My guest today is Digital Curator for Contemporary Collections at The British Library. After graduating from Aberystwyth University with a degree in Library Studies and Art History, my guest was awarded an MA in Museum Studies at the University of Leicester. Then, having worked as curator of maps at the National Library of Scotland, my guest joined the British library, and began to devise creative reuses of digital collections, including via video games. This work has led to collaborations with The National Videogame Museum, AdventureX, International Games Month in Libraries and on research projects with UCL's Institute of Education, and Lancaster University's Litcraft initiative, which builds literary worlds in Minecraft.Exhibition: Digital Storytelling - The British Library (bl.uk)Events Series: Digital Storytelling events - The British Library (bl.uk) Thank you for listening to My Perfect Console. This week, Jacki and Lyle are joined by the absolutely incredible, inspirational Sophia Aubrey Drake. Sophia is a transgender woman currently living in Japan, where she is studying Japanese alongside her work in the games industry. Sophia has had a remarkable career. She initially worked for GAME and EA, and has been a languages teacher, a video games specialist at the National Video Game Museum, and a PR & Partnerships Manager in the past. She is now a freelance video game writer and indie game publishing scout, as well as being Developer Relations Manager & Evangelist at Steel Media, host of the Big Indie Pitch, public speaker, event manager, and everything in between at her very own Sophia Aubrey Drake Consultancy. Her incredible professional life is matched by her inspirational personal journey. In one of the most open and informative conversations on the podcast so far, Sophia discusses how she got into the games industry, and how her love of Pokémon, Smackdown, and Knights of the Old Republic among others inspired her to pursue a career in the games industry having originally studied psychology! Sophia opens up on her transition journey, including how she came out on stage while hosting the Big Indie Pitch, the challenges she has faced within the industry, and any advice she has for anyone going through a similar experience. Jacki discusses her own recent experience of certain prejudices, and Lyle is in awe throughout as Sophia opens up on her remarkable story. Finally, Sophia discusses how despite the fact that created media is becoming a lot more representative, public representation of the transgender community, and the LGBTQ+ community as a whole, is going backwards. She discusses how it is important that people understand that she, like many other trans people, just wants to be treated like a normal person, and how she would love it if trans people were turned into NPCs in games!Sophia refers to an article in The Guardian that tells the story of her transition journey, which can be found here: https://www.theguardian.com/society/2020/nov/10/female-feminisation-surgery-trans-woman-story-of-a-faceFor more information on the Big Indie Pitch, head to: https://www.bigindiepitch.com/Artwork by Daff KjellströmMusic by Lyle FultonGet in touch via lyle@dimoso.com or info@dimoso.comMore information at www.dimoso.com and www.therestispr.comFollow us on Twitter - @TheRestIsPR Hosted on Acast. All this talk about "slashing red tape" and a sudden zeal for deregulation as a magic bullet for growth made me climb aboard my soapbox. This episode starts with a rant and a reminder: regulation per se is no barrier to inclusive growth, and careless deregulation risks encouraging a race to the bottom in business and life. Do we want crappy, rubbish businesses exploiting people and planet for ever-diminishing returns on investment? I don't. Glad I've got that off my chest (and let me know what you think). Then an interview with engineer-turned-air-quality entrepreneur, Kate Barnard, whose business helps cities and governments achieve air quality standards and show they've done so.Air pollution contributes to around 40,000 deaths a year in the UK and more in many other parts of the world. Enjoy The Air sees cities as engineering systems. Kate explains how it catalyses behaviour and policy changes and the importance of "WIIFM" or "What's in it for me?"Also on the show today: lots of exciting events, funding for businesses and social enterprises, and more.Timings:0 - 1:30 Introduction1:30 I have a rant about de-regulation snd why fit-for-purpose regulation is a tool for sustainable growth, not a barrier6:12 Interview with Kate Barnard, Enjoy The Air32:32 Quick recap of last week's episode with Jon Barton, Vertebrate Publishing34:28 Upcoming events including an exhibition at the National Videogame Museum, the Off the Shelf and No Bounds Festivals, Peddler Market, Black History Month events in partnership with the African Heritage Forum36:30 Reminder of the Fair and Sustainable Economies Fund and Digital Innovation Grant programme (more details here)37:06 More events including Business Sheffield's Networking event and series of free virtual business workshops38:52 Reflections on this week's SCCCC "Winter Pressures Service" launch event – I went along and their work supporting elderly, isolated and vulnerable people and relieving pressure on the NHS is so important – CEO Mark Storey was on the show 6 years ago40:11 How to get in touch (email jamie@sheffieldlive.org ) and wrapping upThanks for listening!

