Welcome back to When Words Fail, Music Speaks—the podcast where host James Andrew Cox battles depression with the healing power of song. In today's episode, James sits down with New Jersey‑born singer‑songwriter Greg Amici, a musician who literally sang his way out of a 16‑year silence after a vocal‑cord injury forced him off the stage.Greg shares the story of his early love for vinyl classics—from Steely Dan and The Who to XTC and The Kinks—how those influences shaped his own witty, heart‑on‑sleeve style, and why he calls his breakthrough solo record Tragicomic “lyrics first, tragedy meets comedy.” Listeners will hear behind‑the‑scenes tales of the NJ/NY underground scene, the eye‑opening moment he discovered a polyp on his vocal cord, the long road back to CMJ, and the creative process behind his standout track “Girl Next Door.”From nostalgic debates about Beatles vs. Stones to a lightning‑round of coffee vs. tea, the conversation stays candid, funny, and deeply personal—exactly the kind of musical therapy James promised. Whether you're a DIY artist, a longtime fan, or simply looking for a reminder that music can pull you through the darkest chapters, this episode delivers inspiration, humor, and a fresh look at what it means to keep singing when words fall short.Stay tuned, press play, and let Greg's story remind you: music is the one aspect of life that keeps us wanting to live as long as we can.

John Leckie is one of British rock’s greatest producers, who started out as a tape operator at Abbey Road in 1970, thrown immediately into sessions for George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass and John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Band. This interview, conducted live at The CAT Club in September 2025, focuses on Sunburst Finish, the Be Bop Deluxe album that gave Leckie his first official production credit, and covers both the making of the album and his creative partnership with Bill Nelson. Additionally, Leckie gives a first-hand account of Syd Barrett’s unannounced appearance during the Wish You Were Here sessions, an encounter he stumbled into while raiding Pink Floyd’s beer fridge, only for Roger Waters to stop the tape and ask who the stranger standing next to him was. The Q&A session draws out further stories about working with The La’s, the Stone Roses’ debut, and how XTC – who idolised Bill Nelson, led Leckie to leave EMI and go independent. Scot and Jeff discuss the second part of XTC's career (1984-2000) with Andrew Gretes. Introducing the Band: Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) with guest Andrew Gretes. Andrew is a fiction writer teaching creative rhetoric at Georgetown and George Washington University. You can find his work at andrewgretes.com. Andrew's Music Pick: XTC, Pt. 2 Awaken you dreamers! A month after we took you through the first part of XTC's career – an Argonaut-like journey across the world of postpunk and pop during the end of the Seventies and the start of the Eighties – we return to pick up the story where we left off in 1984: with a psychologically landlocked band (songwriters Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding as well as guitarist Dave Gregory), now forever off the road and consigned to a studio, forced to make the most of their remaining careers without fears of an audience to either drag them down or lift them up. And aside from the Beatles, it is little exaggeration to say that no studio-bound act ever made quite as much out of such a fate as XTC – though they didn't make much money, naturally. Instead they made great art, with a series of increasingly ambitious pop albums (including 1986's Skylarking, which you might even have heard of) that reflected the expanding musical palates and melodic ambitions of Partridge and Moulding.  The first episode of this two-part series proudly featured some of the weirdest, most clashingly irregular sounds of the Seventies. This second features some of the most awe-striking beauty you've probably never heard. From their mainstream career (which rarely if ever sold) to their moonlight lark as the Dukes of Stratosphear (which sold gangbusters until people realized they were buying XTC music) Partridge, Moulding and Gregory never quit stuffing every single song they recorded with meaning and melody, and the results are an overwhelming trove of musical riches to discover – one you might only be vaguely aware even exists Political Beats has been building up to its XTC episodes ever since the day the podcast was founded. The second part of their story is every bit as impressive – and different – as the first. Settle in and listen to us sing a happy-sad ballad about the greatest band in popular music to never quite make it. Oh my, oh my, don't it make you wanna cry? Part 2 of this splendid conversation with XTC guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Dave Gregory picks up with the band's ill-fated 1982 trip to the U.S. and the end of its touring days. How did he deal with the financial ramifications? Was it necessary for XTC to stop touring to reach its subsequent creative heights? Was the studio Gregory's happy place, or did he long to be back on stage? How did he balance virtuosity vs. trying to play the perfect part for each song? Which XTC songs did he most regret not being able to play live? Could he still play a frenetic song like “Scissor Man”? Are more “Live Boots” recordings coming? Gregory also revisits his exit from the band and relates the current state of XTC and grudge-holding. Did he see Colin Moulding's and Terry Chambers' TC&I project or Chambers' EXTC tribute band? And does he think the XTeeHee parodies on YouTube are by none other than Andy Partridge?

