Cinematic Sound Radio - Soundtracks, Film, TV and Video Game Music
SOUNDTRACK ALLEY has become THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS! Two years ago this month, host and producer Randy Andrews brought his film music podcast SOUNDTRACK ALLEY to the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST. We've enjoyed the partnership immensely and his show has brought a new dimension to the podcast in the form of long-formed reviews and analyses of soundtracks. However, we felt the need to separate our version of the show from the version that he still produces on his own under the SOUNDTRACK ALLEY moniker. Therefore, all SOUNDTRACK ALLEY episodes produced expressly for CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO will now be known as THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS. The format of the show won't change. It will always remain a deep dive review into some of the best soundtracks of all time… scores that everyone should have in their collections… THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS. On this premiere episode of the newly rebranded THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS, host Randy Andrews and Erik Woods talk about the film and score to the 1984 Nick Castle-directed sci-fi/fantasy/adventure film, THE LAST STARFIGHTER, starring Lance Guest, Robert Preston, Dan O'Herlihy, Catherine Mary Stewart, Norman Snow, and Kay E. Kuter. The film tells the story of Alex Rogan, a teenager recruited by an alien defence force to fight in an interstellar war. Randy and Erik also detail the numerous themes in the score, the recording of the soundtrack, the composition and form of the action material, and the heart behind the music, especially the finale cue "Into The Starscape" The original score for the film was composed by Craig Safan and was recorded by Lyle Burbridge in Los Angeles. The original soundtrack recording was originally released on Southern Cross Records both on CD and LP in 1987. Intrada Records expanded the album both in 1995 and 2015. Earlier this year, Intrada released the definitive release of the score featuring the same program as the 2015 version but with greatly improved sound quality. You can buy that version of the album HERE! Thanks to Jason Drury and Tim Burden for their assistance. And a big thanks to Intrada's own Roger Fiegelson for providing the updated album to play on this show for you. Enjoy the program! John Serpico of ImprovAdvice and True Tales of the Illuminati joins us to talk about commercials related to The Last Starfighter! And a bit more about the movie itself. While researching this movie, we learned that Kay E. Kuter, who played Enduran in The Last Starfighter, was the voice of Hershey’s Kisses for 14 years. So naturally we had to hunt down some kiss commercials! We started in 1984 because that’s when The Last Starfighter came out.“Edna Slips a Kiss” 1984 commercial: This one doesn’t have Kay E. Kuter, but it does show the primary thesis of this 80s campaign, which is that Hershey’s Kisses are signs of affection. And a sad klutzy kid gets a Kiss from his mom in this other commercial from 1984Like the human equivalent of a Pound Puppy. We hope this kid grew up to be okay! Is this you? Are you okay? Let us know!Hershey’s Kisses Christmas bells commercialJohn told us that he heard this is the same ad they use every year, and they pay employees bonuses with the money they save by not making new ones. We finally moved into the 90s and Kay E. Kuter’s run, and watched this 1996 ice skating Kisses commercial. Kay E. Kuter comes in at the very end of this one, and WOW, what a voice! Finally, we watched this sci-fi Almond Kisses commercial, also featuring Kuter. How do almonds get into Kisses? Space Impressment!!!Since our conversation on commercials was so short, we decided to include some deep dive conversation about The Last Starfighter that didn’t quite make it into the main episode. Deleted Scenes, if you will! And then we ended on a bit of a heartwarming note! John thanked us for helping him not hate this movie as much, and we also talked about how great it was that John brought us some delicious sticky buns from Flour, one of Boston’s celebrated bakeries. Then John told us that Chef Chang of Flour actually beat Bobby Flay in a sticky bun throw down! John had to leave at that point since we’d kept him in our clutches for Quite A While, but we hunted down a video of Bobby Flay praising Flour’s sticky buns and watched it on our own. Mmm, sticky buns… Thanks again, John!If you’re having fun listening to us, please tell your friends about us!
