Over the past three decades, A.J. Croce has established his reputation as a piano player and vocal stylist who pulls from a host of musical traditions and anti-heroes — part New Orleans, part juke joint, part soul. From his 10 studio albums, it's clear that he holds an abiding love for all types of musical genres: Blues, Soul, Pop, Jazz, and Rock n' Roll. A virtuosic piano player, Croce toured with B.B. King and Ray Charles before reaching the age of 21, and over his career, he has performed with a wide range of musicians, from Willie Nelson to the Neville Brothers, to Béla Fleck and Ry Cooder. A.J. has also co-written songs with such formidable tunesmiths as Leon Russell, Dan Penn, Robert Earl Keen, and multi-Grammy winner Gary Nicholson. His albums have all charted on an impressive array of charts: Top 40, Blues, Americana, Jazz, College, and Radio 1. The Nashville-based singer/songwriter has landed 22 singles on a variety of Top 20 charts. His songwriting and style has evolved from Jazz & Blues on his debut and sophomore albums, to the roots-rock of the more recent collaborative recordings like Cantos with Ben Harper, Twelve Tales with Allen Toussaint, and Just Like Medicine with Vince Gill. He recently toured with his show "Croce Plays Croce" where he paid tribute to his father, singer/songwriter Jim Croce.

Joseph Dolce; born October 13, 1947) is an American-Australian singer, songwriter, poet and essayist. Dolce achieved international recognition with his multi-million-selling novelty song, "Shaddap You Face", released worldwide under the name of his one-man show, Joe Dolce Music Theatre, in 1980–1981. The single reached number one in 15 countries. It has sold more than 450,000 copies in Australia and continues to be the most successful Australian-produced single worldwide, selling an estimated six million copies. It reached No. 1 on the Australian Kent Music Report Singles Chart for eight weeks from November 1980. 1947–1977: Early year Dolce was born in 1947 in Painesville, Ohio, the eldest of three children to Italian American parents. He graduated from Thomas W. Harvey High School in 1965. During his senior year, he played the lead role of Mascarille in Moliere's Les Précieuses Ridicules for a production staged by the French Club of Lake Erie Frie College, which was his first time on stage, acting and singing an impromptu song he created from the script. The play was well-received and his performance was noted by director Jake Rufli, who later invited him to be part of his production of Jean Anouilh's Eurydice. His co-star in Les Précieuses Ridicules was a sophomore on a creative writing scholarship at Lake Erie College, Carol Dunlop, who introduced him to folk music, poetry and the writings of William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway. Dunlop later married the Argentine novelist Julio Cortazar. Dolce attended Ohio University, majoring in architecture, from 1965 to 1967 before deciding to become a professional musician. While attending college at Ohio University, in Athens, Ohio, he formed various bands including Headstone Circus, with Jonathan Edwards who subsequently went on as a solo artist to have a charting hit song in the US ("Sunshine"). Edwards subsequently recorded five Dolce songs including, "Athens County", "Rollin' Along", "King of Hearts", "The Ballad of Upsy Daisy" and "My Home Ain't in the Hall of Fame", the latter song becoming an alt country classic, also recorded by Robert Earl Keen, Rosalie Sorrels, JD Crowe & the New South and many others. 1978–1984: Move to Australia, "Boat People" and "Shaddap You Face" Dolce relocated to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, in 1978 and his first single there was "Boat People"—a protest song on the poor treatment of Vietnamese refugees—which was translated into Vietnamese and donated to the fledgling Vietnamese community starting to form in Melbourne. His one-man show, Joe Dolce Music Theatre, was performed in cabarets and pubs with various line-ups, including his longtime partner, Lin Van Hek. In July 1980, he recorded the self-penned 'Shaddap You Face", for the Full Moon Records label, at Mike Brady's new studios in West Melbourne. When in Ohio, Dolce would sometimes visit his Italian grandparents and extended