We're so happy to welcome back to Caropop one of our favorite musicians, XTC guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Dave Gregory. The occasion is the Record Store Day release—and upcoming CD—of XTC's fast, furious performance on Live Boots: Emerald City, Cherry Hill, New Jersey, 17th April 1981. In Pt. 1 of this two-parter, Gregory discusses why the band played everything at such breakneck speed and whether he admires or regrets that approach now; what he thinks of the “bootleg” sound quality; how XTC approached concerts differently in the U.S. and U.K.; whether XTC might have lasted longer as a live band if frontman Andy Partridge didn't throw himself so intensely into each performance; how (or whether) Gregory's ears survived the tour; which guitars he took on the road; and how the band's live attack differed on 1982's abortive English Settlement tour. We also go down a Rickenbacker rabbit hole.

Scot and Jeff discuss the first part of XTC's career (1977-1983) with Andrew Gretes. Andrew's Music Pick: XTC There may be no language in our lungs to tell the world just how we feel about this band, but here we give you a three-hour explanation -- with many clips to illustrate where words fail -- why XTC is arguably the great lost group of the rock era. In the early Seventies, in a rural English nowheresville named Swindon, songwriters Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding got together with local drum-thwacker Terry Chambers to form a local trio with decidedly quirky, non-chart sensibilities. Later they were joined by keyboardist Barry Andrews and began to slowly build a national profile in the (by then) post-punk scene. And only slightly later than that, they decided they were interested in developing those chart sensibilities after all -- but without dropping even one bit of their quirk.  But the story of this band is best told by their music -- and it's practically criminal that it isn't universally celebrated this world over. A decades-long career filled with nothing but one sparklingly intelligent post-punk and pop gem after another, XTC was always out of step with their times, always resolutely unassimilable to the true mainstream, always just a bit too self-consciously thoughtful.  And eventually they made their grudging peace with it, resigned to always be that “great” group that might have scored a hit or two, might have bubbled around the Top 20 every few years or so during the 1980s, but whose impact was heard in the countless subsequent groups they influenced. The story of XTC is a musical tale that will inspire anyone who cares about true songcraft, one filled with immense optimism and joy as well as some of the bitterest sociological observations to be put into British song.  Political Beats has been building up to its XTC episodes (this is the first of two) ever since the day the podcast was founded. The second part of their story is every bit as impressive -- and different -- as the first. All hail the amazing crash-boom-band. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Toch?

