Make A Difference Minute: The Small Things Mean a Lot

On this Make A Difference Minute, I have Ashley Russell of Athens, Alabama, sharing how small acts of kindness have helped carry her through cancer treatments and chemotherapy. When people hear about a cancer diagnosis, they often wonder what they can do to help. Ashley's answer is simple: the little things matter. A surprise package in the mail filled with items to help during chemotherapy. A bag prepared by friends with snacks, blankets, fuzzy socks, and comfort items. Head wraps given with love after losing her hair. Help with her child when she needed support. None of these acts could take away the diagnosis, but each one reminded Ashley that she wasn't facing the journey alone. Sometimes encouragement doesn't have to be grand or expensive. A thoughtful gesture, a helping hand, or simply showing up can make a difficult day a little easier. On this Make a Difference Minute, I have John Ford Coley, one half of the legendary duo England Dan and John Ford Coley, as he reflects on the people who first encouraged his musical gifts. John shares how his parents recognized his love for music early on, providing piano lessons and nurturing the imagination of a young boy who would pretend the footrest in a barber chair was a piano keyboard. Those early influences helped shape a career that has now spanned decades and produced timeless hits including "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight" and "Nights Are Forever Without You." Today, John continues to perform across the country, sometimes with groups like Ambrosia and Three Dog Night and sometimes by himself, sharing songs, stories, and plenty of laughter along the way. He says his goal is simple. He wants people to come together, forget the controversies of the world for a while, and simply enjoy the music. More than 50 years after his biggest hits first reached the airwaves, John Ford Coley is still doing what he loves, bringing people together through the universal language of music. On this Make a Difference Minute, I have Robert Diamond, better known as Bobby the Balloon Guy with Balloon Masters Entertainment. I caught up with Bobby at the Sheffield Public Library during their Summer Reading Adventure, where he entertained children and families with his Zany Magical Balloon Show. While many people know him for the incredible balloon creations he makes, Bobby sees himself as something more. He calls himself an entertainer because, as he explains, anyone can learn to twist balloons, but creating joy and truly engaging an audience is something different. Inspired by fellow magician Jeff McBride, Bobby believes one of the greatest gifts a performer can give is helping people escape the worries of everyday life, even if it's only for a little while. For twenty minutes or an hour, bills, stress, and responsibilities can fade into the background as children and adults alike are invited into a world of laughter, wonder, and imagination. Perhaps even more importantly, Bobby says those moments allow adults to reconnect with their own childhood and create memories that families will cherish long after the show is over. On this Make a Difference Minute, I have my friend, Fran Birdwell, who is living with stage 4 colon cancer while also carrying the profound grief of losing two sons, Jacob and Matthew. Rather than trying to “get over” grief, Fran has learned that grief becomes something we carry. Drawing from a poem by Jessica Watson, she shares the powerful image of grief as a pebble. It is something we never fully put down, but over time we learn how to carry it without allowing it to consume us or steal our purpose. Because grief touches every life, Fran believes this message extends far beyond grieving parents. Whether we have lost a child, a spouse, a parent, a friend, or dreams we once held dear, we all face loss. The challenge isn't to forget or move on, but to keep living, loving, and finding meaning while carrying what remains. Through unimaginable pain, Fran's life is a testament to hope, resilience, & the truth that grief and purpose can exist side by side. On tomorrow's Make a Difference Minute, I reflect on a word we don't hear very often, but perhaps need more than ever: magnanimous. It means having a greatness of heart. It describes people who are generous in spirit, gracious in disagreement, and unwilling to let bitterness or resentment define them. Being magnanimous doesn't mean ignoring wrong or pretending hurt doesn't exist. It means choosing dignity over revenge, character over pettiness, and kindness over cruelty. In a world that often rewards outrage and division, greatness of heart is a quiet strength. It's the ability to rise above, to forgive, and to treat others with respect even when it's difficult. Sometimes, making a difference begins with the way we respond when we've been wronged. On this Make A Difference Minute, I'm remembering my friend, Chad Collins. Chad and I grew up together around Sanders Street and Second Avenue in Athens, Alabama. As the years passed, life took us in different directions, but the memories and friendship remained. Over the last several weeks, many people followed Chad's battle with pancreatic cancer. Through it all, one thing remained constant, Chad asked for prayers. He was humble by nature and never wanted to be a burden. Even when friends rallied around him and organized support for his family, Chad admitted he probably would have said no if they had asked first. That's just who Chad was. Although his fight was much shorter than anyone hoped, the outpouring of love from family, friends, and the community was a powerful reminder that we aren't meant to carry life's burdens alone. Tonight, I'm remembering a childhood friend, and I pray for his wife, Crystal, his son, Carson, and all who loved him. I'm grateful for the memories we shared and for the example Chad set. Having a place where food and household items are available allows children and families to receive support while preserving their privacy. She also shares her confidence in the Cedar Hill School community. Time and again, neighbors have come together during difficult moments. On this Make A Difference Minute, I have country music artist Michael Peterson sharing experiences that shaped him through years of performing for veterans, military families, and active-duty service members. Through more than 500 shows, Michael discovered that music was often about much more than entertainment. Whether helping a soldier connect with his wife during Christmas in Iraq or providing a moment of relief for service members returning from difficult patrols, he learned that sometimes the greatest impact comes from simply showing up and creating a moment people need. It's a reminder that behind every uniform is a story, and sometimes music has a way of reaching places words alone cannot. Many adults carry fear, uncertainty, or simply missed opportunities when it comes to water safety and swimming. Kristin explains that adult learners need a different approach and that every person has different goals, whether it's overcoming fear, gaining confidence around water, learning basic swimming skills, or simply feeling comfortable enough to enjoy exercise in a pool. Learning water competency is not just for children. It can create confidence, improve safety, & open doors at any age. On tonight's show, I'm joined by Kristin Stitt, Managing Partner of North Alabama Swim Schools and SafeSplash Swim Labs in Huntsville and Madison. Most parents believe they know whether their child can swim. Kristin says the bigger question may be whether a child is truly water competent. With a background in healthcare leadership and a passion for drowning prevention, Kristin is helping families understand that swim lessons are only one part of the picture. We'll talk about why parents often overestimate swimming ability, the importance of adaptive aquatics, and why swimming may be one of the most valuable investments a family can make for a child's future. We'll also discuss why Kristin calls swimming “the first and forever sport” and how it can build confidence, discipline, emotional health, and life-saving skills that last far beyond the pool. Today, I'm sharing a reminder that difficult beginnings don't always lead to difficult endings and why some of life's best moments come after rough starts.
