What twelve songs would sustain you if you were stranded on a desert island for the rest of your life? Matt Sidhom finally reveals his carefully curated Desert Island Mix—a musical journey that offers surprising insights into his life, memories, and what matters most. The mix opens with deeply personal selections: his wedding dance song Dave Matthews' "So Damn Lucky" and George Strait's touching "Love Without End" representing Matt's love for his children. From there, the musical landscape expands dramatically to include Bruce Springsteen's inspiring live rendition of "Growing Up," Billy Joel's cinematic "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant," and Kool Moe Dee's lyrically brilliant "I Go to Work."Each song serves a specific purpose for island survival: Badly Drawn Boy's subtle Christmas track "Donna and Blitzen" to mark the passage of time, Weezer's defiant "Pork and Beans" as a soundtrack for learning survival skills, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer's experimental "Carnival 9" for when isolation hallucinations might set in. The philosophical questions posed in The Killers' "Human" ("Are we human or are we dancer?") take on new meaning in extended solitude. What makes this episode fascinating isn't just the diverse musical selections spanning rock, country, rap, and prog—it's the window these choices open into Matt's values, memories, and what brings comfort in isolation. The perfectly chosen closing track, The Rolling Stones' "Waiting on a Friend," captures the ultimate desert island emotion. As you listen, you'll inevitably wonder: what songs would make your own Desert Island Mix? What music would you choose to represent your life if everything else was stripped away? The hosts later explore fostering pets, Farm Aid 40 with Willie Nelson and friends, navigating weird dreams about casinos, and what skill they'd love to master (spoiler: musical dreams abound!). They cap off the episode with salt survival facts (seriously, it does everything), Gen Z dating trends, karaoke fails, and the hardest jobs on Earth. A balanced blend of community, comedy, and curiosity!

Dale Earnhardt Jr. welcomes Top-40 music artist and longtime NASCAR fan Edwin McCain to the Download to chat about his journey from a humble, local music scene to writing one of the most memorable songs in history. Edwin also shares how Dale Jr.'s 2001 July Daytona win had a profound impact on his life. After being born in Greenville, South Carolina, Edwin was put up for adoption but admits he has never sought out much information about his biological mother. Dale and Edwin relate on the experience of asking parents hard questions at the end of their lives to get the real picture of their upbringing. Edwin explains he began playing music at an early age after struggling in school due to dyslexia. He and Dale chat about the music they enjoyed growing up and what musicians were a major influence on Edwin, and led him to pick up a guitar.Edwin gives listeners an idea of what the music scene was like in the mid-90s, when he, Dave Matthews and Hootie and the Blowfish were finding their way to major record label contracts. Edwin admits that his signing was largely thanks to the kindness of Hootie, who asked Atlantic Records to give him a shot. After an underperforming debut, in part due to Edwin's disconnection from the project, Edwin saved his career with the smash hit “I'll Be,” which remains one of the greatest love songs ever written. Edwin talks candidly about developing an addiction problem and his journey to rehab. Today, he is on the other side of hardship and celebrating the release of his new album “Lucky,” which is his first new release in almost 15 years.Dirty Mo Media is launching a new e-commerce merch line! Previously he spent 2 years as North America President and CCO of Ogilvy, where he helped bring the agency and its clients a new level of relevance. He brought Workday to the Super Bowl, led the team that brought in the Verizon account, and one of the biggest Super Bowl campaigns ever, “Can't B Broken,” featuring Beyonce, and created the most celebrated Super Bowl campaign of 2024, the social & influencer lead "Michael CeraVe," for CeraVe. Chris and his teams have won every award for creativity and effectiveness many times over. He has been included in ADWEEK Best Creatives, the ADWEEK 100, and Business Insider's Most Creative People in Advertising. Notes: Cold Emails: Be specific in your praise and specific in your ask. The lame "Can I pick your brain" type emails get deleted and ignored because they aren't specific. You never need permission to take responsibility. Chris learned this from Ed Catmull's book Creativity Inc.… And he's embodied this his entire career. The people who build huge careers take ownership of their own and regularly solve problems and improve their clients' and colleagues' lives. Chris has done this since his early days as an intern. At any level taking on responsibility yourself, unasked, makes you stand out. Competence combined with insane follow-through. For some clients, it takes 50 ideas to get to the one that will work. Creating a culture where the team can share all of their bad ideas safely to get to the one great one. The creative process: Brain dump everything. Purge your brain of everything it has. When you think you're done, you're not. There's more. You have to get it all out. "A lot of creative people aren't fully aware of the process or the structure, they just feel it (Rick Rubin). "When you can see it lift off the page, you feel a sense of mastery over it." Chris's first Super Bowl commercial -- Emerald Nuts. He won it because he was both funny and added the fact that the product provided energy. Most people only covered one part, Chris did both. Push your edges - Chris is like Lionel Messi. He's always walking around in the office, asking questions, looking for ideas, being curious. Then he sees an opportunity and goes for it 100%. Chris has a standing reservation every week at the same restaurant where he meets with a mentor, mentee, or peer to deepen the important relationships in his life. That would be a good idea for us all to do. Chris was pen-pals with Dave Matthews for 8 years. Chris saw that they recorded at Bearsville studios and wrote a letter to Dave there. He also said, "Show up with gifts." He gave Dave a Beatles Bootlegged album. A leader takes what comes and then turns it into an opportunity. The formula is Competence + Insane Follow-Through. How to build relationships: Meet with people in person. Get drunk with them. Do hard work with them. Go through something bad with them. Laugh with them. I got hired from my internship by cold calling Mark Cuban to get him to approve of using his name in an ad. The best ideas are often bad in their first moments, or massively wrong, and then someone flips it or unlocks it. You have to stay on things and play around. I made my first ad by going through a garbage can to learn how to write a script and sending a bunch of Budweiser scripts to my boss. The art of finding an idea on the edge of possible, and the value of going over your skis when on the cusp of greatness - having a stomach for it. I've told a lie to keep things moving on every great campaign I was part of. I learned the best lesson in leadership when we lost our biggest account (Accenture). I put Danny Meyer's mentality into practice, and we took that moment to put the business and clients second and play for each other. Culture carried us. Culture is built by the stories we tell and the behaviors we highlight.

