What do late-night comedy writers know about trust, influence, and human connection that most business leaders don't? In this episode of Truth, Lies & Work, we're joined by Beth Sherman — a seven-time Emmy-winning comedy writer who spent three decades in Hollywood writers' rooms before taking what she learned into the world of business. Beth has written for The Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Ellen, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the Oscars. Today, she works with leaders, sales teams, and organisations who want to build trust quickly, communicate with confidence, and connect more humanly at work. This is not about telling jokes in meetings. It's about understanding why humour works, how truth creates connection, and why the most effective communicators are the most observant — not the funniest. What you'll learn in this episode Why “truth is funny” — and what that reveals about trust and rapport The difference between self-awareness and self-deprecation (and why confusing the two damages credibility) How humour creates psychological safety without undermining authority Why being human matters more as work becomes more automated and AI-driven How observational humour helps in sales, leadership, presentations, and difficult conversations Why you don't need to be funny — you need to be emotionally intelligent and observant Beth explains how comedians build instant rapport with strangers, and why those same principles are powerful in boardrooms, client meetings, and tense workplace moments. Why this matters for leaders and teams In a world where people can buy similar products, services, and solutions anywhere, relationships are the differentiator. Humour, when used properly, signals: Awareness of the room Confidence without ego Safety without softness Humanity without oversharing Beth's work shows that humour isn't about performance. It's about connection — and connection is the foundation of trust, influence, and persuasion at work. About our guest Beth Sherman is a comedian, keynote speaker, and communication expert. She spent over 30 years writing comedy at the highest level before translating those principles into practical tools for business leaders. Her upcoming book is published by Blue Goat Books.
Tom Wilson (Back to the Future, SpongeBob SquarePants) joins us for a deeply reflective, funny, and unexpectedly moving conversation about legacy, identity, and the long shadow of iconic roles. Tom opens up about the weight of Back to the Future, how fame can both elevate and trap an artist, and why learning to respect his own craft mattered more than applause. He shares vivid stories from the early stand up comedy scene alongside Seinfeld, Leno, and Reiser, his experiences working with Crispin Glover and Michael J Fox, and the personal philosophy that helped him build a grounded life beyond Hollywood expectations. Jay Leno keeps the stories coming, talking about the near-miss of getting a statue in his honor and diving into the very real headache of catalytic converter thefts. It’s classic Jay—self-deprecating, sharp, and oddly informative. Then Tim opens up the phones for a full-blown nostalgia trip as listeners call in to relive their memories from Calway Jam. From unforgettable performances to teenage shenanigans, the calls keep rolling with stories of fun, freedom, and the creative ways people managed to outsmart their parents just to be there.Legendary guests, listener memories, and concert chaos—this Best Of perfectly captures the spirit of ringing in the New Year together.
The New Year fun continues with an unforgettable run of stories from Jay Leno. Jay recounts the terrifying moment he was caught in a car fire, sharing firsthand what went wrong and how it all unfolded. He then rewinds to his early days in Los Angeles, talking about arriving in town, scraping by, and the very first car that helped him get around Hollywood.Things get even more personal when Jay admits to accidentally losing Barack Obama’s phone number after trying a little too hard to play it cool. And in true Leno fashion, the segment wraps with a perfectly absurd story about getting unintentionally swept into a parade… all while just trying to grab a slice of pizza.Car fires, Hollywood beginnings, presidential mishaps, and parade chaos—this Best Of is a masterclass in legendary storytelling.
The car talk continues with Jay Leno as Tim confidently proves he knows his way around an engine, going toe-to-toe on Cadillacs and car culture with one of the ultimate automotive experts. From horsepower to history, it’s peak gearhead energy. Then Tim drops a casual mind-blower, explaining that we’re technically living in an ice age—and somehow no one ever mentions it. The show lightens up with Tim and Cro swapping classic Costco adventures, from impulse buys to warehouse chaos. And to wrap it up, Tim and Mark trade unforgettable travel stories, sharing the misadventures, mishaps, and unexpected moments that only happen on the road.Cars, climate curveballs, bulk shopping, and travel tales—this Best Of keeps the laughs rolling into the New Year.