family—they used the phrases "What's the matter, you?" and "Eh, shaddap", which Dolce adapted and used in the song. He wrote the song about Italians living in Australia and first performed it at Marijuana House, Brunswick Street, Fitzroy in 1979. It became a multi-million-selling hit, peaking at No. 1 on the Australian Kent Music Report Singles Chart for eight weeks from November 1980,in the UK from February 1981 for three weeks, and also No. 1 in Germany, France, Fiji, Puerto Rico, the Canadian province of Quebec, Austria, New Zealand and Switzerland. Dolce received the Advance Australia Award in 1981. The song has had hundreds of cover versions over the decades including releases by artists as diverse as Lou Monte, Sheila (France), Andrew Sachs (Manuel, of Fawlty Towers), actor Samuel L. Jackson and hip-hop legend KRS-One. In 2018, the first Russian language version was released by two of Moscow's most popular singers, Kristina Orbakaite and Philipp Kirkoroy. The song has been translated into fifteen languages, including an aboriginal dialect. By February 1981, it had become Australia's best-selling single ever selling 290,000 copies, entering the Guinness Book of World Records and surpassing the previous record of 260,000 copies by Brady's own "Up There Cazaly". "Shaddap You Face" has continued to be licensed and recorded by other artists and companies since its release in 1980 with its most recent appearance, in 2021, as part of the US series The Morning Show (aka, Morning Wars in Australia.) Follow up single, "If You Wanna Be Happy" was released in 1981 and charted in Australia and New Zealand. In December 1981, Dolce released the album Christmas in Australia, which peaked at number 92 on the Australian chart. 1984–present With Lin Van Hek , he formed various performance groups including Skin the Wig, La Somnambule (1984) and the ongoing Difficult Women (1993). Van Hek and Dolce co-wrote "Intimacy", for the soundtrack of the 1984 film The Terminator, now part of the US Library of Congress collection. He was a featured lead actor in the Australian film Blowing Hot and Cold (1988). He has continued to perform solo and with Van Hek as part of their music-literary cabaret Difficult Women. In 2010, two of his photos were selected for publication in the US journal, Tupelo Quarterly. Since 2009, he has been a prolifically published poet in Australia. In 2010, he won the 25th Launceston Poetry Cup at the Tasmanian Poetry Festival. His poems were selected for Best Australian Poems 2014 & 2015. Jordan Crosby Lee (guitar and vocals) is a born again North Carolinian originally from Texas. His love of Texas music still runs deep, and his conversational songwriting style is redolent of Robert Earl Keen and Bruce Robison. North Carolina native Jodi Hildebran Lee (drums, harmonica, and vocals) brings a more traditional/bluesy country dressing to their sound. Her voice is bold, brilliant, and hair-raisingly beautiful. Their sound is uniquely their own, but if a comparison must be made, think Violent Femmes meets Johnny & June. They cover everything from their love for each other to the rueful life of a Sasquatch hunter. The lyrics are nuanced, funny, and purposeful. The duo's first full-length album, "Songs for Butchie," is out now in three volumes. The album is named in honor of Jordan's late father, John Lee, who passed away on November 3, 2020, from a rare brain cancer. "Butchie" was undoubtedly the band's biggest fan, and his faith in Jordan and Jodi is what drove them to finally write and release this album. Melissa Clarke, Ph.D., of Americana Highways called their music on this album “witty and entertaining, even as the lyrics weave in serious topics to consider.” Canadian born but raised in Ireland, Cormac Russell has taken his music across the globe, including tours in England and China. He released his acclaimed seventh album titled 'Resurrection' last year, which won some very favourable reviews in the press, as well as airplay on national and international radio. He will be releasing his eighth LP titled 'The Water Came Rushing' this October. Playing all the instruments himself, he draws from a wide range of influences; from Neil Young and Bob Dylan, to literary giants like William Butler Yeats and James Joyce.

Chris Edwards, simply put, is a singer-songwriter rooted in the deep Pineywoods of East Texas. With a suitcase full of influences ranging from the old-time folk and country he grew up with (thanks to his grandparents' record collection) to more recent Texas troubadours like Robert Earl Keen into rockier territory like the Old 97's, Chris Edwards' blend of catchy melodies and literate lyrics prove that he is a songwriter, first and foremost, focusing on "just writing good songs." We enjoyed getting to sit down and have a conversation with Chris via Zoom. We learned a lot about his music, his approach to songwriting, what he loves about music and his new album, Homebrew, which is coming out on June 28th. Episode 184 “Time Has Come Today” with Jack Wisdom Jack Wisdom and David Capes have been friends for a number of years. They were elders together for a while of a downtown Houston Church. Jack is a devoted Christian, whose life has taken a hard turn in the last year. Perhaps more about that another time. He stopped by the Lanier Theological Library and joined David Capes on the Stone Chapel Podcasts. Who Is Jack Wisdom? Jack is a successful trial attorney who has lived in Texas for many years. His practice centers on labor law. He was a Dallas police officer before he and his wife, Diana, moved to Massachusetts so he could study at Gordon Conwell Seminary. He studied under some of the greats there. For decade Jack and his wife worked in Young Life. He's responsible for training, evangelizing, and bringing order to disordered teenage lives. Now he is the author of 3 books, all of which deserve reading. “Time Has Come Today” Time Has Come Today is the third book Jack Wisdom has written. They are definitely worth reading, because they are written by a person who knows whereof he speaks. He has studied well, works in the original languages, and combines good communication, writing, and humor. His chapters are short, as are his books. Taking his cue from Texas singer-songwriter, Robert Earl Keen, Jack makes a case that each moment we live is a gift from God. It can either be wasted by slacking off or by keeping yourself too busy. We decide daily, by the hour, by the moment, how to live. We have an adversarial relationship with time because of the fall. For most people, time is an endless succession of years, months, weeks, days and hour. Much of that without significance. But we can and ought to live in matters where this day, today, matters. Something great, important, life-changing can happen today. Watch particularly for Wisdom's distinction between two Greek words for time: chronos and kairos. Hello and welcome to a new episode and a new year Americana Podcast listeners. We're so happy to be back and we have a very exciting episode for you today to celebrate the new year. I'm particularly excited for this show because it really brings us to a full circle moment in the history of this podcast. From long-time audience members to latest episode listeners, you know that every episode features a break in programming to feature the wonderfully written recommendations from our friend and contributor Will Vogt. Will has been with us since the very first episode of the show and has been on the ground floor for many artists—kindly sharing with our audience who he's been listening to during his segment. Which brings us to this episode's guest- Hiss Golden Messenger. One of the first picks Will ever submitted was one detailing the works of M.C. Taylor, aka Hiss Golden Messenger. A native of California but long time North Carolina resident, Hiss Golden Messenger brings together the elements of soul, rhythmic rock, blues and experiential lyricism. His punk-rock DIY acumen combined with an elevated style of songwriting has garnered praise from both fans and critics alike, as well as grammy nominations. Elk Fence Distillery co-owners Scott Woodson and Gail Coppinger join Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras on Brew Ha Ha. The Elk Fence Distillery is a recently opened small-batch craft distillery that makes American single-malt whiskey, botanical gin and vodka. It has the distinction of being the only distillery located in the city of Santa Rosa, California. Juniper, coriander, tangerine and grapefruit all go into the botanical gin. They were supposed to open on March 14, 2020, the day that the state closed down for Covid. The Drive was on the air that day when Governor Newsome made the announcement. They had a party ready for 600 people that they had to cancel. Real Kentucky and Pennsylvania Learnin' They actually went to Kentucky and Pennsylvania to learn how to distill. The guy who made their equipment directed them to two schools where he knew they would learn how to operate his equipment. The gin ages in new American white oak barrels. It looks like a Sauvignon Blanc. Scott calls it Christmas in a glass. Their tasting room is at 464 Kenwood Court in Santa Rosa, open from 11am-4pm Fridays and Saturdays. It's across from Lithia Dodge, close to the studio. Their product is also in Bottle Barn, Wilibee's, Oliver's (soon) , Grossman's and Perch and Plow. The name Elk Fence comes from where they grow their barley, near a fence that separates 300 elk from all the dairy farmers out in Marin County where they live. Scott lives in Inverness and Gail lives in Point Reyes. Shorty's Bunkhouse on KWMR Gail also does a radio show on KWMR a listener-supported community station, on alternating Thursdays, 6:30pm–8:30pm. The show's name is Shorty's Bunkhouse and she plays bluegrass, americana and more. Check out the sample 2-hour show on her show's website. She started on the radio in 1997. Their signal is strong and can be heard in Sonoma County too. Steve Jaxon knows that station and likes it. He heard Robert Earl Keen playing Merry Christmas from the Family for the first time and they realize it was on her show.. Next they taste the American single-malt whiskey. They won a silver medal this year for this at the American Distilling Institute. The American distilling Institute founder is Bill Owens. (He is also the man who took a famous picture of violence at the ill-fated Rolling Stones concert at Altamont.) Next they shake up a cocktail called The Entitled Housewife, named after Becky Robinson, a performer that Herlinda also knows. Scott's original cocktail is made with their Golden Own barrel aged gin, Mr. Black coffee, some pecan liqueur, and club soda. Scott and Gail are Elks and Herlinda is a Moose and may become an Elk now. The Elks Club of Petaluma should come to Elk Fence and elk it up.

