Having seen her share of hard times growing upa small town in Western North Carolina, she started singing in church when she was five years old when her Mother would take her. Lee's love of music grew as a child when her Daddy played country classics like Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette and Patsy Cline around the house. Lee's father, a cab driver, taught her to play the guitar at age seven and they would sing together while she rode around town with him in his taxi going on calls. “My Daddy, who named me Brenda Lee after the amazing country singer, would always tell me one day you will be playing at the Grand Ole Opry and from that point on I knew I wanted to be a performer.” Heavily influenced by legendary musicians like Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, The Judds Lorrie Morgan Susan Tedischi and Lynyrd Skynyrd, Lee's personal sound is a mix between traditional Country and raspy Blues with an added Southern Rock flare. When Lee was 20 years old, she joined a couple of bands and taught herself to play the drums. She travelled to New York City and had the privilege of singing backup for Artimus Pyle, Leslie Hawkins and JoJo Billingsly – three original members of Lynyrd Skynyrd. In 2020, Lee won “Vocalist of the Year” at the Josie Music Awards. Her 2021 EP Undamaged, which she wrote, won “EP Album of the year” at Josie Music Awards and also Top 20 Best of 2021 for Women of Country. This week we welcome Grammy award-winning country star, John Berry! GRAMMY Award-winning country star John Berry celebrates 42 years as a Country music performer. In 2020 Grammy award-winning country star, John Berry took advantage of being off the road. Highlights include partnering with Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt for his weekly series, "Songs and Stories For Kids," which charted multiple times on the Pollstar Live Stream Chart. He released a new video and re-recorded a new single for "The Graduation Song," started his new podcast, Faith Family & Friends and is ending the year with his 24th annual Songs and Stories with John Berry Christmas. In 2019 John Berry celebrated the 28th anniversary since signing his first record deal with his most recent single “The Richest Man” from the new album Thomas Road. In 2019, Berry was diagnosed with throat cancer, requiring 35 treatments combined of radiation and chemotherapy. In 2018 charted at #30 on the Music Row Breakout Charts with the single, “Beautifully Broken,” which is featured in the soundtrack for the movie of the same name. The singer-songwriter rose to stardom on the country charts of the 1990s with such mega hits as Your Love Amazes Me, Standing on the Edge of Goodbye and She’s Taken a Shine. His annual Christmas tours brighten the holidays for thousands, as does his electrifying rendition of O’ Holy Night. During the 90’s and early 2000’s, John placed 20 singles on the country charts, 6 of which went Top 5, with Your Love Amazes Me, scoring a #1 on the Billboard and Radio & Records Country Chart as well as Standing on the Edge of Goodbye and She’s Taken a Shine earning the #1 slot in Radio & Records. He has earned multiple Gold and Platinum records over the years. John was nominated for the ACM Top New Male Vocalist in 1994, won a Grammy Award in 1996 for his participation in Amazing Grace: A Country Salute to Gospel Vol. 1, was nominated for another Grammy in 1995 for his smash hit Your Love Amazes Me and was nominated for the CMA Horizon Award and Top Male Vocalist Award in 1995. In 1997 he was nominated for Vocal Event of the Year (for Long Haired Country Boy with Charlie Daniels and Hal Ketchum) and in 2013 John was nominated for the Mainstream Country Male Artist by the ICM Awards. And thanks to the miracles of modern technology, he even sang a duet with the late, great Patsy Cline. “I love what I do, with a passion not seen in quite some time. I’m hopeful and excited about the future. I love singing and always will. I have a bus, an incredible stage presentation, a great band, hands-on management team and I’m always all dressed up and ready to go.” John’s enduringly powerful performances draw on a lifetime of making music and living life. Born in South Carolina and raised in Georgia, he began playing guitar at 13, performing shows at age 14 and making records at age 19. “By the time I was 17, I knew that music was what I wanted to do with my life”; and he has done it well ever since. Between 1979 and 1990 he recorded and marketed six albums on his own labels. The Graduation Song, which he wrote during his senior year in high school, became a perennial favorite at graduation ceremonies. It appeared on two of his early collections. Those early discs and John’s strong regional popularity attracted attention on Music Row. Capitol Records signed him to his first major label contract in 1992. Berry’s co-written hits A Mind of Her Own and Kiss Me in the Car introduced him to radio audiences in 1993. Then Your Love Amazes Me, What’s in it for Me and You and Only You thrust him to stardom in 1994. Standing on the Edge of Goodbye, I Think About it all the Time, and If I Had Any Pride Left at All were all major hits the following year, with Standing on the Edge of Goodbye earning John the coveted 1995 Grammy nomination. But it was his stunning performance of the title track of the 1995 CD O’ Holy Night that led to his most enduring legacy to date. John began doing special Christmas tours that year and 2016 marks his 20th anniversary holiday concert tour. He has big plans to celebrate and involve the fans like never before for this anniversary celebration. He has also issued three more Christmas-music collections. If O’ Holy Night is all that anyone remembers of me, that’s fine with me,” he comments about his perennial Christmas popularity. “It is a truly inspired piece of music.” Happily, there were more successes to come. The hit Change My Mind earned John a Top-5 spot on the Country music charts in 1996. She’s Taken a Shine became an even bigger hit in 1997. Both fans and the media took note again when There He Goes was released as a 1999 duet with Patsy Cline. In 2002, Berry returned to making records for his own company, Clear Sky Records. Songs and Stories, a double CD was issued that year. In 2003, John Berry released his I Give My Heart collection and its critically applauded wedding anthem Will You Marry Me. The disc also contained his versions of such classic love