“They say life begins at 40,” composer W.C. Handy once said, “but I wouldn't know.” Handy was 40 in 1914 when he wrote “St. Louis Blues,” and, he noted, “ever since, my life has revolved around that composition.”Well, if you're going to have a single song dominate your life, you could do much worse than have it be “St. Louis Blues.” Sometimes called “the jazzman's ‘Hamlet,'” this composition is one of the most enduring and recognizable pieces in all of American music.Classic versions of “St. Louis Blues” have been recorded by some of the world's greatest performers, from Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong to Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock, from Fats Waller and Benny Goodman to Dizzy Gillespie and Dave Brubeck.Origin StoryAs a 19 year old, Handy arrived in St. Louis, Missouri, penniless and slept on the cobblestones of the levee until he finally found work as a musician.Legend has it that his “St. Louis Blues” was inspired by his chance meeting with a woman who walked the city streets tormented by her husband's absence, wailing “my man's got a heart like a rock cast in the sea.” Handy's work was to memorialize that summer night, right from his opening line: I hate to see the evening sun go down.Handy, says jazz historian Tom Morgan, “drew inspiration for many of his songs from African-American words and music, so it is not surprising that he began to compose the theme to this woman's anguish.”His song touched people all around the world. In France, for instance, guitarist Django Reinhardt played and recorded the tune many times throughout the 1930s. (When Nazi Germany occupied France, American songs became frowned upon, if not banned outright. In order to play them, Reinhardt had to give them French names: “St. Louis Blues” became “La Tristesse du saint Louis.”)Films Two films — one in 1929 and one in 1958 — have made the song their title. The first — a 16-minute two-reeler — presents the only footage we have of the foundational, legendary and essential blues singer Bessie Smith performing. Directed by Dudley Murphy, the film is unique for its all-Black cast, presented in a relatively unprejudiced light for that time period. Its soundtrack featured Smith and her band made up of seminal early jazzmen, including pianist James P. Johnson, cornetists Thomas Morris and Joe Smith and guitarist Bernard Addison, along with the renowned choir led by Francis Hall Johnson. Thirty years later, the 1958 film was a full-length biopic of the composer. In it, Handy was portrayed by popular jazz vocalist Nat “King” Cole. Sharing the screen with him were Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald, Eartha Kitt, gospel icon Mahalia Jackson (and an 11-year-old Billy Preston, who would rock a later generation with tunes like “Nothing from Nothing” and “You Are So Beautiful”).By the time of Handy's death that same year, the songwriter was earning royalties upwards of $25,000 a year on that single composition. Our Take on the TuneThe Flood has been doing versions of this song for decades. In fact, in 2008 it was the first song featured in The Flood's inaugural episode of its weekly podcast. Now this 2024 rendition — episode #710 in that same podcast — comes from the first song of the evening at a Flood rehearsal a few weeks ago. Riding on the infectious rhythm laid down by Randy Hamilton and Jack Nuckols and framing the solos by Danny Cox and Sam St. Clair, the number heralded a particularly fun night at the Bowen house.Video ExtraFor many years, The Flood played “St. Louis Blues” as an instrumental, but it took on a whole new life when Michelle Hoge later claimed it for her own, as she did on New Year's Eve at our big “Flood at 50” birthday bash at Alchemy Theatre. Here's the video of that wonderful moment, shot by our manager Pamela Bowen: This is a public episode. It wasn't until later in his life that he met the love of his life, Pam, who helped him put his personal life back on track before his death in 2014. Cocker's life was one of attaining goals, making disastrous mistakes, and ultimately finding happiness and redemption in the eleventh hour. Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

I was very young when I peered through a hospital nursery window and saw a newborn for the first time. In my ignorance, I was dismayed to see a tiny, wrinkly child with a hairless, cone-shaped head. The baby’s mother standing near us, however, couldn’t stop asking everyone, “Isn’t he gorgeous?” I was reminded of that moment when I saw a video of a young dad tenderly singing the song, “You Are So Beautiful” to his baby girl. To her enraptured daddy—the little girl was the most beautiful thing ever created. Is that how God looks at us? Ephesians 2:10 says that we’re His “handiwork”—His masterpiece. Aware of our own failings, it may be hard for us to accept how much He loves us or to believe that we could ever be of value to Him. But God doesn’t love us because we deserve love (vv. 3-4); He loves us because He is love (1 John 4:8). His love is one of grace and He showed the depth of it when, through Jesus’ sacrifice, He made us alive in Him when we were dead in our sins (Ephesians 2:5, 8). God’s love isn’t fickle—it’s constant. He loves the imperfect, the broken, those who are weak and those who mess up. When we fall, He’s there to lift us up. We’re His treasure, and we’re so beautiful to Him.

