In This EpisodeEnd-of-year check-in, burnout vs bandwidth, and a listener-requested deep dive on ICS — plus a What3Words tangent (because of course) and a big 2026 announcement from Brian. The crew rolls into the final stretch of 2025 running on fumes: Brian's voice is cooked, Adam's been sick for weeks, Doug is… at the emergency vet because a dog ate a sock (classic). The guys talk holiday reality, emotional bandwidth, and how hard it is to truly “shut off” work. Then a listener (Jeff) hits them with a solid request: let's talk ICS — from small incidents to big ones, staffing, comms, unified command, and why the chain-of-command matters even when it feels inconvenient.Matt ties it into his own real-world lesson: don't bypass your assignment / supervisor just because the Division is “right there.” ICS isn't just for the person talking on the radio — it's for the whole system listening.Matt also breaks down What3Words (and how it helps with remote rescues and wildland ops), Adam talks unified command challenges, and Brian sets the record straight on how volunteer departments handle ICS on the East Coast. And then… Brian drops the news: a new North Carolina fire-service podcast is officially live.Key TopicsEnd-of-year fatigue + why the “heaviness” of late December is realEmotional bandwidth and the struggle of checking work email nonstopHousekeeping: Patreon, merch, and what the team needs to grow itMoment of silence for fallen first respondersThoughts & prayers for Sam from Fire Tech and his dog battling Lyme diseaseListener request from Jeff: Tabletop discussion on ICSWhy ICS works best when you don't skip the chainUnified command realities with fire/EMS/law (and why it breaks down)Volunteer vs career: ICS isn't a staffing issue — it's a culture & training issueWildland fire ICS: strike teams, divisions, branches, briefings, and why it scalesWhat3Words + Avenza maps for remote rescue location accuracyCall to action: Rate ICS in your area from 0–10Big news: Brian launches “Carolina Fire Watch” (NC-only fire service show)Quote-Worthy Moments“I hate that little red dot with the number in it.”“ICS can expand and retract… and that's the beauty of it.”“Inspect what you expect.”“If you allow agencies to respond who won't do ICS… you're assuming liability.”Call To Action
The Dallas Stars fall 4–3 in overtime to the Montreal Canadiens, but the score doesn't tell the full story. In this episode of Starcastic Remarks, Ryan unloads—clearly and deliberately—on a Stars team that continues to struggle with defensive awareness, discipline, urgency, and overall compete level. The mistakes weren't isolated. They were repeated. And they were avoidable. From blown coverages to careless penalties, this loss followed the exact same pattern as the last several games. Even strong individual performances couldn't overcome a team that looks mentally disengaged for long stretches. This wasn't a collapse. It wasn't a slow bleed. It was a team choosing not to play connected hockey. If this stretch is driving you insane, you're not alone—and you're not wrong. Welcome to the first episode of 2026! In this episode, Paul Andrews kicks off "Jamming Month" with practical advice on why most guitar jams—whether solo or group—tend to stall or feel unmusical, and how you can overcome those hurdles to make your playing more creative and enjoyable.Key Topics Discussed1. Jamming DefinedJamming isn't just about playing with other people. It can be solo, using backing tracks or drum loops, and is accessible to beginners.2. Practice-a-Thon and Charity NewsJanuary's Practice-a-Thon: Practice throughout January to launch your year on a strong note.Optional charity element supporting Jesse's Fund, helping children with complex needs. Why Guitar Jams Go NowhereThe core issue: Random ideas with no intent or commitment. Most jams falter not from lack of skill, but lack of focus.5. Noodling vs. JammingNoodling: Playing without intent, changing ideas constantly.Jamming: Committing to ideas, responding to what you hear, and developing musical phrases.6. The Power of ConstraintsMusic flourishes with fewer ideas, not more.Use constraints (like limiting yourself to three notes or repeating a phrase for 30 seconds) to foster creativity and musicality.7. Practice ChallengeTry the "two-note improvising" challenge found in the community section of Beginner Guitar Academy.8. Action Steps for ListenersIf you can play a few chords or notes, you're ready to jam! Jamming is a skill developed by doing. For your next solo or group jam, pick one idea and stick with it longer than feels comfortable—this forces creativity and deeper musical exploration.9. You're listening to American Ground Radio with Stephen Parr and Louis R. Avallone. This is the full show for December 29, 2025. 