Rebecca Rowland returns to The Dark Mind Podcast to discuss her new novel Eminence Front, releasing January 20th from CLASH Books.Set on a single New England street during a brutal snowstorm, the novel follows neighbors as an ancient entity preys on their secrets, sins, and regrets. We explore why snow creates such effective psychological horror, from its sound-muffling properties to the sensation of being smothered alive.Rebecca reveals how the title came from a Who song about false facades and self-deception, themes that run through every character on the street. We discuss agoraphobia as both vulnerability and advantage, dementia as a Cassandra narrative device, and why betrayal trauma appears in all of her work.Rebecca shares her extensive research process, from the science of snow to real historical blizzard accounts that inspired scenes in the book.We dig into the challenge of writing deeply flawed characters who are neither heroes nor villains, just people making terrible choices under pressure.Rebecca also talks about her novella Shagging the Boss, her background in psychology, and why she believes most people are fundamentally good despite writing horror. This conversation goes deep into quiet horror, art house atmosphere, and what happens when suburban pretense collapses under supernatural weight.Guest Websitehttps://rowlandbooks.comBooks Page (All Titles & Anthologies)https://rowlandbooks.com/the-booksUnburied: A Collection of Queer Dark Fictionhttps://rowlandbooks.com/unburiedGeneration X-ed Anthologyhttps://rowlandbooks.com/generation-xedGuest Social MediaInstagramhttps://www.instagram.com/rebecca_rowland_books/Blueskyhttps://bsky.app/profile/rebecca-rowland.bsky.socialX (Twitter)https://x.com/BecRowlandTikTokhttps://www.tiktok.com/@beccalrowGoodreads Author Pagehttps://www.goodreads.com/author/show/4738797.Rebecca_RowlandDenver Horror Collective Profilehttps://denverhorror.com/rebecca-rowland/Buy Rebecca Rowland's WorkAuthor Hub for All Books (various retailers linked per title)https://rowlandbooks.com/the-booksAmazon – Rebecca Rowland Bookshttps://www.amazon.com/s?k=rebecca+rowland+authorThriftBooks – Author Pagehttps://www.thriftbooks.com/a/rebecca-rowland/924284/Godless – Rebecca Rowland Page (eBooks and more)https://godless.com/products/rebecca-rowlandPowell's Books – Search Results for Rebecca Rowlandhttps://www.powells.com/books/search?query=Rebecca+RowlandGoodreads – Works by Rebecca Rowlandhttps://www.goodreads.com/author/list/4738797.Rebecca_RowlandDead Sky Publishing – White Trash & Recycled Nightmareshttps://deadskypublishing.com/portfolio-item/white-trash-recycled-nightmares/(Unburied, Generation X-ed, American Cannibal, and other titles also link out to individual purchase and audio options from the books hub on her site.)Support The Dark Mind Podcasthttps://www.patreon.com/c/thedarkmindpodcast

A true crime / survival mystery from the Siberian wilds: in August 1993, seven hikers entered the Hamar-Daban Mountains of Buryatia (near Lake Baikal)—and only one walked back out. What happened on that windswept ridge has been called the “Buryat Dyatlov Pass”: a sudden storm, a frantic descent, and then a cascade of bizarre symptoms—foaming at the mouth, blood, panic, and collapse—leaving six bodies scattered on an exposed ledge while a terrified teen survivor staggered to a river and found help.  Officials ruled hypothermia and closed the case. But the details refused to stay buried: claims of missing eyes later attributed to scavengers, questions about food and exhaustion, and theories ranging from toxic exposure to military testing to the possibility of cold/altitude-related pulmonary edema.  Inside this episode:The trek: Lyudmila Korovina leads six young hikers into the Hamar-Daban rangeThe turn: August 4–5 — a brutal storm hits at roughly 2,300 metersThe collapse: eyewitness survivor account of sudden convulsions and rapid deathsThe recovery: why the scene looked “impossible,” and what time + wildlife can doThe official file: why authorities said hypothermia—and what they dismissedTheories vs. evidence: separating folklore from what the record can actually supportThis is a case where nature, fear, and unanswered questions collide—and the only person who knows the final minutes had to live with them forever. We're telling that story tonight.