Like what you hear? Feel free to support the Show!https://tiptopjar.com/americanapodcastWe have a very special guest in this episode. Today, we're diving into the rich tapestry of the extraordinary songwriter, Gretchen Peters. Growing up next to the legendary Greenwich Village folk scene, before moving to Colorado where she cut her teeth as a performer, and finally settling in Nashville at the height of the traditional country to pop country split in the 90's and early aughts. Peters' story is something that music journalists and authors could only dream of living. And during all this time, she has etched her name into the annals of American music history with her poignant lyrics and haunting melodies. In the early '90s, Peters released her debut album, 'The Secret of Life,' which quickly garnered attention for its lyrical depth and Peters' distinctive, emotive voice. Throughout her illustrious career, Peters has penned songs that resonate with a raw, emotional honesty and capture complexities of the human condition. Her songs have been cut by the likes of Martina McBride and Trisha Yearwood, and has been a longstanding advocate for musician's rights in an increasingly complicated industry that looks more and more like a battleground everyday. Having recently retired from touring, it's time to take stock of Gretchen Peters' immeasurable impact on music. Her dedication to storytelling has earned her a place among the most revered songwriters of our time. So join us today as we speak with Gretchen Peters about her serendipitous career, women's music in country and Americana, and whether or not there really is a difference between being a songwriter and being a performer.
I had the chance to chat with Former judge and award-winning legal thriller author, Martin Clark, about writing legal thrillers, coming up with intriguing moral dilemmas for your characters to face, fly fishing in Montana and Tennessee, trusting in the justice system, the songwriting of Robert Earl Keen, and the provocative ending to his latest thriller, THE PLINKO BOUNCE. You'll also hear about Martin's choice of the best collection of short stories ever (the choice might surprise you!). Give it a listen!

After telling the story of the musicians who shaped his Oklahoma roots in his 2020 book Red Dirt, journalist and author Josh Crutchmer saw an opportunity to dig deeper into the artists that shaped independent roots music. His second book, The Motel Cowboy Show, is about the Americana music in the American West that began with cowboy poetry and lives on today in artists like Reckless Kelly, Micky and the Motorcars, and Ned LeDoux. A New York Times editor by day, Crutchmer also spent three years chronicling the return of the Turnpike Troubadours to the stage and studio for Rolling Stone, as well as the final concert for Robert Earl Keen. In this episode, he joins Rhett to talk about the path that led him to writing, how he approaches his role as a storyteller, and the personal obstacle he uncovered while working on his latest book. Doug Lane is the youngest of three children in a Navy family. His first musical memory was at age three. Doug always loved music with six years in piano, and picking up the saxophone in middle school. Doug's dad was a naval aviator, finishing his career in Kingsville, Texas. His father was the source of much childhood trauma. Doug grew up among ranchers, naval pilots, Mexicans, and college students. He was exposed to many different cultures and ideas. Doug was seven years old when his dad retired. Doug had no intention of following in his father's footsteps. The recruiter turned out to be very convincing, appealing to Doug's love of music. Doug joined the Army as a saxophonist, and picked up the guitar later on. Doug's primary mission was that of a musician, but his first role was always a soldier. Military bands perform at ceremonial functions, parades, PR, diplomatic functions, and funerals. Music brings tradition to the military. Two to three months after Operation Iraqi Freedom ensued, Doug and fellow soldiers relieved the 3rd infantry division. Doug was fortunate in that he saw little of the violence that other solderis endured. There were adjustments to the daily rocket attacks. He counts himself lucky that no one in his unit was seriously injured. Doug's issues in Iraq centered around poor leadership and medical care. He feels the Iraqi workers get painted with a broad stroke. Doug found most of them amazing; and he is grateful to their wives who provided the soldiers with food during lean times. Doug is proud to have offered relief to soldiers as he played for them in Iraq. Doug found his faith in Iraq. Raised Catholic, Doug was not a believer. Studying the Bible forced him to find answers to questions. Doug experienced the concept of grace when he realized he could never be good enough. Doug FOUND REST IN GOD!. Doug's wife was a soldier as well. They deployed together. Fifteen months of the their first two years was spent living in