In the summer of 1978, a strange series of events began to unfold for rural residents of northeastern Ohio. While enjoying a quiet evening at their rural home near Minerva, the Cayton family and their grandchildren witnessed a large, hairy, bipedal creature peering through their kitchen window. This creature, described as standing over 7 feet tall with glowing red eyes, sparked fear and curiosity, prompting the family to report their sightings to local authorities. Following the Cayton family's report, the Minerva area became a hotbed of Bigfoot research and investigation. Numerous additional sightings were reported in the surrounding woods and hills, with various tracks and other physical evidence purportedly found. However, that isn't all that this "classic" case appears to have entailed, as a deeper look into the story reveals sightings of mysterious large cats alongside "gorillas" in Ohio's history, as well as alleged connections to UFO sightings made by some area residents, and much more. In this special installment of Sasquatch Tracks, the team takes a deep dive into the story of the Minverva Monsters, which we affectionately refer to in the plural since, according to eyewitness reports, there appeared to be more than one of the creatures observed by the Caytons... but what were they, and what can we uncover about the case after all these years? Back in 1978, there were multiple reports of a tall, hairy, 300-pound creature that was seen in a heavily wooded area about 2 miles from Minerva, OH over a period of a few weeks. One hot summer night in August of 1978, the Cayton family was sitting at the kitchen table when they heard a noise in the back yard & their dog started barking. They glanced out the window & that was when they saw something near the woods - a 6-foot-tall hairy creature! A few nights later they saw it again, but this time it was seen peering into their kitchen from the window! What they saw was a 300 hairy creature with black & brown matted hair on its head & body. It was seen several times by them as well as by other members of the community in the area, either near a strip mine, crossing a road, or even sitting on a chicken coop. It was even seen protecting two smaller creatures in one run in. Once the news began reporting the encounters, the Dayton family's home became an ground zero for Bigfoot enthusiasts & hunters. It got so bad, the family had to put up a fence to keep onlookers out. The family received a lot of backlash, & taunting from the rest of the town, & it was believed that they were just pulling a hoax for publicity. But the Caytons stuck to their story and never wavered. What was seen by the Dayton family in August of 1978? What if you heard someone pelting your house with rocks, then investigated to find yourself face to face with a large hairy beast on two legs. In 1978, the Cayton family and several others living in and around Minerva reported seeing a manlike creature they couldn't identify lurking in the woods, something that has come to be known simply as "the Minerva Monster." Akron Beacon Journal reporter Barb Galloway was the first journalist to document their stories, which - as it turned out - went back a generation. She accompanied local sheriff deputies as they found what appeared to be bedding pressed into tall grass, a tuft of fur snagged on a thorny bush, scratch marks on wood, and the strong odor of ammonia. Hear what Galloway has to say about that unnerving summer. www.ohiomysteries.com feedback@ohiomysteries.com www.patreon.com/ohiomysteries www.twitter.com/mysteriesohio www.facebook.com/ohiomysteries Learn more about your ad choices.
