For many Asian Americans, seeing Kristi Yamaguchi win the gold in women's figure skating at the 1992 Olympics was everything. She was more than a famous athlete — she was one of the few Asian Americans on TV, period. Yet for Kristi, the polished, glamorous image that we all saw was very different from her experience, on the inside. From her choice to skate solo to seeking endorsements in an anti-Asian climate, reporter Stefanie Ritoper looks at the moments that almost stopped her from becoming the Kristi Yamaguchi that we all know. UGH love love talking with the Netchicks: Sara Gretzky and Natalie Buck. We had the best time! “American Idol” season one was an entertainment behemoth in the 2002. It introduced us to sassy judges and gave the world the multi-hyphened legend, Ryan Seacrest. But besides that, it also introduced the world to Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini, the heroes of this episode. After season one was done, the next logical step was taken – LETS MAKE A MOVIE! And a movie, they made… “From Justin to Kelly” was a musical/rom-com/beach flick released in the summer of 2003. Considering how popular “American Idol” was, the film HAD to be a success, right?... This week Ray teaches Rob about the departure of Brian Dunkleman, how apparently Ft. Lauderdale has a platform on the beach where you can tap dance, and how the guy who wrote the script for “Spice World”, also wrote this script. LEGEND! Nadia Turner was the #8 finalist on the 4th season of American Idol (2005) and Zareh, also know as Za, was only four years old. In the spring of 2022 Zareh, then 21, auditioned for AI and surprised her mother when she took her to the audition. Zareh performed “Bust Out Your Windows” by Jazmine Sullivan, which impressed the judges. It was such a pleasure to have a conversation with both mother and daughter at the same time, to share stories of Nadia's mom and grandmother as well as Za's perspective of her mother and grandmother -we're talking about four generations of strong women.Nadia says she's a very different parent today than she was in her 20's and a college student when Za was born. She's very grateful because she always new that her mother was going to be there to help her raised her two daughters. Zareh completely understands why her younger sister is being raised differently than she was. Zareh says that her mom was very strict when she was young but now she understands and appreciates why and respects her mother's decisions. It was, at times, overwhelming raising Zareh when Nadia was younger but now she's got a different attitude about raising her younger daughter, she concentrates on the things that are important, the things that really matter. Rosita, Nadia's mother, originally from the island of St. Eustatius, was a single mom who worked 9-5 at an electric company. "There's never been a time when she didn't show up for me" reflects Nadia. Rosita was very supportive of her daughter, whether it was sports or a school activity, she was always there for her regardless if she truly understood her daughters passions or interests. "I couldn't have done this thing called motherhood with out my mother, Rose," says Turner.Nadia spent quite a bit of time with her maternal grandmother, Esme, Rosita's mother. Nadia remembers her grandmother as "being my Zen, my peace, always very quiet and calm." She continues "she was very religious and always humming her hymns, she never raised her voice and for some reason, that moved mountains for me." When Nadia was a child and she and her mother got into an argument, Nadia recalls simply sitting quietly next to her grandmother and holding her hand which made everything feel alright. There's so much more to learn about my two guests and the influential women that helped them become who they are today. Always so grateful for the mothers/grandmothers and female family members who preceded us to lay down the groundwork and straightened path to keep us moving forward. When I asked Za if she stands a little taller because of these strong women in her life she responds, "my grandmother and mother are my biggest idols. I look up to them for everything they do. We are a family full of women. My grandmother is present no matter what's going on. I'm so grateful and definitely stand taller."There's so much more to these two magnificent women. Hope you enjoy the conversation.Thank you for sharing your stories Nadia and Zareh. There are links below with more information regarding Zareh and Nadia Turner's latest music and singing with the band 'Nadia Turner and the Son Kings' and more. We're in the midst of Eurovision right now, the extravagant celebration of over-the-top music and outrageous costumes and, every now and then, taste. Eurovision is a great big ball of fun, and it was the subject of the very first episode of The Sewers of Paris. This week, we're revisiting my 2015 interview with Jānis, who on this