What does it mean when a Christian describes someone as “God-fearing”? Is this a good thing? And what does it imply about their view of God, or human relationships with God, or the consequences of NOT being “God-fearing”? Dan explores these topics in this week's episode. Dan begins this episode with by discussing new polling that reveals how GOP voters see Trump as person of faith. This leads to an investigation into the endlessly growing web of new conspiracies that are now part of conservative religious identity on the American Right. This leads to a discussion of anti-vaxxing getting real funding in government programs, it's role in GOP primary. Dan then touches briefly on the AL and FL redistricting fights. What's going on when someone tells us they need to “speak the truth in love”? How is this similar to someone who assures us they're being critical because “they're our friend,” or “because they care for us”? How is the intention of these phrases changed when they take on a religious sense? Dan looks at these issues in this week's episode. On the first segment Dan and Brad begrudgingly discuss Lauren Boebrert's Beetlejuice scandal - and what it reveals about the Christian nationalist persona she's cultivated. In the second segment, they discuss a myriad of issues - from the firing of a teacher for teaching the Diary of Anne Frank to supposed discrimination against Whites at West Point to the charge that Merrick Garland thinks all Catholics are religious extremists. In the final segment they discuss the Alabama redistricting case - and what it we now know about the dark money network funding the state's defiance of the federal government. Spoiler alert: it's an attempt to once and for all nullify the Voting Rights Act. Twenty years after her breakout on “American Idol,” Kelly Clarkson released an album called “Chemistry” that deals with the long arc of a relationship and her recent divorce. She sat down to talk with Hanif Abdurraqib, a music writer passionate about the craft of songwriting. “This literally was written in real time,” Clarkson reflects. “That was me being indecisive. Man, I have kids. Do I want to do this? Can I try again?” But writing about divorce as one of the best-known celebrities in America is very different from a young artist's heartbreak anthem. “It's easy to hide in metaphors when it's not the biggest thing that's ever happened,” she says. “Everyone's going to know. Unfortunately my life is very public, especially in the rough times.” Plus, Robert Samuels, a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer on politics and race, shares his secret indulgence: watching classic figure-skating routines on YouTube.
“There's no morality without God.” That is a claim made by many Christians. But it's also a claim with a cultural hold that extends beyond card-carrying Christians. What does it mean? Why do people make this claim? Should we believe it? And why do people make this claim? Is it just a philosophical or theological claim? Or are their bigger issues at work? Dan tackles these questions in this week's episode. Text messaging, or SMS, first came into prominence two decades ago by voting on American Idol, but the technology is as hot as ever for employers. It's starting to look like text recruiting is here to stay. That's why we invited Rick Koerner, VP of unified communications at UPS on the podcast. Rick has been texting with job candidates for almost a decade, and he brings his best tips and takeaways to the podcast. Along the way, he throws in anecdotes on all things UPS, like how deliveries only happen one right turn at a time to increase efficiency, and his own story about why he doesn't have a LinkedIn profile. Say what?!?!?
It's been 21 years since Jim Verraros made TV history as the first contestant from the reality TV show American Idol to come out as gay. Although he wasn't allowed to talk about his sexuality on the show, by coming out during the promotional tour he paved the way for other closeted gay entertainers to fearlessly be themselves.People like Clay Aiken, David Archuleta and Adam Lambert and even Neil Patrick Harris and Lance Bass owe a lot to people like Jim Verraros. Following his glow up on reality television, Jim became a queer comedy film regular with his appearances in the Eating Out and Another Gay Movie franchises, and even had a Billboard chart hit with his song "You Turn It On.” Today Jim Verraros, star of American Idol and the Eating Out franchise joins us to celebrate his return to music with his playful new single “Take My Bow” which he lip synced on Instagram during his crossfit class. ‘idol' = a person or thing used as an object of worship; object that centers our priorities… If we were to ask you - what are your idol(s) in life? You might be inclined to say, “none.” But, is that really the case? This week in True North, we will learn how to identify, test, and challenge the potential idols in our lives.