Tim kicks things off with a surprisingly passionate debate on trash etiquette—specifically, whether it’s ever okay to toss your garbage into someone else’s bin. The crew weighs in, and lines are definitely drawn. Then Tim takes a nostalgic trip back to the days of calling girls on the phone to make a date, revisiting the nerves, the landlines, and the art of not sounding like a total dork. The conversation loosens up as everyone recalls the last time they caught a truly good buzz, swapping stories about drinks, tolerance, and knowing when to stop. And to top it off, automotive royalty Jay Leno drops by to sing the praises of Cadillac, breaking down why the brand still delivers one of the most fun and underrated driving experiences out there.Manners, memories, mild intoxication, and muscle cars—this Best Of hits every gear.
With seven show left before Mark Garrow turns out the lights he turns back the pages of time to 2005 and a get together at Indy with Jeff Gordon and comedian Jay Leno. Then he throws back to 1995 when the late Dale Earnhardt joked about his tactics in his one and only Sonoma win.

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, the conversation starts with watches, traditions, and how certain design ideas get passed around as fact, even when no one fully agrees on where they came from. From there, things quickly drift into watch etiquette, including whether guilloché is meant to be admired quietly or kept well away from people with curious fingers. The crew dives into Jay Leno's approach to watch collecting, why curiosity matters more than status, and how a non-Cartier Tank can sometimes be more interesting than chasing the usual icons. As the discussion rolls on, Rick, Ariel, David, and Ripley tackle new releases, retail realities, and brand decisions that feel increasingly hard to defend, eventually landing on the kind of strong watch opinions that might earn you a long conversation with Swiss passport control. (Time for a social media audit before the next trip to Geneva.) By the end, the lines between serious watch talk and end-of-year-chaos completely blur, making getting banned from Switzerland feel less like a risk and more like part of the job.To check out the ABTW Shop where you can see our products inspired by our love of Horology:- Shop ABTW - https://store.ablogtowatch.com/To keep updated with everything Superlative, aBlogtoWatch Weekly, and aBlogtoWatch, check us out on:- Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ablogtowatch/- Website - https://www.ablogtowatch.com/- Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/aBlogtoWatch If you enjoy the show please Subscribe, Rate, and Review!
The show covered a developing investigation into suspicious items found in Glendale, as well as a motorcycle officer involved in an accident with injuries in Garden Grove. A “WHIP” segment touched on Elon Musk’s net worth. Mark Thompson talked about doing voiceover work for an NFL commercial. Tim shared the story of one of his framed newspaper articles that had been auctioned off years ago and unexpectedly made its way back. Mark also mentioned a Huell Howser photo displayed on his nightstand. Conway recalled giving Jay Leno his headshot to hang in Leno’s garage, along with a funny story from a Comedy & Magic Club show in Hermosa Beach. The conversation drifted to another humorous anecdote involving the song “American Pie.” The hour wrapped up with discussion about whether “American Pie” has ever been covered by other artists, noting that Don McLean often performed the song twice during his concerts. The segment ended with talk about an Adam Carolla vlog in which Carolla humorously tells people at Home Depot that their project ideas aren’t going to work. We kick things off with Dr. Drew, diving into a big conversation about Tylenol, vaccines, autism, and the pandemic — no topic is off limits. That guiding principle shapes everything about the vehicle's radical design. As Steve Fambro explained in today's episode, “Aptera is about using the least amount of energy to go from point A to point B,” emphasizing that efficiency isn't a feature of the car, it is the car.Steve, Aptera's co CEO and co founder, walked through the engineering mindset that makes their approach unique. As an electrical engineer, he thinks in terms of systems and losses, so the team engineered the vehicle from the ground up to minimize drag and weight. The result is a three wheeled, solar integrated EV that consumes just 100 watt hours per mile, less than half of what even skilled hypermiling drivers typically achieve. Steve put it simply: “The low drag, the lightweight, and the integrated solar... those are the three parts of the equation to give it that magic.”As reservation holders continue to express enthusiasm, Steve's real world perspective keeps the story grounded. The team is focused on scaling responsibly, leaning on experienced partners like Roush to engineer critical elements for mass production. Aptera's early journey wasn't linear. Steve and his co founder Chris faced misalignment with hired leadership and ultimately watched the original company collapse while they pursued other ventures. Returning with lessons learned, new battery capabilities, and a stronger market, they rebuilt Aptera on firmer