When Ivan and Annette Stineman disappeared from their home in Concord, California in the summer of 2000, it immediately raised red alarmed with those closest to the elderly couple. Those alarms proved to be justified when, a week later, the remains of the Stinemans and three others were discovered in duffel bags in Sacramento River Delta. The day after the remains were found in river, investigators arrested Taylor and Justin Helzer, and Justin's girlfriend, Dawn Godman, for the murders of Ivan and Annette Stineman. A short time later, they would also be charged with the murders of Taylor's girlfriend, Selina Bishop, her mother, Jenny Villarin, and Villarin's boyfriend, Jim Gamble. At first, investigators believed the murders were part of a plot to extort the Stinemans for a large amount of money, but the deeper they dug into the lives and backgrounds of the killers, a different and far more bizarre motive began to emerge.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAguila, Justino. 2000. In this episode of THE MENTORS RADIO, Host Tom Loarie talks with Terry Hanck, a multi-award-winning blues and soul saxophonist, singer and songwriter whose journey is as raw and real as the music he plays. Terry didn't follow a straight line to success. He started as a surfer and diver, found his voice through a saxophone at age 21, toured the world with Elvin Bishop, and went on to lead his own band for more than three decades. Along the way, he's won multiple BMA Awards, that is Blues Music Awards (BMA) and played with legends of the genre. But this is more than a story about music—it's about finding your passion, staying one step ahead of a “real job,” and living life on your terms. You won't want to miss this conversation. This week on Time Signatures with Jim Ervin, Erv heads past the halfway point in Season four, with legendary Bluesman and elder statesman, Elvin Bishop. Many will remember Elvin for his smash hit with Mickey Thomas on vocals in 1976, ‘Fooled Around And Fell In Love', but Bishop's bigger claim to fame was his work with the Chicago Blues scene in the 1960s and 70's. Elvin talks about meeting a young Paul Butterfield on some steps of an apartment building shortly after arriving in Chicago, his jam sessions with Muddy, Magic Sam, Otis Rush and others, and his advice to the next generation of the Blues. By any description, Randall Bramblett can claim a varied career. Aside from the fact that he's released no fewer than 15 solo albums, as a solo artist, he's also been a much in-demand session player, having worked with Gregg Allman, Bonnie Raitt, Robbie Robertson, Elvin Bishop, Steve Winwood, Widespread Panic, and any number of others. That's hardly surprising considering the fact that he's a multi-instrumentalist who's adept on keyboards, saxophones, flute, guitar, mandolin, and harmonica.Bramblett's career dates back to the early ‘70s when he played a major role in the band Sea Level, a jazzy spin-off from the Allman Brothers Band. In the years since, he's continued to pursue a decidedly varied array of genres, including rock, jazz, blues and R&B. With his new album, Paradise Breakdown, he shares a similar set of sounds, making it an ideal showcase for his verve and versatility. Charlie Musselwhite and Elvin Bishop, two towering legends in the blues world, have carved their places in music history through decades of innovation, collaboration, and a shared love for the blues. Both emerged from the heart of Chicago's thriving 1960s blues scene, though they took distinct paths that would eventually lead to an unforgettable partnership. Musselwhite, born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, grew up surrounded by the rich musical traditions of Delta blues, country, and gospel. Moving to Chicago in the early 1960s, he quickly became part of the city's electric blues explosion, playing alongside legends like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. His 1967 debut album, Stand Back! Here Comes Charley Musselwhite's Southside Band, was a groundbreaking success, blending traditional blues with elements of jazz, rock, and country, and establishing him as one of the foremost harmonica players in the world. Over the years, Musselwhite's deep, soulful harmonica playing and gritty, heartfelt vocals earned him multiple Grammy Awards and Blues Music Awards, solidifying his place as a key figure in the preservation and progression of blues music. Elvin Bishop, born in California and raised in Oklahoma, brought his own unique style to the blues. Influenced by the sounds of country and rhythm and blues, Bishop's guitar playing drew from his Southern roots, blending blues with rock and country in a way that was both electrifying and soulful. After moving to Chicago to attend the University of Chicago, Bishop found himself immersed in the local blues scene, joining forces with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band in the early 1960s. His time with the band was pivotal, as they helped pioneer the fusion of blues and rock, which would soon come to define much of the music of that era. Bishop's solo career took off in the 1970s, highlighted by the massive hit “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” (1976), which remains a classic of the rock and blues genres. Over the course of his career, Bishop has released more than 20 albums, receiving critical acclaim for his fiery guitar work, playful lyrics, and his seamless blending of blues, boogie-woogie, country, and rock. The collaboration between Musselwhite and Bishop brought together two titans of blues who shared a deep respect for the genre's traditions while continuously pushing its boundaries. The pair had crossed paths many times throughout their careers, but their formal collaboration came to full fruition with the release of their album 100 Years of Blues (2020). The album, steeped in the authenticity of their combined experience, features raw, unfiltered blues with a modern twist. Their chemistry, honed over years of friendship and mutual admiration, shines through on every track, with Musselwhite's masterful harmonica complementing Bishop's electrifying guitar riffs and distinctive vocals. Together, Charlie Musselwhite and Elvin Bishop represent a unique blend of two blues journeys that began in the same place but evolved along different paths. Whether playing in a stripped-down duo format or backed by a full band, their collaboration embodies the timelessness of the blues while showcasing the creative innovation that has kept the genre alive and thriving for over half a century. Today, they continue to perform and record, keeping their sound fresh, vital, and deeply rooted in the authentic blues tradition, ensuring that their legacy will influence future generations of musicians and fans alike.

