Mel kicks things off with the glorious screwball comedy My Man Godfrey (1936), starring William Powell and Carole Lombard – a wonderfully sharp, funny tale of the idle rich, an unexpected butler and a family with rather more money than sense. Scott heads into altogether more sobering waters with A Night to Remember (1958), Roy Ward Baker's superbly restrained account of the sinking of the Titanic. Still one of the finest British disaster films ever made, and proof that sometimes understatement can be far more powerful than spectacle. Gareth, meanwhile, has clearly been spending too much time near the shoreline and brings us Behemoth the Sea Monster (1959) – a wonderfully enjoyable slice of British monster-movie mayhem involving radiation, destruction and a very large creature making a terrible nuisance of itself. And Sarah ventures down into The Cellar Club with Caroline Munro, choosing the first two films in its latest season: Hammer's gloriously strange Dr Jekyll & Sister Hyde (1971) and Michael Powell's disturbing, controversial and now rightly celebrated Peeping Tom (1960). Expect the usual mixture of recommendations, memories, trivia, disagreements, diversions and affectionate appreciation of the films that make Talking Pictures TV such an essential destination for lovers of classic cinema. The only films that opened bigger this year are Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Jon Bernthal filmed the Trojan Horse sequence submerged in cold water, Nolan offered to pull him out, and Bernthal's response was essentially: try harder. The film has no real competition until Spider-Man on July 31, which gives it room to run on a $250 million budget that needs the legs.And then — the Avengers: Doomsday trailer dropped this morning. First proper look at Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. Thor rallying heroes, closing with "we need a miracle" before turning around stunned at a "hey pal." Channing Tatum as Gambit. We return to Wizards of the Coast's Villainous Options, now revised after the first round was lovingly pushed down the stairs by public feedback. Some subclasses survived untouched. Some got a makeover. Some were taken behind the shed, especially the Primordial Patron, which had one great idea and the mechanical confidence of a wet napkin. Good news, though: the demon sorcerer finally feels demonic, the Titan Druid is now a proper kaiju tank, and the Hell Knight has upgraded from flaming disappointment to legally playable infernal gambling problem. Hey Scummers!This week Spamuel and Nathan continue their tour through the Dramatis Personae of House Goliath, taking a look at four more walking mountains of muscle whose solution to virtually every problem is "hit it harder."First up is Attilus the Axe, a legendary Goliath whose reputation was built one swing at a time. Equal parts executioner and demolition crew, Attilus proves that subtlety is a concept best left to the Van Saar. If there's an obstacle in front of him, chances are it won't be there for much longeronce they meet The God Cleaver.Next comes Durgan Kill Fist, because apparently House Goliath has a strict naming convention that requires every champion to sound like they lost a fight with a thesaurus. Durgan is another monstrous bruiser whose preferred negotiating tactic is introducing his fist to whatever unfortunate soul happens to be standing nearby. Peace was never really on the table.Then we meet Gorshiv Hammerfist, another champion whose name somehow manages to describe both his personality and his preferred method of conflict resolution. This monstrous Stimmer leads a crew of GOliath so brutal, even his brothers and sisters fear gaining their attention.Finally, we examine Axon Hammer, proving once again that if you survive long enough in House Goliath, you either become a legend or a cautionary tale. Built like a cargo hauler and just as graceful, Axon rounds out an episode dedicated to the biggest slabs of vat-grown beef the Underhive has to offer. From atop his custom Ridgehauler, The Behemoth, Axon wages war on any unlucky enough to get caught on the roads of the wastes.Of course, this wouldn't be an episode of The Underhive Lorekeepers without a few derails. Spamuel attempts to perform slam poetry, somehow butchering both poetry and slamming in the process. Nathan, meanwhile, spends the rest of the episode reminding everyone that he is, in fact, the funny one on the podcast—a claim that may or may not survive the edit. The lads discuss their ideal spending when winning the lottery and because it's impossible to discuss Goliaths without descending into gym humour, the episode becomes dangerously overloaded with bodybuilding double entendres. A VISION of Noah was inserted into the Book of 1 Enoch, with interesting references to Leviathan and Behemoth. These are chaos monsters. Leviathan, described as female and from the sea, and Behemoth, male and occupying the wilderness—possibly the same one into which the Watcher Azazel was thrown as punishment for his role in corrupting humanity. We discussed the “already but not yet” prophecies of 1 Enoch 57–59 and the end times fulfillment of the vision ascribed to Noah in chapter 60. As a reminder, this month's study comes from the Book of Parables, the prophetic section of 1 Enoch written just before the birth of Jesus. The importance of this section of the book is in its prophecies of a coming messianic figure called the Chosen One, the Anointed One, and, most frequently, the Son of Man, a title not found in any prior Jewish writing. Jesus referred to himself as the Son of Man 78 times in the New Testament. The high regard for 1 Enoch held by Jesus, the apostles, and the early church suggests that it's worth our while to study this book for ourselves. It's not in the Bible, nor should it be, but there are teachings in the New Testament that come straight from the book of 1 Enoch.