Brad begins by tracing the extreme Christian nationalism of the 2020s to the years following 9/11. The thesis: the ways that Republican politicians and conservative pastors responded to 9/11 led to a new chapter of American Christian nationalism. Dan then picks up the thread to discuss how Black churches and other groups are teaching Black history in Florida given the fact that it is being left out of school curricula in the state. The episode finishes with an extended discussion of the lapsed child tax credit - and what it says about our country's morals and priorities. Anthony Fedorov Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson I'm still smiling and I'm not sure I'm gonna stop any time soon. What a blast I had with American Idol finalist Anthony Fedorov. It's been a minute since last we met and Anthony is even more spectacular than I remembered. He opened the show with That Someone, his new song from his new musical, Proud Marys. I loved it! Can't wait till Sunday when he does it in person at his long-awaited return engagement at the Catalina Bar & Grill. In LA? Please join me! https://bit.ly/3LkJTusHey We talked Anthony's early childhood in Russia, his scary, years-long medical situation, hoping to talk, let alone sing… and for a living… to worldwide acclaim… crazy! The trauma of getting out of the country and then getting to the USA sans English. The obstacles Anthony has overcome in his young life are astounding, his accomplishments are as well. We talked the American Idol journey, Simon's advice that changed his life and career, meeting his Idol, Marc Anthony, barely noticing J.Lo, Ellen, or Mariah Carey. Great story! And, the aftermath which led him to the theatre, something he'd never considered, but where he spent the next many years and thrived from off-Broadway in The Fantastics to most recently in Love Actually Live at The Wallis in Beverly Hills. How the hell did I miss that? We talked about the three, count ‘em three musicals Anthony has in various stages of development. Artist, activist, singer/songwriter, dad, and lovely human, everything Anthony does is with intention to impact positive change in the world. Anthony closed with his first monster hit song, I Poop, inspired by fatherhood and a diaper changing. Another great story! It's garnered over 22 million streams to date. Not counting the 20+ I've added in the last hour. Tell Alexa to play it for fun and… well, it's paying the rent! Anthony has the voice of an angel and writes killer pop/rock songs with lyrics that are socially and politically important. He's a beautiful man to behold, hear, and hold dear. Lupe (Mayorga) Bartholomew is American Idol finalist David Archuleta's mother. Lupe, her mother, and her three sisters joined the LDS church in Honduras on September 22, 1978. Ultimately, Lupe and her family came to the United States to live the Mormon dream. Lupe lived as a very happy, fully believing, orthodox Mormon mother until 2022, when her son, David, came out as gay. David's difficulties with the LDS Church's LGTBQ policies and doctrines caused Lupe to begin questioning the Mormon faith that she loved. This is Lupe's Mormon story. Santa Rosa Pizzeria menu. The co-owners of Santa Rosa Pizzeria, Peter Lopez and Ignacio Ruiz, join Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras on Brew Ha Ha today. Peter is a frequent guest and occasional co-host on Brew Ha Ha, here is Peter's most recent BHH episode, from March of this year. Peter Lopez is back with Ignacio Ruiz, aka Nacho, as co-owners of the new Santa Rosa Pizzeria. They have been open for about a month. They are active on Facebook, at this link. Nacho tells the story of how he and Peter worked together in another restaurant, then they reconnected. Peter found a location that used to be under another name. Also, Barolo's Pizza was there for about 15 years. So the place has a pizza pedigree. In less than a month they started! The Art of Pizza Peter also runs Juncture Taproom and Ignacio is also the controlling partner of Art's Place, so he is also an ideal partner for Peter. Ignacio learned pizza while working in an Italian restaurant, and he also makes pizza at Art's Place. Art was a master and taught the art to Ignacio. Art Ibleto's kids still control the Pasta King name, so he steers clear of things like their famous ravioli. They do have an extensive wine and beer menu. They named all the pizzas after Santa Rosa icons, including Jerry Robinson, former Raider and All-American UCLA Bruin linebacker of yesteryear. Jerry Robinson (84) UCLA, 1978 Peter considers his place to be a family friendly taproom, with something for everyone of all ages. He wants people to feel comfortable and safe. They even have their own Charlie Brown statue. He originally named Juncture Taproom “Confluence.” Juncture is at the corner of Mission and Montgomery, close to Howard Park and Spring Lake, where Rincon Valley and Bennett Valley come together. There is a band called Igor and the Red Elvises that plays there. They are a great band, a lot of fun. They won Star Search with Ed McMahon on TV long before American Idol and The Voice. They took the money, bought a van an went on tour. They have a cult following. Santa Rosa Pizzeria is open noon to 8 pm, and they do deliveries from 11:30 to 8:30. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Herlinda brought a guitar pick from the Beatles museum in Liverpool and she has lots more stories from Liverpool in the later part of the show. See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options.