Hacking The Afterlife podcast

It's our Anniversary Special! Jennifer reached out to me 7 years ago, after listening to the audible for my second book "It's a Wonderful Afterlife." At the time I didn't know anything about mediums, other than I'd met a few who were spot on and amazingly accurate. I didn't realize that it was another methodology for accessing information on the flipside. So we spent three hours together our first meeting - me filming her accessing people on the flipside. Me asking her questions about her path and journey - all on film.  She knew more about a person on the flipside (Amelia Earhart) than anyone I'd ever met - and I'd worked on two feature films about her.  Not because Jennifer knew about Amelia - but because it was like having Amelia in the room answering my pointed questions. After that we began meeting weekly for seven years.  Let me say that again - for some reason, for seven years, she and I have been conversing with the flipside for seven years.  Excerpts of those conversations are in the film "HACKING THE AFTERLIFE" full transcripts are in the book "Hacking the Afterlife", "Backstage Pass to the Flipside 1, 2, 3" - as the latest book "Tuning Into the Afterlife." That is all a prelude to what happens next. A day before, a friend of mine posted a photograph of Billy Preston referring to the trauma he'd experienced as a child. I wrote under his post, "Not gone, just not here."  It's hard to say to people that our loved ones are "not gone" - but to raise awareness that they are somewhere else. Which made me think, "I would like to interview him on the flipside."  Lo and behold, the next day, doing this podcast, Jennifer says "I'm seeing Nat King Cole."  We had interviewed him before (I spent a semester at his high school when I was in high school in Chicago) so that wasn't odd to hear.  However, she said "He's singing that song "You are so beautiful." Most people don't know that Billy Preston wrote that song. (with Bruce Fisher, not Diane Warren as I say in the clip). But because she mentioned it - I realized that Luana had put an image of Nat in Jennifer's mind to get me into the ballpark, and by having her hear "You Are So Beautiful" was to allow me to connect those dots. And it happens live on camera. But Jennifer doesn't know who "Billy" is and I don't say his last name until the end of the podcast. That allowed me to ask her specific questions about Billy and his journey. I knew that Eric Clapton was a close friend, so when I asked her to ask him about his friend Eric's visit to his deathbed, she said "I'm seeing Eric Clapton." I didn't say his name. She did. Because we've interviewed John and George before - as Jennifer notes in the podcast she did a session with one of George's friends who was able to access him - (Gary) - and we've chatted with John a few times (anyone can) - I asked for Billy's impression of John and George. Again - she hasn't seen the film "Get Back" she isn't aware of the relationship between the three of them. So what we get to hear is unadulterated reactions to my questions from someone no longer on the planet. Everything is interpretation - everything is frequency. So some of the answers may be skewed by interpretation, some may be skewed by my asking them inappropriately. For example, I didn't know that Billy had a sister - so when Jennifer says "the love of his life was the husband of his sister" - that may mean "a boyfriend his sister had at a young age" it could mean someone closely associated with his sister.   And his sister is alive - so if she's reading this, my apologies for asking a question that I didn't know what he would reply - and we tend to not edit or change what comes through. It's an impression that Jennifer got, that the "love of his life" was his first love, which was someone associated with his sister.  Whether they were together or not isn't important. The portion about the abuse - looking up the details after the sessions, I learn that it was by someone in a church band - not someone in the church per se, but someone who molested and abused him as a child. (When he was forced to move to a new city and be part of this band in Los Angeles.) Jennifer asks if he was an orphan - and the answer was that he "had the feeling of being an orphan" when he was moved abruptly to the new city. Having been doing this for so long with Jennifer, when it seems as if I'm "leading her" it IS THAT I'M LEADING HER. I've been doing this for so long with her, I'm anticipating what she might say, and as you can hear, I interrupt her to focus on questions I can verify. (Like "did he play drums?" - he did play other instruments, the drums reference might have been about Ringo, but I focused on things I can verify about Billy's life.) Needless to say - anyone who has seen Get Back will see what I'm talking about when his presence in the band is treated with reverence. I saw it, but Jennifer did not.  