YFTers, it's almost March - somehow we are two months into 2025 already. Anywayyy, this week, Wells brings us up to speed on his new golf themed podcast that just launched called The Vanity Index—so break out those polos and single white leather gloves. Brandi is dealing with ITCHY boobs and she cannot stop touching them. PSA: If you see Brandi at dinner, please remind her to keep her hands off the goods. In the TV corner: Traitors keeps being straight-up Crazytown, USA and TikTok is spiraling over Danielle's dramatics (and those hats), and we are living for it. Meanwhile, The Bachelor races along at Mach 8 (or 9, or maybe 10??) in what feels like the shortest season ever, making it real hard to invest in these so-called love stories. Wells also has a White Lotus theory—what if the monkeys are actually the murderers?
Welcome to Campfire Classics, a Literary Comedy Podcast!! You ever join a cult? Not a cute one like a bookclub, or pilates, or Taylor Swift fans, but one of the scary ones, like Heaven's Gate, or Scientology, or Dave Matthews fans (just kidding Dave, love you!). This week's story give strong culty vibes. Ken picked the story for Heather to read. It's by previous Campfire Classics author Clark Ashton Smith and it's called "The Demon of the Flower". It's a bizarre trip of a story clearly written by a man who would have rather been writing poetry. Your hosts learn a lot of new words, choose a graphic alliterative euphemism, and make juvenile jokes about what the author's name sounds like. "The Demon of the Flower" was published 1933 in Astounding Stories. Extensive research has uncovered no evidence of an active copyright. Email us at 5050artsproduction@gmail.com. Remember to tell five friends to check out Campfire Classics. Like, subscribe, leave a review. Now sit back, light a fire (or even a candle), grab a drink, and enjoy.

Today on Too Opinionated we sit down with multi-Grammy winning keyboardist George Whitty to talk about his new musical endeavour WHAT!!!! In addition to playing live with the likes of The Brecker Brothers, Herbie Hancock, the late David Sanborn and Chaka Khan, as producer and session keyboardist, Whitty's credits include Santana's blockbuster Supernatural (with Dave Matthews), Celine Dion's Falling Into You and These Are Special Times, Hancock's The Imagine Project and hundreds of others. He has won four Grammys for his work on Chaka Khan's The Woman I Am, Randy Brecker's 34th and Lex, Michael Brecker's Tales From the Hudson and the Brecker Bros.' Out of the Loop. Amidst all the searing soul balladry, deep spirituality, insightful and impactful social consciousness and rousing funk on their infectious dual album In the World, legendary, world-wise cats George Whitty and Ellis Hall – collectively pooling their decades of musical passion as Whitty Hall Artistic Team, aka WHAT!!!! - infuse a beloved, inevitable R&B classic into the enticing mix. Driven by Hall's trademark rousing vocals, their fiery, tight groovin' and brass fired twist on Isaac Hayes' co-penned “I Thank You” takes the 1968 Sam & Dave classic to fresh, exciting heights. It's a way for the duo to express gratitude for their incredible individual careers and all the serendipitous events that led them to this epic moment. One of many potential hit singles and film licensing opportunities from the 10-track collection, “Die Living” is a simmering blues-soul anthem whose title came to Whitty out of the blue one day and led him to create a powerfully rhythmic gospel-influenced song with a bit of a raw front porch vibe. Hall's combination of vocals and organ drive the track, and he also adds various guitar tracks. In part inspired by a cool response Willie Nelson once gave a journalist who dared to ask if he would ever think of retiring, “Die Living” offers dynamic food for thought about wringing as much meaningful life experience we can during our time on this planet. WHAT!!!!'s new album In the World releases on February 14th, 2025. Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

