Join us for an inspiring conversation with singer-songwriter and guitarist Patti Spadaro. Patti shares her journey from the iconic clubs of Los Angeles to her current roots in Pennsylvania, discussing her music, teaching, and passion for empowerment. We delve into her latest single, "Glass Shatters," and explore how her soulful blend of rock, blues, and jam-band styles creates a space for connection and transformation.PATTI SPADARO brings a hopeful outlook to her introspective and heartfelt songwriting. Her guitar style has a soulful, fluid, jam-band feel. She loves to improvise, stretch out during live shows, and reach for musical magic. "Its all about the music and making a connection", says Patti, "bringing people together, letting loose, and being in the here and now". Her band's live shows create a space where the music opens up into something huge... the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. The music cuts through the everyday and connects right to the core. While living in Los Angeles, Patti released 3 albums and played LA's iconic clubs. She toured up and down the west coast & throughout the southwestern US. Her roots called Patti back to PA to raise a family. She has two daughters, released 2 more albums, and is continuing to record and perform. Patti also teaches college courses in yoga, meditation, and Mindfulness in Music.Glass Shatters is an inspiring tribute to the strength and resilience of women. It honors our historic first female Vice President, and our continuing quest to break glass ceilings everywhere. Five women vocalists come together to sing, harmonize and complement each other, with soulful lead guitar work by Spadaro. “When I left PA to attend Musician's Institute in the early 1990's, I was one of 3 women guitar students, in a sea of 700 guys." says Patti. “It wasn't easy being in such a minority. Society has come a long way, but there is still plenty of progress to be made.” Glass Shatters features Pittsburgh musicians and singers: Patti Spadaro (guitar/vocals), Anne Celedonia (keys/vocals), Cherylann Hawk, Jill Simmons & Alison McTavish (backing vocals), Eric Kurtzrock (drummer/recording engineer), and Ryan Black (bass).THE PATTI SPADARO BAND weave organic grooves with catchy original tunes and spur-of-the moment jamming. "I like to combine improvisation with good solid song writing" says Patti. "I love to get people up and dancing. Music can open minds and inspire, it can bring people together, even make a difference in the world. It's also a whole lot of fun." BRINGING ME BACK features drummers Eric Kurtzrock & Jim Donovan (Rusted Root), keyboardist Skip Sanders (The Clarks, Bill Deasy), and Jill Simmons singing harmony (Brown Eyed Women). The album features impressive musicianship and songs that reach deep. Songs about discovering what matters most. Standing up and living life from that place. A place of integrity and love; freedom, joy and passion. WOMEN ON TOP - add Jill Simmons, Cherylann Hawk, Alison McTavish and Andrea Pearl's lead vocals and beautiful harmonies to the mix. King Curtis played with Buddy Holly. Jimi Hendrix joined King's band. He opened for the Beatles at Shea Stadium. One of his best friends was Duane Allman. There is a ton of rock n roll tales told in the new book Soul Serenade: King Curtis and his Immortal Saxophone. I am really glad I looked passed King Curtis's R&B and Jazz resume because there was so much to be learned about this underrated talent. Support the Show.

Have you noticed how the mind works sometimes? Sure, it works all the time but sometimes it amazes me how we couldn't have planned something to happen the way it actually happened. I wanted to start this one with Monkey Man from the Stones. It such a cool tune. So, I did. John Cougar attributed I Need A Lover to the Stones' Happy. I didn't know that until those two were put together and I was researching and writing notes. And Mick Jagger turned 80 recently. Maybe I'm the only one who appreciates the coincidences but there they are. Today you'll hear rock opera tunes from Tommy and David Byrne on Broadway. Great number from him and company. On my mind: Tales Vinyl Tells is on RadioFreeNashville.org at 103.7 & 107.1 FM Wednesdays at 5PM Central time. Replays and podcasts of the radio show and complete archives of the podcast are on StudioMillsWellness and most podcast apps. The Post Covid Outdoor Concert series is back! Day 3 of the Peacock is coming soon with Grand Funk Railroad, Loggins and Messina and The Rolling Stones. Days 1 & 2 are on the podcast. Last but not least, I hope you really get what we're doing on Tales Vinyl Tells. It's preservation and exposure of what I feel is the best music of the 20th century. The vinyls, many of them anyway, have endured and get play on my show. Digital copies are lacking character. In hopes to continue my mission above, I humbly ask for your financial support. My ask is here. When you read it, you'll understand why this is so important to me. Thank you for all support already offered and thank you for listening to TVT.

