Believe it or not, there's more to life than beer. There's also wine, spirits, cider—even NA products! But just because you've mastered beer doesn't mean you can simply begin making and selling other types of alcoholic beverages. When a brewery moves to expand their offerings and enter new markets, there is no shortage of new requirements and restrictions that apply. From new licenses to additional taxes to dealing with state control boards, the entire process can look different from everything you've become accustomed to.Come hear regulatory experts Alex Koral, Sovos ShipCompliant, and Candace Moon, The Craft Beer Attorney, discuss the ins and outs of how your brewery can move beyond beer to reach new customers and excite existing ones with novel offerings.Candace L. Moon is a San Diego-based attorney who has spent the last 15 years dedicating her law practice to the craft beer industry. She has been a member of the Brewers Association since 2009 and served on the Board of Directors for both the San Diego Brewers' Guild and The Pink Boots Society. Ms. Moon has taught Beer Law classes at UCSD, SDSU, and UC Davis. She is the author of “Brew Law 101: California Edition.” Ms. Moon is also the co-founder of Start A Brewery.com, a website for start-up breweries looking for guidance and a bi-monthly podcast of the same name.Based in Boulder, Colorado, Alex Koral is Regulatory General Counsel for Sovos ShipCompliant, where he serves as lead legal researcher for beverage alcohol regulation and has become a leading expert on interstate distribution of alcohol. Infinite Ingredient founder and executive director Katie Muggli joins the Brewbound Podcast to discuss burnout in the brewing industry, how to recognize it, and what resources are available for both industry leaders and individuals. Recognizing burnout can help industry members physically and mentally, and can help strengthen business's bottom line, according to Muggli. May is also Mental Health Awareness Month, so it's a perfect time for this discussion, which was recorded on the trade show floor last month during the Craft Brewers Conference in Las Vegas. Then, Ashlie Randolph chats with Brewbound managing editor Jess Infante about Lifting Lucy, the company Randolph co-founded that helps provide resources to women and non-binary people of color in the industry. Lifting Lucy helps industry members form deeper connections in beer, including providing financial assistance to travel to, attend and speak at conferences and networking events. Randolph is also the global vice president for Pink Boots Society, International and on the advisory board for the National Black Brewers Association (NB2A). Later in the episode, Justin and Zoe review the latest headlines, including Gallo's strategic investment in Montucky Cold Snacks, and Boston Beer Company founder Jim Koch's comments on the company's need to repair its “embarrassing” reputation. Plus, the duo plays Another Round or Tabbing Out on resealable bev-alc packaging and candy-inspired beverages.

The Pink Boot Society national conference Taylor Lane is our guest on Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras. She is local chapter president of the Pink Boots Society. She is also a Lab Supervisor for Gallo Sonoma, and used to do the same job for Russian River Brewing. Also in the studio today is Simone Yingst from the Santa Rosa Central Library. We also have a special guest, Simone Yingst from the Sonoma County Library. She is an adult services librarian at the downtown Santa Rosa library. There is a talk series called The Future is Fermented, happening at the library on May 22. The Pink Boots Society The Pink Boots Society is a national organization founded in 2007 by a woman brewer who realized that she was often the only woman in the room at beer events. They work on education, offer scholarships and support networking among its members. They have expanded their membership from beer people to people who work with any fermented beverages, and from women to also include non-binary persons. The Pink Boots Society National Conference will be in Philadelphia, June 24-26, 2024. See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. Taylor Lane has a Bachelor's and a Master's Degree in Microbiology. She thought that would lead her into the veterinary or pharma field, but she discovered fermentation when she took a class in fermentation while in grad school. That made her realize that she knew all about the processes of making beer and other fermented foods and beverages. A job at Russian River would soon follow, as the lab supervisor. Taylor continues to thrive in the same role at Gallo Sonoma. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. A delivery has just arrived from Old Possum and Flagship BBQ who are putting on a birthday event soon. As we know, Flagship is now operating the kitchen at Old Possum. They were here on BHH in January to announce it. Visit Homerun Pizza, home of the Knuckleball! Fresh pizza dough made from scratch daily, la pizza è deliziosa! The subject of the talk on May 22 is Burnout in a Passion-based Business. The Future is Fermented, happening at the library on May 22.

