I wanted to bring Connor Rush onto KakeBytes to talk about teaching himself how to program in Java as an 11 year old and how he jumpstarted the development of his very own video game studio Fyre Games. Connor is a 19 year old video game developer that is getting ready to release his third game, Summerland, on Steam in December and will be free to play. His first two games, Into the Unknown and Welcome to the Dreamscape, are free to play on Steam. Summerland is a first-person narrative-driven game that explores how the line between life and death is blurred. Players will explore Summerland as Matthew, a detective in over his head, and confront themes of subjective morality and the afterlife. In addition to video game development, Connor is a musician creating music with his band Auric Echoes. You can follow Connor at Fyre Games at their official website and on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Steam. You can follow Connor's art rock band Auric Echoes on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Music. Most of us know the answer to whether or not video games cause violence, but for this week's episode I brought back Patrick Scott Patterson to talk about the "why." The correlation between violence in society and violence in video games has been a pervasive argument that has been a sideline to national tragedies for decades — most recently with the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida. Scott joined me on the inaugural episode of KakeBytes to talk about the importance of preservation with regards to video game history and I was more than happy to bring him back this week to talk to him about his history with video game advocacy. In the newest episode of KakeBytes, I sit down with Brian Colin! Brian is most often recognized because his unique art style captured gamers in 1986 with the release of the arcade game Rampage. In today's interview Brian and I discuss his time working in the film industry, for Bally-Midway, that time he was paid to start a game development company (called Game Refuge, Inc.), and then that time he got to be in a film (I'll give you two guesses which movie. In today's episode, I sit down with 35-year development veteran Warren Davis! He's most well known in gaming for his role as the programmer for the arcade classic Q*bert, but we talk about so much more! Warren regaled me with tales of answering a newspaper ad to work for Gottleib, surviving the video game crash of the 80's (and getting a job out of it!), a stint as a Disney Imagineer, as well as his longtime love: acting.