John Leventhal is a multiple Grammy Award-winning producer, guitarist and songwriter who has been steering the ship on many albums and musical projects over the last 40 years. John first came onto most people's radar when he produced Shawn Colvin's successful debut album “Steady On”. They collaborated again in 1996 on “A Few Small Repairs” which was a smash hit. Coming up in the New York live music scene, John also worked with Jim Lauderdale in those years and produced Jim's debut as well. A late bloomer to music and the electric guitar, John has developed a subtle yet complex and unmistakeable sound that has kept him working as a live musician and producer for artists like William Bell, Marc Cohn, Sara Jarosz, and Rodney Crowell. Leventhal has also produced a slew of successful and acclaimed albums with his wife of many years, Rosanne Cash. As a songwriter, he's penned songs for Tedeschi Trucks, Vince Gill, George Strait, Patty Loveless, and many more. John has (finally!) made his debut solo album which he is threatening to release sometime this year, called “Rumble Strip”. I've heard it, can vouch for its awesomeness, and we talk about it on the show, although you won't be able to hear it for some months yet! Susan Tedeschi co-partner with Derek Trucks in life and music is our guest this week. We first talked to Susan in May when the first Moon album, Crescent was released. This is the rest of the story Tedeschi Trucks Band has created “one of those albums” that will become the standard by which all other such albums are created. It's an amazing story and we are thrilled to have Susan share it with us . It's our complete 30-minute interview – with the tracks from the first album. The concept behind I Am The Moon, the GRAMMY-winning band's fifth studio recording, was suggested by TTB vocalist Mike Mattison in May 2020, two months after the band was forced off the road by the pandemic. The 12th-century poem Layla & Majnun by the Persian poet, Nizami Ganjavi, was the title inspiration for Eric Clapton's 1970 double-LP with Derek and the Dominos, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs – an influential album for Tedeschi Trucks Band. Interestingly, Ganjavi's source material resonated with Mattison and the rest of the band in an altogether different way. Finding complex themes and storylines that inspired their creative process, they forged a new, modern interpretation of the vast 100-page poem. The thought that started the project was “Instead of Majnun, lets see this story through Layla's eyes. Operatic in scope, Tedeschi Trucks Band explores romantic relationships, collective struggle, faith, and the human experience on I Am The Moon. “It's amazing,” Trucks says, “because we wrote most of this music in a pretty short time span. There are even chord changes that mirror other tunes on the albums – themes and variations, lyrical allusions, that pop back up.” He continues: “You always want to do something bigger and thematic. This is the first time it happened naturally.” The decision to sequence and release I Am The Moon in four distinct episodes came “when we started thinking of records we love,” Derek says, citing Axis: Bold as Love, the 1967 LP by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. “It's 36 minutes long. That's the way to digest a record.” With that approach in mind, TTB will also present I Am The Moon: The Film, immersive visual companions to each album. The corresponding films will debut three days prior to each audio release, offering fans an early opportunity to digest each album in its entirety as a communal listening and viewing experience via the band's YouTube channel. It's so lovely...
