This week we learn about H.H. Hinder Brewing with guests Mike Stroik, Ken Lambert and David Oldenburg. Mike brings the ownership perspective and the vision behind building H.H. HINDER into a destination brewery and community gathering place. Ken helps shape the brewery's identity through branding, events, marketing, and customer engagement. David brings decades of brewing experience, award-winning beers, national judging credentials, and a passion for brewing both classic and modern beer styles. Discover how H.H. HINDER got started, how the brewery has evolved, the challenges of operating a brewery in today's craft beer environment, and how all three of these roles work together to create the H.H. HINDER experience. And we taste two beers from the brewery..a red rye amber lager and a Grätzer smoked wheat beer. Now grab a beer and enjoy the show! Once again we deep dive into Martin's cellar and find out if he's kept gold or held on for too long. Brekeriet released King's Goblet back in 2020. It's a strong ale aged in Rioja wine barrels for 9 months. It was never a huge hit. It averages a 3.53 overall rating on Untappd. Hopefully it hasn't fallen off. Mikkeller Brewing San Diego closed in 2022. Valknut also came out in 2020. This imperial stout originally had coffee, vanilla, pecans and was aged in maple barrels. No walnuts were used in the making of this beer. We had it back in 2020 and gave it a 4.5 rating. How does it hold up 6 years later? #beer #craftbeer #drinks #goldenale #barrelaged #imperialstout

Care of @scotchfullyyours, Dan explores a French-style lager from West Kill Brewing: Fur-Bearing Trout, brewed with French ingredients. West Kill Brewing Fur-Bearing Trout STYLE: French-Style LagerINGREDIENTS: French Pilsner malt; French Strisselspalt hops; Lagered in Toasted French Oak.ABV: 5.0%IBU: N/AAVAILABILITY: 16 oz cans/draft (Limited)Stats above taken from the can/website/Untappd. Appearance A little chill haze out of the fridge, though boasting a gold-like yellow with a white, foamy head. Aroma Graininess meets a floral hop element. Taste Clean, with a bit of sweetness from the malt, with the floral hop profile continuing into a slate-like minerality. Mouthfeel Refreshing, mostly dry, and crisp, with foamy carbonation and light body. Overall I feel the world of pilsner is spreading out from the OGs of Czech and German, as we have seen Italian and West Coast come up as well. Because of the refreshing element, I definitely wouldn’t mind seeing some more of these on the market. Pairing-wise, I would go lighter with pairings due to the floral and other subtle elements; was feeling Loire-based aged goat cheese (Selles-sur-Cher and the like), a light and rustic sandwich or flatbread would be lovely with scallions or shallots. Thanks again to @scotchfullyyours AKA Doug Zeigler (Speakeasy Conversations, Mortal Content, The Cult Bar) for sharing! Cheers and remember: Life’s a tap…drink up ’til it’s dry. Barry, Abigail, and special guest Nick Martino discuss Ozomatli by Ozomatli and sample Sole of the Sea (collaboration with Rockport Brewing Company in Rockport, Massachusetts), Drip, and girl, so confusing from Lost Shoe Brewing and Roasting Company in Marlborough, Massachusetts.Nick is now a four-timer, having previously appeared on our second Christmas bonus episode, Bonus: A Christmas Day's Eve! Original Songs by Our Friends, and both of our live episodes: Bonus: LIVE from Stand Up! Pod Jam 2024: Pops on Hops Friend Exchange (New York Funk Exchange and Able Baker Brewing) and Bonus: LIVE from Stand Up! Pod Jam 2025: Neon Desert Challenge (the latter of which he also produced for us!). Give his previous appearances some love; they are a lot of fun!Nick, in part, chose to assign us this album because of Abigail's beef with He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince as displayed in Jukebox: He's the Drinker, We're the Talkers (DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince and Evil Genius Beer Company). Coincidentally, this album reminded Abigail of a different Derek Hummel, Sr., Jukebox selection, Make Yourself by Incubus, as discussed in Jukebox: Make Your Flight (Incubus and Hell 'n Blazes Brewing Co.).Both DJ Cut Chemist and MC Chali 2na left Ozomatli after this album because their other group, Jurassic 5, was blowing up.We found a great blog with additional information about and clips of Nick's favorite “trumpet battle” between Wynton Marsalis and Trombone Shorty at the House of Blues in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 2009. Evidently, trumpet battles have been going on for over 100 years!Watch Chali 2na and New Orleans-based jazz band Naughty Professor perform Cut Chemist Suite live at the Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 2018!Oh look, more self-promotion! O Le Le names Edie Brickell, whom we have previously reviewed (see Using Honeybees for the Meads [Edie Brickell & New Bohemians and B. Nektar]). We could think of at least one other time an artist we reviewed explicitly names an artist we'd previously reviewed: Crash Test Dummies (see Pops Shuffled His Flight [Crash Test Dummies and Toll Road Brewing Company]) names David Bryne (see Byrned-Again [David Byrne and Lincoln & South Brewing Company]) in When I Go Out with Artists. These two latter albums are both among Abigail's top five favorite albums we've ever reviewed, as revealed in our Pops on Hops Hot 100 Special!Super Bowl Sundae contains a sample that sounds very similar to a sample previously discussed on the podcast: Hip Hop Dancer's Theme by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince samples Peter Piper by Run-D.M.C., which sampled Take Me to the Mardi Gras by Bob James.Abigail plugged The Manifesto (feat. Trueno and Proof) off of Gorillaz' recently released The Mountain, a song featuring both Indian influence and a Spanish-language rapper!girl, so confusing was brewed with the 2026 Pink Boots hop blend from Yakima Chief Hops. Sales of this hop blend benefit the Pink Boots Society, which supports women and non-binary individuals in the fermented and alcoholic beverage industry!Up next… I've Got My Own Album to Do by Ronnie WoodJingles are by our friend Pete Coe.Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition.Follow Barry or Abigail on Untappd to see what we're drinking when we're not on mic!Leave us a rating or a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify!Facebook | Instagram | Bluesky | YouTube | Substack | Website | Email us | Virtual Jukebox | Beer Media Group
Care of @scotchfullyyours, Dan pops an internationally-inspired Dark Lager from Zeroday Brewing and starts dreaming about barbecue. Zeroday Brewing Company Dark Lager STYLE: Dark LagerABV: 5.3%IBU: 21AVAILABILITY: 16 oz cans/draft (Limited)Stats above taken from the can/website/Untappd. Appearance Dark brown with a half-inch, foamy, tan head. Aroma Deep, dark caramel/burnt sugar with toasted bread/Maillard reaction notes plus herbal hops. Taste Caramel notes continue along with the toasted bread. Mouthfeel Fairly light on the palate with a medium body, soft carbonation, and fairly dry finish. Overall This was trending more Tmave for me, but totally approachable. Pairing-wise, those Maillard-reaction notes lead me to barbecue, leading towards pulled chicken or pork with some sweet sauce. Care of @scotchfullyyours, Dan enjoyed a Skibsøl (“ship beer”), a light, smoked ale in the collaboration from West Kill, The Fountain. West Kill Brewing The Fountain STYLE: Historical Beer (Skibsøl)INGREDIENTS: Beechwood-smoked, rye, and chocolate maltABV: 3.8%IBU: N/AAVAILABILITY: 16 oz cans/draft (Limited)COLLABORATION: The Fountain, a novel by Casey ScieszkaStats above taken from the can/website/Untappd. Appearance Super dark brown with a fluffy, off-white head. Aroma Blend of ash and smoked meat, remeniscient of rauchbier. Taste Mixture of barbecued meat/Maillard reaction, ash, some spice, and some burning leaves on the retronasal. Mouthfeel Light on the palate, with a smooth carbonation and enveloping mouthfeel. Overall I really have developed a love of these lighter, smoked beer styles, and this (my first), will hopefully not be the last one of these “ship beers”. Pairing-wise, having this with jerky on a ship would make a lot of sense, though onshore, I would say smoked meat, hearty stews/soups, darker brats, and aged cheese. This week on The Beer Engine Podcast, Griff forgot to do the show notes. Not “running late.” Not “half-finished.” Forgot. Entirely. So instead of a polished episode description filled with timestamps, witty observations, and at least one legally questionable comparison to regional fast food chains, you get this hastily assembled emergency broadcast from the depths of Tony's notes app.Somewhere in this episode:Someone says “we'll cut that out” and absolutely nobody does.A beer gets reviewed with the confidence of a man reading the wrong Untappd entry.Griff attempts to explain himself.Tony slowly realises he's now hosting a podcast and writing the description in real time. The stinger is still too long.“News: The Game” continues to drift further from both news and games. At least one discussion could've been solved with a five second Google search.A completely normal topic somehow becomes a 20-minute debate. Also featured:Strong opinions delivered with almost no research.Accidental dead air.Someone talking over the intro music.A callback to a joke nobody remembers.Audio levels that were definitely checked beforehand. Taste Guava, followed by some of the other tropical notes from the aroma. Mouthfeel Fairly dry, medium body, with soft carbonation and mouthfeel. Overall Super interesting and tropical-forward for sure. Pairing-wise, I was feeling ceviche would go great as well as fish tacos, poke, or anything to embrace those flavors. Proost!

