Diverse Voices Book Review host Hopeton Hay interviewed Preston Lauterbach, author of BEFORE ELVIS: The African American Musicians Who Made the King. In the interview Lauterbach highlighted the influence of African American musicians on Elvis Presley. He noted that Elvis's first hit, "That's All Right," was originally recorded by Arthur Crudup, and songs like "Hound Dog" and "Mystery Train" had African American origins. Lauterbach also explored the economic exploitation of Black artists and the cultural appropriation by white artists. He shared insights into the evolution of R&B and its impact on pop music in the 1970s, emphasizing the importance of recognizing Black music's roots and contributions to American culture. Preston Lauterbach is author of the American music classic The Chitlin' Circuit (2011) as well as Beale Street Dynasty (2015) and Bluff City (2019). He has co-authored three memoirs with significant figures in Black music, including Brother Robert (2020) with the stepsister of bluesman Robert Johnson, Timekeeper (2021) with Memphis soul drummer Howard Grimes, and the Blind Boys of Alabama biography Spirit of the Century. Eso me causó una impresión inolvidable, aunque ella es casi una desconocida”.DISCO 1 RHIANNON GIDDENS & JUSTIN ROBINSON Marchin Jaybird DISCO 2 EL ÚLTIMO DE LA FILA Aviones plateados DISCO 3 YOUNG GUN SILVER FOX Born To DreamDISCO 4 EDDY SMITH & THE 507 Love Sick DISCO 5 VALERIE JUNE & The Blind Boys of Alabama Changed DISCO 6 CANDICE IVORY Hard Down Lie DISCO 7 DANI DEL TORO ______________________ DISCO 8 CANDICE IVORY Hoodoo Lady DISCO 9 MARY CHAPIN CARPENTER Bitter Ender Escuchar audio

Valerie June's journey to what we might call ‘cult stardom' hasn't been easy. “I was cleaning houses while playing bars & clubs at night. And I had a vision that I would not make it - my music wouldn't reach its audience through regular means - it would reach its audience through musicians. My friends would help me. I'm a musician's musician”. Working through a talented community of musicians that has included Booker T Jones, Brandi Carlile and none other than Mavis Staples, eventually brought Valerie June together with her own audience. For her new project, June works with Blind Boys of Alabama, Norah Jones, DJ Cavem Moetavation and M Ward, supremo guitarist and producer of new album Owls, Omens and Oracles. I wanted to get her view of her own music, because the music business loves to put artists in lanes, boxes and pigeon holes. How on earth did an eclectic artist like June slip through the cracks? Her music has been described by others as an amalgam of soul, gospel, Appalachian folk, bluegrass, country, spiritual pop, African blues and my own favourite…cosmic rock. How does she describe her music in response to this assessment? With a joyful guffaw and an emphatic reaction: “I'm a singer-songwriter. I follow the songs, whatever they want to be is what I do. I'm kinda like their servant. All those names related to the music - I used to get attached to those and now I don't ”.In Jeff Tweedy's entertaining memoir World Within a Song, the author, singer songwriter and Wilco frontman says: “Taking something old and making it sound modern is nothing new”. And yet obsessing over your references, but melding them into something that is uniquely you is one of the key themes for artists of longevity. Both concepts are critical to June's work.“I do commune with the ancestors. I know I'm standing on the shoulders of many who came before me. I feel them beside me as I'm talking now. I'm not doing this by myself. I wanted to understand my people through music, and I got there through studying the blues”. Most songs come to me as voices. I'll try this instrument and be like “no, not that one…like Goldilocks. I try many different instruments to connect that voice to what it wants. Then, I found a team of people to listen to and understand”. If Valerie June really is the Goldilocks of songcraft, the results are indeed nourishing.Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

