Continua invece a parlare, anche dentro un futuro do

Episode #538: The fifth episode in our five-part series features conversations recorded at the 16th International Burma Studies Conference at Northern Illinois University, where scholars, students, researchers, and practitioners gathered under the theme Dealing with Legacies in Burma. Held in the midst of political upheaval and humanitarian crisis, the conference offered a rare space for open exchange, collective reflection, and connection. Insight Myanmar was welcomed into this setting to record dialogues with a diverse range of attendees, produced in collaboration with NIU's Center for Southeast Asian Studies. With these episodes, we hope to bring listeners into the atmosphere of the gathering and into conversation with the people who continue to shape the field today. Khaing Wai Wai Zaw taught English in Myanmar for eight years, and went to Northern Illinois University for a higher degree in her field. But she also became a research assistant there cataloging artifacts, in particular 228 rare, scared sasi jo ribbons. While having no qualifications in this area, she relied on her Buddhist literacy and background to interpret inscriptions, andensure they have a safe home at the NIU library, at least until her country regains its stability. She also reflects on the political crisis in Myanmar and wrestles with the role monks should play, balancing her own reluctance to criticize with her belief in social responsibility. “I'm a totally different person when I get on stage.” With this feeling, Karen dancer and community leader Hsa Win reflects on how dance preserves his identity. He grew up in a refugee camp in Thailand after his family fled Burma, and later moved to the U.S. Wanting to educate others about his Karen heritage, he began performing traditional dances at community events. Hedescribes competitions, bamboo dances, and the spiritual dances of the thirty-seven nat spirits. Onstage, he feels confident and transformed, adopting the personalities of the spirits he portrays, and American audiences are enthusiastic. He now lives in Ohio, where he teaches dance to Karen youth to help them “embrace their identity” and keep their culture alive. Researcher and artist Ni Ni Win describes how Burmese marionettes have become a powerful link to her identity now that she lives in America. She explains that puppetry developed to portray particularly sacred Jataka Tales that humans were not permitted to depict. Under royal patronage, puppet shows became very popular; the marionettes conveyed religious teachings, history, and even political concerns, since civilians sometimes asked puppeteers to voice criticisms through the puppets. This art form declined when the monarchy was dismantled by the British, and then as other forms of entertainment became increasingly popular. Amy also draws inspiration from pagoda engravings, known as gnot patterns, which are used on traditional Burmese textiles as well. Living abroad has increased her appreciation for these traditions, which help her stay connected to her homeland.

Inside "Idling High" with Artist Jake Cassman Jake Cassman refuses to make false choices. He crafts sharp, thought-provoking lyrics rooted in the Americana tradition without losing the drive and edge of indie rock. Onstage, he moves effortlessly between dark, gut-busting humor and disarming vulnerability. Shaped both by California dreams and east coast grit, Cassman arrives with his remarkable debut solo album Idling High—a record that channels “a sound that feels both urgent and timeless, recalling Tom Petty, Counting Crows, and Jason Isbell” (Rock The Pigeon).Tags:podcast for creatives, creative podcast, podcast creator interviews, professional podcast, creative podcasts, podcast host interviews, creative podcast ideas,ArtistComedianMusicMusicianLinks:https://www.jakecassman.com/musicSupport PEG by checking out our Sponsors:Download and use Newsly for free now from www.newsly.me or from the link in the description, and use promo code “GHOST” and receive a 1-month free premium subscription. The best tool for getting podcast guests:https://podmatch.com/signup/phantomelectricghostSubscribe to our Instagram for exclusive content:https://www.instagram.com/expansive_sound_experiments/Subscribe to our YouTube https://youtube.com/@phantomelectricghost?si=rEyT56WQvDsAoRprRSShttps://anchor.fm/s/3b31908/podcast/rssSubstackhttps://substack.com/@phantomelectricghost?utm_source=edit-profile-page

