Today, we have William "Ted" Hartwell with us discussing gambling addiction in this episode: "Losing It All To Gambling". We discuss William's personal story and struggles with gambling. How he got into it, how deep he got before realizing that he had an issue and needed help. We discussed the modern aspects of gambling, i.e., sports wagering, lootboxes, online gambling, the state of social games and how kids are getting into gambling at an early age and what you, as a parent can do about it. He is a longtime member of the National Council on Problem Gambling. Mr. Hartwell is the Principal Investigator of a DRI research study examining the impact of problem gambling in Native American tribal communities in Nevada. Mr. Hartwell is in long-term recovery from gambling disorder himself, and he promotes awareness, prevention, and treatment of problem gambling as a consultant to the Nevada Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG). He has spoken publicly and personally on this issue on many occasions and is dedicated to humanizing and illuminating the illness of disordered gambling. He provides annual lectures on this topic for the UNLV Boyd School of Law Gaming Regulation and the University of Utah Gaming Regulation classes, as well as for many other departments within the higher education system. He was a regular participant for many years in the UNLV International Gaming Institute's Responsible Gaming Ambassador training program for Las Vegas Sands Corporation and has consulted to MGM Resorts International and the US-Japan Business Council in their efforts to develop business related to the first Integrated Casino Resorts in Japan. Mr. Hartwell introduced the NCPG's youth gambling awareness and family gambling awareness programs into the Clark County School District in Nevada and he has recently developed educational programs for local schools on the topics of video gaming awareness and student-athlete gambling awareness. Mr. Hartwell has served at the pleasure of three Governors on the Nevada State Advisory Committee on Problem Gambling since November 2012. He was the 2014 Shannon L. Bybee Award recipient for his continuing work on advocacy, outreach, and research on the issue of problem gambling. In 2021, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the National Council on Problem Gambling. Mr. Hartwell lives in Las Vegas, where he is also a professional cellist with the Las Vegas Philharmonic, a devoted husband to a recent Russian immigrant, a past soccer and volleyball coach, and the proud father of a precocious 16-year-old girl and three cats.   A bit about me (Dr. Orest Komarnyckyj): Dr. Orest Komarnyckyj enjoyed a prestigious career as a periodontal regenerative surgeon moving to a new passion in June 2018. Well…for starters, you have to be lucky, in order to get lucky & Joel Jenkins, Head PGA Professional at Mount Pleasant Golf Club in Lowell, MA is certainly one lucky man, to the tune of 67,000,000 to 1! After a lifetime of doughnuts in the hole in one category, he managed to card not one, but TWO ACES in a single round at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas, NV. Listen in as he shares the incredible tale!  It's 2018, a beautiful November day, at the famed Shadow Creek. Higgy and Joel were both playing that day on different teams, at the traveling NEPGA Pro Am tournament. Unfortunately there had been some weather delays, so the tournament was off to a slow start.  Once it finally got going, Joel was a tad concerned about his performance. Despite getting the coveted shotgun spot of starting at hole one, Joel came out of the gate bogey, bogey, bogey. Gratefully, things started to look up as he made par on #4, a brutal par 5.  Joel would've never guessed walking to the tee at hole number five what was about to happen. And then it happened! He thought for sure he was long and even took his putter onto the green, because he absolutely didn't think it was in the jar, even though all his boys were convinced he had holed it. As he walked up to the hole and peeked in, there sat his ball…and the celebration ensued! He was in complete disbelief. His friends were making quite a ruckus and he gleefully joined in the festivities, but his mind was whirling! Then at the turn, during lunch, he celebrated with a huge plate of all of his favorites. Dogs, burgers, sausages, the works! Stuffed to the rafters from lunch, he thought the second half of the day wasn't going to go all that well, and thought who cares! The hole in one monkey is off my back finally after 35 years! The rest of this day is going to be a breeze…or so he thought! He had already jarred it on number five, had a healthy lunch, then 8 holes later, threw it in the jar again at number 13! Two ones, on the same card, at Shadow Creek! Joel joined the ranks of a very, very small club of golfers that day. There are not many players who can say they have made two hole in ones, during one round of golf. Mounting mortgage rates and home prices are creating increasing affordability pressures for some prospective buyers. “The annual growth in the U.S. index was the largest we have measured in the 45-year history of the CoreLogic Home Price Index,” Frank Nothaft, chief economist at CoreLogic, said in a statement. “In April, 30-year fixed mortgage rates averaged nearly 2 percentage points higher than one year earlier. “With the growth in home prices, that means the monthly principal and interest payment to buy the median-priced home was up about 50% in April [2022] compared with last April.” As of April 21, the payment-to-income ratio for homeowners was 32.5%, just 1.6 percentage points shy of the record of 34.1% in July 2006, according to Black Knight's latest monthly Mortgage Monitor report. Black Knight forecasts that a 5% increase in home prices would push affordability to its worst level on record. Housing prices are up 5.9% since the start of the year. Buyers who closed on a property in March had a good chance of locking in mortgage rates at around 4%. By late April, rates had climbed past 5% — and were up by more than 200 basis points from the same period last year. That trend might derail more prospective buyers, CoreLogic noted. Interest rates hit 5.10% last week, compared with 2.98% a year ago, according to Freddie Mac PMMS. We also discuss if Mississippi quarterback Matt Corral could be their guy based on a conversation QB coach Mike Sullivan apparently had with David Carr of the NFL Network.Alex has completed his entire 2022 mock draft as of Wednesday morning, so we review it in this show and especially the first round of it. We talk about players we would bang the table in the second half of the first round and beyond.Alex and I haven't talked a lot about Georgia defensive tackle Jordan Davis possibly being the Steelers first round draft pick this year, so we fix that in this show. We discuss the likelihood of Davis landing with the Baltimore Ravens and talk about how the Steelers would use him if they wind up drafting him.Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert talked a little about defensive end Stephon Tuitt recently, so we cover that tiny quote from him.