0:30 The Trump administration is making it clear that nothing is off the table — including student loans. After years of COVID-era pauses and repeated promises of mass loan forgiveness under Democrats, the Department of Education is restarting enforcement in a big way. Beginning January 7, 2026, borrowers who have been in default for at least 270 days will start receiving wage-garnishment notices, with up to 15% of their pay withheld after a mandatory 30-day warning period. This move is about restoring accountability after Washington trained millions of borrowers to believe student loans would never have to be repaid. Federal control of student lending exploded college costs, trapped borrowers in debt they can’t discharge through bankruptcy, and unfairly shifted the burden onto taxpayers — especially working-class Americans who paid their loans responsibly, chose cheaper schools, or skipped college entirely. Critics warn it could anger some young voters, but others see it as long-overdue fairness: if you borrowed the money, you repay it. The larger message is unmistakable — consequences are back, and the federal government may finally be stepping out of the student loan business altogether. 9:30 Plus, we cover the Top 3 Things You Need to Know. The US struck a Venezuelan port over the weekend. The department of Justice says the suspect in the attempted bombings of both the Republican and Democratic National Headquarters in Washington D.C. on January 5th, 2021 has confessed. California has dropped its lawsuit against the Trump Administration for pulling funding from it's high speed train project. 12:30 Get Performlyte from Victory Nutrition International for 20% off. Go to vni.life/agr and use the promo code AGR20. 13:00 An independent journalist’s reporting is putting a harsh spotlight on staggering incompetence and massive fraud inside Minnesota’s daycare subsidy system. YouTuber Nick Shirley released video showing dozens of state-funded daycare centers, primarily in Minneapolis’ Somali community, that are allegedly being paid to care for large numbers of children, in some cases as many as 95 per location, despite no children being visible on site. If accurate, the scale of the alleged fraud could total hundreds of millions of dollars. While some aspects of Shirley’s approach have drawn criticism for being overly sensational, the core reporting raises serious questions the state has yet to answer. Locked doors, blacked-out windows, and empty facilities don’t automatically prove wrongdoing, but the absence of clear evidence that these centers are operating as claimed is alarming. Compounding the issue is Governor Tim Walz’s shifting response — initially dismissing calls for scrutiny as racist, only for his office later to claim the state has been investigating the issue for years. The contradiction fuels concerns that political defensiveness, rather than transparency, has defined Minnesota’s handling of the situation. 16:00 American Mamas Teri Netterville and Kimberly Burleson tackle a timeless and uncomfortable question: do people ever really grow out of being bullies? Drawing from personal experience, the Mamas reflect on how bullying doesn’t always disappear with age — it often just changes form. From middle school hallways to college campuses and even retirement communities, the same cliques, cruelty, and power plays can resurface decades later. The conversation explores the difference between “mean girls” and true bullying, and how time and perspective can turn anger into compassion — especially for those who do the work to grow and evolve. If you'd like to ask our American Mamas a question, go to our website, AmericanGroundRadio.com/mamas and click on the Ask the Mamas button. 23:00 Newly declassified documents confirm what many suspected about the 2022 FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago: even the FBI did not believe it had probable cause, but moved forward anyway under intense pressure from the Biden Justice Department. Agents raised concerns about the legality and optics of the raid, yet those objections were dismissed in a single-minded effort to “get Trump,” regardless of constitutional limits or institutional damage. 26:30 We Dig Deep into new data that challenges a long-standing talking point on the left about illegal immigrant crime. According to a New York Post column by Dr. John Lott Jr., Department of Homeland Security data shows that illegal immigrants make up roughly 14 percent of those incarcerated in New York—despite representing only a small fraction of the state’s population. That translates to conviction rates nearly three times higher than those of native New Yorkers, including serious violent and sexual offenses. Lax border enforcement sends a dangerous message that the law is optional—starting at the border and spreading everywhere else. Sanctuary policies shield criminals from ICE, driving up crime and forcing taxpayers to absorb massive costs for incarceration, healthcare, and welfare support. 