Todd has somewhat jokingly called "Hello It's Me" his albatross but it's arguably his most well-known song. What day of the week is better than a Monday to discuss an albatross :-)?! We will be playing a total of 17 different versions of "Hello It's Me" to include but not limited to: Live versions Reconstructed versions The original Nazz version with Stewkey on lyrics From The David Letterman Show with Paul Shaffer NYE 2008 bootleg with a great Todd rant Todd in Amsterdam with the fabulous Metropole Orchestra You will hear some very unique versions, some of you might love and some you might hate, and odds are good you will hear a version you've never heard before!
Singer-songwriter, producer, cult hero and soon to be published author Todd Rundgren is approaching his 70th birthday and yet he shows no signs of slowing down. Todd already has major projects lined up for next year including collobarations with The Lemon Twigs, an autobiography, a big Toddstock 7.0 birthday bash...or two or three, and who knows what else.We didn't talk about "Bat Out of Hell" or "Hello It's Me," instead we dished on some topics Todd doesn't get asked a lot about (that's because I am a bit of a TR geek myself.) We even discuss the New Cars. This felt like one of my best interviews, and I hope that you feel the same way. I can assure you there is a lot more Todd Rundgren in my archives, or as Todd might say," There's always more..."
Mutlu opened for Todd Rundgren in 2016 at the Daytona Beach concert and he has recorded a cover of "Hello It's Me". He is the only artist besides Todd that has been a guest on Live From Daryl's House two times. Mutlu is a soulful, singer-songwriter. A Philadelphia native and first-generation American of Turkish descent, Mutlu has already built a substantial fan base in his hometown, while winning widespread praise for his prior releases. He's collaborated and toured extensively as a support act with legendary duo Daryl Hall & John Oates and holds the distinction of having made the most guest appearances on Daryl Hall's acclaimed, award-winning TV/Internet show "Live From Daryl's House". He's also gained considerable attention for his work with noted singer-songwriter Amos Lee, with whom he's toured extensively as a support act and backup vocalist. He was the support act on the North American leg of Joe Jackson's acclaimed "Rain" tour and has shared stages with the likes of Adele, Katy Perry, John Hiatt, Leon Russell, the Blind Boys of Alabama, Todd Rundgren, Shuggie Otis & many more. Born Mutlu Onaral, he grew up steeped in Philadelphia's deep R&B traditions, eagerly absorbing the fundamentals of old-school soul music and incorporating it into his own musical persona. His local success led to a recording deal with Manhattan/EMI Records, which released his acclaimed 2008 debut album Livin' It, produced by the late, great T-Bone Wolk, and featuring guest appearances by Daryl Hall, Amos Lee, G. Love and Raheem DeVaughn. His latest release is the Hypnotize EP which he co-produced with songwriter/producer Darius Amendolia.
In advance of the September release of Chris Jasper's new CD "Share With Me," we are releasing Chris's new single, the classic "You Are So Beautiful." Chris's rendition of "You Are So Beautiful" illustrates his unique arranging and vocal abilities, expanding on his lush arrangements of covers, such as "Hello It's Me," "Summer Breeze," and "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight"...which he produced and arranged and made them R&B classics for the Isley Brothers. They say you can take the girl out of Brooklyn, but you can't take Brooklyn out of the girl. Let's Do Lunch! guest Susan Collins is testament to that with her one-woman show You Can Take The Girl Outta of Brooklyn (But You Can't Take Brooklyn Outta The Girl), chronicling her East Flatbush upbringing and adventures in the music business through words and music. Susan joins host Robin Milling over lunch at Cornelia Street Cafe, just blocks away from where she got her start, Cafe Wha! in Greenwich Village. She would hitchhike to the club from Brooklyn for open mics, meeting the one and only Jimi Hendrix, who was so taken with the teenaged Collins he asked her sing with his band, Jimmy James & The Blue Flames. Amongst her many claims to fame, Susan penned A Letter To Patty about Patty Hearst for the new show Saturday Night Live, where she became the voice behind Gilda Radner singing Jewess Jeans which is now part of the Jewish Museum. She sang vocals with Todd Rundgren on Hello It's Me, and Odyssey's Native New Yorker. The late Ellie Greenwich is her dearest friend, who co-wrote the theme song for her show. A great storyteller who doesn't hold back which is the Brooklyn in her; telling Robin why she chose not to duet with Bruce Springsteen for starters.

The most excellent Slau (his podcast: SessionsWithSlau.com) joins me for this interview. Hailed in the early stage of his career as a new pop-wunderkind, supported by the certified gold solo double LP Something/Anything? in 1972, Rundgren's career has produced a diverse range of recordings as solo artist, and during the seventies and eighties with the band Utopia. He has also been extremely active as a producer and engineer on the recorded work of other musicians. During the 1970s and 1980s, Rundgren produced big-selling albums, including Bat Out of Hell by Meat Loaf, We're an American Band by Grand Funk Railroad, and Skylarking by XTC. In the 1980s and 1990s his interest in video and computers led to Rundgren's "Time Heals" being the eighth video played on MTV, and "Change Myself" was generated on commercially available Amiga Computers. His best-known songs include "Hello It's Me" and "I Saw the Light" which have heavy rotation on classic rock radio stations, and "Bang the Drum All Day" featured in many sports arenas, commercials, and movie trailers.