Justin is joined in this episode by Helene de Roux, writer and director of "Welcoming Grace," a new short film made to promote ZEISS's Aatma camera lenses, but featuring a narrative built around two Elvis fans meeting for the first time in real life and forming a bond despite many differences and minor obstacles. Helene is a fellow listener and patron of TCBCast, you'll have heard her words before on the show as she's written in a few times, but now you'll get to hear her voice as they geek out about Elvis and filmmaking. She even plays a round of Elvis trivia! It's highly recommended that you give "Welcoming Grace" a watch, free on YouTube, to get the most enjoyment out of that part of the discussion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjRWmSfH_Sg For Song of the Week, Helene circles back to one that Gurdip covered way back in 2018 to provide greater context for and history behind "Let It Be Me," the English language version of Gilbert Becaud's "Je t'appartiens" made famous by the Everly Brothers and featured in Elvis' setlist (and the "On Stage" album!) in 1970. Similarly, I dug into Elvis' hit version of "My Boy," the localization of Claude Francois' 1970 single "Parce que je t'aime mon enfant" and originally recorded in English by Richard Harris. Send us Fan MailYou pull into the driveway after a full day. Patients, staff, meetings, inbox, all of it. You open the door and immediately there are more people who need something from you. And you have nothing left.If you have ever sat in your car in the driveway just a little longer than you needed to, you are not broken. You are not someone who doesn't love the people waiting for you inside. You are someone who has been on stage all day with no time off stage. And today we are going to fix that. What we cover in this episode:On Stage vs. Off Stage: What It Actually MeansOn stage is any time your energy is going outward. You are performing in some kind of role, whether that is physician, leader, parent, partner, or PTA secretary. It includes clinic, charting, inbox, staff interactions, and yes, family time counts too if you are managing emotions and playing a role.Off stage is genuine time where there is no performance element. You are just a human being allowed to exist. A solo walk, reading for pleasure, crafting, time with friends who know all your secrets and expect nothing from you. It is not scrolling social media while you tell yourself you are resting. It is actual restoration. The Gray ZoneSome time feels like it should be off stage but is actually draining you. Social media is the big one. If you are reaching for your phone out of habit and putting it down feeling worse, that is gray zone time, not off stage time. We have to be honest about this or the audit will not work.Introversion, Extroversion, and What You Actually NeedThis is a spectrum, not a binary. More introverted physicians need quiet solo time to recharge. More extroverted physicians might actually need more time with people they genuinely choose, not just the people at work. Neither is better. Both require intention. And where you fall on that spectrum can shift depending on stress, illness, life season, and what you are carrying right now.The AuditThis is a doing episode. Here is what we are walking through together:Step 1: Map one to two weeks of your actual schedule. One week if your schedule is fixed. Two or more if you are a hospitalist, nocturnist, or work variable hours. Include work time AND home time. Both matter.Step 2: Label everything. On stage, off stage, or gray zone. Be honest. Family time that feels like a performance goes in the on stage column even if you love your family deeply.Step 3: Look at the ratio. Where is your off stage time? Is there any? How does that balance feel?Step 4: Reflect. Does this match what you actually need given where you are on the introversion/extroversion spectrum? What would need to shift, even just slightly, to give you more of what you need?Making Changes Without Flipping the TableSmall shifts create sustainable change. Before you decide you need to leave medicine, consider whether you have actually had any off stage time lately. Not as a reason to stay if you truly need to go, but because we do not make our best decisions from a completely depleted state. Protect one or two off stage blocks per week. You tighten your gig prep by treating every show like a pro mission: build rock-solid routines, line-check your gear and apps, and know your insurance, splitter snake, setlist, click, and IEM plan before you ever hit the stage. You walk into a wedding or club already covered with proper liability, routing, charts, and monitoring so you can stop worrying about logistics and start playing the room. Always Be Performing. Onstage, you think like a storyteller, not just a musician: you record full shows to review your banter and flow, you decide when the click helps and when to ditch it, and you refine what makes your band distinctive so people remember your name and feel the FOMO. Offstage, you act like a lab: you binge showcases at events like SXSW, steal the best ideas, use AI to critique rehearsals, and keep your gig bag dialed so every performance gets sharper, louder, and more undeniable. 