The link between sleep and epilepsy is powerful, complex, and often overlooked. We know that sleep loss and disruptions can trigger seizures in epileptic patients. We also know that repeated seizures during sleep can fragment sleep and reduce the brain's ability to recover. In this episode, we sit down with Dr Shukla, a neurologist specializing in Epilepsy and Sleep, and discuss the intersection of sleep and epilepsy. We talk about the link between sleep disorders and epilepsy, how doctors diagnose sleep-related issues in epilepsy and why treating sleep problems can be an important part of seizure management. Dr. Garima Shukla is a Professor of Neurology, specializing in Epilepsy and Sleep Medicine; and faculty at the Center for Neuroscience studies at the Queen's University in Kingston, ON, Canada. Her prior appointment was as Professor of Neurology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India. Her research focuses on clinical and neurophysiological aspects of the sleep-epilepsy-cognition interface and epilepsy co-morbidities as well as neurological sleep disorders, particularly phenotypes and course of Restless legs syndrome. Her team is currently investigating the role of wake and sleep high-density EEG source localization in predicting overall epilepsy outcomes (seizure control, cognition and mood). In April 2026, Pope Leo XIV, deep in a public feud with President Trump over the Iran war, made his first trip to Africa. He chose Algeria: the birthplace of Augustine, the spiritual founder of his order. Algeria is demanding reparations from France for 132 years of colonial rule and 1.5 million dead. It's parliament declared French colonization a "state crime" just four months before Leo landed. Before visiting with any Catholics, Leo laid a wreath at an anticolonial martyrs' monument, removed his shoes in one of the world's largest mosques, condemned "neocolonial tendencies" to the diplomatic corps, and honored 19 Catholic martyrs who stayed to serve Algerian Muslims through a civil war that killed 200,000.  The right-wing press logged every stop as an outrage. The Arab press read it as vindication. And the old-school Algerian left noted that papal forgiveness might be easier for France to accept than a reparations bill. Matthew reads the visit through Augustine, historical materialism, liberation theology, and the testament of Christian de Chergé, prior of Tibhirine, who in 1994 wrote about his immanent martyrdom as the insurgents drew near. In his final testament, de Chergé wrote: I well know the contempt with which the Algerians taken as a whole have come to be dismissed. I also know the caricature of Islam that a certain kind of Islamism encourages. It is too easy to put one's conscience at rest by identifying this religion with the forms of fundamentalism of its extremists. For years I felt like I was on somewhat of an island with the very niche topics I tend to write about and follow. Then I met Eddie LaRow. Rarely have I been able to talk with someone in the writing world who sees things so similarly, whether it's how we approach the craft of writing, how we view the world and use the art of words to make sense of it, or how we handle the pressures of promoting our work without getting caught in the comparison trap. Perhaps more importantly, we share similar experiences growing up as Millennials (with the same taste in MySpace-era emo punk rock) and see the world through the same lens of the Christian faith.We also share a heart for Millennials and Gen Z and the plight both generations have experienced into young adulthood. Thanks in part to a lot of shared interests, Eddie and I have gotten to be pretty good friends, especially over the last month or so, and I'm excited to have him on this week's episode of the podcast. In this conversation, we talk all things Millennials and Gen Z, especially navigating adolescence and early adulthood before and after the 2007-2008 housing crisis, which has shaped a lot of our adult lives. We talk about education, the rising cost of things promised to us, and how our view of the American Dream is being redefined. As writers, we talk about where (and if) AI fits into the picture for Christian writing and art, how Gen Z is valuing authenticity more, how parasocial relationships have become the norm for a tech-obsessed culture, and much more.By day, Eddie is an acquisitions editor for Baker Publishing.
