Crystal McKenzie recently spoke with Amos Lee, who dropped his latest album Transmissions on August 9th, and also put out Honeysuckle Switches: The Songs of Lucinda Williams last year. He got into the struggles he has with connecting to folks in a digital world. He also talked about Solomon Dorsey, his stand up bassist using a bow at times to create richer tones in the music. Plus the first time he ever met Jimmy Buffet, who absolutely loved Amos Lee's music.
Throughout his music career, singer-songwriter Amos Lee has cultivated a large female fanbase and also owes a lot of his early start to Norah Jones (a female!). He's about to hit the road co-headlining with folk music and queer icons, The Indigo Girls. In our conversation, he talks about the atmosphere he's going for in concert and it's not a very bro-centered vibe. His latest album Transmissions further proves his case with a gorgeous sonic palette that includes country music, indie folk, folk rock and acoustic music sounds. Recorded with his longtime band in a studio in rural Marlboro, NY, the songs came out as warm as the reclaimed church wood it was built out of.Amos dives into topics like how he feels about kids, to his work with cancer patients, to the benefits of caring for your mental health and music. He touches on anxiety and overstimulation (mostly prompted by my anxiety!) and overcoming adversity. He also talks about being a mentor for the Black Opry residency at WXPN in his town of Philadelphia and explains what a Hoagiemouth is. Amaze and delight at the wonderful Amos Lee.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Interested in sponsoring us? Episode 106 - Kenny Barnwell - Touring The World and Making it all Work on the Road - Parenting Via FacetimeParenting while travelling the world seems almost impossible, Kenny takes us behind the curtain - get a v.i.p. backstage pass to life on the road and being a Dad, here on Dad Space. In Kenny's words: I like to say that the event business rescued me because before I started my event production career at 18 years old in Atlanta, GA as a Stagehand. I was a high school drop out, homeless, and strung out on drugs. Production work was medicinal for me in the early days.As a Stagehand, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do yet, so I worked my ass off in every area of production, from Audio, Lighting, to staging, and learned as much as I could.I then spent time bouncing around as a freelancer and stagehand doing gig after gig, honestly thinking my new career is turning into a J.O.B.Same stuff, different gig. I was working hard and doing the work I loved, but not in the capacity in which I wanted to. I wanted to go on tour, travel the world, and work directly WITH the tours, like the touring crew I've worked around while I've been a local crew hire.I felt like I had plenty of experience, just needed some direction, or know someone, or...? I just wasn't sure. One day I was working a gig as a Stagehand and a touring crew guy I was working with gave me a bit of coaching that changed everything for me.He gave me the bit of clarity I was looking for. That bit of advice and encouragement fueled a spark within me that set me on a path to finding my passion for Backline and Production Management.Since, I've built a 20+ year career working on tours in Backline, and as a Stage Manager, Production Manager, and Tour Manager on tour with artists such as Travis Tritt, Trace Adkins, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Bon Jovi, Chris Isaak, Amos Lee, Sara Barellies, Seal, Stray Kids, Korn, Jonas Brothers, and more.I'm the co-founder of a concert promotions company in Tampa, the author of two career development books, creator of two online career courses, and I'm a career/life coach.https://www.crewcoach.co/___https://dadspace.ca/
Dan has been a Chris Kasper fan since he first heard him on WXPN over 15 years ago. Chris sits down to talk about growing up a metalhead drummer, surrounded by a whole family of musicians. From loud drums and Led Zeppelin to discovering bluegrass and Appalachian folk while living in West Virginia, Chris reminisces on moving to Philadelphia almost 20 years ago, meeting peers like Amos Lee, Ben Arnold and Birdie Busch at Dawson Street Pub, playing shows at The Fire, and growing into the Americana singer-songwriter that we all know. Improvisation, uncertainty, working in the moment: these are all things that Chris loves to employ when making records, and his newest is no exception. Chris Kasper's latest LP, 'Sunlight In An Empty Room' is out now, available wherever you get digital music, and on vinyl at his website. Photo by Kiley Ryan
Sarah & Shannon are no strangers to the music industry. Together they span decades of hard work, songwriting, touring, and perseverance. Shannon LaBrie's undeniable voice and musicianship have been described as “nothing short of breathtaking” by American Songwriter and NPR added her heroic anthem Firewalker to their Top 20 of 2020. Sarah Holbrook and her three sisters make up the genre-twisting spellbinding band SHEL with whom she wrote and performed for over 15 years. As a violinist and multi-instrumentalist she has earned her way onto stages with Amos Lee, Michelle Branch, Emmy Lou Harris and more. As a duo they span genres, coasting in and out of LaBrie's soulfulness and Holbrook's folk roots and unveiling a whole new phenomenon in the blend of their distinctive vocal tonalities and the arsenals of instruments they play. The “Folk Soul” duo is set to release their debut record in early 2025 and are headed out on tour with Maia Sharp and Bonnie Raitt in May of 2024. To keep up to date with their upcoming tours and releases follow them on Spotify and Instagram.

