"Comedy writers learn early on that we have a high degree of anonymity," writes podcast guest Alan Zweibel in his memoir Laugh Lines: My Life Helping Funny People Be Funnier. "Our words are spoken publicly by others who often have famous faces. Or by unknown people on their way to having famous faces." As one of the founding writers on Saturday Night Live, Alan's words were given voice by a cast of virtual unknowns, all on their way to becoming famous faces, eventually earning worldwide acclaim as some of the most iconic comic performers of their generation. Over the course of his 50-year career, he has penned jokes for dozens of Borscht Belt comedians and written for some of SNL's most memorable characters (such as Gilda Radner's "Roseanne Rosannadanna," John Belushi's "Samurai," and Garrett Morris's "Chico Escuela"), and helped to craft SNL producer Lorne Michaels's now-legendary appeal to invite the Beatles to appear on the show for the standard artist fee of $3,000. Alan is the recipient of five Emmy Awards for his work in television, which in addition to SNL also includes "It's Garry Shandling's Show" (which he co-created and produced), "The Late Show with David Letterman," and "Curb Your Enthusiasm." He is the author of 11 books, including the 2006 Thurber Prize-winning novel The Other Shulman, and Bunny Bunny: Gilda Radner—A Sort of Romantic Comedy, and six off-Broadway plays. He also collaborated with Billy Crystal on the Tony Award-winning play "700 Sundays," and with Martin Short on his Broadway hit "Fame Becomes Me," and co-wrote the screenplays for the films "Dragnet," "North," "The Story of Us," and "Here Today." He joins us on the podcast to reflect on a singular career as one of our leading comedy writers and humorists—and a wickedly funny body of work that has earned him an honorary Ph.D. from the State University of New York, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Writers Guild of America, East. We lost a comedic icon on this date in 1989, when ovarian cancer took Gilda Radner from us far too early. Bob Sirott dug into his ‘Dumpster of Memories’ to grab an interview he did with the Second City alumnus in November of 1979 when Radner was in town to do a show at McCormick […]
Even in the face of unimaginable tragedy and grief, Martin Short has always kept his sense of humor. As a young man, he channels three devastating personal losses into becoming a performing dynamo. Instead of being defined by these tragedies, he's emboldened to go out and pursue his acting dreams in Toronto in the 70s. The Canadian city is a hotbed of future comedy icons like Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, and Gilda Radner. And Martin fits right in. It starts with a production of “Godspell,” and Martin never looks back. It takes him to stardom on TV, stage, and the big screen. And now, with “Only Murders in the Building,” a bromance with Steve Martin, and a rumored romance with Meryl Streep, this triple-threat Emmy winner is as hot as ever. And living proof that with grit, determination, and a killer sense of humor, you can survive anything. You can follow Brooke and Aricia on socials at @brookesiffrinn and @ariciaskidmorewilliamss. From Lucille Ball to Tina Fey, from Joan Rivers to Margaret Cho, women have been rewriting the rules of comedy for decades — and they're not done yet. Host Cynthia Bemis Abrams is joined by Lynn Harris, founder of Gold Comedy, to explore the legacy and future of funny women on TV. Together, they dissect the comedic influence of legends like Mary Tyler Moore, Moms Mabley, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus — and discuss why shows like SNL still present challenges for women today. With a nod to streaming, social media, and evolving industry gatekeepers, this episode dives into how women and non-binary creatives are shaping the next chapter of television comedy. Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast this Earth Day, we are talking to journalist Michael Simmons, son of National Lampoon co-founder & film producer Matt Simmons. We loved talking to Michael because there is so much history in the (almost) forgotten history of American humor magazine turned pop culture juggernaut, National Lampoon. Michael gives us behind the scenes stories about the fabled National Lampoon editorial offices in Manhattan circa 1974 which was a breeding ground for comedy and specifically Saturday Night Live writers and performers. We discuss National Lampoon stage shows with Chevy Chase, Harold Ramis, John Belushi & Gilda Radner that Michael was road manager when it hit the road. We hear about his dad's strange history as one of the founders the first credit card company, Diner's Club in the 1950s & how it led to National Lampoon. We even get into the history of how National Lampoon came into existence, birthed out of the Harvard Lampoon and even before that. Michael gives us a firsthand account of what it was like being in the offices of National Lampoon before and after films like National Lampoon's Animal House & National Lampoon's Vacation launched the brand mainstream. What's more we hear stories about Harold Ramis got nervous flyer Gilda Radner on a plane she didn't want to get on, Wilt Chamberlain giving him a ride on his shoulders and how he became an award winning journalist in Los Angeles writing about vice squad busts and later, music journalism. So sit back and take a listen to a fascinating story about how National Lampoon begat everything from Second City and This is Spinal Tap to SCTV and The Credibility Gap. It's all here on the Rarified Heir Podcast. Take a listen.
