In this final message of our series on identity, we return to the pivotal moment in Moses' life—the encounter at the burning bush. Throughout this series, we've traced a recurring pattern in Moses' story: a deep identity longing, an attempted solution that fails, an encounter with God, and a newly formed identity rooted not in self-definition but in God's self-revelation. Today, we slow down at the turning point of that pattern. As God names himself, calls Moses by name, and sends him into God's larger story, we're invited to reconsider how identity is formed—not as a solitary monologue, but through dialogue with God and within community. Together, we ask the question Moses asks, “Who am I?”, and discover how that question is finally answered in encounter with the God who says, “I will be with you.” Recorded December 21, 2025.
In this sermon, we continue our series on Moses and the question of identity, focusing on one of the most relatable moments in his story—failure, exile, and deep disappointment. Moses longs for the same things we do: belonging, purpose, justice, blessing, and a life that matters, yet every attempt he makes to secure those things falls apart, yet, it's in that place of discouragement and “not enoughness” that God meets him at the burning bush, revealing himself as a God of grace who moves toward failure, promises his presence, and still calls broken people to participate in his work. This sermon explores what changed Moses, and what his encounter with God might teach us about moving from fear and disillusionment toward faith. Recorded December 14, 2025.

In this message, we continue our exploration of the theme of justice: two weeks ago, we considered justice through the courage of the women in Exodus 1–2; today, we shift to Moses' adult life and the tension between his deep, God-given passion for justice and the misguided, self-driven ways he first tries to pursue it. This passage leads us to a bigger question: how does an encounter with God transform our approach to injustice—from personal mission to divine calling? Join us as we look at Exodus 2 and 3 and discover what it means to join God's work of true liberation in the world. Recorded December 7, 2025.

As the book of Exodus opens, the Israelites find themselves in a predicament in Egypt. Once seen as a blessing by the Egyptian people and Pharoah, they are now feared as a blight, because their small group of immigrants has mushroomed into a nation which outnumbers the Egyptians themselves. As a result, a new Pharoah makes a ruling that all male babies born to Hebrew women should be drowned in the Nile. But Pharoah did not know that the two midwives who oversaw those childbirths had other ideas!

We notice that in this text, God responds to the cry of the Israelites by first saying, “I've come down to rescue the people from Egypt” but then saying, “So you get going. I'm sending you to Pharaoh.” The way God works in the world, it seems, is through people like Moses, who pay attention to the things that are on fire in the world and don't ignore them or run away from them. But even Moses, one of the heroes of Scripture, is at first afraid to do what God asks of him, begging God to send someone else. Yet it turns out that this God of ours is an equipping God, who gives Moses what is needed for the task ahead of him, a staff, a partner, and even the divine name. “I am who I am,” says God. “I will be who I will be.” So who is God calling us toward today, we wonder, and how is God equipping us f the task ahead?
This Sunday, Pastor Blake reflected on a turning point in Israel's story: their cry for help in the midst of deep suffering. As the Israelites groaned under oppression, God heard, remembered His covenant, and saw their pain. These verses remind us that even when God feels silent, He is not absent. He hears, He remembers, and He is already moving toward redemption. Want to watch a version of this message? Check out our live broadcast archive at www.declarationchurch.net/live.
“Though there be no light for us, but in the beams, yet we may by the beams, see the sun, which is the fountain of it. Though all our refreshment actually lies in the streams, yet by them, we are lead up onto the fountain. Jesus Christ, in respect of the love of the Father, is but the beam, the stream; where in, though actually all our light, our refreshment lies. Yet by him we are led to the fountain, the sum of eternal love itself. Would believers exercise themselves here in, they would find it a matter of no small spiritual improvement in their walking with God.”—John Owen, Communion with God Exodus 2:1-10

In today's Faith Friday edition of Morning Manna, we turn to the remarkable story of Jochebed, the mother of Moses. Facing an impossible command from Pharaoh, she chose faith over fear and placed her baby boy in a little ark upon the waters of the Nile. Her quiet trust in God's providence carried far more weight than the edicts of kings. This episode explores how Jochebed's “boat faith” models the courage to release what we cannot control into the hands of the Lord. We'll reflect on how faith is often expressed not in loud declarations, but in simple acts of obedience and surrender—acts that God uses to shape history. Teachers: Rick Wiles and Doc Burkhart.