The daughter of two preacher's kids, Pieta Brown's early upbringing in Iowa was in a rural outpost with no furnace, running water, or TV. There, she was exposed to traditional and rural folk music through her father, Greg Brown, the now beloved Midwestern folk singer. Later, while living with her mother in Birmingham, Alabama during her formative years, Pieta drew on and expanded these influences and began writing poems and composing instrumental songs on piano. By the time she left home at 18 she had lived in at least 19 different houses and apartments between Iowa and Alabama. In her early 20's, after experiencing what she describes as "the songs calling,” Pieta started experimenting with the banjo and eventually picked up a 1930's Maybell arch-top guitar during a visit to her father's place and never looked back. Emerging from a disjointed and distinctly 'bohemian' upbringing, Pieta began performing live and making independent recordings soon after teaching herself how to play guitar. "I grew up around a lot of musicians and artists living on the fringe, and have always felt most at home among them," Pieta says.Continually revealing new layers as both a songwriter and performer, Pieta is being recognized as one of modern Americana's true gems. In recent years Pieta has released multiple highly critically acclaimed albums, with much attention being paid not only to her distinct sound and style, but also the power of her singing and songwriting, including fan favorite Paradise Outlaw (2014 Red House, which Bon Iver master mind, Justin Vernon, called his “favorite recording made at our studio.”) Pieta has toured North America with Mark Knopfler, and toured various regions of the U.S., Australia and Canada with John Prine, Amos Lee, Brandi Carlisle, JJ Cale, Ani Difranco, Mavis Staples, and Calexico among others. She has co-written songs with and made recent guest appearances on albums by Calexico, Amos Lee, and Iris Dement, whose latest masterpiece Workin' On A World (2023) Pieta co-produced. Pieta's songs and music have been heard in various TV Shows and indie films including Everything Will Be Fine (Wim Wenders). With the release of her most recent album Freeway (September 2019, Righteous Babe) co-produced by Bon Iver drummer, S. Carey, followed by multiple experimental collaborations since with various artists including JT Bates, S.Carey, and Howe Gelb & The Colorist Orchestra, as well as a new instrumental based side-project she calls Sylvee & The Sea, Pieta's music and artistry continue to rise.~ "...a style and a sensuality that's all her own...."- Pop Matters~ "Among the top tier of songwriters today..." - FAME (Folk and Acoustic Music Exchange)~ "...a gifted singer-songwriter whose lyrics are pieces of polished poetry" - Huffington PostPieta's WebsiteSRTN Website

NPR says, "She's a savvy student of '60s film soundtracks, jazz-pop stylists, and Brill Building songcraft, nodding to her influences at every turn. But her take on those stylized musical languages is so fresh and fluent that the referencing never feels cumbersome." Her original song "Lucky" was featured in the Coca-Cola "Footprints" ad from the 2014 Winter Olympics. The Texas native began crafting her signature sound while performing in Austin's local club circuit for years before releasing her debut LP, Take To The Sky, in 2009. About her performance, Vulture praises the burgeoning actress for her "weightless, soaring scat arias," The Wrap says, "Kat Edmonson emerges as the Teresa Stratus of off-off-Broadway." "The Hang" imagines the final hours of the life of Socrates as he asks his friends to use every moment left to think on virtue.Matt Wilson gained national exposure as the "Piano Man" in the First National Tour of Billy Joel and Twyla Tharp's Tony-award-winning musical Movin' Out. Here with the launch of the fantastic new rock anthem Thin Ice, we talk to singer/songwriter Sonia Leigh. 