Care of @scotchfullyyours, Dan unmasks KCBC Devil You Know, an American IPA hopped with Centennial, Nelson Sauvin, and Chinook. Appearance Beautifully clear, medium yellow in color, with a frothy and foamy white head. Aroma Grapefruit juice/peel hit first, with muted pineapple, and a little white grape. Taste Similar notes to the aroma, with pine and resin mixing in with pineapple juice in the mid-palate and some lemon/lime notes towards the end and finish. Mouthfeel Dry, keeping you coming back for another sip, with zippy carbonation and medium mouthfeel. Overall As of the time of the recording, Daredevil:Born Again is airing, and this is sort of a tie-in to it. Pairing-wise, you can go a lot of different ways with it, but I was feeling Thai chili wings or something with a bit of spice to hold up against the hops notes. One of a few from West Kill Brewing care of @scotchfullyyours, Dan samples Gone Afield, a wheat beer with orange, chamomile, and coriander. West Kill Brewing Gone Afield STYLE: Wheat Beer/Witbier/BlancheINGREDIENTS: Coriander, orange, and chamomileABV: 5.2%IBU: N/AAVAILABILITY: 16 oz cans/draft (Limited)Stats above taken from the can/website/Untappd. Appearance Hazy, medium gold/yellow with a white, fluffy head. Aroma Orange hit first, followed by the floral notes from the chamomile before the coriander/spice element lands, with an impression of malt sweetness. Taste Sweet bread/honey bread meets the orange and coriander notes with a subtle floral element. Mouthfeel Refreshing, light and slightly off-dry, with soft, foamy carbonation. Overall It’s great to see wheat beers out and about. Not typically my favorite style, but when they’re well-executed, they are still pretty delightful. Pairing-wise, I would definitely go lighter on flavors, maybe goat or lightly flavored cheeses, flatbreads, or something fresh that can complement the orange, chamomile, and coriander notes. Care of @scotchfullyyours, Dan opened a Crooked Mouth Brewing Melisandre, an Irish Red Ale, which you don’t see often. Crooked Mouth Brewing Melisandre STYLE: Irish Red AleABV: 5.0%IBU: 26AVAILABILITY: 16 oz cans/draftStats above taken from the can/website/Untappd. Appearance Lightly-tinged copper and reddish in hue with a slightly off-white head. Aroma Sweet caramel malt meets the earthy/spicy/floral hop notes. Taste The earthy hop notes hit first, with the sweet malt and caramel element following on the mid-palate. Mouthfeel Smooth carbonation, light, refreshing, and moderately dry. Overall I don’t see Irish Reds around much, but they are flavorful and food-friendly when you might not have other distinct styles you are craving. Pairing-wise, I think general pub fare would be great from wings to Southwest Egg Rolls. Barry, Abigail, and special guest Kim Nyborg discuss Fruitcakes by Jimmy Buffett and sample Sour Lemon Lime, Sour Cranberry, and Sour Cherry Pineapple from Edmund's Oast Brewing Co. in Charleston, South Carolina.Barry and Kim both have key memories involving Why Don't We Get Drunk; it was the song that really made Barry understand the extent of Buffett's influence in Florida, and it was the first song Kim ever remembers singing!Abigail's first memories of Jimmy Buffett were of The Parakeet Album - Songs of Jimmy Buffett, a collection of family-friendly Buffett songs sung by students at the W.O. Smith Music School in Nashville, Tennessee.Abigail shouted out the backup singers in Jimmy's Coral Reefer Band, known as the Reeferettes. Although Nicolette Larson was never an official member of the Coral Reefer Band, she appeared on three Buffett albums (including Fruitcakes!) and is considered an honorary Coral Reefer. We played a snippet of her most famous song, Lotta Love. We've previously spoken about Nicolette Larson in the context of her guest appearance in The Creature From the Tub from Andrew Gold's Halloween Howls: Fun and Scary Music; in fact, she and Gold were briefly engaged in the early 1980s, over a decade before the release of Halloween Howls! Listen to our review of Halloween Howls, Halloween Hops (Andrew Gold and Aardwolf Brewing).Harpoon Brewery in Boston, Massachusetts, seems to have done the most collaborating with Dunkin' Donuts over the years. However, Abigail's claim of donut-chain-branded lube has been debunked by Snopes.Buffett covered The Kinks' Sunny Afternoon, which shares with Taxman by The Beatles and Exile on Main St. by The Rolling Stones a common theme in 60s and 70s British