Michael Jerome had been drumming in a post-industrial metal band when he auditioned for Richard Thompson in 1999, little knowing he would be this brilliant guitarist's percussive foil for the next 25 years and counting. Jerome also has played with Charlie Musselwhite, the Blind Boys of Alabama and, for several years, John Cale. He's been Better Than Ezra's drummer since 2009 and played and toured with Slash for his latest album—and what started as an experimental side project is now moving center stage: The Third Mind, the improvisatory psychedelic band assembled by Dave Alvin and Victor Krummenacher. As thoughtful in conversation as he is dazzling behind his kit, Jerome tells how he developed his unique style and adapts it for each project—and he relates what it's like to be in Los Angeles now as he tries to help friends and others who have lost almost everything in the catastrophic wildfires. By any description, Randall Bramblett can claim a varied career. Aside from the fact that he's released no fewer than 15 solo albums, as a solo artist, he's also been a much in-demand session player, having worked with Gregg Allman, Bonnie Raitt, Robbie Robertson, Elvin Bishop, Steve Winwood, Widespread Panic, and any number of others. That's hardly surprising considering the fact that he's a multi-instrumentalist who's adept on keyboards, saxophones, flute, guitar, mandolin, and harmonica.Bramblett's career dates back to the early ‘70s when he played a major role in the band Sea Level, a jazzy spin-off from the Allman Brothers Band. In the years since, he's continued to pursue a decidedly varied array of genres, including rock, jazz, blues and R&B. With his new album, Paradise Breakdown, he shares a similar set of sounds, making it an ideal showcase for his verve and versatility. Ricky McKinnie, the leader of the Blind Boys of Alabama, was born and raised in Atlanta, where he got his start singing in the church alongside his mother. Not long after that, while still in his teens, he embarked on a career as a singer and a drummer, often performing with a band called the Soul Searchers. Around the age of 20, he began to lose his eyesight, but as Ricky says, he never lost his vision. After playing with the Blind Boys of Alabama from time to time, he became an official member of the group in 1989, and since then, in various roles, he's helped lead the band through years of success, fame, and Grammy Awards. Now the group is the subject of a fascinating new book called Spirit of the Century: Our Own Story. Sid talks to Ricky about why the Blind Boys have endured for so long, their hit version of “Amazing Grace,” what he's learned over decades as a blind musician, and the song that always gets the crowd out of their seats.

The madness comes in for a landing with this, the tenth episode of Regarding Roger. Masters of Digression Chaz and Wolfie go all out in this drain-bamaged diversionary listen-through of the epic classic rock radio track Eclipse, the last track on Dark Side of the Moon. Redux follows suit, and thus we conclude the heavy lifting of season two, listening to Dark Side of The Moon Redux for the listener, so the listener doesn't have to. Join our hosts as they meander through Spotify rankings of Pink Floyd versus so many other artists we forget how many are covered. Chaz raves on and on about Live From Daryl's House, the internet show of Daryl Hall, and convinces Wolfie to get hooked in with Daryl and his friends like Smokey Robinson, Sammy Hagar, Allen Stone, Fitz and the Tantrums, Tommy Shaw, Rick Nielson, Kenny Loggins, CeeLo Greene, Darius Rucker, Train, Rob Thomas, Joe Walsh, Howard Jones, Chromeo, KT Tunstall, Ben Folds, Grace Potter, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Toots and the Maytals, Nick Lowe, the Bacon Brothers…and so many more. Wax nostalgic with Chaz about having Kyra Sedgwick walk across his blanket at a Bacon Brothers concert. Ah, the memories. And yes, we get back to listening to the redux version of Eclipse. We wrap up this listen season with comparisons to season one, what Lulu had going for it that Dark Side of the Moon Redux did not. If there had been more coverage, better press, more content, and greater context shared by the artist would it have been better received? If Roger hadn't tried to sing, if he hadn't added poetry and voiceovers, would it still be something you can listen to? The main question persists…why Roger, why? When the hosts start pining for the improvisational stylings of Metallica and Lou Reed, you know it's about time to wrap it up. Rather, the guys draw it out, going further out on a Rocket to Uranus than they ever have before. New heights in digressionary diversion and pointless nonsense, this episode really captures the essence of our final adjudication of Dark Side of the Moon Redux. Hearing Eclipse delivered with a James Hetfield staccato is worth the price of admission alone. We wrap it up with a bow – here's the message: life ain't all dark. That's the big epiphany of this album – that and we've determined that the answer to life, the universe and everything really is 42. Thanks, Roger, here's your towel. Now…what would Daryl do? Roger – listen to Daryl, he is the king of Redux. Find out for yourself – tune in at Live From Daryl's House.