Send us a textThis week the Portland-based duo, Wonderly stopped by to discuss their latest album Wolves/ We also talked about the Low Bar Chorale, A new German Opera, and so much more.********Wolves is the culmination of a creative partnership that dates back to 2016. Brunberg and Landsverk debuted Wonderly with a self-titled 2017 collection; the unit continued with the post-pandemic release Story We Tell in 2022 and the covers collection Appropriate 'til Death in 2023. Their film scores have been featured on the soundtracks for the independent films Last Ferry, At the Video Store and other independent features, while their music has been heard as the aforementioned theme song of the New York Times' podcast The Daily and writer Cheryl Strayed's Dear Sugar, as well as on Brunberg's award-winning podcast Roam Schooled.Jim Brunberg was a touring song and dance man for 12 years with the hugely successful rock/harmony/acoustic duo (and sometimes quintet) Box Set, touring with acts ranging from Dave Matthews to Huey Lewis, through the 90s. In 2000, Jim opened a recording studio, turning to the recording and composing world to satisfy his constant hunger for music. He produced and engineered dozens of records for many artists (Storm Large, Kristin Hersh, John Wesley Harding, and countless Portland-based bands) and released a few solo albums before converting the studios into a world-class music venue (Mississippi Studios). This spawned a few larger venues (Revolution Hall and Polaris Hall) where Jim personally built the stages, much of the seating and decor of a family of venues he still co-owns with his business partner Kevin Cradock. Currently, Jim is writing and recording/producing a tragic/comic German Opera, working with some of the classical musicians he has met over the past several years (mostly Oregon Symphony players). The work, "Das Blut" is a satirical, full-fledged production, entirely in German, that takes aim at the rise of a tyrant. It is a nuanced, but completely insurgent take on empathy, power, where our demons come from, and what they eat for dinner. He plans to debut this work, along with a new batch of songs, in 2025.Ben Landsverk is an American composer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist, based in Portland, OR, whose work focuses on social change through music. Hailed as a “prominent Portland composer” (Bloomberg Magazine) and “a unique musical talent” (Willamette Week), he is best known for his work as one half of the duo Wonderly, with musical partner Jim Brunberg. An active session musician, Landsverk has worked with such musical luminaries as Father John Misty, Pink Martini, Smokey Robinson, Van Dyke Parks, Storm Large, and Ruby Friedman Orchestra. From 2003-2015, he was a collaborator and music director with avant-garde performance artist Holcombe Waller and performed at such festivals as Under The Radar (NYC), Festival de Teatro de Curitiba (Brazil), Queer Zagreb (Croatia), Brooklyn Academy of Music (NYC), and Centre Pompidou (Metz and Paris, France). Landsverk is the founder and director of Portland's Low Bar Chorale and of Voices Unlimited, Portland's flagship choir for people with neurodiversity. He spent over 20 years as a professional choral director and singer, specializing in medieval, renaissance, and baroque music. Landsverk is currently working on his first solo album, scheduled for release in early 2025. *******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comFollow us on SocSupport the show

Join Maysoon Zayid as she discusses humor, disability rights, and the resilience of Palestinian identity during a conversation filled with heart and laughter amid conflict. This show is made possible by you! Our year end goal is to raise $50,000, and we are half way there. To become a member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Description: Israel's US-backed war on Gaza has been a mass disabling event. Today's guest says we must create a “viable, accessible future” for the disabled Palestinians we have failed. Maysoon Zayid is a comedian, Princeton Fellow, and unapologetic voice for both disability rights and Palestinian identity. A fierce advocate with cerebral palsy, Zaid proves that the most powerful messages often come from unexpected places and are filled with laughter. She's lost tens of thousands of dollars of contracts for her views, she says, but that hasn't stopped her “making funny during a genocide” on social media all year. And she's shown her followers her home village in Palestine — the best place on earth, she says, despite the onslaught of oppression and violence that her people have endured. Maysoon co-founded the New York Arab American Comedy Festival and the Muslim Funny Fest. Her viral Ted Talk, “I Got 99 Problems...Palsy is Just One,” has been translated into 42 languages, and was one of the most popular talks of 2014. She's the author of “Shiny Misfits”, the new graphic novel that tells the story of Bay Ann, a disabled girl and her cat friend that rock star Dave Matthews narrates for the audiobook. In this conversation filled with heart and humor, hear how comedy shines a light on injustice and serves as a voice of resistance. All that, plus a commentary from Laura on human shields.“As a disabled kid, I liked Palestine a lot more than Jersey . . . I was the only visibly disabled kid in my school growing up. But in Palestine there were other disabled kids and disability wasn't shunned. It wasn't mocked, it wasn't bullied. I grew up in a society that very much believed that disability was a natural part of life . . .” - Maysoon Zayid“I've always used comedy to humanize and educate on disability. And this is the moment because the future of Palestine is disabled and between life and death, there's disability. I don't think it's better to be dead than to be disabled.
