Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! Why do you like the music you do?  Is it as simple as “It's what I heard on the radio”? Or something deeper? People with elder siblings may be exposed to music earlier than first children.   Jeff had an older brother, so was exposed earlier to cool music - Beatles, Janis, Hendrix, and so on.  Mick was the eldest in his family and had to find his own taste. (No surprise considering what he listens to!) Were you bullied as a child?  Influence!  Did you share music with your friends?  Influence!  Did you have access to a good radio station?  Or print media?  Influence!! We talk about our early influences – musical & otherwise – and look at how they played a role in what we listen to today.    In Rock News, Ringo has released a country album, and Toto is touring.  Oh well, shouldn't take them long to play their 3 hits. You know Jeff's obsessed with AI, so he asked three AI brands to nominate the greatest albums of 1971.  Not much variation, really.  One day, we may ask them to understand quality, rather than sales figures, and see what they give us.    Our Album You Must Listen to Before you Die is “Blue” by Joni Mitchell - an top grade album that deserves to be here.  Mick references Atlantic Records' sampler called “Very Together” which featured “Carey” from this album, and pointed out a link between Joni Mitchell and Scottish hard rock band, Nazareth. How did YOUR tastes develop?  Drop us a line & let us know. Enjoy! References:  RAM Magazine, Rock Australia Magazine, Countdown, Molly Meldrum, 2DoubleJay, The Magus/Holger Brockman, Chris Winter, Mac Cocker, “Never Mind the Bollocks”, The Sex Pistols, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, David Bowie, “Five Years”, “Room to Move”, Chris Winter, “Starman”, “Rock'n'roll Suicide”, Birdland, Weather Report, Joe Zawinul, Brian Eno, “Another Green World”, “Zawinul Lava”, “Rock'n'Roll Animal”, Lou Reed, Steve Hunter, “Sweet Jane”, “Heroin”, “Rock'n'Roll”, Berlin, Alice Cooper, Velvet Underground, Peter Gabriel, “Car”, “Stranded”, Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry, “Song for Europe”, “Street Life”, “Psalm”, Sisters of Mercy, XTC, Nico, REM, Television, Patti Smith, “Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band”, The Beatles, "Within You Without You”, “Tomorrow Never Knows”, Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, Like a Rolling Stone”, Revolver, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Simon and Garfunkel, Pearl, Janis Joplin, Tapestry, Carole King, Slade Alive, Hot August Nigh”, “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”, “Dark Side of the Moon”, “Led Zeppelin IV”, “Silk Degrees”, Box Scaggs, “Journey to the Centre of the Earth”, Rick Wakeman, “Woodstock”, “Monterey Pop”, “The Song Remains the Same”, “The Last Waltz”, The Guitar Spa, Redeye Records, John Foy, bootleg records, “His Master's Voice”, “Sheetkeeckers”, Australian electronica/dance music store, Hipgnosis, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Regurgitator, “I like your old stuff better than your new stuff", DeepSeek, ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Blue, Joni Mitchell, Henry Lewy, “Very Together”, “This Flight Tonight”, Nazareth  Episode Playlist  The first song played by 2DoubleJay - “You Just Like Me ‘Cos I'm Good in Bed”

The influence of "Hilly Fields" has been noted on Bevis Frond, Robyn Hitchcock, Robert Wyatt, and XTC's psychedelic alter egos the Dukes of Stratosphear, as well as the hypnagogic pop movement of the 2000s. In September 2014, Lo Records released Nicely's second full-length album, Space of a Second. A third Nick Nicely album, Sleep Safari, was released on 26 September 2017 through Tapete Records. In 2018, "Hilly Fields" appeared in the Timothee Chalamont film Hot Summer Nights. From the start of 2018 Nicely has been working on live performances accompanied by the musician Bug Lover and generating new versions of old tracks and adding visuals. First came secret gigs in Frappant (February and April) in Hamburg, then on 14 June 2018 at the Electric Ballroom in London supporting John Maus, followed by a December show in Moscow and then a US East coast tour again with Maus in 2019.