Hello to you listening in Mumbai, India!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga.Walking the Camino de Santiago was miles and more miles. 500 of them. No matter how many I had walked, there were still more to walk. Uphill, across hot, dry plains, and then the rains in the mountains that turned everything to muck and ankle-twisting rubble. I kept hearing “Just goes to show you, it's always something! If it ain't one thing it's another!” a mantra about life from Gilda Radner's father, for her SNL character Roseanne Roseannadanna. The voice in my head asked: “Well, Diane, what did you expect? You're walking a pilgrimage. Beyond the miles are more miles.”A TIP: I had to learn that the way out is through. Stop thinking that you will enjoy a trouble-free pilgrimage. Dive into the audacity of what you've chosen to do! Let go of trying to get free of the aches and pains, complications, limitations, and disappointments. They are part and parcel of what you said you wanted: to be a pilgrim. These problems are the pilgrimage. Now what? How will you solve them? Don't just start over. Keep starting over. And then look back on what you achieved. Question: What do you do when faced with “It's always something”?Be well, do good work and keep in touch! On April 19, 1980, legendary character actor Strother Martin hosted Saturday Night Live—and delivered a surprisingly strong performance. Best known for his unforgettable roles in films like Cool Hand Luke, True Grit, Slap Shot, The Wild Bunch, Up in Smoke, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Martin brought his unique presence and versatility to Studio 8H for one memorable night. Nick looks back at this fascinating episode, featuring a clever Cool Hand Luke parody and a mix of strange, sharp, and hilarious sketches. Along the way, he shares behind-the-scenes stories about how some of the show's most unusual comedy came together. You'll hear standout moments from cast members Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, Harry Shearer, Garrett Morris, Paul Shaffer, and more—plus material that feels just as politically relevant today as it did in 1980. It's a fun, deep dive into a night when one of Hollywood's most underrated talents—often mistaken for Tennessee Williams—stepped into the world of live sketch comedy and left his mark. [Ep 119]

Picture this. It was my first job in radio. I decided to do a series about women and comedy. The idea coincided with the birth of Saturday Night Live. The first interview: Gilda Radner. We sat on the floor, right across from Studio 8H where the show is still performed. Gilda told me all about what life is like when you become an overnight star. Then I talked to Jane Curtin about people asking her for autographs when she walked her dog. Somehow, in those years I missed talking to Laraine Newman. But I finally just caught up with her. And she's the star of this episode. It's an outrageous conversation about SNL and all the things that have happened to her since. Plus, you'll hear what Gilda and Jane had to say from those early day sit-downs. “Now What?” is produced with help from Steve Zimmer, Lucy Little and Jackie Schwartz. Audio production is by Nick Ciavatta.
For Saturday Night Live's 50th anniversary, we're featuring interviews with some of the early cast members/writers. Nick welcomes fellow film critic Peter Sobczynski to the podcast for a deep dive into his Saturday Night Live memories, from his childhood introduction to the show to his favorite cast members and standout moments. They also count down Peter's five favorite SNL sketches of all time—many of which share a horror-inspired, darkly comedic streak. Highlights include Dan Aykroyd's hilariously gruesome Julia Child, Gilda Radner as a terrified child facing a closet-dwelling fiend, and Bill Hader's Vincent Price struggling to wrangle Jon Hamm's James Mason and Fred Armisen's Liberace. Peter also reveals his favorite SNL line of all time and reflects on how his freshman year of high school coincided with one of the show's strangest seasons. Saturday Night Live has been a staple for all of us. This year, the late-night institution is celebrating its 50th season, so we thought, why not honor SNL with a review of Jason Reitman's amazing comedy film SATURDAY NIGHT? The original cast of Gilda Radner, Laraine Newman, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, and John Belushi are played by near-no-name actors Ella Hunt, Emily Fairn, Kim Matula, Lamorne Morris, Dylan O'Brien, Cory Michael Smith, and Matt Wood, respectively. SATURDAY NIGHT received the top honor for Best Ensemble Cast by the Music City Film Critics' Association awards, and it's easy to see why.

Michigan Rock Vocal/bassist/songwriter legend Al Jacquez is no stranger to the music business. Straddling the comforts of positivity post-Savage Grace (which formed out of The Scarlet Letter), Jacquez looks back in fondness and care at the legend that Warner Brothers once held high on its record label. Jacquez maintained the rougher elements of the final years of the band and the reunion album that was released nearly 20 years ago helped cement credibility, friendships, and the magic that the group once had. They released Savage Grace I, II and in 2006 a reunion album (III) called One Night In America. Still at the top of the vocal game, Jacquez performed as a member of the Dick Wagner Band during Wagner's final touring years and has continued to sing the songs he was known for from the late '60s and early '70s, amongst many others. Always surrounded with great guitar partners, Jacquez still touts Savage Grace partner Ron Koss as a favorite, as well as Silver Bullet Band's Drew Abbott, whom he plays with on occasion. Jacquez was inducted with Savage Grace into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame in 2021 and performed in Bay City the day after taping this historical podcast at the MMHP Dunlop Songwriters Stage. Al offers up live songs, the move back to Michigan, backstory on the reunion album, the abundance of his faith, the loss of Ron Koss and why his voice continues to be his most important tool--all here in Part 2 of 2. How do you tell a 90-minute mess in just 90 minutes? Jason Reitman's Saturday Night tells the tale of SNL's infamous debut tape night, when it was still a giant question mark in the programming lineup, only to be a game-time decision by executive David Tebet. The evening was filled with mythology, inhabited by personalities that are just as mythological — Gilda Radner, John Belushi, Jim Henson, and Andy Kaufman, just to name a few (these four in particular are treated with a welcomed level of reverence in this film over most of the others being depicted).

Tread Perilously's witchy October continues with the 1978 TV special Witch's Night Out. While the adults in town begin to plan a thoroughly grown-up Halloween party, all youngsters Small and Tender want to do is scare them with their Halloween masks. But when everyone recognizes them during trick-or-treating, they run home dejected. Their cries to become real monsters are heard by the local witch, who happens to live in the abandoned mansion the adults are using as the site of their gathering. Will the town learn the true meaning of Halloween when Small, Tender, and their babysitter, Bazooey, are transformed by the witch's magicks? The drug comparisons are constant with both Erik and Justin deciding Bazooey knows where to get the good stuff. Erik points out the special's origins in Canada. The quality of 1970s animation is also discussed. Small and Tender join the ranks of the Little Shits while Justin finds their names unacceptable. The pair once again threaten to do a Voula episode of Degrassi Junior High. Gilda Radner easily wins voice cast MVP status, although Catherine O'Hara proves a surprising addition to the ensemble. Erik theorizes a Dan Aykroyd cameo as well. Justin almost convinces Erik to watch Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice and Mayor Goodly turns out to be a surprise bad guy.

That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
In the 50 years that *Saturday Night Live* has been on the air, there have been plenty of controversial sketches and moments. Some were so outrageous that public apologies had to be issued—sometimes unsuccessfully. In this episode, Nick revisits four of the most controversial sketches that were either misguided, misinterpreted, or just plain offensive. Hosts like Christoph Waltz, Bea Arthur, and Joshua Jackson, along with cast members such as Jimmy Fallon, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, Chevy Chase, Rachel Dratch, and others, participated in these regretful scenes. The episode includes a look at Fallon's infamous blackface sketch, the bloody parody of a Jesus film, a sketch that mocked a real-life accidental shooting, and a TV movie parody in which the struggles of a mastectomy are told from the suffering husband's perspective. Are these sketches funny or offensive? You be the judge—but they certainly sparked a lot of controversy! [Ep91]
