Mark Pierce was a game designer at Atari and Bally Midway. We talk to him about the protracted development of Escape From The Planet of The Robot Monsters, the axonometric, somewhat baroque B-movie arcade adventure, and the conversely swift creation of the tile-stacking puzzler classic, KLAX. Pierce also shares some amusing anecdotes about scouting for muscular male models for the visually ground-breaking arcade beat-em-up, Pit Fighter, and provides us with a unique insight into why Atari faltered and ultimately folded in The Noughties.

Long, long ago in the land of Og there lived a one-eyed caveman by the name of Trog, and in that land there lived four friends: Rex and Bloop, Spike and Gwen. Let's control some colorful claymation dinos and grab some eggs in Bally/Midway's Trog - in PLAYmation! Why was the original game much different than the Trog that we got? Exactly who's cloaca did all these eggs come from? Is this the first arcade game to use claymation? What comic strip character did Jack Haeger base the titular character on? Listener questions this week put us in a moral quandary on whether we should give advice on converting a Neo Geo cab and the other asks us if the traditional arcade is ever going to come back - and we have some thoughts on that.

Talking Joe 209 - Spy Hunter & Paper Boy review - For Cobra Convergence 7 - The Best Hama Joe comic you've never heard of! Its the annual fan Cobra Convergence 7 where across the month Joe fan creators share new content! And the loose theme this year is spies, so what better tie in than to look at an unknown but GREAT comic from GI Joe Legend Larry Hama with the name SPYHUNTER in the tittle! Find out more about CC7 here: https://hcc788.com/ In this episode of next episode Mark and Tim are talking about what I am calling Larry Hama's best GI Joe comic that you have never heard of, Spy Hunter & Paper Boy, released May 2021. (Even if technically speaking it isn't GI Joe). Released May 2021, Spy Hunter & Paper Boy #1-6 (DC, $3.99 each): a "digital first" (but in reality digital only) comic arriving on DC's digital first channels including ComiXology, with all six issues released on the same day You can find the issues digitally on Amazon (formerly comiXology) link https://t.co/e4xMWUOT2x You can also find the issue in other places if you were to Google "spyhunter paperboy viewcomic" The series is written by Larry Hama with art by Mac Rey, and letters by Pat Brosseau and it features a crossover between two old video game franchises, Spy Hunter and Paper Boy. There are very few details publicly available about the book - all 6 issues were quietly released as "Digital first" in May 2021 without any sort of fanfare or publicity by DC. There was really nothing in the comic itself that explained what the series was or why it existed and never had a print release. This is some of the best GI Joe like work by Hama since his prime in the 80s at Marvel with some stunning art. You can read the series and listen or listen and then read it or just listen, whatever!. There are a few spoilers but we've tried not to go too heavy on details of plot. Mac Rey (artist) - Arkansas resident, Mathew “Mac Rey” Reynolds started out in comics back in the early days of Malibu on books like AIRMAN and THE PROTECTORS, more recently he has worked on THE MERCENARY SEA from Image Comics. And “The RUFF and REDDY SHOW” from DC comics. After working on a creator-owned project called VIC FALCON with G.I. JOE writer Larry Hama, they went on to work together on Spy Hunter & Paper Boy. Spy Hunter: a vehicular combat action game developed by Bally Midway and released for arcades in 1983. The object of the game is to drive down roads in the technologically advanced the fictitious G-6155 Interceptor car and destroy various enemy vehicles with a variety of onboard weapons. Paperboy is an arcade action game developed and published by Atari Games and Midway Games, and released in 1985. The player takes the role of a paperboy who delivers a fictional newspaper called The Daily Sun along a suburban street on his bicycle. The game was ported to many home systems beginning in 1986.

Since then, Paul designs and builds props for escape rooms, theme parks, haunted attractions and fests all over the world, as well as getting to meet all the fans of all those great games from so long ago! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jianetwork/support

This ongoing series is made to depress and to delight. What do we mean by that? Well, the pinball industry and the hobby around it has always been fragile. It has ups and downs which during its history has swung violently. Brilliant minds have come and gone. Many have been crushed by the emotional weight of competition and the stress of impending layoffs. Join us this month as we talk about the final Bally Manufacturing Corp games, really dumb corporate strategies, the art of an era, bodybuilding, terrible cabinet materials, a tangent for some reason about the MCU's Iron Man, and the end of Bally-Midway. Los sencillos «Who's Crying Now», «Don't Stop Believin'» y «Open Arms» llegaron al Top 10. In any video arcade, especially during the proverbial Golden Age of the Seventies and Eighties, it wasn't always the games on screen that first caught the eye but the colourful, imposing, sometimes lurid cabinets that housed them. This was bona fide pop art for the coin-op kids of America and beyond. Paul Niemeyer started his career at developer Bally Midway during the early Eighties, working on such titles as Ms. Pac-Man, Tapper and Spy Hunter. He also had a hand in creating such impressive cabinets as Discs of Tron, Satan's Hollow and the peculiar Wacko. Niemeyer tells us about the precision art of cutting and layering art screens, life at Midway during the Bally takeover, working with the so-called Bally Pinball art gods, the development of the notorious and enduring Mortal Kombat and having his homework marked by Sylvester Stallone.
Cloverleaf Radio's host The Host with the Most Jimmy Falcon welcomes Artist and Illustrator, Bally/Midway, Paul E. Niemeyer, Best known for his work on such games as "Tron" "Mortal Kombat" "Ms. Pac-Man" and every "Pac-Man" spin-off that followed, "Satan's Hollow" "Transformers" "Demolition Man" "Tapper" as well as numerous properties for Disney! Pull a stool up to the bar and prepare to be overpoured as we talk about Bally Midway's ode to the service industry, Tapper. Who was actually behind this strategic bartending simulator? How did a marketing opportunity lead to a lot of bad PR? Exactly who is this overworked bartender? How did Yakity-Yak Talking Teeth lead to Wacko, Timber, and Journey (and even to Golden Tee and Street Fighter: The Movie)? Plus plenty of chit-chat like a cautionary tale about clearing your Game Boy camera's memory before selling it, rocking out to some Clown Core, reminiscing about being tricked into learning stuff when playing Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, and discussing the love letter to 90s beat ‘em ups that is TMNT Shredder's Revenge.