Athens, GA didn't just produce great bands; it produced a whole value system. When Trent Allen from Dreams So Real joins us, we get into why Athens carried “artsy credibility,” why Atlanta bands sometimes got brushed off, and how those scene politics affected real careers, real audiences, and real opportunities. We also zoom in on the moment when underground experimentation started turning into something more intentional: tighter songwriting, bigger goals, and the push to tour and get signed. That's where the “selling out” debate gets messy. We talk about why wanting radio play and a broader audience isn't automatically a compromise and why making music that connects can be its own kind of integrity.Along the way, Trent shares the influences that shaped him, from The Beatles to XTC, plus stories that only happen when you're close to the heart of a scene. If you love Athens music history, '80s alternative rock, and the behind-the-scenes truth about how bands survive, hit play, then subscribe, share the show with a friend, and leave us a review.Learn Something New orRemember Something OldPlease like and follow the Music in My Shoes Facebook and Instagram pagesReach out to us at musicinmyshoes@gmail.comSend us a one-way message. Scot and Jeff discuss The Apples in Stereo with Jack Butler. Introducing the Band: Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) with guest Jack Butler. Jack is deputy editor for Free Expression, a new newsletter about politics and culture from the Wall Street Journal opinion page. Previously he was submissions editor for National Review Online. You can follow him on Twitter/x @jackbutler4815. And unless you're a 2:30 marathoner, you probably can't follow him in real life — unless he lets you.  Jack's Music Pick: The Apples in Stereo Get ready for sunshine melodies, fuzzed-out guitars, and pure pop sweetness, because we're diving into the colorful world of The Apples in Stereo. On this episode, we walk through the band's discography album by album, tracing how Robert Schneider and company blended psychedelia, power pop, and a DIY spirit into a signature sound. You might not be familiar with the band (yet), but you know the influences -- The Beatles, ELO, XTC, Pavement, Guided by Voices, The Beach Boys. We travel from the lo-fi charm of Fun Trick Noisemaker to the "space disco" feel of Travellers in Space and Time. Along the way, Scot takes the proper time to pay tribute to an all-time favorite album, New Magnetic Wonder, and we discuss the unorthodox ways the band found its way into children's programming. Plus Hilarie Sidney gets her due as an excellent and underrated singer, songwriter, and drummer.  Schneider's interest in science, space, and sound influenced the band's later work specifically, with conceptual elements and unconventional recording approaches shaping their music. New Magnetic Wonder even touts Schneider's invention of a new musical scale: the "Non-Pythagorean scale" (he's now a mathematics professor at Northern Michigan University, so it all makes sense in the end).  Throughout the years, the band kept pushing forward without losing a sense of wonder and experimentation that defined their earliest work and refined their ability to create hooks and melodies that lodge inside your brain for weeks at a time. And you can't tell the story of The Apples in Stereo without diving into the world of the Elephant 6 Recording Company, the loose collective of like-minded musicians that helped spark an indie-pop movement in the '90s. Jack takes the lead in describing this element of the show. This episode is a celebration of melody, creativity, and the joy of making something delightfully strange. It'll fill you with energy. Get Summer Bash tix here  |  Follow Dr Strange for Live Strange here Topics Include: Bill Plaster of Dr. Strange Records joins to discuss the upcoming Summer Bash. Punk Rock Bowling's cancellation — visa bans, politics, venue loss — created the opportunity. Bill connected with Gallo, who runs the Fox Theater and the Cathedral in Pomona. The Cathedral: a stunning, refurbished 1921 four-story YMCA venue hosting the event. A massive two-day lineup — 30-plus bands across punk, hardcore, and old-school SoCal. Notable acts include the Effigies, Channel 3, the Skulls, featuring Kevin from Green Day. Every band asked said yes — Bill takes no money, purely doing it for the community. Dealing with booking agents was the biggest headache of organising the festival. Planning started in November; Bill hopes Summer Bash becomes an annual event. The Punk in the Park cancellations discussed — Bill argues protest with your vote, not boycotts. Bill credits Rod for building Dr. Strange's social media profile and making the festival possible. Bill's mentorship philosophy: punk