very show was the first person to introduce me to the joy of Eurovision, along with the German version of American Idol, gay-adjacent Hitchcock movies, and hard-core camp. We'll have that conversation in a minute. First, a reminder that I've got a weekly newsletter where I write stories about queer pop culture and also link to cute animal videos — subscribe to that at mattbaume.com. Also take a look at my YouTube channel for videos about film and TV history — I've got a video coming this weekend about how Will & Grace premiered at what might've been the worst possible time, and how the creators overcame the Ellen curse. Also, big thanks to everyone who supports The Sewers of Paris on Patreon! We all know Lauren Alaina the singer/songwriter, platinum-selling artist, and newly inducted member of the Grand Ole Opry, and we love her! But today we're getting a more personal look at the Lauren off the stage as she shares about her newly released book, Getting Good At Being You. In the book, Lauren tells stories and experiences from the last decade and a half that have shaped her into the bubbly, talented, powerhouse she is today. The whole book walks readers through her decade-long struggle to, as she puts it, learn to love her whole, authentic self. While the book runs the gamut of professional struggle to family issues to toxic dating relationships, much of her message focuses on struggling to embrace her body. With body image being a chronic struggle for most women, Lauren was thrown onto the public stage at just 15 when she was voted runner-up on American Idol. And while she is grateful for her childlike fearlessness looking back -- “I owe every single thing I have to that 15-year-old girl having the confidence that she had something special and could go and do that.” -- her overnight fame left her struggling with years of bulimia and harsh exercise regimes with false hopes of the “fitting a mold of pretty” that would prolong her success. The heart behind the book is this: “The book was my opportunity to share with women that everyone struggles. Struggle isn't something to hide or be ashamed of. Struggle helps make us who we are.” She shares everything from practical health routines and positive self-talk to the importance of keeping strong friends and faith. At the end of the day, Lauren is championing the simple but life-changing message of love – for ourselves, for others, and for the Lord – that has finally helped her get good and being and loving her true self. She is an absolute gem of a woman with a heart of gold. Thank you, Lauren, for sharing your stories and your music with the world!

Grammy-winning artist Mandisa joins Darlene Brock and Julie Bender to share how she recognized her worth after a traumatic experience at 16 shattered her self-image and darkened her outlook on life. Thrilled to welcome Maddie Poppe, American Idol Season 16 Winner to Jrodconcerts, The Podcast. Celebrating the release of her first new single in three years with 'The One That Got Away', Maddie has a new and evolved sound. While still very much able to bowl over a crowd with her honeyed voice and acoustic guitar, she's upped her game by tapping into a modern sound that blends R&B, pop, and Americana, and by committing herself to writing her own songs. In this special conversation, Maddie shares with Jamie her thoughts on cancel culture, the double edged sword of American Idol and reality show contracts, controversies, enduring friendships and more. Maddie will also be heading on tour this year, so make sure to see the dates and more at: https://maddiepoppe.com
We had a great conversation with Maddie Poppe Season 16 American Idol Winner on The Chris & Sandy Show. We talked about may things from music, sacrifices, she told some really great stories especially on the side of music no one really talks about plus a whole lot more! Just like the 1st time we had her on the show, she was straight up authentic and raw which we love that about her!Unless you've experienced it firsthand, there's no way to understand just how dramatically instant fame can mess with your head. Maddie Poppe went through all kinds of emotions — from elation to self-doubt — after winning American Idol in 2018, releasing her debut album Whirlwind the following year, and then ultimately watching in amazement as many of the people in her creative orbit dropped away. Despite the momentum from a pair of hit singles, “Made You Miss” and “Not Losing You,” Maddie found herself alone, and her future as an artist uncertain.