Feeling cozy, comfortable, and... thirsty?? Perfect. Drink up this delicious cup of Emily Wilson TEA. This episode is about... going into the ground, coke, moldy olives, robbing customers, alcoholic mornings, a big ol' grimace, being 25(!!!), mug kink, and Leo getting chipotle. Emily is a comedian, actress and writer based in New York City. She was in the 2021 New York Comedy Festival, the 2022 Netflix is a Joke Festival and also hosts Tuesdays at the Red Room, a weekly comedy show at KGB in the East Village. She is currently running a one woman show called FIXED about her time as a finalist on The X Factor when she was 15 years old. She wrote it with her friend and collaborator Sam Blumenfeld, and they'll be taking FIXED to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for a full run in August. But come see it before that, in the US!
Author, actor, and raconteur Robin Hirsch ran the Cornelia Street Cafe in New York's Greenwich Village for 41 years until he was forced to close it in 2019 due to rising rent. The restaurant was renowned for its basement nightclub where singer/songwriters, jazz bands, poets and comics played on a tiny stage. Shows were short so that different groups perform each night. Robin who's a writer and actor, has performed several shows about his life and the prejudice he felt being a German Jew in post war London. In New York he found endless outlets for creative expression. He established a stable of talent at his café where people incubated new work and the famous rubbed shoulders with the aspiring. Career advice? Robin says he's always stumbled into opportunities and grasped them but nothing was planned. He's an introvert who has had to learn to be an unflappable MC, host and artistic director. He says his British education has helped him make it all seem effortless when in fact he's always been shy. They say you can take the girl out of Brooklyn, but you can't take Brooklyn out of the girl. Let's Do Lunch! guest Susan Collins is testament to that with her one-woman show You Can Take The Girl Outta of Brooklyn (But You Can't Take Brooklyn Outta The Girl), chronicling her East Flatbush upbringing and adventures in the music business through words and music. Susan joins host Robin Milling over lunch at Cornelia Street Cafe, just blocks away from where she got her start, Cafe Wha! in Greenwich Village. She would hitchhike to the club from Brooklyn for open mics, meeting the one and only Jimi Hendrix, who was so taken with the teenaged Collins he asked her sing with his band, Jimmy James & The Blue Flames. Amongst her many claims to fame, Susan penned A Letter To Patty about Patty Hearst for the new show Saturday Night Live, where she became the voice behind Gilda Radner singing Jewess Jeans which is now part of the Jewish Museum. She sang vocals with Todd Rundgren on Hello It's Me, and Odyssey's Native New Yorker. The late Ellie Greenwich is her dearest friend, who co-wrote the theme song for her show. A great storyteller who doesn't hold back which is the Brooklyn in her; telling Robin why she chose not to duet with Bruce Springsteen for starters.