Of all the great voices of the miners during the West Virginia Mine Wars, Bill Blizzard is the only one to be able to see his work through to the very end. A UMWA leader, Blizzard witnessed the event's beginning in Paint Creek & Cabin Creek and was with the miners at the Battle of Blair Mountain, assuming the role of general.  As the name implies, Bill Blizzard was a storm for which the anti-union forces were not prepared. Rather than going at it chronologically, Matt consults a D8, which means we discuss one of our favorite things from the year which actually happened last: player housing! But there were a ton of things that happened in all of Blizzard's games this year, from Plunderstorm's return to Legion Remix, three Hearthstone expansions, and a ton of Diablo 4 seasons (though who can tell the difference between them). We also met new friends like Valentina, the lizard that was a part of a Hearthstonemarketing campaign we would die for, and King Krush, also a Hearthstone-based lizard. Probably a coincidence. The In Memoriam section this year is Warcraft Rumble. May it rest in peace. Then, all the other games that had us in a chokehold. But honestly, it's mostly the player housing. If you have a few minutes, please fill out our survey to tell us what you think about the podcast. Kick off the Best of 2025 with one of the most intense episodes we released on the Weekly Spooky horror podcast—a brutal winter survival horror story where a long-haul trucker gets trapped at a lonely truck stop after a sudden blizzard buries the world in white. The bathroom run turns into a nightmare when his tracks vanish, the store is locked and dark, and something moves in the storm—something too big, too patient, and too wrong to be a deer. Back in his cab, with fuel running low and the wind battering the doors, the real terror begins: nudges against the truck, glimpses of massive horns, and a towering creature with a skull-like face that keeps reappearing closer… like it's learning him.Glass splinters. The windshield gives. The gunshots don't do what they're supposed to do. And when the only safe place left is beneath his own trailer, he realizes the storm isn't trying to kill him nearly as much as whatever's hiding inside it.If you love cryptid horror, creature features, blizzard horror, and stories about being stranded with a monster, this is a Best of 2025 must-listen.I Was Hunted by a Cryptid in a Snowstorm — by Michael KelsoYou can purchase books from this author here: https://geni.us/michaelkelsoauthorhttps://www.reddit.com/user/Horror_writer_1717/

Today, we delve into the pressing meteorological phenomena affecting various regions across the United States. Our primary focus centers on the continuation of lake effect snow, particularly in the vicinity of lakes Erie and Ontario, as lingering heavy bands persist through midweek. As gale conditions prevail over Lake Erie, with winds reaching 30 to 35 knots and wave heights of 8 to 13 feet, we underscore the significant hazards posed to small craft and shoreline travel. Furthermore, we address the ongoing recovery efforts in the aftermath of a debilitating blizzard that has left over 150,000 without power, with Michigan bearing the brunt of the impacts. Additionally, we explore the forecast for Southern California, where moderate to strong Santa Ana winds precede a series of rain events that may provoke hazardous conditions, including potential mudslides and debris flows on recent burn scars.Takeaways:* The ongoing weather events include lake effect snow affecting areas downwind of the Great Lakes today.* California is experiencing moderate to strong Santa Ana winds, posing risks for hazardous conditions.* Power restoration efforts are underway following the extensive blizzard impacts that affected multiple states.* Significant rainfall is anticipated in Southern California midweek, leading to potential mudslides and flooding.* The recent magnitude 5.1 earthquake in Alaska prompted a tsunami information statement but no immediate warnings were issued.