And the answers are mind bending if not mind blowing in scope.   So this is an appropriate Anniversary Special.  It shows what seven years of constant conversation with the flipside can do.  Allow people to open themselves up to the possibility that people live on. Again - because we live in a world of celebrity, I'm not posting this to connect myself or Jennifer with famous musicians or people. We are doing this specifically to show, demonstrate to everyone that it is possible to connect with loved ones, it is possible that they still exist, it is possible to converse.  All of this work - the seven years of it - has been to open up that door for people.   Because it's time. It's time to realize that life goes on. That consciousness goes on. That are loved ones still care about us, still want to assist or help us, and we are the ones who either prevent them from doing so - or can open the door for them.  So open the door by opening one's heart.  "That's the Way God Planned it" "Will It Go Round In Circles" "Nothing From Nothing" "A Change is Gonna Come" "Love the One You're With" (based on a comment Stephen Stills heard from Billy) "You Are So Beautiful" - all these titles are about the beautiful journey Billy took and that we all take.

Jesse Kramer's story is as authentic as it is unpredictable. It's a story of struggle, adversity and rebirth. A story still in its preface as the young 24 year old singer and songwriter from Indianapolis, who now resides in Nashville, seeks to kick-start the official rebirth of rock n' roll for the modern world.“Rock n' roll is NOT dead! It thrives on lives with struggle, passion and soul,” Jesse emphatically claims. “It takes guts, focus, and drive. I hope to become the modern world's reminder that rock n' roll still exists, and is an avenue which people can channel emotions and thoughts through music, just as I do.”From a very early age in life, Jesse Kramer always knew that music and singing were his only genuine means of communicating his personal thoughts and feelings on life. His old soul from within began guiding his thoughts and decisions in high school at the age of 14. That's when he first began writing and recording his own music after growing up listening to a wide range of artists like Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marilyn Manson, Chris Cornell and even Eminem. Jesse quickly developed his own distinctive and gritty sound by balancing elements of rock n' roll, soul, and R&B music. Something he now simply refers to as “The Jesse Kramer Sound.”At the age of 17, after growing up in a strict religious household where everything about the way he should live his life was prescribed, Jesse was given an ultimatum by his parents: Choose whether to continue playing music and be kicked out of the house, or put the guitar and mic down for good, and pursue a life as dictated by religion. He chose to carry on with music, and faced a period of homelessness by couch-surfing and sleeping in his car, even while still in high school, but in the name of pursuing his dreams of bringing rock n' roll back.“As I grew older I became more awoke, as music broadened my ability to see real truth and understanding,” Jesse explained. “More than just what religion was teaching me growing up. Music is universal and is able to be seen, created, and felt. Just as some say how God is like the wind.”In 2014 after he turned 18, Jesse decided to move from Indianapolis to Nashville to get serious about pursuing his ambitions as a songwriter. Thus, once again redirecting his life's trajectory much to his family's apprehension, he picked up and moved on.“Nashville has been what I consider my College, as I had chosen to leave my full-ride to traditional College in Indianapolis, due to life circumstances,” Jesse articulated. “Nashville has definitely taught me a lot about the life of a musician. It's definitely a cool town to get your feet wet in, but I don't believe this is somewhere I will be forever. It has definitely given me the education I needed, so I can apply it to the way I like to do things.”In 2018 his determination and hard work began to pay off when he was discovered and personally invited by the Executive Producers of FOX-TV Networks to perform on season 2 of their music competition series The Four: Battle for Stardom. During his auditions, Jesse gave rousing and soulful performances of Jeff Buckley's “Hallelujah,” Jimi Hendrix's “All Along The WatchTower,” Joe Cocker's “You Are So Beautiful,” and others, impressing both the studio audience and the show's executive judge panel consisting of Sean Combs, DJ Khaled, Meghan Trainor and Fergie. In 2019 Jesse released his first five song EP called Breakthrough of original