00:00:00 Gig Gab 527 – Monday, March 30th, 2026 March 30th: Take a Walk in the Park Day 00:01:29 What is your gig prep process? 00:06:55 Skylar-How does a band get a certificate of insurance for a wedding gig? Rosamund Pike! What a woman. Famed for her portrayals of razor-sharp, morally complex and deliciously unpredictable characters, she brings that same intriguing duality to this conversation. Thoughtful and quietly rebellious, she reflects on a career that has defied neat narratives from the very beginning. After taking a year out from studying English at University of Oxford to pursue acting, she graduated and stepped straight into the global spotlight as Bond girl Miranda Frost in Die Another Day. From there came a string of unforgettable movies: Pride & Prejudice, Jack Reacher, A Private War and Saltburn. Her chilling performance in Gone Girl earned her an Oscar nomination and she took home a Golden Globe for I Care a Lot. In 2025, she returned to the stage for the first time in 15 years in the National Theatre's production of Inter Alia. In this episode, she talks about her ‘failure' to get married, the realities of raising two sons and her decision not to read a single review of her work for the past 25 years. Plus why she's ‘constantly in battle' with her own fear, her failure to be an action movie hero, her miserable attempt to cook a rabbit and whether or not she's ‘cool'. ✨ IN THIS EPISODE: 00:00 Intro 03:18 No reviews rule 06:57 Early perfectionism and stage craft 07:58 Inter Alia and modern womanhood 10:09 Luminate meditation mask 12:42 Failure to learn Chinese 19:09 Onstage mishaps and acting roles 28:59 What Cool Really Means 29:26 Cool Girl vs Amy 32:21 Failing at Being An Action Star 36:52 Failure to Get Married 45:17 Mothering Two Boys 47:28 Smells and Teen Hygiene 48:44 Rabbit Dinner and Being Enough
In this episode of On Stage, Howie Nuchow, Managing Director at Creative Artists Agency and Co-Head of CAA Sports, joins Abraham Madkour, Publisher & Executive Editor of Sports Business Journal, for a conversation about the expanding role of capital, advisory, and global strategy in sports. Recorded on February 23, 2026, at SBJ's National Sports Forum, the discussion highlights how firms like CAA are operating far beyond traditional representation by helping shape ownership structures, league investments, and strategic partnerships across the industry. During the conversation, Nuchow explores: The Rise of Sports Private Equity: Why institutional capital is flowing into sports and what it means for teams, leagues, and investors. CAA's Expanding Role: How the agency advises ownership groups, investors, and global sports properties. The Evolution of Representation: How modern agencies operate at the intersection of talent, media, capital, and strategy. Global Opportunities: Where sports investment is growing and how international markets factor into the next wave of deals. Lessons in Leadership: What it takes to navigate a rapidly evolving sports business landscape. It's a sharp, strategic look at how the financial architecture of sports is changing and the executives helping shape that transformation. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. A tour can change your clock, your appetite, and your sense of scale. Ours did all three. We flew across the Pacific in those elusive lie-flat pods, learned how to live inside a tiny sky room, then stepped into cities that start the party early and shut it down by midnight. Auckland turned into a nightly blackjack table with our road crew. Sydney strapped us to the top of the Harbour Bridge where the wind reminds you that steel has a heartbeat. We almost did the shark “dive” until we realized it was an aquarium nurse-shark swim—so we're saving the real cage for Perth.Onstage, Australia sang back. That's the magic of streaming meeting sweat and lights—songs born in Nashville echoing across arenas a hemisphere away. We discovered a cultural twist: seated sections stay seated out of courtesy, even while GA goes wild, so we're already scheming ways to design spaces that invite everyone to stand without guilt. The food? Fresh. The coffee? Espresso or nothing. Without omnipresent iPad tip prompts, generosity felt like choice, not pressure, and that small shift changed the tone of a day. Yes, we ate kangaroo on a kebab. Yes, it was good.Between shows, the news cut through: war with Iran. We wrestled with the same mix