rock can genuinely change lives for the better. The Dr. Strange "family" ethos — making fun of people with love, never punching down. Bill's book discussed — early punk discoveries via Damned, Buzzcocks, and XTC seven-inches. The brutal gang violence at early 80s LA/SoCal punk shows — constantly watching your back. A close call at Spanky's: the guy next to Bill got stabbed during a Guttermouth gig. Biggest missed show regret: skipped Oingo Boingo due to peer pressure from girls in line. Never saw Black Flag — their reputation for brutality genuinely scared him off. Eight years of mail order before opening the store; Voodoo Glow Skulls his biggest-selling record. Snow in the forecast, bass in the bloodstream. We kick things off with a little storm prep and then slide straight into three new releases that light up different corners of the pop universe: a girl band debut with real instruments and real restraint, a solo star leaning into neon funk, and a multinational rookie squad ringing the alarm with swagger.First, LATENCY's “It Was Love” trades flash for feel. Five members play and sing, shaping a soft, mid-tempo band sound that grows from quiet reflection to gentle resolve. Clean guitars, steady percussion, and a tasteful piano-synth color create space for melodies that stick without shouting. By the time the guitar solo lifts around the midpoint, the song has earned its momentum—intimate, bittersweet, and clear-eyed.Then Kento Nakajima flips the room with “XTC”. Think syncopated 80s synths, jazzy guitar licks, and a rhythm that snaps you into motion. Kenty's vocal control is the secret weapon, gliding from sultry lows to sharp falsetto as the track dances between playful invitation and seductive tension. It's a confident solo statement that blends disco shimmer with modern polish, perfect for late-night drives or living room dance breaks. Finally, meet ALPHA DRIVE ONE and their adrenaline-spiked “FREAK ALARM.” The intro hums like a clock before exploding into 80s hip-hop charge—reverb bass, crisp drums, and a chorus that stretches like a siren. The lyrics double as a manifesto: they're the “new alien,” inviting you to own your edge and step into the circle. It's a debut with grit and charm, made to wake up your playlist. If you want a soundtrack for the week—reflection, heat, and high-voltage confidence—this one's for you. Send us a textThe Back in Time Brothers: A Very 80s Christmas (Originally Heard on URL Radio)Join DJ Paulie and Lou as they turn up the volume and celebrate the greatest toys, movies, and original Christmas music from the tubular 1980s!The chaos begins with Busted! Stupid Criminals at Christmas time, featuring tales of holiday fails. Hear about the woman in a "very revealing elf costume" who pocketed bottles of limited edition Christmas ale at a Cincinnati brewery. We cover the man caught trying to steal upscale lingerie from a busy mall in Philadelphia, claiming he was "helping Santa to deliver the naughty list gifts". Plus, listen to the story of the man offering "relaxing Christmas mistletoe shoulder rubs" before tripping over a decorative reindeer mid-escape. And don't miss the Reno couple caught breaking into a rental cabin wearing nothing but Santa hats and slippers.Next, Todd Snyder's Rock Talk dives into "The Dark Secrets Behind Band-Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas?”. Discover how Bob Geldof essentially "guilddrafted" major stars—including George Michael, Sting, and Phil Collins—into recording the chaotic anthem in a single day in 1984. Find out which lyric Bono "hated" singing (but belted out anyway) and the internal struggles over how the tens of millions raised were actually delivered. The Countdown blasts 12 iconic, original 80s holiday tracks. Get ready for the punk rock snowstorm of The Ramones' "Merry Christmas (I Don't Want to Fight Tonight)" and the haunting storytelling of The Pogues' "Fairy Tale of New York". You'll also hear Queen's emotional rock ballad “Thank God It's Christmas” and the soulful sorrow of Prince's "Another Lonely Christmas". Plus, we drop tracks from XTC (recording secretly as The Three Wise Men) and Run DMC's hip-hop holiday classic "Christmas in Hollis".Finally, Lou and DJ Paulie debate the definitive 80s Christmas Movies, ranking everything from the chaos of Gremlins and Die Hard (Yes, it's a Christmas movie!) to the classics A Christmas Story and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. The brothers also dive into 80s toys: the good (the game-changing NES system), the bad (the injury-prone Pogo Ball), and the ugly (the riot-inducing Cabbage Patch Kids and the creepy, talking Teddy Ruxpin).Tune in for the wildest Christmas since "Bing Crosby tap danced with Danny f****** K."!Support the showThanks for listening.