separate tents. The strain on marriages in these circumstances is astounding, but they managed to weather the storm. Doug was in the army for four years. Tired of the army BS, he did not re-enlist. Looking back, Doug can see how his bad attitude and immaturity contributed to his dissatisfaction. Doug is the front man for his band, The Real Doug Lane Band. Accused of being a country band, he maintains they also play blues and classic rock. Pink Floyd and Billy Joel are heavy influences, along with Guy Cook and Robert Earl Keen. Doug has released two albums, 1 EP, and a few singles. He aims to share his stories through the songs. Doug has dealt with suicidal thoughts his entire life, stemming from childhood trauma. Doug came close to suicide a few years back. The pressure of life was too much. Their was no way out. He has found relief in ketamine treatments. Following the ketamine treatments, it was the first time the voices in his head went quiet. Doug has been a pastor for 20 years. His advice to anyone struggling with mental illness, "God is NOT angry at you because of your depression. Melissa Clarke, Ph.D., of Americana Highways called their music on this album “witty and entertaining, even as the lyrics weave in serious topics to consider.” They also just wrapped filming a commercial for a fancy ad agency, but they can't talk about it until it comes out almost a year from now…but, they are super stoked about it. They also got a few songs into a sync library in 2022, so they've got their fingers crossed they might show up somewhere on your TV or computer soon...
Reid has the privilege of spending an hour talking with singer, songwriter, hunter, and Texas icon Robert Earl Keen. Having retired from the road after 41 prolific years, REK discusses settling into life in the Texas Hill Country, taking a bit more time to hunt birds and deer, and the amusement provided by a pair of English Cockers. The conversation wanders into REK·s youthful forays with a .410, the joys of south Texas bobwhites, and the magic of a good story, spoken or sung. A great chat with a lovely guy. More on REK·s current work here and via his Americana Podcast on all major platforms.
It's a new year Americana Podcast listeners! And with a new year, means new discussions on what makes Americana… well Americana. When we look at this genre, we talk a lot it's history and its future. And over time we've been able to piece together this ongoing timeline and certain elements that are key to its existence. Base influences in songwriting, certain instrumentation, and geography. If you've been a long-time listener, you'd know that many of our previous guests have attributed a great deal of their musical identity to where they learned music from. This of course is a holdover from the new world mentality in the west, where many genres developed due to particularly regional and social integrations over extended periods of time. When looking at Americana we are specifically looking at the European folk trad to bluegrass, blues to rock, and then rock and bluegrass to country as we know it today. That's a lot of words to basically say the place that you identify as home, has as significant of an effect on your musical education as who's albums you choose to listen to growing up. And Kentucky aside, some of the artists that know that best are from Texas and Oklahoma. There's a lot of opinions on the state of Red Dirt Music and Texas Country. Developing as sub genres in the late 80's to early 00's, this very regional brand of music came up in response to commercial country. And I'm not talking Florida Georgia Line commercial, I'm talking Tim McGraw commercial. Who we love. But there's a lot of ups and downs and opinions in the overall conversation but the general one is that Red Dirt and Texas Country became a space for outsiders beyond the Nashville standard. Piggybacking off of the outlaw movement and the historical legacies of artists, particularly Texas native Willie Nelson, these scenes were able to flourish in their respective regions and began to go a bit beyond. They were in a position to challenge the value of industry effect in radio versus organic growth in listenership. They developed loyal followings, local radio play. The works. But due to a long series of unfortunate commercial circumstances, the scenes have presently been relegated very much south of the red river. And I could go on about this, but fortunately this episode you can it straight from the quarter horse's mouth. Americana Podcast speaks with the artists who possibly have the most pertinent opinions on the state of Red Dirt and Texas Country and their weight in the views of Americana music. On this episode we have musical and actual giant Ray Benson from Asleep at The Wheel. Defender of the Dance Hall Randy Rogers, Okie not from Muskogee Jason Boland of Jason Boland and the stragglers, young blood William Beckmann, whip smart Wade Bowan, and philanthropist at heart Josh Abbott. Saddle up and enjoy the show.