In this episode of The Music Production Podcast, I sit down with musician and songwriter Jean-Paul Vest, the driving force behind Last Charge of the Light Horse. We talk about the evolution of songwriting, the impact of place and sound on music, and the delicate balance between control and spontaneity in the creative process. Jean-Paul shares his approach to writing, how his songs take shape over time, and the unexpected ways music resonates with listeners. We also dive into the role of nostalgia, the value of quiet spaces, and why playing music with friends is one of the greatest joys of being a musician. Listen on Apple, Spotify, YouTube Main Topics Discussed: Songwriting and Identity – How artists evolve over time and whether they should brand themselves or stay fluid in their musical identity. Letting Creativity Flow – The challenge of balancing technical skill with raw inspiration and why stepping back can lead to better songs. Sound and Place – How environments, from noisy cities to quiet deserts, influence musical perception and creativity. The Role of Collaboration – Learning to trust bandmates and fellow musicians rather than dictating every detail. Reinvention in Music – How artists like Beck and XTC reinvent themselves and what we can learn from their approach. Music as a Personal Archive – Songs as layered stories, much like a “palimpsest,” revealing new meaning over time. Field Recording and Natural Soundscapes – Using organic sounds in music and the impact of noise pollution on creativity. Key Takeaways: Step Back and Let the Song Lead – Trying too hard to control the songwriting process can stifle creativity. Let ideas develop naturally. Your Environment Shapes Your Sound – Whether it's a reverb-heavy church or the silent stillness of a desert, soundscapes influence the way music is made. Not Every Song is an Autobiography – Just because a song is personal doesn't mean it's literally about the songwriter. Sometimes, music is a character study. The Right Audience Makes a Difference – Playing in an intimate setting vs. a bar can completely change how a song is received. Music is a Long Game – Success isn't just about radio play; it's about the relationships and experiences built through music-making. The awesome albums keep coming early in 2025 and we'd love to introduce on to you today. Welcome to Episode 55 of This is Not Happening (TINH), an Album of the Month (AOTM) Podcast. In Part 1 we deep dive into an Album that one of us has chosen and in Part 2 we play 'Spin it or Bin it'.  We pick a theme and each pick a song that represents that theme. We judge the selections by asking the question 'Spin It or Bin It'?In Part 1, Nolan, resident Hip Hop head stays true to form and brings a new album from a 47 year old artist! Brother Ali's 'Satisfied Soul'. In Part 2, following Brother Ali's exploration of peace, love, faith and religion, our Spin It or Bin It, our theme this month is 'Religion'.                               ----- Part 1 | Brother Ali | Satisfied Soul -----Nolan has been trying to introduce Brother Ali to us for years but ... there's a lot of music and not a lot of time. Previous album releases have not lined up with podcasts but this time they did! Satisfied Soul is an album that is worth any music fan spending some time with. It is not a niche hip hop album for niche hip hop fans. It's soul music. It's pop music. It's Hip Hop. It's intelligent. It's massively thought provoking and massively accessible to anyone with an open mind and an open ear. Get on it. Please.Listen to the albumhere. This track is not from this album ... but too good not to share Cadillac.Nolan's awesome 'Intro to Brother Ali' playlist can be found here.Buy some stuff here.                                            ----- Part 2 | Spin It or Bin It | 'Religion' -----Popular music and religion have been uncomfortable bedfellows since ... forever. We agreed to each select a track that 'tackles' the theme of religion in any way shape or form;Joey chose Tennessee by Arrested Development.David chose Dear God by XTC.Guy chose Stand on the Wordby The Joubert Singers.Nolan chose Name of God by Mustafa. Here is a link to a this 4 track playlist. We've been writing the blog for years come and have a look - https://thisisnothappening.net/