32:00 Get Prodovite Plus from Victory Nutrition International for 20% off. Go to vni.life/agr and use the promo code AGR20. 32:30 Activist groups are calling on AT&T to cut ties with federal agencies like DHS, ICE, and Customs and Border Protection, as if enforcing immigration law is a moral crime. These pressure campaigns have real-world consequences. AT&T has worked with the federal government for decades and severing those contracts would likely cost American jobs with no effect on immigration enforcement itself. 36:00 New research links the decline of religious participation in the United States to a rise in what researchers call “deaths of despair,” including suicides, drug overdoses, and alcohol-related disease. According to a study published in the Journal of the European Economic Association, these troubling mortality trends began increasing in the early 1990s, following a measurable drop in faith and religious engagement. Practices tied to religion—such as prayer, meditation, moral reflection, and community worship—help strengthen emotional regulation, resilience, and a sense of meaning. When those practices fade, they are often replaced by substitutes that offer stimulation without purpose, distraction without fulfillment, or treatment without addressing the deeper spiritual void. Faith is more than preparation for the next life. It is a source of comfort, connection, and stability in this one, and that's a Bright Spot. 39:30 We break down Nancy Pelosi’s decision to tear up President Trump’s State of the Union address. The act was not merely a political jab at Trump, but a direct insult to the institution of the presidency, Congress, and the American people. 41:30 And we finish off with a record-breaking kiss under the mistletoe that will make you say, "Whoa!" What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood | Parenting Tips From Funny Moms
For the holidays, we're re-running some of our very favorite holiday-themed episodes! It's hard not to feel like we've got to be doing ALL the things at the holidays, especially when social media tells us we should be. Here are some tips for taking perspective at the holidays and operating in "high magic, low effort" mode. We discuss: pre-gaming with your (older) kids about the preferred responses to less-preferred gifts starting with what family members really do love most about the holidays (their answers will surprise you) why you don't have to go the Nutcracker, or lights at the zoo, or Aunt Martha's house, this year, let alone every year Rosie Colosi for Today Parents: Moms are challenging the idea that they are the sole keepers of holiday ‘magic' SNL's "Christmas Morning" sketch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOVCtUdaMCU Read all of our listeners' great advice on the original Facebook thread... and here, as promised, is Amy's recipe for the Italian pepper cookies that seem to be unique to northeast Pennsylvania... Italian Pepper Cookies (makes about 72 cookies, more if they're small) 1/2 cup Crisco 2 cups of milk or water (or more if needed) If dough is really sticky you can add a little bit more of milk 1/2 lb. raisins 1 cup cocoa 2 1/2 cups sugar 4 tbsp. baking powder 7 cups of flour (add more if needed) 1 1/2 tsps. cinnamon 1 1/2 tsps. cloves (not whole) 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla 1 1/2 tsps. black pepper (if you don't want them too spicy, you can cut back on the pepper, I never do though) Optional, you can add nuts or I've seen people add chocolate chips too. We aren't big nut eaters, so I've never made them with nuts. Preheat oven to 375 Cream sugar and Crisco together in a bowl In a different bowl, sift together all the dry ingredients. Add sifted dry ingredients to creamed sugar and Crisco alternately with milk. Mix well. It will be very sticky, it's easier to work with your hands. I usually coat my hands with some Pam to be able to work the dough. Add your raisins and mix it up more. Using your hands, take enough dough to roll a small ball (my mom likes them big, I like them smaller) Place cookie balls on your cookie trays (I usually fit around 16 on a tray, all depends on the size of your cookie balls) Bake in oven for 8-10 minutes. Icing: 2 cups confectioner's sugar 1 to 2 tablespoons milk 1/2 teaspoon butter splash vanilla For icing: Mix together all ingredients, adding