TCW Podcast Episode 138 - Dave Nutting Associates This is our second half looking at Dave Nutting and specifically Dave Nutting Associates. We see how they are able change the industry by showing the viability of solid state Pinball. Despite the setback of not being able to license the technology to Bally/Midway they pressed on with developing video games. Specifically Gun Fight which had realistic, for the time, human analogs that could fire guns at each other. As they continued to show how well they were to Bally/Midway they ended up being bought out. Unfortunately by the time of the crash Dave Nutting Associates ended up being a small player in a crowded industry and was shut down in 1984. This week on the Game Deflators podcast, the guys interview the original Mortal Kombat artist, Paul Niemeyer. John and Ryan dive in deep to discuss Paul's illustrious career, stories on his life as an artist, and his thoughts on the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie. An artist of over 30 years, Paul began his career at Bally/Midway and created art for games like Tapper, PacMan Plus, Super PacMan, Professor PacMan, TRON, Satan's Hollow, Spy Hunter, WACKO, and an endless, anonymous list of prototype games. Paul has worked on a number of gaming projects over the years, but none have been more prestigious or well know than his work on Mortal Kombat. In 1992, Paul created the final illustrations of the Mortal Kombat logo and the artwork on the cabinet, control panels, and the header for one of the most well known games in video game history! Rampage | Created in 1986 by Bally Midway, this fan-favorite allowed players to wreak havoc on a cityscape as one of three colossal monsters. George, an ape, Ralph, a wolf, and Lizzie, a lizard (obvs). The beloved game was brought to the big screen with one of Hollywood’s biggest names, Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson, in 2018. Though the game has been licensed and recreated on many platforms, the Warner Bros movie remains the only legal conversion of the original medium. | Co-hosts Jacob Price & Aaron Mateer. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/convertible-content/support

We go Pac in time to review the Pac-Man games of 1983: Pac & Pal, Professor Pac-Man, and Jr. Pac-Man. Namco and Bally/Midway are not happy with each other and it's leading to a messy divorce. Pac-Man gets a pal that is either a ghost or a dog (but sadly not Forest Whitaker), receives a doctorate in annoying image quizzes, and leaves the missus to care for their first born. How did GCC contribute to the rise and fall of Pac-Man? Why did a stolen concept turn into the worst Pac-Man game? What makes Jr. Pac-Man's mazes thicc? Can it really be a Pac-Man game if it has no stick? Also discussed: art appreciation, the necessities of clearing your search history, Romeo + Juliet, and a tease for our upcoming Insert Coin commentary.

Order up! Ever go to a burger joint expecting the familiar, tasty bacon double with crispy onion rings you love, only to find out they've changed the menu to some sort of tofurky burger or something? Then you're all worried, but discover it's pretty tasty too? Episode 123 is kind of like that. This month, our nice Atari 2600, story-based podcast has been overrun by Intelevision bandits. They even ate all my onion rings! Now, every Sunday in June, we're featuring an Intelevision title. We kick things off with the iconic BURGERTIME from Bally Midway. Compared to the Atari port (which we covered on the podcast WAY back in episode 25!), does the Intelevision port stack up like your favorite bun full of meat, or more like trying to stack the ketchup packets at the bottom of the bag? A political hot button issue is the state of America's infrastructure. Our bridges, roads and buildings are crumbling before our eyes. It's a national crisis. And, yet, our politicians do nothing. What the liberal media WON'T tell you about, though, is the plague of mutated dinosaurs, werewolves and gorillas that are single-handedly (triple-handedly?) devouring our great cities and pooping the rubble into those devastated roads. The Atari 7800 port of the 1986 Bally Midway arcade classic RAMPAGE, our focus in episode 116 of ATARI BYTES, puts you in the role of those mutant monsters. Sure, politicians squabble while our buildings crumble, but they lack the style of an irradiated werewolf. Except you-know-who. From Vermont I think? It's just a rumor, but everyone hears the howling. Just sayin'. (In related news: I was once in a band called Dino Poop Rubble.) In the newest episode of KakeBytes, I sit down with Brian Colin! Brian is most often recognized because his unique art style captured gamers in 1986 with the release of the arcade game Rampage. In today's interview Brian and I discuss his time working in the film industry, for Bally-Midway, that time he was paid to start a game development company (called Game Refuge, Inc.), and then that time he got to be in a film (I'll give you two guesses which movie. Spoiler: The Rock is in it too). Be sure to find KakeBytes all over the web: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. You can check out my reward tiers and more about show at www.patreon.com/kakebytes.