'Thin Ice' is a hard hitting anthem fueled with pure rock and roll energy. With nods to The Killers, Bruce Springsteen, and Joan Jett, its growl calls for burning down the barriers around one's self to realize full potential. It highlights the feeling of walking a tightrope of self-doubt that can keep you in a self-created prison. ‘Thin Ice' emulates the courage to step into your power and soar. At 17, Sonia left home due to her family's issues with her sexuality. Hers is a story of owning her true self and finding the artistry to express it. Sonia Leigh's musical style cannot be put in a box. From Hip-Hop to Country to Pop and Rock and Roll. Her Southern Ground debut album, 1978 December, was where Sonia made her country catapult. The first single off the album "My Name Is Money," hit Top 40 at US Country Radio. She also co-wrote the Zac Brown Band #1 singles "Goodbye in Her Eyes" and "Sweet Annie". She canopies several projects to umbrella her different styles, such as hip hop/rock duo TYGR TYGR AKA ELYVN: ELYVN with Daphne Willis (Position Music). Other projects include low-fi 90's hip-hop duo Indica Girlz, and the mysterious grunge-pop project Rob The Man, all pending follow-up releases in 2023. Sonia has toured the world with the Zac Brown Band, Blackberry Smoke, Amos Lee, Melissa Etheridge, Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Joan Jett, and many more.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Brooke Annibale over Zoom video.Indie singer/songwriter Brooke Annibale released new album Better By Now through Nettwerk Music Group. A fearless new collection of songs, Brooke has both emboldened her sound on Better By Now as well as entered a new phase of life after making significant strides in her mental-health journey and saying “I do” to her wife. “I wrote this song in early January 2021,” stated Brooke. “We had literally just put the christmas tree out on the curb, and I felt this terrible sentimental feeling for it. This was also the same week as the Capitol attack. We had pushed through 2020, looking at 2021 as some kind of savior, but once it arrived nothing really changed. There was still the same intensely hostile political discourse and the pandemic continued raging on. It felt like things were getting worse somehow, when I hoped for it to be better by now. Reflecting on that time, it taught me that expecting a perfect external outcome will not lead to feeling better. I've got to do the internal work to have any kind of peace with the roller coaster of life.” Produced by Christian “Leggy” Langdon (Joseph, Amos Lee) and Matthew E White (Natalie Prass, Dan Croll), Better By Now features 10 blossoming indie-pop tracks that Brooke describes as a “spectrum of emotions.” In her trademark layered approach, the Pittsburgh-born, Rhode Island-based artist reflects on love, anxiety, depression, and how two seemingly opposing forces can exist at once. “The album is basically half about falling in love and half about mental health.” Earlier this summer, Brooke teased a couple songs from her new album, including the “immediately catchy” (FLOOD) lead single “What If You” and the “soaring, ethereal pop song” (Brooklyn Vegan) “5 AM” accompanied by the Genéa Gaudet-directed video. In celebration of Pride Month, Brooke also shared an inspiring op-ed via Atwood Magazine on representation, equality, authentic connection, and her journey to self-acceptance. Brooke's expressive and beautifully thoughtful songwriting creates a dreamy and enticing sonic landscape. We want to hear from you! There's a lot of buzz around town about the inaugural September 15-17 Annapolis Songwriters Festival. And with anything inaugural, it's hard to know what to expect. That is where we come in! We sat down with Kris and Laura from Rams Head Presents (a sister to all the other Rams Head businesses) to find out. And in a word... OMG!! There is a lot to digest, but it is three days long, encompasses venues from Westgate Circle to City Dock, has more than 70 (yes 70) free performances, has several paid performances, and will be an incredible time for music lovers! Rams Head has the experience as they have done the world-famous Key West Songwriters Festival for years, and Annapolis really made a lot of sense. And while there are internationally known songwriters coming to town, they did not forget the wealth of talent right here and you can hear from local scribes like Skribe (see what I did there), Jimi Haha, Brandon Hardesty, Ruben Dobbs, and more. Some of the national names you know will include Amos Lee, Jake Owen, Lucinda Williams, Fantastic Negrito, Josh Ritter, James McMurtry, Madison Cunningham, and Robert Randolph! Robert Randolph is kicking off the festival with a free event at MC3 on September 15th at 5:00 pm, along with Dean Rosenthal, Skribe, Jimi Haha, and Honest Lee Soul! You will be hard-pressed to find a downtown Annapolis venue without live music over these three days--and even on the water with a concert on the Harbor Queen and Songwriters on the Severn! So much going on. Have a listen! LINKS: Annapolis Songwriters Festival (Website - Tickets) Annapolis Songwriters Festival (Facebook) Annapolis Songwriters Festival (Instagram)
