Baber shares how songs like “Clown in a Barrel” reflect loving something that hurts—often mirroring his relationship with the music business—and why he keeps showing up despite financial pressure from streaming economics. He explains his independent release strategy of issuing “double” singles, describes the “holy” magic of co-writing and studio sessions, and details the origins of songs like “Hurt Talking” and “West of Memphis.” Baber also recounts surviving a 1999 commercial plane crash, compares American Idol and The Voice, and draws a firm line against using AI to write lyrics or melodies while using it only as a production exploration tool.00:00 Chasing the Dream01:06 Podcast Intro Setup03:27 March Madness Weekend05:03 Crittenden County Roots10:33 River Delta Inspiration13:35 Album Themes Grown Up16:27 Clown in a Barrel Story18:52 Showing Up Anyway24:11 Indie Release Strategy29:33 Songwriting Room Magic35:16 Writer Block Breakthrough35:51 West of Memphis Meaning38:09 Big Rock Production38:45 Songwriting Is Spiritual40:16 Can Anyone Write Songs42:08 Co Writing And Demos44:09 Fireworks Gets Cut47:30 Radio Pays Songwriters49:23 Idol Versus The Voice53:35 Plane Crash And Trauma56:04 Toughness And Showing Up59:53 AI Versus Human Art01:05:34 AI Expands Genres01:09:37 Curiosity And The Future01:13:35 Wrap Up And Farewell

The Jay Franze Show: Your backstage pass to the entertainment industry

Three hours. That's the kind of clock Nashville can put on a recording session, and it forces you to learn fast or get left behind. We sit down with country music recording artist Stephen Quinn to unpack what it really felt like to walk into a Nashville studio for the first time to cut “Get It Girl” with seasoned session musicians and a producer who actually cared about getting it right. If you've ever wondered how professionals can hear a song once, chart it, and deliver a finished track at speed, this conversation puts you in the room.We also dig into the role that rarely gets enough credit: the vocal coach. Stephen explains why he brings Velvet, his longtime coach and co-writer, into high-stakes sessions, how she balances technical corrections with creative choices, and why having the right ears in the room can make your vocals stronger and the entire recording process smoother. From work tapes recorded on iPhone voice memos to “living with the lyrics” before committing to production, we get specific about songwriting habits that help independent artists finish better songs. Then the story opens up. Stephen walks us through his American Idol journey, from pre-dawn cattle-call auditions to Hollywood Week at the Dolby Theater, including the nerves, the friendships, and the performance moments that stick. We talk about his patriotic song “Stand Up,” what “country” means as a way of life, and why audiences stand up when the message hits. Finally, he shares what it's like to sing the national anthem at a Jacksonville Jaguars playoff game, why he keeps it traditional, and how local relationships helped land a Country Fest slot opening for Ashley Cook.If you enjoy honest artist conversations about Nashville recording, country songwriting, music video production, American Idol, and performing live, subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review so more listeners can find the show.Send us Fan MailSupport the showLinksJay Franze: https://jayfranze.com/JFS Countdowns/Playlists: https://jayfranze.com/playlists/ContactContact: https://jayfranze.com/contact/SocialsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/jayfranzeYouTube: https://youtube.com/@jayfranzeEverywhere: @jayfranzeServicesServices: https://jayfranze.com/services/BooksBooks: https://jayfranze.com/books/MerchandiseMerchandise: https://jayfranze.com/merchandise/SupportSupport: https://jayfranze.com/support/Sponsor the Show: https://jayfranze.com/sponsor/Shout OutsHigh Mountain Breezes Music: https://highmountainbreezesmusic.com/VR Knives: https://www.facebook.com/VRKnives

This week, Savannah sits down with American Idol winner Trent Harmon for one of the most candid conversations he's ever had publicly. After winning the final season of American Idol on Fox in 2016, Trent thought he was stepping into the opportunity of a lifetime. Instead, he found himself navigating broken promises, unanswered questions, legal battles, and a music career that looked very different from what he had been led to believe. For the first time, Trent opens up about the fallout that followed his win, why he's spent nearly a decade staying quiet, and what finally made him ready to tell his story. But this conversation goes far beyond contracts and career setbacks. Trent shares how those experiences impacted his mental health, his relationships, and his faith. He talks about nearly walking away from music altogether, finding purpose through worship, becoming a husband and father, and why success looks completely different to him today than it did when he stood on the Idol stage. It's a conversation about disappointment, resilience, accountability, faith, and discovering that sometimes the life you were meant to build looks nothing like the one you originally planned.Thank you to our sponsors for supporting our show!- Quince: Step into the holiday season with layers made to feel good, look polished, and last—with Quince. In today's episode, I sit down with entrepreneur and marketing strategist Kim Walsh Phillips alongside singer, actor, and American Idol breakout Justin Guarini to talk about the real difference between fame, celebrity, and authority in today's business world. We break down how visibility creates opportunity, why authenticity only works when it's consistent, and how the right relationships open doors that applications and cold pitches never will. We also discuss the dangers of chasing attention without delivering value, how social media rewards personality as much as expertise, and why protecting your reputation matters more than quick money. Along the way, we share lessons on building communities, filtering out the wrong people, and creating experiences that people genuinely connect with.