Susan Tedeschi co-partner with Derek Trucks in life and music is our guest this week. Tedeschi Trucks Band has created “one of those albums” that will become the standard by which all other such albums are created. It's an amazing story and we are thrilled to have to share it with Susan. The 12th-century poem Layla & Majnun by Persian poet, Nizami Ganjavi, was the title inspiration for Eric Clapton's 1970 double-LP with Derek and the Dominos, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs – an influential album for Tedeschi Trucks Band. Interestingly, Ganjavi's source material resonated with Mattison and the rest of the band in an altogether different way. Finding complex themes and storylines that inspired their creative process, they forged a new, modern interpretation of the vast 100-page poem. I Am The Moon was written collectively and collaboratively, with band members contributing their own unique perspectives on the work. By January 2021 the band was recording at Tedeschi and Trucks' home studio, Swamp Raga, in Jacksonville, FL, with Derek behind the soundboard as producer and long-time studio engineer, Bobby Tis, in charge of recording and mixing. Operatic in scope, Tedeschi Trucks Band explores romantic relationships, collective struggle, faith, and the human experience on I Am The Moon.

Today's episode is chock-full of adventures from the life of touring musicians. Oteil and Mike are joined by guitarist, producer, and fellow podcaster Eric Krasno. Eric has been a fixture in popular music for decades, and his musical talent and breadth of knowledge is nearly unparalleled. The three discuss the power of discovering certain music at the exact right moment in your life, with Eric sharing his “late” discovery of Bob Dylan. Eric and Oteil trade stories from the road, from embracing being underprepared for gigs and learning on the fly, to reminiscing on the greats they've shared stages with and the superpowers they wield. They also discuss the challenge of learning the full Grateful Dead catalogue and its many iterations, and share some of their missteps along the way. For nearly two decades, Eric Krasno has been an omnipresent figure in popular music. We've heard his virtuosic, innovative guitar playing with Soulive and Lettuce (both of which he co-founded), seen him onstage supporting the likes of the Rolling Stones, Dave Mathews Band, John Mayer and The Roots, watched him take home multiple GRAMMY Awards, and benefited from his deft, behind-the-scenes work as a producer and songwriter for everyone from Norah Jones, Tedeschi Trucks, and 50 Cent to Talib Kweli, Aaron Neville, and Allen Stone. Krasno's recent solo album, 'Blood From A Stone,' reveals a previously unknown and utterly compelling side of his artistry, though, inviting us to bear witness as he both literally and metaphorically finds his voice. A chat with the super talented guitarist and songwriter Mark Lavengood as well as fans Steve, Jacob, and Rick. We talk about how the fans discovered Mark Lavengood. Our stories ramble into how Mark has been making the best of the pandemic and his new studio. We get into Mark’s soundtrack to life and leap into playing the dobro. We wrap things up with our dream show venue and who we want to see there. Along the way, we share many laughs.Becoming a fan of Mark LavengoodWe kicked off our chat by exploring how the fans became fans of Mark Lavengood. Steve became a fan through his work on the tech crew at the Ark. He had the pleasure of working during several performances by Mark.. The first time was during the Erin Zindle (Ebird & Friends) holiday show when Mark was with Lindsay Lou and the Flatbellys. Steve fell in love with Mark’s playing and energy on stage. He’s been a fan ever since.Jacob became a fan of Mark’s when he saw him at a Rob Reiderr basement show when Mark was playing with Lindsay Lou. Jacob continued with a happy accident ordering Mark Lavengood’s No Part of Nothin album thinking he was getting a Lindsay Lou album. Despite the initial surprise when spinning the disc, Jacob loved the album and looks forward to more from Mark Lavengood.Rick became a fan through me (Chuck). He went to a show at the Chelsea Alehouse for one of their Wednesday night bluegrass sessions where Mark was jamming with Jason Dennie of Thunderwude. After seeing Mark live, he became an instant fan.Handling the PandemicThe pandemic has been a bit of a forced sabbatical for Mark. He is keeping busy by