Happy International Women's Day! We launched the first-ever Pink Boots Malt, a craft base malt for brewers and distillers that raises funds for the Pink Boots Society. As part of the same global family of brands, Country Malt Group (CMG), Canada Malting Co. (CMC) and Great Western Malting (GWM) all share a passion for empowering women and non-binary individuals across the supply chain – from the barley fields to our malthouses, and from our distribution centers to the taprooms. In this episode, we're speaking with the dreamers and makers behind the Pink Boots Malt; Cait Schut and Hailey Nelson from CMG's marketing team, Brandi Stephens and Shelly Aller from GWM's Pocatello facility, and Amanda Kozina from GWM's Malt Innovation Center. The team dives into the vision, specs, and production for this exciting new seasonal product. Then we go behind the scenes for a live recording from one of our inaugural sister brews with the Pink Boots Malt, in Calgary. The Pink Boots Malt will be available in a distribution center near you later this month. Contact your sales rep to be the first to know when it's available. Learn more at countrymalt.com/pinkboots
International Women's Day is March 8, and we're celebrating it like a girl, beer in hand, mountain bikes in between our legs. Ok, maybe not riding while drinking, but you get the picture. We're doing what we do best, and Samantha Danen from Third Space Brewing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is doing what she does best.Meet Samantha Danen from Third Space BrewingSamantha Danen, Head Production Manager, and the rest of the team at Third Space Brewing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, are celebrating by teaming up with the Pink Boots Society for its annual collab brew day and beer release of Like a Girl.Sam started homebrewing in college and fell in love with all aspects of beer. As a art history major, it was easy for her to see the art of brewing. She could compare art and beer together. Beer being its own medium.Starting at Third Space in 2020, Sam worked her way up from brewers assistant to where she is now, always appreciating beer and brewing as an art form and a collaborative and welcoming space. Not only is this Sam's story, this is a story for women in the brewing industry. A story about collaboration bringing women back into the fold of a story they began hundreds of years ago. About Pink Boots Society and Pink Boots Collab Brew DaySam's recipe for the Pink Boots Collab Brew Day, Like a Girl, resonates that belief in all aspects of the process. As a former Pink Boots Chapter Head and current member, Sam loves bringing women together to brew beer. It's educational, but more importantly, it builds community and gives women a voice in a male dominated industry.Pink Boots Society ensures that women have a place in craft beer today. An international organization for women and nonbinary individuals who work in the fermented beverage industry, Pink Boots Society provides educational opportunities for their members. Their biggest fundraiser is their collaborative brew day centered around International Women's Day.Drink Like a GirlLet's continue the conversation. Talk about women in brewing. Use you voice. Ask questions. Be curious. And if you love beer, by all means, drink Like a Girl. After all, beer is actually a girly drink. Thanks, Alewives! You've paved the path, and we're finally getting back on it. Or maybe, we're paving a new one.Like a Girl is released on March 8, International Women's Day, in the taproom at Third Space Brewing.Click here for the full show notes, including links, images, resources, and more.Stay Connected with Third Space BrewingThird Space Brewing1505 W. When it comes to careers, longevity is hard to come by. Most surveys and job-focused websites will tell you Americans find a new job roughly every three-to-five years. The average American worker changes some aspect of their career—if not their entire professional focus—multiple times over their life. So, when you find someone who's really committed to the people they work with and those they work for, you know something must be going right. Such is the case for Jess Griego, now the chief operations officer and co-owner of New Mexico's Bosque Brewing, which has nine different locations in the state. A decade ago, Jess started with the brewery as a server and has worked up through a variety of jobs, also becoming an equity partner in 2019. But her roots aren't just with the company, they're interwoven in New Mexico itself as a native, college graduate, proud resident, and a co-lead for the state chapter of the Pink Boots Society. Jess has also taken her longtime focus on local to a national stage, where she's a newly elected pub brewery representative to the Brewers Association's board of directors. For as much as beer industry pros tout “local” as core to what they do, that often means locally-produced products. In this conversation, we get about as local as we can get as Jess reflects back on her years with Boseque, what inspires her as a leader, and what it takes to oversee a rapidly expanding brewery today. Growth is hard to come by for beer these days, but Jess and Bosque offer a unique example of what happens when you play the long game, in your career and in your business plan.