The Blind Boys of Alabama are a legendary American gospel group founded in 1939 at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Deaf and Blind in Talladega, Alabama. Originally called the Happy Land Jubilee Singers, the group consisted of mostly visually impaired students who found solace and inspiration in singing together. The original members were Clarence Fountain (baritone), George Scott (baritone and guitarist), Johnny Fields (bass), Velma Traylor (tenor), and Olice Thomas (baritone). Though the lineup has changed throughout the years, with none of the original members remaining, the core mission of the Blind Boys of Alabama has stayed consistent: creating uplifting and powerful gospel music. The Blind Boys of Alabama are credited with pioneering a unique approach to gospel, incorporating elements of soul, blues, and R&B into their sound. Their music has resonated with audiences for decades, and they've achieved incredible success, including: Winning six Grammy Awards Being inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame Receiving the National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts The Blind Boys of Alabama have also collaborated with a wide range of artists from various genres, including Prince, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, Bonnie Raitt, and Ben Harper. Their enduring legacy continues to inspire new generations of musicians and listeners alike. He's won a fistful of Grammys, but the one thing he hasn't done in all that time is a solo record. Until now. Rumble Strip is a collection of instrumentals, a few songs, and a surprising cover or two. John Leventhal plays some of these tunes in-studio. 1. Floyd Cramer's Dream 2. JL's Hymn No. 2 3. Jimmy Carter (NOT the 39th U.S. president) is a legendary gospel singer and co-founder of The Blind Boys of Alabama. The group has been around for decades and they've just released their first album in six years, “Echoes of the South,” which is also the title of the first radio show they ever appeared on in the mid-1940s. Jimmy tells Tom about his love of gospel, what it was like touring in the south during segregation, and the advice he'd give to young musicians as he's just retired at 91 years old.
It's a high-stakes weekend ahead for world leaders arriving in India for the G20 summit. For President Joe Biden, it's an opportunity to showcase the United States' take on the global world order, in the absence of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. It's a pitch that not only matters for America's standing abroad but also for Biden's own ratings at home, which new polling shows are struggling even within his own camp. To discuss all this, we are joined by Evan Osnos, who profiled President Biden in his book Joe Biden: American Dreamer, and Mona Charen, policy editor for The Bulwark. Also on today's show: Mexican author, poet and women's rights activist Gabriela Jaurgeui; Wall Street Journal reporter Melissa Korn; Ricky McKinnie & Jimmy Carter of The Blind Boys of Alabama gospel group To learn more about how CNN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy
It's a bonus episode! Here's a little radio piece I made back in January to promote a Blind Boys of Alabama concert here in Olympia. The gospel singing group has been in existence since 1939 or so, with its members changing over time... you know, like Menudo, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band or the London Philharmonic. I spoke with Ricky McKinnie, who's been in the group since 1989. He tells me about his background in gospel music, his own experience of blindness, the group's latest Grammy nomination, and the ins and outs of a group that has been evolving for over three quarters of a century. Short and sweet, hope you like it!
Ben Harper is a 3x Grammy winner who has amassed international praise for his genre-traversing body of work. He joins Rhett on this episode to talk about his life as a young musician, the creative projects he's currently working on, and shares the advice he would give his 21-year old self. The two dive into the craft of songwriting and Ben tells Rhett about the time that Leonard Cohen visited his family's music store. Ben Harper has produced albums by Mavis Staples, Rickie Lee Jones, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Natalie Maines, Ziggy Marley, and others. An inveterate collaborator, Harper has also recorded with a diverse span of artists ranging from John Lee Hooker, Charlie Musselwhite, to Ringo Starr, Keith Richards and, most recently, Harry Styles, to contribute his signature guitar work to the superstar's chart-topping album, HARRY'S HOUSE. Harper joined Styles for an astounding 12 nights of performances at The Kia Forum in Los Angeles this past fall. As a child of the 1970's, vinyl records were intrinsic to Ben Harper's understanding of and approach to music. “If somebody came to the house and said 'We're gonna repossess either your refrigerator or your turntable,'" he states today, "they would've been hauling out the fridge.” Growing up, the 3x Grammy-winner and heralded lap steel guitarist/vocalist's taste jumped from Ozzy Osbourne to Robert Johnson to Funkadelic to Jackson Browne on any given day. To get to those places, he points to varied avenues of discovery, from the underground world of skateboarding to his family's folk music shop and museum. That same diverse recipe eventually led to an equally unique list of collaborators over the years, including Ringo Starr, Eddie Vedder, Harry Styles, Natalie Maines and The Blind Boys of Alabama. On today's program, Ben recounts an emotional day spent with soul legend Solomon Burke, finding the blues buried in hip-hop, and the importance of communicating with our former selves. Ben's latest album Wide Open Light is out now, wherever you get physical or digital music. Visit benharper.com for tour dates, socials and more.