songs as Time in a Bottle, If, Love Look What You’ve Done to Me, Faithfully, Lady and Let’s Stay Together. I Give My Heart inspired still another popular concert series, The Love Tour. In 2008, Those Were the Days, was released, marking John’s return to mainstream country music. He created his first Christian-music CD in 2011. In 2012, John published the combination book and CD, again titled Songs and Stories. Over the years he has continued to tour steadily. “We just have a great group of fans who welcome us every year. They are always there.” In late 2015 John launched a crowd funded Kickstarter project that proved very successful. Overwhelmed by the fan response, John assembled an all-star studio team and cut both a Country album entitled What I Love the Most and a new album simply titled Christmas and released both in late 2016. Blessed with the ability to make the music he wanted to make (and not what a label dictated) allowed John the time to write and create what many music critics who have heard bits & pieces are saying could be his best, most complete project yet. “I'm excited to have been able to release this new music and bring it to the fans through a new distribution agreement with Sony RED. It’s a new time in the music business and technology allows me to be closer to my fans and interact in new ways. You know, God just keeps blessing me. There are new opportunities coming at every turn.” “With time, I’ve learned that the road to fulfillment is doing what I was called to do, love to do, and then doing it the best I can, regardless of the circumstances. And for me, that is making music and singing for people." 2017 found John touring in several configurations (acoustic solo, acoustic trio and full band) with plans to release another new album followed by the continuation of his legendary Christmas Tour. He and his family moved back to Music City after several years in Georgia, and 2017 saw John pursuing a touring and personal appearance schedule that is more active than ever. Given his wide range of music and number of releases, John is fortunate in that he can book a solo show with just himself and guitar, a small-band acoustic show or a full-band engagement and has more than enough hit material to captivate a crowd and deliver an evening full of musical memories. Also, in August of 2017 John launched a new, weekly internationally syndicated television show entitled Songs and Stories with John Berry that explored the songs and stories that changed the lives of his weekly guest. Superstar guests in Season 1 of the show included Billy Ray Cyrus, Billy Dean, Mo Pitney, Neal McCoy, Suzy Bogguss, Collin Raye, Craig Morgan, Mark Wills, Delbert McClinton, Clay Walker and Lee Roy Parnell. 2018 John celebrated his 25t h anniversary since signing his major label deal, Season 2 of Songs and Stories with John Berry aired multiple times weekly to over 105 million homes across the United States as well as the UK and New Zealand on great networks like Heartland Television, The Family Channel, The Country Channel, Phil Mack’s Keep it Country (UK), Country TV (New Zealand) and AMGTV. In 2018 charted at #30 on the Music Row Breakout Charts with the single, “Beautifully Broken,” which is featured in the soundtrack for the movie of the same name. John also toured the country in all performance sectors, releasing several new projects and a few surprises. 2019 continued to celebrate the 26th anniversary since signing his first record deal with his most recent single “The Richest Man” from the new album Thomas Road.
In January 2019 , Berry was diagnosed with throat cancer, requiring 35 treatments combined of radiation and chemotherapy. A benefit concert was held with performers such as Garth Brooks, The Oak Ridge Boys, Vince Gill and over 24 other high profile entertainers from Country, Americana and Rock, raising funds to offset his out of pocket medical expenses, while also donating a significant portion of the proceeds earned to others in the music community in need via Music Health Alliance. 2020 has many as of yet undisclosed plans which will include his annual John Berry Songs and Stories Christmas Tour, marking its 24th year. Very kind and open, lovely story Glenn Worf started his Nashville career as a touring bassist but quit traveling to concentrate on studio work. He’s worked with iconic Country artists like Willie Nelson, George Jones, Emmy Lou Harris, George Strait, Alan Jackson, Jerry Douglas, Allison Krauss, Lee Roy Parnell, Kenny Rogers, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Randy Travis, Brent Mason, Steve Wariner, Reba, Trace Adkins, Mac McAnally & many others. On this Richard Bennett interview, GREAT stories about playing with Mark Knopfler, Neil Diamond, Billy Joel, Helen Reddy, Jim Stafford, Glen Campbell, Steve Earl, Al Casey… his unique approach to writing and recording, a difficult low point that found Richard struggling for almost a year, becoming a top producer and realizing he had to stop… how he went from playing dingy beer joints at 14, to playing on the most desirable sessions and touring the world, by “falling forward”... favorite musicians he’s enjoyed playing with, and the ONE musician who taught him more than he could ever have imagined… 2 toughest decisions he’s ever made, humility, kindness, eating well and carrying less on your shoulders. INCREDIBLE conversation, what a lovely guy Richard Bennett is THE most successful side man I’ve had on this show. He’s also as humble as he is talented. He’s been Mark Knopfler’s guitar player in the studio and on the road since 1994 (26 yrs), and spent 17 years before that as Neil Diamond’s guitar player - again, both studio and touring. Here’s a very small sample of the people he’s played with since his first session in 1968. Bear in mind, for most of these artists, Richard played on several to many of their records: Eric Anderson, Big Al Anderson, Al Casey, David Cassidy, Partridge Family, Steve Earl, Vince Gill, Billy Joel, Dave Mason, Mac McAnally, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Lee Roy Parnell, Helen Reddy, Jim Stafford, Nancy Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Weird Al, Duane Eddy, Glen Campbell, the Ventures & about a dozen soundtracks including The Wrecking Crew documentary and one of my favorite movies, Westworld. He’s also produced LOADS of records for major artists, and released 6 excellent instrumental CDs of his own. Surviving the Music Industry