music he wrote, recorded and self-produced. Later that year - just before the worldwide COVID-pandemic would shut down much of the TV & Music industry - Jesse was invited to audition and perform on season 15 of NBC's popular TV show America's Got Talent, which began airing in 2020. Covering Lady Gaga's pop hit song “Bad Romance” Jesse's vibration and intensity once again brought the studio audience to their feet, this time receiving a standing ovation. Even legendary music industry executive Simon Cowell blessed Jesse not only with his respect, but with his undivided attention, noting he “Really, really, really enjoyed your performance. You have my respect for coming onto this show.”In 2020 Jesse released his second EP of original music; Quarantunes (part 1/2) written in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Once again the songs illustrate his musical depth, as he dives into his more than 200+ catalog of original songs. Now at 24, the ambitious and up-and-coming Rockstar in the making is staying busy with touring, recording new music, and building upon his blossoming songwriting career, while his fan base continues growing rapidly. This Fall Jesse will release new music, and music lovers will once again hear how Jesse transcends a sound that is not only reminiscent of years past, but new, fresh, and authentic for the modern world. A sound that is fastly becoming regarded as a genuinely one-of-a-kind, giving him the ability to bring a wide range of music lovers together.“I think the best way to really understand the world is through music. I would like people to feel and vibe with me, and to let them know there is still authentic, raw and genuine music out there. Simply put, I want my music to really touch people... and I am ready to do whatever it takes and go anywhere I must to make that happen.”

You know, when you think about it, “Love” is a four-letter word that comes in different shapes, sizes and flavors — like what you find in a box of chocolates. (Forest Gump knows what we mean). And we express our love in the words we speak to close a phone call, in the heart-shaped emojis our fingers quickly type to BFFs and in the thousands of love songs that have been written and sung for the ones that live in our hearts. In this episode, Vocal Majority offers you this heart-filled box of chocolates while we will escort you down “lover’s lane” with a few stories about some of these love songs….and then we’ll sing them for you, along with a few special guests. Our first piece of chocolate is a VM classic from ‘96… “If I Give My Heart To You”, followed by an a cappella bonbon… ”What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life”…sung by two giants in the Barbershop world…. Jeff Oxley and Greg Clancy. Then with a nod to the sugar-sweet 60’s pop group The Turtles, The Nylons suggest “Imagine me and you, I do” with their caramel-treat “Happy Together”.Our next selection will be from longtime VM friend, Don Shelton and his vocal group… Singers Unlimited, with their delicious version of “My Romance”. The last two pieces of chocolate in the box will be two VM recordings…. “You Are So Beautiful” (with strings) and “No Arms Can Ever Hold You”.We hope the songs and stories we’ve shared on this episode show you how much we love “Love”. The VM wish you and all your loved ones a wonderful Valentine’s Day. And we hope it’s full of flowers, love songs….and chocolate!“All you need is love. Jaidyn started singing at a very early age. At two years old, her grandmother donated over 14 inches of hair to St. Baldricks. Once she was finished, Jaidyn grabbed her grandmother's face and sang, "You Are So Beautiful." Being so young, Jaidyn sang a slightly different version of the Joe Cockers hit song that she learned from the movie "The Little Rascals." Nonetheless, she sang every word from her heart and continues to do so. Jaidyn was raised in church and was asking to do music early on. Between the age of nine and ten, she was leading the music for VBS and singing at various locations. When Jaidyn turned 12, she began playing her mother's guitar and within the following year the Cowboy Church youth leader gave Jaidyn her very first guitar on her 13th birthday. In September of 2017, she was invited to play at numerous places which include Mid-South Southern Gospel Convention in Malden, MO. And in 2018, Jaidyn began full-time ministry which involved her traveling across the country. Being apart of the Country Gospel Music Association, Jaidyn participated in the Pigeon Forge Eastern Tennessee division and was blessed with the Acapella Artist of the Year, Teenage Artist of the Year, and Singing Interpreter of the Year. Jaidyn has also been an active member of the Fine Arts program and has qualified for nationals five years running for various vocal categories.
