During his trip home this summer, Dan knew he had to sit down with WXPN's Mike Vasilikos. Mike is the mid-day host at WXPN, as well as the host of Homegrown- The XPN Local Show, and a tireless champion of Philadelphia music. Dan and Mike get deep into Mike's upbringing on Long Island, his early love of Dave Matthews, and growing up with a cassette tape at the ready to record his favorite songs off the radio (a definitive elder millennial practice). A chance spotting of a flyer at Towson University for their college radio station got Mike on the air for the first time, and the rest was history. Mike extolls his love of Philadelphia bands like Cosmic Guilt, Te Vista, The Dawn Drapes, Ali Awan, and so many more.  WXPN's annual music festival, XPonential Fest, is September 18-20 at Wiggins Park on Camden Waterfront. In this episode of Seeing Them Live, Charles interviews Alan Rosenberg. Alan is the creator and host of The Alan Rosenberg Show on YouTube, a channel dedicated to his lifelong passion for music. Growing up on Long Island, New York, Alan was introduced to rock and roll at an early age through his older sister, whose bedroom walls were covered in posters of The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and The Allman Brothers. By age 10, Alan was already building what would become a meticulously catalogued collection of over 5,000 albums — all of which he has listened to multiple times. In this episode, Alan takes host Charles Zona through the roots of his obsession, including the typed yearly album lists he kept starting in 1973, a tradition handed down from his sister that eventually evolved into a comprehensive digital database tracking every album he owns, every song on it, its chart position, and the year he acquired it. Alan shares vivid memories from more than five decades of concert-going, starting with his very first show — The Rolling Stones at Madison Square Garden in June 1975, featuring the legendary Lotus Stage and a then-new Ron Wood sitting in as guest guitarist. From there, the conversation moves through highlights including the Stones' massive Steel Wheels Tour at Shea Stadium, a Simon & Garfunkel reunion in Central Park, and what Alan calls perhaps his most purely fun concert experience: seeing The Rolling Stones at the intimate MGM Grand in Las Vegas during the 1999 No Security Tour. A standout moment from the episode is Alan's account of seeing U2 at The Sphere in Las Vegas — a venue he discovered before it became widely known — where the crystal-clear, immersive sound system left him calling it one of the greatest concert experiences of his life. The conversation also covers some of Alan's more disappointing experiences, including a Hackney Diamonds-era Rolling Stones show at MetLife Stadium where the sound quality was, in his words, "atrocious," and a Van Halen reunion show at Jones Beach that failed to deliver. You've maybe heard that during an accident, time slows. Truth is, it's an illusion. Your brain flips into high-alert, and processes visual information in way higher detail, which makes the experience feel longer. Of all the episodes and stories we've shared on this show before, this is the one story you would absolutely not want to appreciate in high-detail slow-mo.On today's episode: you'll find out how cholera and typhoid-laced fart water led to the reinvention of one of the world's cleverest and most innovative cities; you will find out why crapping on music could technically be considered a kind of self-care; and although you're missing the context now, I'm going to advise you to potentially remove your fingernails at some point, and you might surprise yourself by agreeingAnd if you were listening on Patreon… you would hear the beloved tale of a potentially made-up cow that got the jimmy legs and vaporized a city; you would visit the most literally and purposefully vomit-inducing statue ever erected; and you would learn the fascinating history of transportation-based toilets. Today's episode was supposed to be another minisode, but in the new-standing tradition, so much for that. It was also supposed to be bloodless, which it was, but it still managed to be incredibly disturbing and upsetting without it. I make that point that if we had dropped 800 lbs of blood on people, you would have been easier to get over. You ever hear of the 2008 case of a man experiencing severe untreated psychosis, attacked and decapitating his seat mate on a Greyhound Bus with a hunting knife in Manitoba, Canada? I believe the Dave Matthews Poop Bus Disaster of 2004 is far worse. I would want the members and families of the Dave Matthews band know I mean all this in good fun. Much better fun than the 120 people who ate 800 lbs of fudge from the sky on that August day. Again, good fun. I finish the episode with a few shoutouts. I am proud when I say I was born in Inglewood, California. So were Li and Leslie Jones. When I was 5 or 6 years old, my father would take me to work as I sat and stamped brochures with the name Van Ness Pharmacy. Then the perscription driver would take me to Daniel Freeman Elementary School. I say that with all the reverence in the world for the process; I learned work ethic. When I heard that there was a wine bar that primarily served wines from black owned wineries and was catgering to a fnew crowd of black wine enthusiasts and in Inglewood, I had to hear more. And Li and Leslie Jones did not disappoint. You might think Leslie Jones and Li Jones would never have dreamed of running a wine bar while growing up in a home where wine was rarely poured and celebrations leaned more toward lemonade stands than stemware. Bruno is a Brazilian drummer and percussionist based in the Bay Area and the longtime drummer for indie rock icon Mitski. He graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston, moved to New York in 2011 and to Los Angeles in 2020.