foundations.Today the world is meeting them where they are. Their reservation count exceeded early expectations almost overnight. Media attention, including a recent appearance on Jay Leno's show, signaled not just curiosity but genuine enthusiasm. The story of Aptera represents more than another EV. It reflects a reframing of what efficient transportation can look like and illustrates how a focused engineering question can lead to reshaping an entire market.tl;dr:Aptera Motors is revolutionizing EVs with hyper-efficient, solar-powered vehicles designed for maximum energy efficiency. The vehicle's aerodynamic shape and lightweight materials minimize drag and energy consumption.Aptera's integrated solar panels can add up to 40 miles of range per day.Thousands of preorders signal strong demand as Aptera prepares for production next year.Steve Fambro's focus on efficiency and perseverance drives Aptera's mission for sustainable transportation. How to Develop Self-Deprivation As a SuperpowerSteve Fambro's superpower is his ability to deprive himself of comforts for as long as necessary to finish a job. Drawing from his military experience, Steve shared, “I don't let any discomfort… be a factor in my performance.” He described how he can work in extreme heat or go without sleep, food, or rest when required. This skill allows him to focus on achieving his goals without distraction, no matter the challenges.Steve recounted how this superpower helped him during Aptera's early days, as well as in his previous ventures. For example, while working in the Middle East, he endured long hours in 120-degree heat alongside a construction crew, refusing to let discomfort slow him down. His willingness to push himself, even in challenging conditions, has been key to his success.Tips for Developing the Superpower:Practice self-discipline by intentionally depriving yourself of small comforts periodically.Embrace stoic philosophy to build mental resilience and adaptability.Focus on your goals rather than temporary discomfort to stay motivated.Learn from experiences that push you outside your comfort zone, such as travel or challenging work conditions.By following Steve's example and advice, you can make self-deprivation a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileSteve Fambro (he/him):co-CEO/Founder, Aptera MotorsAbout Aptera Motors: Aptera's mission is to create the most efficient transportation on the planet. Jay Leno is one of the most recognizable figures in comedy and late night, hosting The Tonight Show for a combined two decades. But in recent years, his life has shifted into a quieter, more intimate chapter as he cares for his wife Mavis, who was diagnosed with dementia in 2024. Jay opens up to Hoda about what it means to support the woman who stood beside him throughout his career and her small glimmers of memory and recognition that mean everything. He reflects on their love story, the humor they still find in simple moments and how this chapter has revealed a deeper purpose built on patience, tenderness, and grace. Concerns grow as the fourth storm in a week hits Southern California, bringing flood advisories and renewed worry for burn-scar areas and vulnerable foothill communities like Altadena. Michael Monks weighs in on the troubled Dodger Stadium gondola project, now facing turbulence as Los Angeles officials look to potentially halt it. The proposed $500 million aerial tramway would connect the stadium to Union Station, aiming to ease game-day traffic. Supporters argue it would reduce congestion, while critics cite studies showing minimal impact on car use. Jay Leno opens up about his 45-year marriage and the emotional challenges of wife Mavis’ declining health due to dementia, sharing that he still “melts” when she looks at him despite the difficult journey. As the storm moves through SoCal, another headline pops: Carmel, California considers banning pickleball in a city park after rising noise complaints from nearby residents.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Jay Leno joins the conversation as deputies track a Jeep reported stolen. The show rolls into a big Disney giveaway, plus a wild story of a SoCal couple hit with an $8,000 utility bill. Sizzler is revamping as the nostalgic ’80s chain pushes for a full comeback. They also break down the skyrocketing cost to rebuild the Francis Scott Key Bridge—now estimated between $4.3 and $5.2 billion, more than double earlier projections. Mark highlights the new UCI all-electric hospital opening in December 2025, the first of its kind in the nation, noting he was an early adopter of solar. And Conway ends the hour with some classic “cold-slaps” at Thompson—insults, yes, but allegedly helpful. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A tragic morning in Dana Point where a 13-year-old boy was killed on his way to school by a suspected DUI hit-and-run driver. The show then covers LAPD response times, with Tim sharing a wild story about a dog biting the private parts off a thief. LAPD Officer Jason Jacobson joins to discuss gun safety and his Police Unity Tour GoFundMe, later explaining what motor cops deal with in heavy rain. Jay Leno calls in and pledges $5,000 to support the Police Unity Tour. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
