of your brew.   This week on Consuming the Craft: ●     Remembering Bill Coors and his amazing accomplishments in the beer brewing industry.●     Why John believes New England Style beers practice “lazy brewing' techniques. ●     Why your filtration method matters when brewing beer.●     Why I believe New England IPA's beer style is a brilliant marketing strategy.●     Experiencing Brut IPA beer.●     Balancing beer bitterness in your beer finish.●     What ‘dusty yeast' means?●     How dusty yeast impacts a beer's clarity.

In times of crisis, people tend to turn to the comfort of familiarity, whether it be revisiting the family recipes they enjoyed as a kid or just attempting to relive some idealized version of the good old days. Over the past year, between quarantines, lockdowns, and political strife, nostalgia has made a big comeback, in everything from the music we’re listening to, to the very beers we drink. I’d be lying if I said I haven’t been reaching for more of my tried-and-true favorites during the pandemic. If the world is crumbling around me, at least the last thing I’ll taste will be the predictable deliciousness of a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale with a soundtrack of glorious ’90s pop to accompany it. But there are more beers from the recent past to rediscover, and none more ripe for such examination than the humble Black IPA. Underappreciated by the masses but beloved by brewers from all over, the Black IPA has always been polarizing. Jonny Garrett dives deep into the history of the misunderstood style, its origins, evolution, and surprising (albeit small) comeback over the past year in his piece titled “Darkest Before the Dawn — The Unlikely Return of Black IPA,” which was published on Good Beer Hunting on April 6, 2021. By “comeback” I mostly mean people waxing poetic about the style, but there have also been a handful of enterprising masochists who refuse to let it go the way of the Brut IPA. Bless them for it. In this conversation, Jonny and I will discuss exactly who is asking for Black IPAs, how examining the style for this story sparked some surprising positivity for him personally, and what it was like talking to beer icons brewing at powerhouses like The Alchemist and Firestone Walker. We’ll also talk about how Hazies and Black IPAs were both born in the same small corner of Vermont, how their paths diverged so completely, and why it’s so important to relish the small joy found in a glass of good beer.

We discuss what has changed since the sale, how much the beer scene has changed since he unleashed Hop Hog on the market and it turns out we can add him to the long list of brewers that don't get NEIPAs, though it seems he does quite like the emerging Brut IPA. As always with Brendan, it's a great chat that offers plenty of insight into the evolving world of beer. Enjoy the conversation.