Kim on a Whim tackles America's collapsing birth rate and the growing belief among younger generations that marriage and parenthood are obstacles instead of life goals. Kim argues modern feminism, corporate ambition culture, and social messaging have convinced many women that being “just a mom” is somehow a failure, pointing to criticism directed at Missouri singer and mother Hannah Harper after her American Idol win. Marc and Kim debate whether technology, social media, and dating apps have emotionally isolated people and weakened real-world social skills, with Marc arguing hookup culture and instant-access dating apps have stripped relationships of meaningful emotional connection. The conversation expands into concerns about AI-generated communication, fake online identities, and even people forming romantic attachments to AI bots, while Kim warns younger generations increasingly rely on artificial tools instead of authentic interaction. The segment blends cultural criticism, personal stories about marriage and dating, and broader concerns about how technology, feminism, and modern social habits may be reshaping relationships, family formation, and the future population itself. Trevor May & The Nomads get some love, Sideshow gets their rightful victory lap, and everyone agrees Highland, Illinois may secretly be manufacturing musicians in a lab somewhere. Then things take a surprisingly philosophical turn when the show debates whether adults are actually cooler now than they were in high school. What starts as a simple question becomes a full therapy session involving acne glow-ups, fake confidence, bus-seat politics, floating between social groups, and why being a jerk in high school somehow counted as “cool.” Rafe drops accidental wisdom, Lern gets deep about authenticity, and King Scott proudly explains that he still doesn't get invited to parties… but now at least he hears about them. Growth. Beautiful growth. The conversation somehow escalates into midlife-crisis accusations after truck purchases, homeowner flexes, and dangling accessories become evidence in the court of Cool Dad Law. Which honestly makes this the exact kind of daily podcast people come here for: emotionally unstable grown adults trying to justify their hobbies while roasting each other into dust. That's friendship, baby.In Crap on Celebrities, the gang covers Tool reportedly being approached before U2 for the Las Vegas Sphere, celebrity “Game of Thrones politics,” and why Tool fans may need to start saving money immediately. There's also Amazon TV announcements, Fallout casting news, Reacher updates, and an absolutely brutal listen to Vince Neil performing on American Idol alongside Carrie Underwood. The Daily Boost | Coaching You Need. Success You Deserve.

Most of the rules about being your best have changed. Specialists used to win. Now, generalists with human discernment win. Smart goals are over. Realistic is the same as mediocre. And the gap between knowing and doing has never been wider. In today's episode, I'm walking you through what it actually takes to stand out in a world where everyone has the same information at their fingertips — and why your gift, not your skill, is the thing nobody else has. If you've been wondering where you fit in the age of AI, press play. Featured Story I used to laugh at American Idol. These 18-year-old kids would walk up to the judges and say, "I've been working my whole life to do this." My whole life — at 18. I'd roll my eyes. Then I started watching the videos. They'd been singing since they could talk. Performing since they could walk. Naturally gifted, then ground out the work on top of it. That's when it clicked. There's a difference between a skill you've drilled and a gift you came in with. Most people I work with spend years polishing the skill. The gift is sitting right there, unused. Important Points There's a difference between skills and gifts. Skills you grind for. Gifts you came in with. Stack them and watch out. Specialists used to win. In the age of AI, the generalist who can wrangle the bots and apply human discernment wins. Spend more time doing than learning. Knowledge is cheap now. Wisdom comes from actually moving through the world. Memorable Quotes The R in SMART goals says be realistic. You are going for mediocre. There is no realistic goal worth pursuing. ChatGPT is smarter than I am, smarter than you are, smarter than almost everybody. It is the wisdom that succeeds. If you're not happy and not using your gifts, don't keep going. Be a good quitter. You have options. Be smart about it. Scott's Three-Step Approach Identify your gift — the thing you've always been naturally good at, separate from any skill you grinded into existence. Stop trying to be a specialist. Learn to wrangle the AI tools and stack human discernment on top of what they give you. Get out of learning mode and spend more time doing. Wisdom only shows up when you actually move through the world.
