Sharkey's Treehouse: Presenting New Musicians, Celebrating the Legends
David Luning is in the house! David’s band mates joined him in the studio for their latest cd “Restless” The Rink Studios (TRS) for us, with Ben Dubin on bass, Linden Reed on drums and Dave Sampson on guitar, and they’re a great bunch of guys. They sat down with me at my home base in Sacramento TRS and performed a four-song set from “Restless” in front of a live audience; and we didn’t want it end. ‘Restless” was produced and engineered by Karl Derfler. His credits include Tom Waits, Dave Matthews, Mother Hips, Smash Mouth and Live among many others. David has a lot of experience and miles under his feet in a relatively short amount of time. He attended Berkelee School of Music, he’s almost always constantly touring, and he’s an American Idol contestant. Keith Urban told him he had ”staunch originality, no one’s doing what you do…good singer songwriter, story-telling guy” and Jennifer Lopez commented on his performance saying “I love it. He has a really, really beautiful tone.” David writes, records and performs all of his own songs and he’ll talk about his process. He’ll also talk about the music industry as it is now and how it’s a double-edged sword. Luning is preparing to release his most dynamic and gripping collection to date, 'Restless,' and he can trace it all back to one fateful night that changed everything. His self- released debut album, 'Just Drop On By,' garnered acclaim from both critics and fellow musicians alike, with country megastar Keith Urban hailing Luning's "staunch originality." Songs from the album landed numerous film and TV placements, most recently on NBC's 'Grimm,' and Luning's reputation for exhilarating live performances earned him dates with luminaries like Jackie Greene, Dave and Phil Alvin, and Elvin Bishop, along with a slew of festival performances up and down the West Coast. Rebellious troubadour” as called by Rolling Stone, David Luning is celebrated for his compelling, dynamic live performances sharing the stage with Tedeschi Trucks, Chris Issak, Robert Earl Keen, Jay Leno, Son Volt, Jackie Greene among others. Luning’s sophmore album, 'Restless', showcases a collection of songs that explores themes of love, acceptance, and real life with a heartfelt universality. The Alternate Root hails, “He has set the bar high with thoughtful and unique styling, well-crafted lyrics and versatile vocals." This week on MCR, two takes on Texas, one of them from Australia. Do you know the all female vocal quartet from Sydney called All our Exes Live In Texas? You will after this episode from Liberty Hall. They're a lot of fun. And we take in the very soul of Texas roadhouse blues, country and R&B with the great Lee Roy Parnell. He's got his first new album in 11 years and we'll hear songs from that. Also on the bill a surprising take on acoustic newgrass by red-headed Irish folk singer Danny Burns and a master-level Nashville based band. And David Luning who launched a folk career after being inspired by John Prine. We get it.
David Luning and his band are earning their accolades in the best way possible - simply by being good at what they do and by working hard. After high school, Luning left his hometown in Northern California and set out to study film scoring at Boston's prestigious Berklee College of Music. Things were going just fine until he happened to hear a John Prine record at a college party. Prine's seemingly effortless, enigmatic and elegantly simple songwriting style was a personal epiphany for Luning, and it set him on an entirely new tack. After convincing his parents that he needed to drop out of school to pursue this new career, Luning leaned hard into the craft of writing and performing. It wasn't long before he'd assembled a band, released an album and hit the road. That self-released first record, Just Drop On By, put him on the radar of listeners and music supervisors alike, and Luning's music began to land placements in movies and TV shows. All the while, Luning and his stalwart band were logging miles playing shows across the country, raising their profile and getting out in front of even more new fans. The beginning of 2017 finds Luning poised to release his sophomore album, Restless, and the record is a step forward in both writing and performing skill. After a quick spin, it's evident that Luning shares some of his mentor's approach; his songs - like Prine's - are delivered in a deceivingly simple style that comes across as unadorned truth. Luning's melodies are catchy and hummable, and not a syllable or guitar lick is wasted. It's a refreshing and mature listen in a world of overly-quantized and auto-tuned artists all desperately and loudly vying for attention.