milk until achieving creamy consistency, not stiff. When cookies are slightly cooled, top with icing. Sign up for the What Fresh Hell newsletter! Send us a textSlow seasons happen in every industry, and the salon industry is no exception. But while slow periods are predictable, panic is optional. In this episode, we talk about why seasonal slowdowns shouldn't feel shocking, why reacting emotionally makes things worse, and how both salon owners and stylists can prepare ahead of time instead of scrambling at the last minute. We break down the difference between panic and passivity, why discounting usually backfires, and how to build systems that keep your business steady year after year.We also share practical ways to use slow seasons productively: tightening systems, improving consultations, planning financially, strengthening client relationships, and maintaining strong team morale. In this episode of the REB Podcast, deputy editor Emilie Lauer sits down with the Rise Initiative's Kylie Davis to unpack why wellbeing has become one of the industry's most urgent issues – and why agents can't afford to ignore it heading into 2026. Davis explains why wellbeing shouldn't feel like just another item on an already overwhelming to-do list, arguing instead for small, sustainable habits that help agents manage stress before it escalates into burnout. Drawing on her own experiences, Davis highlights the emotional toll property transactions can have on buyers and sellers, and why agents often find themselves acting as "first responders" to clients in crisis. The conversation explores how agents can support highly stressed buyers and sellers without absorbing that pressure themselves, why switching off over the holiday period is so difficult in a commission-based industry, and how a gradual wind-down can make all the difference. Davis also challenges agencies and networks to move beyond outdated "harden up" mentalities, outlining their legal and moral responsibility to actively support staff wellbeing. Looking ahead, she discusses the role technology and artificial intelligence (AI) could play in identifying stress patterns early – while warning that human connection remains irreplaceable. You have to forgive people who wrong you…right? The world is filled with injustice and wrongdoing, and to live in the world — to not be consumed by anger — forgiveness is necessary. At least that's what we're told over and over again: By forgiving, we can set ourselves free. But is there a cost to forgiveness? Are we forgiving too quickly and too often? Today's guest is philosopher Myisha Cherry, whose book Failures of Forgiveness critiques our cultural obsession with forgiving those who have done us wrong. She's not against forgiveness — that would be weird — but she says we ought to be more intentional about why we do it, more aware that the expectation to practice forgiveness often lands on the most vulnerable people, and more concerned about what gets lost when we treat forgiveness as the only path to healing. Sean and Myisha discuss the 2015 Charleston church shooting, the legacy of slavery, and the real difference between accountability, reconciliation, and simply moving on. Host: Sean Illing (@SeanIlling) Guest: Myisha Cherry (@myishacherry), associate professor of philosophy at the University of California Riverside, and author of Failures of Forgiveness: What We Get Wrong and How to Do Better. The Hidden Lightness with Jimmy Hinton – The catalyst for this discussion is Elon Musk's recent claim: within the next 10 to 20 years, advancements in artificial intelligence will render many human jobs obsolete, making work fundamentally optional for Americans. This prediction forces a critical, immediate question upon our capitalist society: if AI and robotics take over the bulk of wealth generation...

In this episode, AJ and Chris dig into a playful but insightful exploration: What would happen if an outsider spent a weekend in Bellingham guided solely by web searches or AI?Fresh off a Portland conference with heavy AI themes, AJ tests what “SmackGPT” thinks a weekend in Bellingham should look like across five traveler personas: the Local Explorer, Family Adventurer, Mindful Explorer, Camper, and Lux High Roller (exact output posted below). The gents review, refine, and sometimes hilariously correct the AI-generated recommendations, offering their hyper-local expertise on food, lodging, hikes, coffee shops, costs, and hidden gems. Along the way, Amtrak stories, camping advice, critiques of $10 gas estimates, and an update on the infamous “mics on sticks” recording setup. It's a mix of travel guide, tech commentary, and classic Bellingham banter all better than any bot.