Terry McBride in his growing up years was one of the most sought-after bass players in the local Austin music scene. After auditioning in his father's band, his career was proven more so with other Texas collaborations like Lee Roy Parnell, Bill Carter and the Blame, Jimmy Dale Gilmore, Johnny Duncan, Rosie Flores, and Delbert McClinton would soon follow. As one does eventually, songs become of interest. A meeting with Jody Williams, former BMI Vice President of Creative, and MCA President Tony Brown would soon discover and start the 1990's legacy of McBride and The Ride. Songs like "Sacred Ground" a #1 Single in 1992 surely would have locked in their success but such is the ride a quick one, the demise came from a surprising angle. A near-death experience, on and off the wagon, and co-writes and cuts with Brooks and Dunn. Terry shares that there is no feeling than the cut of a song and to live in sobriety is a life worth living for these days. Celebrating more than a decade sober, he's releasing his latest project Rebels and Angels on October 23rd. American Songwriter Podcast Network

Como solista, dejó éxitos como "Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me", "Stop and Smell the Roses" y de manera muy especial "Texas In My Rear View Mirror", de tintes autobiográficos. Canciones como “A Change Is Gonna Come” pudieron costarle la vida a Sam Cooke. Escuchar audio

Country Music Artists Lee Roy Parnell & Lisa Stewart Discuss Life 'On the Road'

Lee Roy Parnell grew up in Texas, surrounded by Country Music royalty. His father was great friends with the legendary Texas Swing fiddle player and bandleader, Bob Wills. Parnell is also cousins with Americana singer/songwriter, Robert Earl Keen. As a teenager, Parnell began his music career as a drummer before picking up the guitar. The young musician spent a decade playing in the bars, dance halls, and honkytonks of Texas before making the move to Music City in 1987 as a songwriter. He quickly parlayed his singing ability with his tremendous slide guitar skills, which created his own identifiable sound and stretched the boundaries of Country Music.  Parnell continues to tour and tear the roof off of theatres and electrify festivals. He is passionate about his songwriting and most recently his Blackberry Smoke cut, "Good One Comin' On," which as featured on the hit TV series, "Yellowstone." Mississippi native Lisa Stewart sings with Parnell, yet her incredible talent stretches into recording voiceovers and acting. Like Parnell, Stewart began performing at an early age by singing in church, eventually moving to Nashville in 1987 to attend Belmont University on the Roy Acuff scholarship.   Stewart earned her stripes in the music industry by playing clubs in Nashville while a full-time student. After a demo session with Byron Gallimore, she landed a contract with BNA Records. Besides promoting her singing career, Stewart hosted several nationally syndicated and cable entertainment news shows while balancing her touring career. She has shared the stage with artists as diverse as Lenny Kravitz to Kenny Rogers. And she has shared the silver screen with Oscar winners Gwynneth Paltrow and Melissa Leo.   The young singer put her career on hold for several years when she married former Little Texas band member, Brady Seals, in 2002. After divorcing in 2018, Stewart has been touring with Parnell. I interviewed Parnell and Stewart via phone in May of this year after they were forced to cancel performances due to the coronavirus pandemic. I first saw this duo in April of 2019 when they performed at City Winery in Nashville at a benefit concert for fellow singer/songwriter, John Berry. Parnell and Stewart, who are raising young children from previous marriages, discuss their individual musical backgrounds and how their combined love of singing and performing has brought their careers together.