working on his new house in Coral, Michigan which is about 30 minutes north of Grand Rapids. Mark is also doing live streams, some outdoor socially distanced shows, and working on his new studio.Mark’s children have been helping him out around the house. They are enjoying making music with Dad. Check out the videos on Mark’s Facebook page for a taste of the fun.Home StudioMark is jazzed to get his new studio up and running. He has converted the detached garage on his property into a studio with a control room, isolation booth, and live room. While there are some tweaks to be made, the work is nearly complete. In fact, Mark used the new studio to lay down some guest tracks on the new Desmond Jones albumI asked if the new studio is an extension of his Bear Mark Productions. Mark relayed that Bear Mark is more about booking and promotion currently. Unfortunately, with the pandemic, this aspect of his livelihood is on hold until we get live music rolling again (hopefully later in 2021).Working From HomeBeing able to spend more time at home allows Mark to focus not only on family, but on dialing in his playing and his overall performance. It is difficult to get others together to jam, but this opportunity to work on recording and songwriting makes the downtime from the road rewarding. One new goal is writing a new song a week and using that as another avenue to keep his fans on Patreon engaged. Ultimately, Mark would like to expand the studio to record other artists on a variety of projects.Jacob was curious what Mark is using to record in the studio. Mark mentioned that currently he is recording via Logic into his iMac. Mark is in the process of picking up a Universal Audio Apollo recording interface which will provide an array of plug-ins to expand the versatility of his studio.Getting into the DobroSteve was interested in how Mark got into playing the dobro. Mark started out in middle school and the first year of high school band. However, at the time, being a wrestler was his focus. Mark got back into music playing drums. A friend asked him to jam in his senior year in a band called Frisco Denaro.Mark’s first serious band started out with some friends playing together on acoustic guitars. He met up with Bed Fidler to create music for winter/sessions. In that band, Ben offered Mark his resonator guitar and he fell in love with the instrument. The band morphed into the self proclaimed “Rebels of Folk Grass”. Mark then got into the slide playing of Joe Wilson and Drew Howard. Mark did a great tour with Joe and Drew called Dobros Heal The World.Steve asked if Mark still has his Mule. He does, although he may need to sell it to make ends meet. A reminder to all our music fans that artists are hurting due to the pandemic. If you can buy music and merchandise during this tough time, it will go a long way to helping out.Mark’s Soundtrack to LifeEarlier, Mark mentioned the term “folk-grass” to describe the blending of genres that he started in winter/sessions. This hybrid of Americana continued with Lindsay Lou and ultimately within his solo work. Rick really dug that term and was curious how Mark got interested in the variety of music he enjoys and performs.Throughout Mark’s life, the soundtrack to his life has evolved. This soundtrack includes a variety of sounds from Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin to Bruce Springsteen. Mark’s first CD was a single by Snoop Dog “It’s a Doggy Dog World” which got him into west coast rap along with artists Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.Growing up, Mark’s brother played drums which influenced him to start off with drums. In addition, Mark’s dad is a guitar player and classic rock connoisseur. While there were guitars in the house, Mark didn’t tackle the instrument until he was a senior in high school. This would be the time he started playing with his buddy Ben (which eventually led to winter/sessions). It was during this time frame that Mark got into folk, bluegrass and bands like The Grateful Dead and Bela Fleck. The current soundtrack to Mark’s world when he isn’t making his own, is in Spanish. He is a big fan of Andres Calamaro. Mark feels his songwriting is impeccable. Favorite TuningsJacob was curious about what tunings Mark uses, hoping the question wasn’t too nerdy. Mark confirmed it was definitely nerdy, but given that most of us on this episode of Fans With Bands are guitar nerds, it’s all good. The dobro is tuned