“There were so many times I felt I had the rug pulled out from under me. Like the minute any momentum had built up, it came crumbling back down. From losing team members to seeing crucial opportunities fall through, I found myself feeling so helpless and thinking, ‘How am I going to do this on my own?' It felt like I was standing at the bottom of a mountain I was too afraid to climb,” Maddie says. “It took some time, but I finally realized I didn't have a choice, my fate was in my own hands. I had to face my fears, rise above. The Iowa native, who captured the attention of fans with her folksy singer-songwriter style, did exactly that by giving herself the grace to evolve. While Maddie, now 24, can still very much bowl over a crowd with only her honeyed voice and acoustic guitar, she's upped her game by tapping into a modern sound that blends R&B, pop, and Americana, and by committing herself to writing her own songs. On her irresistible new single “One That Got Away,” Maddie writes about the dissolution of a friend's longtime relationship, predicting that the guy who foolishly dumped her will realize he threw away something great. But the song — a soulful jam with shades of Bruno Mars and Maroon 5 — can also be seen as a commentary on Maddie's own experience in the music industry. Working with L.A. producer Scott Robinson and Nashville's David Spencer, along with hit songwriters like Molly Reed Grayson, Bryan Simpson, and Thomas Finchum, Maddie has been constantly coming up with new ideas, both lyrically and musically. The deceptively upbeat “Good Soldier” is about the expectations and rules you're supposed to adhere to in life and why it sometimes pays to not fall in line. “Good Enough to Let You Go,” meanwhile, begs an addiction — be it a lover or a vice — to break your heart and set you free. Unlike the tracks selected for her on her debut LP, each new song is rich in Maddie's own voice."I'm very proud of Whirlwind, but I feel like this new project speaks truer to me and my story,” she says. “When you're just starting out like I was then, it can feel like 100 different people are trying to tell your story. Now, I'm finally telling it in my own voice.”Maddie has a lot to tell. Hand-in-hand with her American Idol victory, she won a People's Choice Award for her turn on the show, had Whirlwind hit Number 2 on the iTunes Pop Charts, and went on to become a hot guest on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Live With Kelly & Ryan and Good Morning America. All of this in addition to touring the country opening for Ingrid Michaelson and headlining her own tours, including a Christmas run that has become a seasonal “must” for Maddie's fans. With a newfound momentum and passion for music, Maddie is ready to play her new material onstage. She's plotting a tour to introduce fans to the sound she's created, one shaped by the diverse artists she's been listening to: Lily Allen, Sheryl Crow, and Corinne Bailey Rae are all in rotation."I'm thrilled to be releasing new music, but I'm even more excited to play these songs live,” Maddie says. “Almost everything I'm writing is upbeat and will be so much fun to perform with the energy of a live audience."“It's so important to be true to yourself and in doing so, the right audience will find you,” she adds. “For a long time, I simply thought of myself as the singer-songwriter, hometown girl from Iowa. But along the way I learned to spread my wings and branch out. I truly feel I've become the artist I was meant to be.”#AmericanIdol #Winner #MaddiePoppe

I'm visiting my grandma and she's totally focused on a piece of paper. Naturally, I ask her what she's looking at. She tells me they're letters from my grandfather to her and her to my grandfather during wartime. Some are torn, some are yellowed from age, some are typed and some handwritten. I notice there's a suitcase next to her filled with hundreds of these aged letters. I'm curious, so I ask if I can read one. “Oh no no no,” she quickly responds. “A few of these are a little too risqué for you.” She promises that these letters will be mine one day… when she's gone. I'll never forget that conversation with her that afternoon. My grandparent's love story during wartime, the legacy of that love, and the way they saw the world are encapsulated and preserved in those letters forever. My guest today on the Storytelling School Podcast knows and appreciates the power of the written word. Tricia Lee is not only recognized as one of the new top writers in Hollywood with many accolades for writing (and directing) to her name already, but her stories stick with you long after you hear them. If you're curious to know: How can a different perspective influence stories you've seen a lot of times already? How did a wrong number become the impetus behind an award-winning feature film script? What can the animal world teach us about humanity? Then listen in as we discuss family and life incidents, unlikely friendships, the impact of putting meaning and feeling into your stories, overcoming writer's block, and more! What you will learn in this episode: Why truth (not necessarily facts) is key to a great story How journaling can help you solve “blank page syndrome” Why your story matters, even if you think it doesn't Who is Tricia? Tricia Lee is an AAPI female filmmaker