of dread, resolve, and hope you probably felt. We watched our pilots outfly missiles and felt awe and sorrow at once. It's messy to hold certainty and doubt in the same breath, but that's where we lived—on a bridge above Sydney, in a quiet hotel bar in Auckland, and backstage listening to a crowd finish a chorus we started years ago. Also, a 22-hour flight turned into a stand-off over a pod seat, and it became a lesson in boundaries: sometimes keeping your spot is the kindest thing you can do for your sanity. If you're here for tour stories, coffee talk, crowd psychology, or a grounded take on a loud headline, you'll feel at home. What happens when one of the most disciplined bodies in the world can't do the one thing everyone assumes it should? On this episode -- one of our most downloaded of all time -- Ali sits down with Mathilde Froustey, principal dancer at the San Francisco Ballet and widely considered one of the most extraordinary dancers in the world.Born in Bordeaux, France, Mathilde began dancing at just nine years old, training at the prestigious Marseille National School of Ballet and the Paris Opera Ballet School before rising to the top of the international ballet world. Onstage, her body is her instrument — powerful, precise, and seemingly unstoppable. But behind the curtain, Mathilde has been fighting battles that almost no one in the dance world talks about. In this candid and emotional conversation, she opens up for the first time about her experience with infertility — a subject she says remains deeply taboo in professional dance. Mathilde shares what it was like to go through IVF while performing at the highest level, navigating intense body scrutiny, and hearing painful comments about her appearance during one of the most vulnerable periods of her life. She also talks about her past struggle with an eating disorder, the pressure dancers face to maintain a certain body type, and the silent toll of trying to build a family inside a culture that rarely makes space for it.“In the dance world, infertility is a taboo subject,” Mathilde says. Not anymore. This is a powerful conversation about perfection, pressure, and what it means to reclaim your body — both onstage and off.EPISODE SPONSORS: THE WORK OF ART BOOK SERIESAli's Children's Book Series about IVF, IUI and Family Building Through Assisted Reproductive Technology https://www.infertileafgroup.com/booksThe 3-book bundle is now just $49 (normally $79)!The latest book in the Work of ART series, “You Are a Work of ART," is for every kiddo born through ART -- and the people who love them.PHERDALIG: @pherdal_sciencePherDal is the world's first and only FDA-cleared, sterile, at-home insemination kit designed to help people build their families in the comfort of home. Cat & Cloud Podcast Cat & Cloud Coffee www.catandcloud.com/ On-Stage, Off-Stage: Why Owners Stand in Line (And Other Hospitality Go's & No-Go's) – Ep #439 Summary In this episode, Jared, Chris, and Casey riff on authenticity and then dig into hospitality as “on-stage vs off-stage” work—treating a café like a live performance where everything guests see, hear, and feel (cleanliness, order, smell, noise, staff energy) shapes the experience before they even taste the coffee. They unpack “clubhousing” as a major no-go—when staff get lost in their own conversations or tasks and fail to include guests—and argue that the goal isn't robotic service but a shared framework that helps people be more present and human. A key leadership practice is cafe/restaurant owners standing in line and experiencing the business like a guest to spot friction and keep perspective. Chris closes with his biggest hospitality deal-breakers: letting the register conversation drag while a line builds, ignoring “hovering” guests who need help, and creating perceived unavailability—because being seen and acknowledged is often the difference between a tense room and a great one. One of my teachers often used to say that no matter what you're playing, when you're on stage, the beginning of a piece is always the hardest part. Not because the opening is more difficult technically, but because we've generally been sitting around for a little while, so we're feeling kind of cold, a little disconnected from our instrument, and nervous and jittery. And it often takes us a minute or two to get warmed up and really hit our stride. Which might not be the end of the world if you're playing a 30-minute concerto. But if it's an audition that only lasts a few minutes, this “warm-up” period can feel like a really long (and crappy) couple minutes. Is there something we can do to be more accurate right from the start, and skip that “settling-in” period? (spoiler alert - yes, there is