to open G (GBDGBD). However, Mark likes Open D or capo to an Open E to spice things up. On his 8 string slides Mark uses a C6 tuning. Hit up Mark for a full guitar lesson if you want to dive more into tunings.Drop Everything ArtistSteve wanted to know if there was a particular artist or group that Mark would drop everything to jam with. Mark laughed saying there are so many. At the top of the list is Billy Strings. Having had the opportunity to see Mark open up for Billy Strings and join him on stage, I can attest to this being a musical moment to savor.Mark would love to collaborate with artists in South and Central America given his love for the music from the region. In the course of our conversation, Mark shared that he has tons of ideas and is working pulling them together with an artist from Uruguay.Dream Show Wrap UpTo wrap-up our chat with Mark Lavengood, I asked everyone where they would love to go see (or play a show) and who they would see. Mark would be down with seeing and opening for Tedeschi Trucks at Red Rocks in Colorado. Jacob would love to be attending and performing at the Wheatland Music Festival in Michigan.Mark stole Steve’s idea of Red Rocks, so Steve shifted to The Caverns in Tennessee to see a show by Ariel Posen with Joey Landreth. Rick would love to check out a show at the legendary Ryman Auditorium in Nashville perhaps with Jason Isbell. For my part, I’d love to see Mark and Sturgill Simpson jam in my living room. In all seriousness Sturgill, if you need a mandolin or dobro player on your next tour, call up our friend Mark Lavengood.Dig into the stories, laughs, and much more in this episode of Fans With Bands with Mark Lavengood. Sharkey's Treehouse: Presenting New Musicians, Celebrating the Legends
David Luning is in the house! David’s band mates joined him in the studio for their latest cd “Restless” The Rink Studios (TRS) for us, with Ben Dubin on bass, Linden Reed on drums and Dave Sampson on guitar, and they’re a great bunch of guys. They sat down with me at my home base in Sacramento TRS and performed a four-song set from “Restless” in front of a live audience; and we didn’t want it end. ‘Restless” was produced and engineered by Karl Derfler. His credits include Tom Waits, Dave Matthews, Mother Hips, Smash Mouth and Live among many others. David has a lot of experience and miles under his feet in a relatively short amount of time. He attended Berkelee School of Music, he’s almost always constantly touring, and he’s an American Idol contestant. Keith Urban told him he had ”staunch originality, no one’s doing what you do…good singer songwriter, story-telling guy” and Jennifer Lopez commented on his performance saying “I love it. He has a really, really beautiful tone.” David writes, records and performs all of his own songs and he’ll talk about his process. He’ll also talk about the music industry as it is now and how it’s a double-edged sword. Luning is preparing to release his most dynamic and gripping collection to date, 'Restless,' and he can trace it all back to one fateful night that changed everything. His self- released debut album, 'Just Drop On By,' garnered acclaim from both critics and fellow musicians alike, with country megastar Keith Urban hailing Luning's "staunch originality." Songs from the album landed numerous film and TV placements, most recently on NBC's 'Grimm,' and Luning's reputation for exhilarating live performances earned him dates with luminaries like Jackie Greene, Dave and Phil Alvin, and Elvin Bishop, along with a slew of festival performances up and down the West Coast. Rebellious troubadour” as called by Rolling Stone, David Luning is celebrated for his compelling, dynamic live performances sharing the stage with Tedeschi Trucks, Chris Issak, Robert Earl Keen, Jay Leno, Son Volt, Jackie Greene among others. Luning’s sophmore album, 'Restless', showcases a collection of songs that explores themes of love, acceptance, and real life with a heartfelt universality. The Alternate Root hails, “He has set the bar high with thoughtful and unique styling, well-crafted lyrics and versatile vocals." Highlights of his career include the release of their new album Motel La Grange and having the pleasure of sharing the stage with Tedeschi Trucks, Amy Helm, John Moreland, Lukas Nelson and many more. Along with playing with his current band, Jon is also working on a solo project to be released this year. An excellent interview and a great guy!