Cadillac Jack - My Second Act

Welcome to Hustle with Bill Rawl- oh, wait. Wrong one. We’re here at the Cadillac Jack: My Second Act (a semi-music music podcast) just like we are every Tuesday and Thursday. Donna went skiing last week. It wasn’t in the mountains, or even intentional. It happened while she was out walking Caddy’s favorite child (see last episode). Caddy and Donna have been obsessed with Lee Roy Parnell for a long time. So much so that they used to try and get radio shows to book him for parties. That plan never came to fruition but Bill Gentry saved the day with a Lee Roy show in Gainesville. On the next segment the show covers a few up and coming country projects. There is a lot of secrecy surrounding one of them but Caddy has a bit of insider information. On an “unrelated” note, the segment also covers a new tape from Keith Urban that is set for a September release. Do your kids drive? If so, what are your car rules? Caddy and Donna give their answers and talk about the driving aspect of parenting. Naturally that leads into a trip down Whips and Rides memory lane. Caddy used to have a sunroof and a CB whip antenna. Donna asks if his handle was “Crusty.” It’s a short segment. Donna has found a cure for her plantar fasciitis. The solution can also help with sleep, anxiety and body aches. It’s a big part of the show and we’re excited to share. Caddy gets to end the segment by saying something he’s been waiting for years to say. “Drop in, drop my name and score a free edible.” Donna and Caddy have been preparing for classes to start. Well, Donna has. Caddy actually finds out about school policies on the show today. Donna has a few ideas for how educators can help students grow in these new conditions. We get an Appy this week! Donna’s segment helps families (especially kids) budget and learn financial responsibility. In your life, you will be lucky to have three people that you can absolutely count on. For Donna and Caddy, one of those people has been Norm Schrutt, who passed away last week. The last segment today is a brief reflection of Norm and some of his impacts. Norm was President of ABC Radio and hired Caddy when he was 19. Then he gave Donna her big shot in Atlanta.  Without a doubt, the Choates wouldn’t be where they are today without him.

THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast

Today’s episode features a true Texas Songwriting Legend: Ray Wylie Hubbard. For those who follow Texas and Red Dirt Music you are almost certainly familiar with Ray.  He’s a legend in the scene and tons of artists have covered his material.  Many artists look at their chance just to co-write with Ray as a pinnacle in their careers. Known for his bar-room sing-along anthem, Red Neck Mother, Ray started gaining notoriety in the 70’s when Jerry Jeff Walker made the tune a main-stay for dark, smoky honky-tonks.  Then, over the years he also became known for penning other great signature songs like “Snake Farm”, recorded by podcast alum Paul Thorn, as well as “I Wanna Rock n Roll” recorded by Red Dirt legends in their own right, Cross Canadian Ragweed. One of my favorite songs that pays homage to Ray is the song “Good One Comin On” recorded by Blackberry Smoke and Trent Wilmon, and written by David Lee Murphy, Gary Nicholson, and Lee Roy Parnell. We get into Ray’s backstory in the episode and he takes us all the way from his start during the Cowboy/Hippie movement in Austin revolving around the Armidillo World Headquarters, us to his most recent projects featuring performances with names like Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, Don Was, Chris Robinson and Ashley McBryde. If you haven’t checked out the YouTube video of the song “Bad Trick” here’s the LINK. I know Carly and I were both honored to have this chance to interview Ray. Chasing The Blues