A well-placed song in a film holds the power to shape a viewer's emotions, heighten tension, set the tone, foreshadow events, provide insight into characters, or deepen the narrative. In essence, music is the heartbeat of the cinema that can elevate a film from good to sublime. Take it from someone who knows, like this week's Third Lad, Barry Andrews - he's had songs soundtracking pivotal moments in films such as Manhunter and Band of the Hand. Barry Andrews began his professional music career in the punk era lending his keyboard stylings to a little band that you may have heard of, XTC, giving them one of the most defining and distinctive features of their sound for their first two albums. After leaving XTC in 1979, he released a fine solo EP and single, formed the short lived Restaurant for Dogs, and played with Iggy Pop and Robert Fripp's League of Gentlemen before forming the band Shriekback with Gang of Four bassist Dave Allen and singer Carl Marsh in 1981. For the better part of the last 43 years, Barry has kept Shriekback alive through various incarnations, continuing to release music that's daring, experimental, and artful, as well as maintaining an ambitious and rewarding solo career. Mark Chester aka Ginnels released their first album in a decade, The Picturesque, on February 7. He talks about what he's been up to (becoming a dad of two, mostly), playing with Autre Monde and why they've come to an end, songwriting, nostalgia, Popical Island, and lots more. Buy The Picturesque: https://ginnels.bandcamp.com/album/the-picturesque --- Press release: Ginnels never let up. Though it has been, staggeringly, eight long years since the last irresistible jangle pop transmission under the Ginnels moniker, nothing much has changed in Mark Chester's approach when it comes to the practice of music making, even if much everything else for Chester has seen considerable flux – he's now a father of two, and most shockingly of all for an indie popster of his ilk, gainfully employed. “It definitely started the same way all Ginnels stuff starts,” Chester explains, “which is just me looking through five years of phone demos and going ‘that's a decent song' and ‘that's a decent song', and if you keep that up then you have a full album.” The man himself might be coyly committed to making his process sound as pedestrian as possible, but from the moment the delicate chiming introduction of album opener ‘The Body Was Gone' goes widescreen – revealing an expanded sonic palette richer in timbre and exponentially wider in scope than anything Chester has let out into the world thus far – it is apparent that “The Picturesque” is poised to be less than parochial in its sonic purview. From here, “The Picturesque” plays like a gauzy road trip Super 8 footage cutting between scenes of sunset at Monument Valley and B-roll from around middle-Ireland, entirely soundtracked by some enchanted mixtape of heretofore unheard B sides from REM, XTC and The Go-Betweens, unexpected guest appearances from the surprisingly together-sounding ghost of Johnny Thunders and snippets from your coolest friends' unreleased instrumental experiments. All liberally rippled with Chester's unique ear for melody and appetite for the unexpected when it comes to crafting guitar parts. And this, by design, feels like a Guitar Record, above all else. For all its effortlessly sticky lyrical and melodic twists, “The Picturesque” separates itself within the mighty Ginnels catalogue in both the dexterity in playing and diversity in tone on show across these 12 tracks. And 12, of course as we know, being the optimum number of tracks for any LP to have, so bonus points for that too.

Darryl Bullock was a massive fan of XTC, an avid record collector and one of the tireless organisers of the online and in-person XTC fan conventions. He died, way too young, on 23 December 2024.He was such a pillar of the fan community that this month's episode of What Do You Call That Noise? The XTC Podcast is dedicated to him – with thoughts especially for his husband Niall Milligan. As well as tributes from those who knew him, the podcast features a previously unreleased interview Darryl did with the artist Ken White at the XTC fan convention in Swindon in 2022. Ken painted several murals around Swindon, including the much missed Swindon celebrities mural, as well as painting the backdrop for the cover of XTC's Black Sea.Music from Dan Barrow.Darryl Bullock links:Love and Fury: The Life, Death and Legacy of Joe Meek is published in the UK by Omnibus on 13 March 2025Blog The World's Worst Records XTC collection On collectingInterviewing John LeckieOn XTC from an LGBTQI+ perspectiveDan Barrow and The Florida RecountsKen White: Muralist and Painter, Amberley PublishingWhat Do You Call That Noise? This is epic. XTC guitarist Dave Gregory returns to the podcast to give us all the scoop on the creation of XTC's 1986 masterpiece Skylarking. The album almost can't be listened to without an understanding of the behind the scenes stories - the animosity between Andy Partridge and producer Todd Rundgren chief among them. This essential album was recently given the Steven Wilson Dolby Atmos treatment enhancing it even more. Joining us for this conversation is our friend Brad Page of the I'm In Love With That Song podcast for an even richer experience. Dave was extremely gracious with his time, you won't want to miss this.  www.amazon.com/Skylarking-Blu-Ray-Audio-Steven-Wilson/dp/B0D9P39NYH www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod
