Music needs boundaries to be great! Steven talked about starting in Seattle studios, moving his studio, being organized, limiting io inputs, becoming a backup badass, headphone mixers, reamping drums, modular synths, & when to buy your own building. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Steven Lee Tracy, a writer, musician, producer, mixer and owner of Saint Cecilia Studios in Tucson, Arizona. Steven works with a variety of artists from electronic pop with big modern vocals to indie rock bands to Americana acoustic music. So I look forward to learning more about the ways he can interact with different artists to bring out their best work. This episode is particularly interesting to me because Saint Cecilia is also the patron saint of music. And Cecilia is the name that I gave to my one of a kind, famous MCI console, originally from Criteria Studio C in Miami, that I had here in my studio, The Toy Box Studio, for 15 years. This is the console that recorded hotel California for the Eagles, the Bee Gees staying alive and Saturday night fever, Margaritaville, We're An American Band, and the Grease soundtrack to name just a few. A doctoral research project on contemporary Swedish wind music has led to an article in the WASBE journal and brought about the North American premieres of several works by Swedish composers Rolf Martinsson, Max Käck and Ingvar Karkoff. Currently he is researching 19th century music of both Newport, Rhode Island and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Dr. Stickney has arranged several works for band, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments based on this research, leading to performances at the Newport (RI) 4th of July celebration and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. His articles have appeared in music education journals throughout the United States. Dr. Stickney regularly presents at music education conferences throughout the country on topics including music education, conducting, and rehearsal strategy. He has presented at the Iowa Music Education Association Conference, the New York Summer Band Directors Association Conference, the NJMEA State Conference, the Massachusetts Musie Educators Association Conference and more. For 28 seasons, Dr. Stickney worked for the Newport Music Festival in Rhode Island. For the last 16 of those seasons he served as the Production Manager, overseeing all aspects of staging, lighting, sound and recording. Dr. Stickney received his DMA in Wind Conducting from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, where he studied with Dr. William Berz. He received his MA in Tuba Performance from Montclair State University (NJ), and his BA from Gettysburg College. https://www.historicmusicofnewport.org/ https://www.youtube.com/@mastick1773/videos https://www.newportri.com/story/entertainment/music/2022/01/18/gilded-age-newport-ri-mark-stickney-re-creates-music-from-1800-s/9147683002/ DOGFIGHT Internet Rabbit Hole of the Week: Kyoto Takahashi (Japan) Senior High School Band A few videos to give you the basic idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dAsi2jItq0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKRx8RSmVxQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jigHuKIqgyA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-V0VPyBkB0Y https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=2059781387584379 Documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRCmq3n5DDw Green Band Association: http://www.green-band.org/English4.html CODA Topic: Advocacy, y'all. Growing up in the Northwest, the Young Fresh Fellows were our Replacements. Our Big Star. Our "fill in the blank for the band that never got the due they deserved." They were an American Band that just played some good time rock 'n roll. And, Scott McCaughey was the driving force for the band. He's done alright for himself along the way...being a part of R.E.M. for years, The Minus 5, The Baseball Project. Scott is a legend. So, when I had a chance to be self indulgent in discussing both baseball (based on the Baseball Project's latest record) AND "The Men Who Loved Music" with Scott....well...I think you can probably tell that I was super pumped to have the opportunity. We dig through the stories behind the songs on the album...and relive a little of that time period in the '80s (shout outs to PLU, Amy Grant, The Fastbacks, Dave Niehaus and more). Even if you're not familiar with Scott or this band, I think you'll enjoy the conversation. EPISODE #993 MARK FARNER AND THE HISTORY OF GRAND FUNK RAILROAD GUEST: Mark Farner is one of the founding members, lead singer, lead guitarist, and writer of over 90% of the Grand Funk Railroad music catalog. Farner has always been known as the energetic driving force on stage, the engine that pulled the original Grand Funk Railroad to the top of the charts. His soulful voice and power rock riffs fueled the Funk along with his atomic stage presence. His story and his imprint on music starts with Flint, Mich., and since 1969 from his humble beginnings and a blue-collar outlook, Farner has captained a global crusade for love, peace and freedom and became a rock ‘n' roll icon. More than 50 years later he commands the stage with the same intensity performing epic hits that defined a generation: “I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)”, “Bad Time”, “Some Kind of Wonderful”, “Foot Stompin' Music”, “Heartbreaker”, “Locomotion”, “Mean Mistreater” and “We're An American Band”. Farner has amplified his remarkable career by decibels selling more than 30 million records worldwide, including 16 gold and platinum albums. Farner is launching a long-awaited instructional video series. Farner Chords, a new video series where Farner gives a detailed look at the chords and techniques behind the hits, kicks off today with “People, Let's Stop The War”. The single first appeared in the 1971 Grand Funk Railroad album, “E Pluribus Funk”. The video series is free and can only be accessed online at MarkFarner.com.