On this episode of Chasing the Blues Podcast (Season 2/Episode 6) Tom catches up with guitarist Seth James, who makes his second appearance on the podcast. About Seth James: Authenticity and originality don’t always make for the most compatible bedfellows. Indeed, paying reverence to one’s roots sometimes moots the possibility of finding contemporary credence. Happily though, in the case of the Texas born and bred singer/songwriter Seth James, all those elements find equal footing. That’s especially evident with the release of Good Life, James’ new album, a rugged and unabashedly assertive blend of blues, country, roots, rock, and Americana. From the sassy strut of opening track “Brother” and the loping rhythms of the catchy and danceable “That’s How You Do It,” to the soulful sentiment of “Little Angel” and the assertive strains of “The Time I Love the Most,” the twelve song set runs a gamut of heartfelt emotion filtered through unfaltering conviction and homespun appeal. Produced and mixed by Kevin McKendree (Little Richard, Etta James, Sean Chambers), and recorded at The Rock House in Franklin, Tennessee, Good Life resonates with an honesty and integrity that could have only been spawned by someone who’s known the toils and triumphs spawned in America’s heartland. James sums up those sentiments in the title track itself. Written with Kevin McKendree and Bob Britt, the song represents the emotion imbued in the album overall. “It was important to me that this album had an overall positive feel,” James explains. “I always found it easy to be dark and brooding, but using happiness is a trick. Of course, it’s pretty easy to write happy when you’re writing with two of your heroes like Kevin and Bob are to me. “This song is a good representation of where I’m at now and where I wanna stay.” On the other hand, the song “I’m Coming Home“ is the album’s oldest entry. It was also written with McKendree. “We wrote it almost 10 years ago,” James recalls. “From that day forward, we both knew we wanted to make an album together. It just took a while for the pieces to fall in place. However, I suspect that anyone who has to travel for living will find a home with this song.” Likewise, James cites the track “Third Generation” as the most personal song of the set. He notes that it was written during an intense period of anger and frustration, and that it was important for him to express those emotions and bring them to the fore. “In the place that I grew up, it’s very common to find that the later generations who inherit the family ranches typically do not share the same work ethic and values of their forefathers,” James says. “Very often, they squabble and argue and ultimately sell off what it took generations to build. This song allowed me to put my finger in those people’s faces. It’s not about the land as much as it is about the kind of person which that lifestyle produces. I don’t believe this world can afford to lose people who share that kind of dedication.”In fact, James knows those values all too well. Born in Fort Worth and raised in the ranch country of West Texas, he comes from a family who knew the rewards that come from drive, determination and hard work. His grandfather was a honky tonk piano player who performed as Tooter Boatman and the Chaparrals in any number of clubs, juke joints and roadhouses in the 40's and 50's. His other grandfather was a Texas Ranger. His father, Tom Moorhouse, founded the Moorhouse Ranch and imbued in his son the values spawned from western tradition. “Growing up, I spent the majority of my life on a horse,” James recalls. “It was the kind of ranch where we would do things the old-fashioned way, whether it was herding the cattle, bringing out the chuckwagon to feed the cowboys, or camping on the trail under the stars. To this day I still prefer to sleep on the ground.” Not surprisingly then, the romantic road stories shared by his forebears had an important influence of James’s decision to pursue his passion. Early on, he taught himself to play guitar, mostly by learning the songs of Lightning Hopkins, Freddy King and Creedence Clearwater Revival. “Years later in college, I had a regular gig at a juke joint called the Big Wheel in Navasota, Texas where Lightning and Mance Lipscomb spent many years,” he remembers. “It was fun to play for their family members and to hear stories from their relatives’ first-hand accounts.” In 1996 Seth got his first Fender Stratocaster and quickly discovered the sheer power and expression that’s possible by playing an electric guitar. “As a young man, I was drawn to the music that was coming out of Lubbock and Fort Worth,” he recalls. “The early influences of Joe Ely, Delbert McClinton, Stephen Bruton, and Doyle Bramhall Sr. ultimately led me too many of the musicians that impacted me later on, such as Frankie Miller and Freddie King.” Over the course of his career, James has had the opportunity to share the stage with many of his heroes, among them, Percy Sledge, Little Feat, Delbert McClinton, Buddy Guy, Tab Benoit, ZZ Top, Little Feat, Lee Roy Parnell, Leon Russell, and Billy Joe Shaver. He’s released three solo albums, most notably 2009’s critically acclaimed effort That Kind of Man. In 2010, he joined forces with Cody Canada and formed The Departed, with whom he spent three years and recorded two albums. Ultimately, he opted to return to his roots and his primary passion, which was to fashion a sound infused with the blues. With Good Life, he’s sums up his satisfaction succinctly.“I never made the decision to be a musician,” James insists. “I just started doing what I loved and it got out of hand. I’ve been doing it ever since.”The results speak for themselves.Lee Zimmerman 2019 http://www.SethJames.comhttp://www.TomTheSuitForst.comhttp://www.ChasingtheBluesPodcast.com