A DePalmber to ReMalmber reaches its thrilling conclusion as our intrepid director kicks off an action mega-franchise with an opening entry that's far more 'film' than 'flick' -- it's 1996's Mission: Impossible, directed by Brian DePalma, written by David Koepp and Robert Towne, and starring Tom Cruise, Jon Voight, Emmanuelle Béart, Henry Czerny, Jean Reno, Ving Rhames, Vanessa Redgrave, Kristin Scott Thomas, Emilio Estevez and Rolf Saxon. This classic of the 90s now takes its rightful place in the ADHD-DVD canon. Somehow, perhaps in viewing it within the context of some of DePalma's broader work, both hosts enjoyed this movie more than ever before on this latest rewatch. All that plus-with bonus-also: Justin's got theatrical field reports on The Holdovers and Godzilla Minus One, and Hayley can't receive gifts. Other works discussed in this episode include The Boy and the Heron, Godzilla (1997, 2014), Godzilla vs Kong, Friday Night Lights, Fooled Around Fell In Love by Elvin Bishop, Guardians of the Galaxy, Topkapi, and the entire Mission: Impossible franchise. If you'd like to watch the film before listening to our discussion, and it's not a requirement though in the case of a fine film such as this we do recommend you do, it can be found streaming on Paramount+(with). We'll be back next week with the first annual Shaqmas celebration on the program, as we honour Hayley's holiday tradition by watching a film starring Shaquille O'Neal on Christmas. This year it's friend and former guest EJ Feddes making his return with an unseen film from his collection: Steel (1997), starring Shaq as John Henry Irons, DC Comics' black Superman. It's... not very good, which should make it lots of fun to talk about, so we'll see you next week at the movies!
What the H? Exactly. The award-winning* Lickers discuss some of their favorite records filed under the letter H. -- In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For nearly one half of a century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2023, idiotic, introverted hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential themes of their upcoming thirty-third episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably good solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. They had previously utilized the letters A thru G, so naturally, they went with H. Enjoy a nostalgic trip back in time as Joyann Parker beautifully weaves the stories of Patsy Cline's life and career in and out of the music you know and love. In this powerful tribute performance, Parker and her seasoned band showcase the most popular and best loved of Pasty's songs. Vintage costumes and ambiance enhance Joyann's uncanny and authentic channeling of Cline's classic vocals. Hear Patsy's iconic songs like “Crazy,” “Walking After Midnight,” “Sweet Dreams,” “Faded Love,” “Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray,” “She's Got You” and many more! A northern Wisconsin native, Joyann Parker, like many artists, discovered her love of music at a very young age. While the multifaceted and versatile performer found her authentic voice later in life, she has created her inimitable blend of roots music that fuses soul, gospel, R&B, and traditional blues - combined with a voice that is booming and soulful - Joyann Parker is establishing herself as a masterclass performer. Steadily a rising star on the Midwest music scene, with two critically acclaimed studio albums under her belt, 2018's Hard to Love, and 2021's Out of the Dark, numerous award nominations, and opening for award-winning artists like Robert Cray and Elvin Bishop, Parker is now bringing her full range of talent as an accomplished singer, pianist, guitarist and songwriter to national and international stages. Mitch Woods and his Rocket 88's have been playing their unique brand of “rock a boogie” for some 40 years now. Back in 2017, Woods issued a career-defining album, Friends Along the Way, featuring a stellar lineup of guests, including Van Morrison, Taj Mahal, Ruthie Foster, Maria Muldaur, Elvin Bishop and many others. Problem was, his record label at the time had just decided to focus only on videos, leaving this great album without an audience. Now, he's regained the master recordings and has reissued the album and added five bonus tracks. He and his Rocket 88's are out on the road promoting the reissue. We chat with Woods about how the project got rolling with a "yes" from Van Morrison, plus how he took up residency at the piano bar during the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise

There have been a few performers in my life that have hosted a secret clubhouse gathering, which provided me a respite from the grueling business of living - people whose comforting, yet compelling personalities, who, by sharing secrets, made me laugh heartily, or pulled me into a safe harbor of balanced perspective: Late nights under the covers with Jean Shepard, lonely, frustrating mornings of boredom with Howard Stern and his crew; and the first time I heard Elvin Bishop do this monologue. IN MY OWN DREAM was Paul Butterfield's follow up album to THE RESURRECTION OF PIGBOY CRABSHAW - where the legendary harpist stepped up to a more orchestrated sound. Previously, Elvin Bishop had been the band's second guitarist, wingman to the incomparable Mike Bloomfield, who caught most of the starry critical heat after the band's initial rocket launch. Here Elvin takes the spotlight and charms with such relaxed, magical monological improv that it catapulted him into a huge solo career and a string of hits in the 70's that was capped with the number five single FOOLED AROUND AND FELL IN LOVE. The foremost purveyor of southern good time boogie, at 80 years old Elvin continues to dole out big fun and happiness. In DRUNK AGAIN we are in John's Tavern with Elvin, who greets everyone jovially, chugs a few Gordon gins, flirts with a sassy bassline, gets tight (“drunk as grandma's old yeller hog”), and proceeds to blow the roof off the place with his guitar pyrotechnics - a one of a kind performance - breathtaking!