rock: the exorbitant taxes musicians faced in the UK, leading many to become “tax exiles.”Buffett covered She's Got You, originally written (as He's Got You) by Hank Cochran and made famous by Patsy Cline. Abigail had the pleasure of joining our friend and frequent guest Matt Carlson on the podcast portion of his project, What Am I Making, back on August 10, 2025.Now 14-timer Matt is the undisputed king of the Pops on Hops multiple guest club. He is a talented musician and songwriter from East Lansing, Michigan, whom Barry met as part of an online community created by Pete Dominick, the host of the Stand Up With Pete Dominick podcast. During one of their weekly hangouts, Matt shared the name of his latest band, Harborcoat. Barry caught the R.E.M. connection, which led to a Pops on Hops episode to discuss the album Joy is Elusive. The outtakes alone from that conversation also led to a POH bonus episode to discuss Matt's top five R.E.M. albums. Matt has contributed songs to our Christmas bonus episodes in both 2021 and 2022, and he served as the beertender for our first live episode. Most recently, Matt and longtime collaborator Jeff Gower appeared on POH to talk about their 2018 album Ways to Hang On.So, obviously, when Matt asked Abigail to participate in Six Questions with Matty C, she jumped at the chance! Learn about taps and tools that make beer taste different than it tastes at home, from cask conditioning to Czech side-pour faucets.Roaring Table Brewing Co-Owner and Head Brewer Lane Fearing discusses why Roaring Table is known for “doing things the hard way,” from building a brewery on a shoestring budget to the reality of hand-cleaning an electric kettle. He breaks down why cask beer tastes different, including the impact of cellar temperature (~50°F) and lower carbonation on aroma and drinkability, and goes full beer-nerd on service tools that change mouthfeel and foam: first, the Czech LUKR faucet (wet foam + “milk pour”), and second, a two-spout Japanese sharp-pour faucet designed to trap CO₂ under a tight cap of foam. After the beer break, Lane discusses the German Stichfass (the celebratory gravity keg you hammer-tap), why Roaring Table's new kitchen “pie” program is such a big deal, and the surprisingly sessionable side of “dark beer.” He shares his Munich Dunkel with Brian and Cody before moving on to a New Zealand Pilsner and a discussion of what makes NZ hops taste different than American hops. Episode 20 of Matt Likes Beer finds Matt deep into Dry January 2026, reflecting on health goals, pre-recorded episodes, and the realities of balancing beer enthusiasm with personal wellness. The beer in the spotlight is Dollar Slice, a hazy IPA from Other Half Brewing in Brooklyn, New York—chosen initially for its pizza-inspired label and unexpected name. Matt shares his prior experience with Other Half, noting that while he's enjoyed their IPAs before, this particular beer was a classic case of label buying—a marketing reality many craft beer fans know well. A deeper look into the brewery's catalog reveals a diverse lineup beyond IPAs, including lagers, sours, and spontaneous fermentation beers, even though hop-forward styles clearly dominate their production. During the tasting, Matt addresses an important judging dilemma: while the can simply says “India Pale Ale,” further research—and the beer's unmistakable appearance—confirm it should be evaluated as a 21C Hazy IPA. Using BJCP guidelines, he breaks down the beer's opaque yellow appearance, exceptional head retention, intense citrus and tropical fruit aroma, and luxuriously soft, creamy mouthfeel. Flavor-wise, Dollar Slice delivers vibrant orange zest, pineapple, and juice-forward hop character from Citra and Galaxy hops, earning high marks across the board. A slight lingering off-flavor prevents a near-perfect score, but the beer still lands at an impressive 41 out of 50, firmly in the Excellent range. Matt emphasizes that without this minor issue—possibly isolated to the can or palate—this could easily have been a mid-40s standout. With no one-star reviews to read, the episode closes on a thoughtful soapbox moment about Untappd, consumer-driven beer trends, and the disconnect that can occur when breweries resist making the styles people actually want to drink. Matt balances critique with humility, acknowledging the complexity of running a brewery while reaffirming his belief that variety, responsiveness, and drinker feedback matter.