Aaron and Joe delve deep into their memory banks as they share tales from the many concerts and music festivals they have experienced. As a musician it is incredibly important that you attend live shows: it fuels your passion for making your own music, it helps you learn how to build set-lists to hold an audience, it's FUN, and so much more. The guys talk about seeing bands like Rush, Big Something, Dave Matthews, Tom Petty, the Black Crowes, Metallica, Megadeath, Blink 182, Tedeschi Trucks, Pat Metheny, the Yellowjackets, Tito Puente, Mark Whitfield, Mike Stern, Bon Jovi, Jeff Healey, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hootie & The Blowfish, Billy Joel, Aerosmith, Phish, Umphrey's McGee, Jack White, Kanye West, Elton John, the Black Keys, Joe Bonamassa, Paul McCartney, Tori Amos, Iced Tea, Snoop Dog, Weezer, Stevie Nicks, Tool, Meshuggah, Yes, Gov't Mule, Prince, Danzig, Suicidal Tendencies, Flaming Lips, Skrillix, John Butler Trio, Green Sky Bluegrass, Ween, Sublime, Incubus, Cake, and many more!! When you see a live show you should keep in mind that the venue is going to dictate your experience. Often smaller venues provide a more intimate experience with the chance to really interact with the performers. Large arena concerts can be fun, but often the experience is dependent on your seats (pit vs. lawn, etc.) and the people you went with. The guys talk about specific venues from jazz clubs to warehouses to theaters to arenas. Aaron talks about his experience at the Milwaukee Metal Fest. Joe talks about the differences between the music festivals he has attended, from Bonnaroo, Firefly, Lockn, All Points West, and many local festivals. Different vibes, different lineups, different camping situations, different experiences. With so many different live music options available to us, there is no excuse to not get out there and see a show! Support your local musicians, experience a new genre of music, try camping out at a festival, or crowd surf for the first time (make sure your phone is in a secure pocket).
JJ Johnson may fly under the radar a bit, but that’s a conscious choice. The former drummer for John Mayer and current, longtime drummer for the Tedeschi Trucks band prefers to avoid social media, be present in the moment and focus on face to face interactions. Logos, posters, album covers, these are just a few of the items that leave an indelible mark on us; visually imprinting the look or vibe of a favorite band, book, or movie. Phil Yarnall, accomplished designer, and Tyler School of Art graduate, is the artist behind many such memorable creations. Not afraid to get his hands dirty and dig into the work, Phil has created incredible imagery for the Jimi Hendrix estate, Doyle Bramhall II, Rich Robinson, The Magpie Salute, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Janis Joplin, Ten Ton Mojo, and many others. When he's not creating iconic images he can be found working as a roadie for his son's band, Gilbert.
If anyone was born and raised to lead American roots music into the 21st century it was Derek Trucks. HIs name was lifted from an Eric Clapton album and by eleven years old it was clear he was a prodigy guitar player. His uncle Butch played drums for the Allman Brothers and his father was the band's road manager. So Derek grew up surrounded by a who's who of creative, improvising musicians. And at age 19, after years of sitting in, he was named an official member of that legendary band. Trucks has absorbed many guitar ideas and traditions and developed one of the most distinctive and admired instrumental voices in the world. We get into all that in an interview from backstage at the Ryman Auditorium where Derek's very large and very successful Tedeschi Trucks band recently performed over three consecutive nights. First though, a special report from the frontier of digital music. It's been a while since anything really new emerged from the world of streaming and downloading. Mostly what you read are complaints about the payouts artists and songwriters receive from Spotify, Apple Music and the rest of them. But there is now something new being deployed in the industry. It's definitely a bit technical, but whether you're a creator or a fan, you'll want to follow along. This could really change things.
Given his lineage, prowess and ability, it’s no surprise that teaming with his equally gifted wife Susan Tedeschi was bound to create an extremely rewarding project for Derek Trucks. 7 years in The Tedeschi Trucks Band has proven to be a musical tour de force (pun intended) and is now his sole focus. So when we sat down to talk about the Tedeschi Trucks upcoming live release Live from Oakland at The Fox which is also a must see film, I wasn’t surprised that he’s excited about where things are at….