Leo Schumaker's "Bluesland" music podcast from July 13, 2023. Here is the music of Joe Bonamassa, Alastair Greene, Jimmie Johnson, Steve Earle, War, B.B.King, Elvin Bishop and more. It's summer and these some of my favorite hot tunes. See you next Thursday 7-9 PM on KMRE. Ladios.
The nightclub scene was magical in Chicago's South and West sides in the late 1950s and during that time, white kids from the suburbs were finding The Blues at the end of their radio dials, buying the records, studying the music and traveling down to the clubs to meet and play with their idols! That story is told in the new Bob Sarles film, Born in Chicago. We are joined by musician/bandleader Jimmy Vivino and Blues legend Barry Goldberg who, along with Mike Bloomfield and Paul Butterfield, learned his craft at the feet of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King and Buddy Guy. Barry and Jimmy created the film's soundtrack and they are steeped in the history of Chicago Blues and loaded with stories and wisdom about class, race, inter-generational guidance and the joy of sharing and celebrating an art form that contains the power to transform us for the better.Barry and Jimmy give us a full account of the evolution of blues and blues rock from the '50s through today. Barry tells us about sitting in with Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf as a teenager and his frenemy relationship with the British invasion acts like The Stones and Eric Clapton who also idolized the Blues greats. He talks about playing in one of our nation's first racially integrated bands, Electric Flag and his experience on stage with Dylan when he “went electric” at the Newport Folk Festival.Jimmy and Barry describe composing the documentary's soundtrack & more and the blues standards that informed their musical choices.Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending Shiny Happy People: Dugger Family Secrets on Prime and Fair Play on Hulu and Prime.Path Points of Interest:Born in ChicagoBorn in Chicago - IMDBQ&A with Directors in Chicago ReaderBorn in Chicago on FacebookJimmy VivinoJimmy Vivino on WikipediaJimmy Vivino on InstagramJimmy Vivino on FacebookBarry GoldbergBarry Goldberg on WikipediaBarry Goldberg on imdbShiny Happy People: Dugger Family SecretsFair Play - Prime/Hulu

STREET CREDWhen talking about Paul Butterfield there's a lot to cover, and I can't do it all justice in this small space. I recommend the documentary HORN FROM THE HEART to get all the nuances in Paul Butterfield's story. However, listening to this compilation, one can get a nice view of the shapely arc of this band's journey from young-turk, blues afficionados to Americana pioneers - each step along the way characterized by a stirring evocation of authentic feeling. It's hard from this distance to understand how massively important this group was in terms of fusing blues with folk, rock, and jazz, not to mention world music. At the center of it all was the harmonica prodigy, born on the south side of Chicago, trained at the feet of the blues masters, but then adopted by Dylan and the Newport folkies, and instrumental to the explosion that became our modern music of the 60s and 70s. East-West (1966) still blows my mind. This 13 minute magnum jazz-raga opus, featuring the amazing Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop on guitars with Paul wailing on harp remains stubbornly on my Sunday morning playlist. Joe Boyd and Paul Rothchild at Elektra discovered them and lovingly brought their sound to our turntables, and on this cart from six years later, the highlights from that company's influence is captured for all time. It was important for Elektra's transition from folk label to one of the premier purveyors of quality rock; it was important for Dylan's transition from troubadour to rock god, and it was an important liaison for us white American teenagers appreciation of our blues heritage. You might argue that this was another example of “white savior” appropriation, but The Paul Butterfield Blues Band was an integrated outfit, featuring Howlin' Wolf's rhythm section of Sam Lay and Jerome Arnold, and Butterfield, born in Chicago and raised at the master's feet had all the right moves. For a deeper dive: https://www.hornfromtheheart.com/