This episode features a conversation with the legendary Teri Fahrendorf, the long-time brewmaster and founder of Pink Boots Society. She's here for a wide ranging conversation about her career, brewery safety, recipe development, creativity, and forging a path in the beer industry. After a storied career in beer, Fahrendorf recently entered a working retirement. She's helmed breweries, judged competitions around the world, and founded the Pink Boots Society, which she later ran for nearly a decade. She's been a safety advocate, outspoken critic, historian, and sounding board in her more than 30 year career. After countless brew days and then a turn selling raw ingredients, she's focused today on her art, crafting pottery from her studio in the pacific northwest. It's another creative outlet for this one-time computer programmer who forged a career through determination and will when the craft brewing industry was still in its infancy. She joined the show in early January 2024 to share some stories and insights, more of which can be found on her her blog and website terifahrendorf.com Fahrendorf isn't leaving beer completely – she says she still plans to judge competitions and stay involved in various other ways, but for the first time since the 1980s bee is not her primary job focus. This seems like a good time for an introspective. As always, our annual Best in Beer issue includes different perspectives. Our subscribers and listeners—that's you!—have spoken, and we've compiled your votes for the Reader's Choice lists, including your Top 25 Beers (https://beerandbrewing.com/best-in-beer-2023-readers-top-25-beers-of-2023/). Plus, our Craft Beer & Brewing Best 20 Beers in 2023 (https://beerandbrewing.com/the-best-20-beers-in-2023/) are the culmination of a year of blind tasting by our review panel and then by our editors, achieving an internal consensus on beers of the greatest character and technical excellence. However, this issue also is a chance for some of our writers and editors to sound off a bit, as we share our favorite beers and highlights of the past year. No blind tasting here—for these hedonistic picks, we fully embrace the contexts in which we enjoyed these beers. That's the idea behind our Best in Beer Critic's Lists, and those are what we explore in this special, once-per-year episode. Featuring thoughtful (and at times heartfelt) takes from Alex Kidd, Kate Bernot, Stan Hieronymus, Courtney Iseman, and Joe Stange—for Jamie's, be sure to read the print edition—these lists give us the chance to spotlight many more of the most enjoyable beers and drinking experiences of 2023, as well as some thoughts on the state of the brewing industry and beer culture today. It's been another year of great beers—and we've tasted thousands—but they can't all be “the Best.” What sets certain beers apart, to not only light up our palates and our senses, but also our brains and our conversations? Winnowed down by a year of our review panel's blind judging, and then selected by more blind judging among our editors and top writers, our Best 20 Beers in 2023 represent the highest levels of excellence, character, and drinkability. In this special once-per-year episode, Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine® cofounder and editorial director Jamie Bogner convenes with managing editor Joe Stange to share results of the annual Readers' Choice poll—including your Top 25 beers and favorite breweries—as well as their Best 20 Beers in 2023, discussing each beer in turn and what made them shine at the table and in the glass. In Geneva, Illinois, Art History Brewing (https://arthistorybrewing.com) doesn't want to be everything to everyone, but they're committed to brewing traditional styles well, while also making them relevant to today's drinkers. That message has resonated in the broader Chicago beer world, winning them fans among some of the most influential bars and retailers in the city. For head brewer Greg Browne, it's the logical outcome of a career spent brewing these beers in smaller ways at other breweries. And for co-owner Tom Rau, it's a way to focus on beers about which they're personally passionate, meanwhile offering something different and beer-focused to the broad community of Chicago drinkers. In this episode, they discuss: innovation through focusing on traditional styles achieving the flavor results of decoction through other brewing means building color in Czech-style pale lager using the Hochkurz (https://beerandbrewing.com/short-and-high-the-hochkurz-mash/) mash and an oversized lauter tun ingredient selection for Northern German-style pils and Czech-style dark lager designing and brewing smoked lagers choosing yeasts for specific, regionally-inspired English-style ales And more. In this GABF Gold! episode, we dive into the saison category. First up is Jason zumBrunnen, cofounder of Denver's Ratio Beerworks (https://ratiobeerworks.com), recent gold medal winner for their King of Carrot Flowers carrot saison (and 2020 silver medal winner in American-Belgo style ale for their Dear You saison dry hopped with Citra, upon which King of Carrot Flowers is based). He dives into saison standards, like building body despite fermenting with diastaticus saison yeast, single infusion mashing in saison, before drilling down on the particulars of using carrot juice—processing, addition timing, maintaining color and haze, and even the secret ingredient that helps promote the idea of sweetness in the very dry beer. Next is Jeremy Claeys, head brewer for Charlotte's Protagonist Beer (https://protagonistbeer.com), recent gold medal winner for the Kal-El classic saison (and 2022 gold medal winner in American-Belgo style ale for the dry hopped saison Bizarro, as well as 2021 gold medal winner in Specialty Saison for Air is Beautiful). He talks through their philosophy of brewing classic styles with small twists that make traditional beers their own, building character through grain, simplified step mashing, the benefits of high temperature fermentation, blending saison yeasts, bottle conditioning, and lagering both bottled and kegged saison for a cleaner and smoother beer. In 2007, after two decades of professional brewing, Teri Fahrendorf hit the road as an itinerant brewer for an odyssey spanning thousands of miles, dozens of brewery visits and collaborations, and a third of a calendar year. Along the way, she met with other female brewers like her, and they all wanted a way to connect with their colleagues, to find community as women working in a male-dominated industry. Armed with an email list and a pair of cheap pink boots gifted to her before her departure, Teri began laying the groundwork for what would become — you guessed it — the Pink Boots Society, now the beer industry's leading professional advocacy group for women and nonbinary people. This week we meet Sherri Dill, Lead Production Brewer at Capital Brewing Company and ACT State Coordinator of The Pink Boots Society. Sherri has just appeared the face of the first episode of a new beer education series created by Capital Brewing, which you can see on Instagram or download. As you'll hear it's what could be described as a non-traditional career path for a brewer, but also highlights the changing industry. It also gives Sherri some interesting insights into the industry and how brewing needs to change and adapt to a changing market. This episode of Beer is a Conversation is presented by HPA. People in the beer industry often tout the aspiration of using the drink as a way to “build community.” What they typically mean is that interacting over a beer is meant to be some kind of equalizer, allowing humans to connect in a better way. In this episode we meet someone who has taken this idea to heart, acting as one of the most prominent community builders in the Arizona beer scene for several years. Ayla Kapahi is the director of brewing operations for Tuscon's Borderlands Brewing, but is so much more. She's started professional development organizations, including co-founding the Southern Arizona chapter of the Pink Boots Society, which focuses on developing talent and skills among women and non-binary individuals. Ayla also helped launch Las Hermanas, an annual collaboration beer made with female brewers from both sides of the U.S./Mexico border. On the brewing side of things, she's focused on using ingredients and flavor experiences unique to the Southwest as a way to give Borderlands beer a truer sense of home. All these effomjmjrts are part of an ongoing desire to connect people. And as you'll hear from Ayla, while she's had a hard time defining what success means for her career so far, it's these examples that help her stop and realize the impact she's able to have, relationships she's created, and how much more she can do in the future. We all work to find the “why” in our lives—what drives us and inspires us—and you're about to learn how finding a career in beer helped Ayla find hers, and is encouraging others to do the same.