* Winter advisories and lake effect snow warnings remain active across various states, impacting travel conditions significantly.Sources[USGS — M5.1, 93 km N of Yakutat, AK | https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us7000rlhy][NWS Los Angeles (LOX) — Rain/Santa Ana Overview | https://www.weather.gov/lox/][NWS LOX Area Forecast Discussion | https://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?issuedby=LOX&site=LOX&product=AFD&format=CI&version=1][Iowa DOT/DPS — Plan to Reopen I-35 (News Release) | https://iowadot.gov/news/2025-12-29/iowa-dot-and-dps-plan-reopen-interstate-35-early-afternoon-december-29][KCRG — I-35 Fully Reopens (Local Confirmation) | https://www.kcrg.com/2025/12/29/i-35-fully-reopens-after-nearly-24-hour-blizzard-closure-north-central-iowa/?outputType=amp][NWS Baltimore/Washington (LWX) — High Wind Warning (Highland Co. Lord of Hatred was announced at The Game Awards -- though it was not related to The Statue -- and we have a ton to say about the details we have so far. Liz Patt preordered the expansion, and so therefore got to play one of two new classes, the Paladin, hands-on, and chats about it with us a bit. The other class remains a mystery, but our cohosts had some ideas for what they think the class may be, as well as what they wish it was.We also talked about all the various winter events we're experiencing over the next few weeks in all Blizzard's games. They're only here for a short while so get your holiday fill while you can.Plus, we ran down a bunch of little tips and tricks we've seen for player housing. It is a "Windy Edition" of the show as a winter blizzard sweeps through the region, but the news cycle is moving even faster than the gusts. Scott Hanlon and the team break down President Trump's high-impact primetime address, where the big headline wasn't a war announcement, but a "warrior dividend" heading into the pockets of nearly 1.5 million service members. The guys also dive into the bizarre investigative failures at Brown University following a campus shooting and sit down with Fargo Police Chief Dave Zabolsky to get the truth behind recent crime stats. Plus, we look at the future of health with Dr. Mike Jorgensen and check the "scene of the crime" in the grain markets with Lighthouse Commodities. Episode Highlights [00:01:10] The Warrior Dividend Scott reacts to President Trump's surprise announcement of a $1,776 "Warrior Dividend" for every member of the military—a morale booster funded by record tariff revenue. [00:01:37] The Brown University "Dumpster Fire" A deep dive into the "incompetence or cover-up" at Brown University. Why were security cameras turned off, and how did a suspect vanish from a room full of witnesses without a single cell phone video surfacing? [00:04:10] Fargo Police: Manhunts and Misperceptions Fargo Police Chief Dave Zabolsky joins the show to discuss the recent high-profile manhunt, the 10% reduction in city-wide crime, and why "Beat 5" is the current hotspot for shoplifting syndicates. [00:10:30] Blizzard Status Update Chief Meteorologist Dean Wysocki delivers a sobering travel report: 90 mph gusts in Southwest North Dakota and zero visibility in Grand Forks. Find out when the "deterioration" hits the FM area. [00:13:10] Signal vs. Noise: The Trump Address A breakdown of the President's "Landslide Mandate" speech. Scott asks the audience: Are you feeling the "Coldness" critics claim, or are you seeing the "Wham, Bam" results of the last 11 months? [00:27:50] MAHA: The 65-Point Wellness Reset Dr. Mike Jorgensen explains why the game is "rigged" against American health and how a wellness lab panel can help you "look under the hood" to fix chronic inflammation and gut damage. [00:32:00] Markets: Scene of the Crime David Spickler of Lighthouse Commodities analyzes the recent correction in soybeans and why he believes a "buy signal" is looming just in time for the new year.

Since Paladins were announced as the next class to join the roster in Diablo 4 in its next expansion Lord of Hatred -- and already playable with preorder -- Matt and Joe sat down this week to chat about both, but mostly Paladins and their history within the franchise. First, they dive into the place of Paladins within the franchise as contrasted by other classes. Blizzard seems to be cribbing heavily from Diablo 2, with almost all the classes from that game now available in D4. They touch on Paladins from D2, their famous fall, and how that led to the Crusaders from Diablo 3.The story we see in the cinematic also has our Paladin facing off against Mephisto while he inhabits Akarat's body, which he possessed at the end of the previous expansion, Vessel of Hatred. Akarat being one of the founders of the faith the Paladin belongs to, this is a deeply interesting contrast -- as well as a personal religious crisis in the making.
