This summer, The Jewish Museum is examining the life and work of a local artist who dared to be different. Ben Shahn was born in present day Lithuania in 1898, but immigrated to Brooklyn as a boy after his father was exiled to Siberia. Shahn began a life of using his art to respond to historical moments with social realism, from the Great Depression to the Vietnam War. Dr. Laura Katzman, professor of art history at James Madison University, and Dr. Stephen Brown, curator at the Jewish Museum discuss, "Ben Shahn, On Nonconformity," on view through October 12.

Few words carry such heavy connotations and are at the same time so prone to misunderstanding, as the word antisemitism. What do we talk about when we talk about antisemitism? British historian and author Mark Mazower discusses how the meaning of antisemitism has changed over time. In his latest book On Antisemitism: A Word in History, Mark Mazower traces the long history of antisemitism from its ancient origins to its many transformations in the modern world. The term was coined in the nineteenth century by Europeans who saw assimilating Jews as a threat to their ethnic-nationalist ideals. They combined age-old prejudices with racist pseudoscience, laying the groundwork for the horrors of Nazism and the Holocaust.Nowadays, the Israel-Palestine conflict has re-ignited debates in both Israel, European countries and the United States. The fight against extremists became intertwined with the question: when is criticism of Israel antisemitic? In De Balie, we dissect a loaded term.Mark Mazower (1958) is a professor of history at Columbia University in New York, specialised in modern Greece, 20th century Europe and international history. He is the author of award-winning best-sellers such as Dark Continent: Europe's 20th Century (1998), The Balkans (2000), and Hitler's Empire: Nazi Rule in Occupied Europe (2008). He also writes regularly for the Financial Times, The New York Times, and the New York Review of Books, among others.Nadia Bouras (1981) is associate professor and researcher at the Institute of History at Leiden University. She is also affiliated with the Netherlands Institute in Morocco (NIMAR), the center of expertise in Morocco studies at Leiden University. Bouras regularly appears as an expert in the media on current affairs in the field of integration and migration. Schrijver is also professor by special appointment of Jewish Book History at the University of Amsterdam's (UvA) Faculty of Humanities. THE INTIFADA HAS BEEN GLOBALIZED IN BOULDER And not just Boulder. Let's not forget that in a very short period of time an anti-Semite tried to burn down the Governor of Pennsylvania's mansion with him and his family in it, two people were murdered outside a Jewish Museum in DC, and now we have a man throwing flammable devices, likely Molotov cocktails, at a group of mostly elderly people walking down the Pearl Street Mall to remind people that there are still hostages in Gaza. Eight people have been injured, one of them quite badly, and they ranged in age from 52 to 88. The man who did it was shouting about Palestine and his name is Mohamed Sabry Soliman.

052925 DC Jewish Museum Reopens, Trumps TACO Trades, NYPD Criminalizes Delivery Riders by The News with Paul DeRienzo

Last week, two Israeli Embassy staff were shot and killed after leaving an event at the Capital Jewish Museum in DC, Washington. Once arrested, the shooter reportedly said “I did it for Palestine, I did it for Gaza.” The murders have raised questions about how far-reaching antisemitism is in the USA. Was this, for example, an act against Israel's war or an attack on innocent Jewish people living and working in America? And does White House messaging have a part to play in this tragedy? Rohan Venkat and Emily Tamkin discuss. Two Israeli Embassy employees were shot and killed Wednesday night as they left the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C. The suspect in the killing, identified as 30-year-old Elias Rodriguez of Chicago, was initially "observed pacing back and forth outside of the museum" before he approached a group of four people, "produced a handgun," and shot the two victims. As he was handcuffed, Rodriguez repeatedly shouted "Free Palestine.” The shooting was being investigated as a hate crime, a law enforcement source said. Jimmy and Americans' Comedian Kurt Metzger discuss the details of the case that don't exactly add up, and Israel's history of staging false flag operations to achieve geopolitcal objectives. Plus segments on Piers Morgan's recent turn against Israel, Trump's “Big, Beautiful Bill” passing the House and evidence that the Biden administration covered up serious side effects from the mRNA vaccines. Also featuring Stef Zamorano, Kim Bright and Mary Holland. And a phone call from JD Vance!

Tracy Richmond, Chair of the Board for The Jewish Federation of New Hampshire, talks to NHJournal's Michael Graham about life in the Granite State as a Jewish American as antisemitic violence claims two more lives on the streets of Washington, D.C. That violence was accompanied by the "Free, Free Palestine" chant heard at UNH and the state capitol in Concord. Then Graham launches into a rant about the World's Worst Political Cover Up -- the fact that Joe Biden was mentally unfit to be President of the United States pretty much the entire time he was President of the United States. And nobody did more to keep Biden there than the Democrats of New Hampshire.Sponsored by Perfect Smiles of Nashua. Please support NHJournal's independent journalism by "subscribing" for $4.99/month.
In this episode of the C4 and Brian Neiman Podcast, we dive deep into the unsettling events surrounding the tragic shooting at the Jewish Museum. Joined by notable guests, including the Deputy Commissioner of the Baltimore City Police, we explore the details of this horrific crime and examine how seemingly ordinary individuals can become radicalized within their communities. In a time where peaceful protests can ignite into violence, it's crucial to address the root causes of radical acts and what they mean for our society.
Our show opens with the Big, Beautiful Bill passing out of the House by one vote. We do spend time discussing why some things could not be in this bill, because the only way to get it through the Senate is via the reconciliation process. It's not the right way to do any of this, but the Trump administration has to play within the framework of how Congress is currently behaving. Plus, all the talk about cuts are from Democrats who continue to say the opposite of anything Trump is doing in their bid to always be America last. After the meeting with the president of South Africa, it seems all of those “journalists” out there ran with the same headline, almost as if they were all on the same team. Go figure! We then examine a few news stories, which remind us that the violence, rage and vitriol are almost always contained on the Left. We cover the bombing of a fertility clinic, followed by the cold-blooded murder of two people leaving a Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., their killer screaming to “Free. Free. Free Palestine.” The Left fomented a call for a global intifada, now they have it. The Auto-Pen scandal continues to grow, thanks to a senior Biden official turning whistleblower to Attorney Ed Martin in the DOJ. Assistant AG Harmeet Dhillon was on Tucker Carlson's show and shared stories of emotionally unhinged lawyers who had to quit to Civil Rights division of the DOJ. Finally, Politico says Democrats are worried about fund-raising and in-fighting heading into the 2026 mid-terms. Among his greatest achievements was the mural The Meaning of Social Security, painted between 1940 and 1942 in Washington D.C. to reflect the benefits of the then-recent Social Security Act. Shahn is the subject of a major show that opened this week at the Jewish Museum in New York.