who grew up in Toronto, Canada. She specializes in creating both heart-warming and heart-breaking but also humorously uplifting films. With her Canadian perspective, she likes to tell stories that look at the American Dream and explore ideas around voicelessness, belonging, and shared humanity. As a teenager, Sevana was in a girl group competing on Jamaica's version of American Idol. She came in third, positioned to take her career to the next level. But that wasn't the path taken by my guest Sevana, at least not at first. For Sevana, the journey from reluctant pop star to a recording artist fully embracing her black female identity is a story of professional and personal maturity. With the result that we are gifted by the presence of an artist who has found her voice. And with breakout hits like “Mango” and “If You Only Knew,” she is ready, willing and able to share it with her growing global fan base. We talk about the changing face of reggae, “Euphoria” Jamaican-style, her love of Marvin Gaye, Gunna and dance hall, starting her own label and raising positive vibrations with her music. Have you ever experienced something difficult and began questioning God? Maybe even doubting His goodness, grace, and faithfulness? Starting to ask Him the ‘Why' questions, like “God, Why are you allowing this to happen to me?” Today's Built Different Guest, Christian singer and songwriter, Danny Gokey, is no stranger to challenge and difficulty. After losing his late wife, Sophia Martinez, to complications during her third surgery to treat her congenital heart disease, Danny was left broken and uncertain of what was to come. Yet, in those moments God encouraged him to reframe his ‘Why' questions into ‘What' questions… Rather than “Why me?” he began asking “What can I learn in the midst of my pain?” or even “God, what is your will so that I may begin walking in it?” It's amazing what God can turn our pain into. Just four short weeks after losing Sophia, Danny tried out for American Idol and placed in the top-3 sparking what we now see as one of the most decorated Christian music careers in history! He was also remarried to his current wife of over a decade, Leyicet, and together they have 4 beautiful children! Danny's heart and music rests in reminding us that God is for you and not against you. He has a beautiful and perfect plan for your life. And He can turn your pain into your greatest purpose if you let Him. If you're struggling to believe and see it with that perspective today, maybe you just haven't seen it yet. Keep on believing!

When Titanic pulled into theaters 25 years ago, it quickly became an inescapable cultural juggernaut. Everything about it was huge: Its budget, runtime, box office, and accolades. And it catapulted Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet into a whole new stratosphere of fame. Now that we've got some distance from Leo Mania and "king of the world" jokes, how does James Cameron's epic hold up all these years later? We had the pleasure of interviewing Catie Turner over Zoom video!Critically acclaimed, multi-million streaming singer-songwriter Catie Turner is back with her latest single, “Nothing.” A self-proclaimed “bullshitter” who “drives self-help books into the ground,” Turner is back with her profound and poignant lyricism, this time in the form of a high energy, pop smash. Turner – who only just wrapped a major US run supporting Canadian pop band Valley – will kick off her summer as special guest on Léon's upcoming Fade Into A Dream: The North American Tour, beginning May 30 at Toronto, ON's Phoenix Concert Center and then touring North America through late June. For complete details and ticket information, please visit www.catieturner.com. “Nothing” follows Catie's heart-wrenching breakthrough hit single, “God Must Hate Me,” which proved a viral phenomenon upon its November 2021 release. Applauded by American Songwriter as “a platform for all sorts of reflections and interpretations…one of (Turner's) most successful songs to date,” the track landed Catie on the cover Spotify's “Next Gen Singer Songwriters” playlist and has since earned over 38 million streams. A powerful performance video, filed live at the historic St. Ann's Church in Brooklyn, NY, is streaming now at Catie's official YouTube channel. In addition, after hearing 16-year-old rising artist Javier Bennett's TikTok of him covering the viral track, Catie reached out and together the two artists came up with “god must hate me (lofi),” a stunning lo-fi version which includes captivating new production and an original verse from Bennett. Last fall also saw Catie team up with new pop artist JORDY for a moving, co-written duet, “(Wish I Didn't Have To) Lie,” landing the pair on the cover of Spotify's “Sad Hour” playlist upon release and followed by a series of US tour dates that saw the two artists further collaborating by performing their song together onstage.