Send us a textIn this Thanksgiving special of It's Hertime, Cody Sanders explores one of the most powerful — yet underestimated — tools for women's health and emotional well-being: gratitude. Gratitude is more than a mindset shift; it's a proven wellness practice that supports hormonal balance, reduces stress hormones, improves nervous system regulation, and helps women feel grounded during busy or overwhelming seasons of life.Cody shares personal reflections from her own journey — from the hormonal struggles that inspired her to create Mixhers Hertime over a decade ago, to the six-year rollercoaster of building Mixhers into a women's wellness brand with heart, purpose, and impact. Through every challenge, gratitude became the anchor that helped her navigate stress, entrepreneurship, perimenopause, healing, and big life transitions. In this warm, reflective episode, you'll learn:•How gratitude directly influences hormone health, including cortisol, serotonin, and oxytocin•Why gratitude acts like “medicine” for women experiencing burnout, stress, overwhelm, or midlife hormonal shifts•Simple gratitude rituals that support emotional regulation and balanced hormones•How gratitude strengthens resilience during life's unpredictable seasons•A powerful guided gratitude meditation to help you feel abundant, centered, and supported•Why gratitude is one of the most accessible wellness tools for women in perimenopause, menopause, postpartum, and beyondThis episode is a soul-soothing blend of science, spirituality, and real-life wisdom — the perfect way to ground yourself during the holidays or anytime life feels heavy.⸻

Plan sponsors have a lot to do – and a lot to do withhelping Americans prepare for retirement – and a lot of things that help them do so. In this episode, Nevin (Adams) and Fred (Reish) share their lists of things plan sponsors should be thankful for this holiday. There's obviously a LOT to be thankful for, not the least ofwhich is that plan sponsors are often doing what they do for retirement planning in the midst of an array of other pressing concerns. That said, there have been any number of innovations andevolutions over the years – and as we come to that time of the year when we're inclined to give thanks – well, here are our lists:- The 401(k) - how was America going to retire without it?- ERISA 404(c) -participant directed investments safe harbor (without it, plan fiduciaries are responsible for ALL participant investment decisions (even the dumb ones) - EGTRRA (Economic Growth Tax Relief and Recovery Act of 2001) - which, among other things, lifted the harsh contribution limits of TRA86, gave us Roth option.- Target-date funds – making it easier for participants to benefit from professional money management. - PPA (Pension Protection Act of 2006) – which “sanctioned” (via safe harbors) automatic enrollment and qualified default investment alternatives (QDIA) – including the afore-mentioned target-date funds. Created FLOORS, not ceilings for retirement savings.- Index funds – helping provide a cost-effective investment structure, first via various share classes, and now via collective investment trusts. - SECURE 2.0 (the SECURE 2.0 Act of 2022) – which provided 90+ OPTIONS for improved retirement savings that plan sponsors can choose from (or not). Lots of options in SECURE 2.0 that are OPTIONAL.- The plaintiffs' bar – well, some of them anyway.- ERISA's preemption provision – one set of federal laws that trump various state rules and regulations, and give us a single set of (admittedly complex) federal rules. And one more – but you'll have to listen to find out!Happy Thanksgiving!- Nevin E. Adams, JD

Hear about travel to Kosrae and Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia as the Amateur Traveler talks to Lexie Brown from @lexienicolebrown on Instagram about her explorations of this remote island country. This week's show is supported by the new Smart Travel Podcast. Travel smarter — and spend less — with help from NerdWallet. Check out Smart Travel here. Why should you go to the Federated States of Micronesia? Lexie says, "It is a place that's so unique, and, I think, unmatched when it comes to experiencing ancient Micronesian culture. And what's interesting about the FSM is that there are four states, and each of those states is made up of either one island or over a hundred islands, split up in a lagoon. So it's very diverse and even because each state is so far apart, they have their own language and their own culture." Lexie recommends an itinerary that focuses on Kosrae and Pohnpei, two of the four states that make up the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) Suggested Itinerary Overview Duration: About one weekRoute: Start in Kosrae for nature, hiking, and ancient ruins Continue to Pohnpei for waterfalls, diving, and the famous Nan Madol ruins (Optional extensions: Yap for traditional culture during Yap Week in March, and Chuuk for advanced wreck diving in Truk Lagoon) ... https://amateurtraveler.com/travel-to-the-federated-states-of-micronesia/ Learn more about your ad choices.