Imagine if you had a full set of your favorite console. Now imagine you had a full set of every console ever made. With a combined 100 years of game collecting experience, Joe Santulli, John Hardie, and Sean Kelly amassed an epic collection of gaming consoles, games, and memorabilia. When they could have cashed in on our current state of crazy game selling and buying. they chose another route. Instead, the trio built an epic museum dedicated to preserving these artifacts and educating gamer of all ages on videogame history. On this week's episode, I chat with the team as they share stories of acquiring games back in the old days, the current state of the market, and why they chose to build a 10,000 sqft shrine to the medium they loved.Check out the National Videogame Museum at nvmusa.orgMy Twitter: @agamerlooksat40My Facebook: facebook.com/agamerlooksat40My Insta: @agamerlooksat40My Email: @gamerlooksat40My Phone Number: Ehhhhh, not gonna happen. :-D

We all know how much gaming and esports is taking off, but have you ever stopped for a moment to appreciate how it all began? Well, if you’re in the Dallas area, you can stop by the National Video Game Museum, located in Frisco, TX to see the history of the video game industry, where it’s heading next, and find ways to be a part of it all. The mission of the National Video Game Museum is simple, to “preserve the history of the videogame industry by archiving not only the physical artifacts but also the information and stories behind its creation.” And in this episode of All In With Esports, one of the co-founders of the museum, John Hardie, sits down to talk to Lewis about how it all began, what you can expect, and why he’s so excited to share this gem with everyone who has a passion for gaming and it’s history! To learn more about the museum, visit: www.nvmusa.org All In With Esports is part of the Esports Futuri Podcast Network. To see this show and all of our other shows, visit, esportsfpn.com.
Remember that you can always get in touch with us on our Facebook page, on Twitter, or with our Contact page. Don't forget to check the chapters tab in your podcatcher. This is a thing we're doing now, so keep an eye open for those. We had the incredibly rare privilege of talking with Philip Oliver - one half of The Oliver Twins - about their history in the British Game Development scene; from the early 80s all the way up to now. We talked about Dizzy, the EverCade, BitlzGames, and everything in between. Here's a sample of the full show notes - make sure to click through and check them out.Show NotesI honestly don't know how we pulled this one off - to be fair The Oliver Twins are really nice people - we had Philip Oliver on this episode of the show. Philip Oliver is one half of the Oliver Twins, whose work includes (among many, many things) the Dizzy series of games.Grab your popcorn, we're gonna hit you with nostalgia- SquidgeSeriously both Andrew and Philip have been involved in so many games over the years, their official website lists 55 of them and that's just the earlier titles. And this is something that Philip mentions in the episode:30 games on the PC; 10 games on the PS1; one game on the N64: Glover; 19 PS2 games; 10 Xbox games; 11 GameCube games; 13 Wii games; 9 PS3; 21 Xbox 360; and 30 handheld games... and that's just the Blitz Games ones- Philip OliverSo combining that total (154) with the 55 "Oliver Twins" games from their website - source; I've not included the collections titles - we get 209 games. That's a lot of games, and not a duffer among them.Let's Talk About DizzyFor those who don't know, Dizzy is a super cute egg character who goes on platforming and puzzle based adventures.Although Dizzy started out on the 8-bit consoles, there was a brand new game - Wonderful Dizzy - launched a few months before we recorded this interview. We'd always wanted to interview both Andrew and Philip, so the launch of the new game drove us to reach out proper. But one thing we didn't realise about the newer Dizzy titles (aside from the rights issue - technically Dizzy is owned by EA now) is that all of the profits went to charity. In the case of the Dizzy collection on the Evercade, the profits were given to the National Videogame Museum in Sheffield.Wonderful Dizzy & Looking BackBut why make a new Dizzy on a retro platform:It is so expensive to make a game on a modern