Devon Kreps, the owner of 7venth Sun Brewery, has a degree in Fermentation Science from Oregon State University and gained experience at Anheuser-Busch's research pilot facility in St. Louis. She was also the Production Manager at Sweetwater Brewing during its expansion from 25,000 to 60,000 barrels. In 2012, she opened the first 7venth Sun Brewery location in Dunedin, which features 10 taps and outdoor seating. This location, the brewery says, is now treated as a pilot facility, focusing on producing Saisons, Belgian beers, Brett IPAs, Hazy IPAs, and "fun" lagers. The Tampa location, which opened in 2017 in a former VFW roller skating rink, is a larger production plant with a tasting room and outdoor beer garden. 7venth Sun Brewery has created a pair of seltzers called Pink Tax and Blue Tax. They are identical recipes except for the color- and the price. According to the brewery, The Pink Tax refers to the practice of charging higher prices for goods and services marketed to women. Razors, for example, can be up to 66% more expensive for women than for men, despite being the same product. This practice is seen as a form of gender discrimination, as it disproportionately affects women and non-binary individuals. In a switch: The Blue Tax seltzer is priced higher than the Pink Tax seltzer, and 100% of the additional cost, as well as proceeds from both seltzers will be donated to the Pink Boots Society. Kreps explains how all this came about and also talks about Tampa Beer Week and the growing of a business. For more Drink Beer, Think Beer check out All About Beer. Listen, I know it can seem like some of us at San Diego Magazine basically eat tacos and taste beer for a living. But it's in pursuit of the story. Whatever it takes to get to the grist of it all. For you. You deserve this. And if that raises our BAC a tad, we're there for you. For Stone Brewing's Laura Ulrich, on the other hand, sampling IPAs is a major part of a hard day's work. Officially one of Stone's “small batch brewers,” it's Laura's job to research and develop new suds, tweaking recipes—and naming brews after her favorite songs—using Stone's seven-barrel system in Escondido. She devised two new versions of our beloved Delicious IPA: Delicious Citrus and Delicious Double, both as perfect with a Wagyu patty as their forerunner. Laura's now one of the key creatives in the Stone brewing operation. But it didn't happen overnight. She started out 19 years ago on the packaging line. She was a brewer, then a brewery trainer, before landing her spot among the small-batch masterminds. “I've seen the whole house,” she says. Laura's also a founding member of Pink Boots Society, a nonprofit that highlights women's contributions to craft beer, as well as wine, spirits, and other brews. The org offers scholarships to help close the industry's education gap and holds brew days for women to come together and invent new blends. Laura also heads Women of Stone, inspiring, supporting, and promoting the company's women employees and brainstorming ways to draw more women to Stone. The mission, she says, is to make sure that women know, “in craft beer, there's a place for you.” Troy and David sat down with Laura in the heart of Stone's Balboa Park bistro to eat burgers, drink Delicious IPA, and learn about Laura's envy-inducing job and her work to shatter her industry's glass ceiling. Her tip for aspiring beer makers: Make sure you've got a professional email. Laura reveals that Stone nearly passed on her application after taking a peek at her Yahoo handle. (For what it's worth, Laura, I would immediately buy IPAs from anyone contacting me from “hippiestink@something.com”) In news, New York institution Prince Street Pizza touches down in downtown San Diego; local chefs settle old beef with hot lamb (there will probably be lamb) on new Food Network series Superchef Grudge Match; formerly of La Dona in O.B., the hard-working chef Gaby Lopez helms a new namesake restaurant, Casa Gabriela in La Mesa; and Heritage Barbeque launches 10,000 square feet of beer and Texas brisket in Oceanside. This week's “Two People, Fifty Bucks” will make you crave Italian: Laura's filling up on bread and burrata at Tribute Pizza; David's ordering ahead at Little Italy's Mona Lisa; and Troy embraces balance this wellness month by pairing bike rides with lardo pizza at Cardellino. See ya next week.

Teri Fahrendorf was headed on the fast track in high tech Silicon Valley in the '80's. But she quickly learned that the cubicle life wasn't for her and she created a second act as one of the first female brewmasters in the emerging craft beer industry.