platform- Philip OliverAnd at the time the Spectrum Next was starting to pick up steam; so why not combine that with a new Dizzy game?We suddenly realised that we can't make a game that is worse than any of the other games, and that was absolutely obvious... so we were thinking that whatever we create, now that it's some 25-30 years later, that everybody perceives it to be at least as good, if not better. Iain Simons from The National Videogame Museum, UK joins us to discuss their current project: Animal Crossing Diaries. We learn how the museum evolved itself into being over the years, ponder what video games mean, ask, “how do we preserve that meaning through history,” and learn how Animal Crossing may be the perfect vehicle to set that example. Episode 26 Claire Mead is an English/French freelance curator with museums and heritage sites specialising in making collections and programming more inclusive, specifically in terms of women's narratives and LGBTQI narratives. Claire also fences with foil and longsword. Since recording the episode she has taken the post of Programme Manager at the National Videogame Museum. In this episode we have a fascinating conversation about how a traditionally white, male perspective of history has overlooked many women, people of colour and those from the LGBTQI community. Did you know that one of the foremost fencers of the 18th century was black, and another was trans? I mention two African-born emperors of Rome. These are: Lucius Septimius Severus, who was a Roman emperor from 193 to 211. He was born in Leptis Magna, at that time a Roman province in Africa. His eldest son, Lucius Septimius Bassianus, commonly known as Caracalla, was Emperor from 211 to 217. In the second half of the podcast we talk about Claire's webcomic The Girls' School of Knighthood and also discuss depictions of women holding swords in art, particularly Judith slaying Holofernes. To see the paintings we talk about, see this episode's webpage. The next frontier of video game development is the virtual one, and research about the impact of violence in Virtual Realiy (VR) has started to gear up (if Dr. Chris Ferguson of Episode 10 is any indication). This week JD continues the conversation about violence in video games by chatting about violence and VR with Gijs Molsbergen, a virtual reality gamer with experience developing an award winning VR experience. Gijs is a VR advocate, and has been awed and inspired by the experience and potential of virtual reality for quite a while. But loving something also means acknowledging how powerful it can be, and Gijs admits there could be some unintended negative effects of VR if developers and VR advocates don’t take their role as VR ambassadors seriously. While Gijs thinks violence in VR is extremely unlikely to cause acts of violence in real life, there is the potential for virtual reality to be traumatic for folks who aren’t fully prepared for just how real VR can feel. Gijs has some suggestions to help make the mental transition from physical to virtual a good one, from physical grounding techniques and proper mental preparation, to thinking ahead about designing experiences that mitigate the effects of harassment in virtual spaces. The episode culminates with Gijs talking about his work with the National Video Game Museum in the Netherlands (opening October 2017), which will include a Virtual Reality exhibit and game research lab. Gaming Broad(ly) field trip to the Netherlands, anyone? This episode is part three in Gaming Broad(ly)'s series on violence and video games. For the full conversation, start with “Episode 10: Moral Combat—Why the War on Violent Video Games is Wrong” with researchers Chris Ferguson and Patrick Markey on the (lack of) data about video games causing real life acts of violence, followed by “Episode 11: Why Are You So Angry?”, with Ian Danskin of Innuendo Studios, to learn more about why folks get so, well, aggressive about making sure games stay violent. Gijs Molsbergen is a Virtual Reality gamer and content marketing consultant in the Netherlands, with experience developing an award winning VR experience. What a feeling of awesomeness the National Video Game Museum was in Frisco, TX. We talk mainly about the museum, the exhibits, and the high and lows from the largest giant pong console I've ever seen to waiting a hour and a half to get in.
