Season Six Debut: Elbows Down on Tariffs, the China Conundrum, and Canada's De Minimis Decisions

The Food Professor

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 28, 2025 41:54

Season Six of The Food Professor Podcast, presented by Caddle, kicks off with hosts Michael LeBlanc and Dr. Sylvain Charlebois diving into a whirlwind of summer news, trade turbulence, and big-picture food industry shifts. This debut episode sets the tone for what promises to be a dynamic and thought-provoking season.Michael and Sylvain begin with personal updates from a busy summer, including travels to Quebec City, Sylvain's new role as Visiting Scholar at McGill University, and Michael's experiences covering retail in New York. They also announce that full video episodes of The Food Professor are now available on YouTube, expanding the show's reach as podcasting and video continue to converge. The discussion quickly pivots to critical economic and policy issues. The hosts unpack Ottawa's decision to end retaliatory countervailing tariffs on U.S. food imports—a move Sylvain argues was long overdue, as tariffs only raised costs for Canadian consumers while doing little to protect domestic industries. With food inflation running hot, Sylvain predicts prices will ease by early fall, pointing to statements from Loblaw CEO Per Bank as validation. From there, the pair explore the elimination of the U.S. “de minimis” exemption, a decision with far-reaching consequences for Canadian small businesses and independent food producers shipping across the border. Michael emphasizes how indie retailers relying on U.S. customers will be hit hardest, while Sylvain warns that Ottawa must address Canada's own $150 threshold to avoid worsening inequities. The conversation expands globally with a deep dive into China's escalating tariffs on Canadian canola, pork, and lobster—measures Sylvain interprets as retaliation for Canada's 100% tariff on Chinese EVs. He makes the case for a more nuanced approach: segment tariffs between luxury and affordable EVs, allowing consumers greater choice while protecting farmers from geopolitical fallout.Other highlights include an analysis of the pickle aisle—yes, really—where the Bick's withdrawal from Canada illustrates the tangled realities of cross-border food supply chains. The hosts also discuss Dr Pepper Keurig's acquisition of JDE Peet's, situating it within a larger trend of consumer packaged goods giants restructuring in response to inflation, climate change, GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, and a rewiring of global trade flows. The episode wraps on a lighter note, celebrating the Canadian arrival of Bobby Flay's Burger concept and teasing next week's guest, Globe and Mail journalist Greg Mercer, author of The Lobster Trap. With sharp analysis, lively banter, and a keen eye on the forces reshaping food and retail, Michael and Sylvain set the stage for a season that will track how consumers, farmers, and retailers navigate inflation, trade disputes, shifting supply chains, and new food trends. Justin Timberlake BioSnap a weekly updated Biography.Justin Timberlake remains in the global spotlight this week, making headlines for both exhilarating performances and behind-the-scenes drama. Fresh off headlining Lollapalooza Paris on July 20, Timberlake's name was trending across social media and entertainment outlets as fans and critics alike dissected his high-energy set and career longevity, with the tour's extension reflecting sustained demand and introspection about his musical evolution, according to Mabumbe. His Instagram post thanking Paris and referencing “the greatest” further fueled speculation about which artists or influences he was alluding to, a classic Timberlake move that keeps his fanbase buzzing.Just days earlier, Romania Insider announced Timberlake's upcoming debut at Electric Castle 2025, set for July 16-20 at Bánffy Castle near Cluj-Napoca, marking his first-ever show in Romania and promising a set list spanning his entire catalog. Festival organizers are billing this as an “illustrious career journey,” teasing performances of both classic hits and fresh tracks off his latest album Everything I Thought It Was, stoking considerable excitement in Eastern Europe. But it's not all smooth sailing for the pop superstar. On July 16, fans at England's Lytham Festival witnessed a very human moment as Timberlake, reportedly frustrated by severe sound issues, was captured on video “raging” at his crew. Parade and Kiss 95.1 confirm that the audio cut out mid-performance during his infamous breakup anthem Cry Me a River, prompting Timberlake to yell and gesture angrily at stage staff—behavior some critics labeled unprofessional, while defenders called it understandable in the heat of live performance. The TikTok video went viral, sparking debate on X about his professionalism and even touching off speculation about cosmic justice given the song's rumored connections to Britney Spears.Amid the touring, Timberlake has also quietly closed a major business chapter. GolfWRX reveals he sold his Mirimichi Golf Course in Memphis for $500,000, a massive loss considering his group's $16 million in renovations since their 2007 purchase. While this was a financial flop, the move is seen by some as partly philanthropic, benefiting Memphis's local economy and golf community.Adding a hint of Broadway buzz, Food Network's Bobby Flay told The Tonight Show he's eager to recruit Timberlake as the lead for an upcoming Beat Bobby Flay musical, playfully noting Timberlake “hasn't won a Tony yet” and suggesting the performer could shine on the New York stage—though this remains pure wishful thinking from Flay for now. Finally, Timberlake's upcoming show in Tbilisi, Georgia, is generating political heat, as OCCRP details a petition urging him to speak out against the country's alleged government crackdowns. Over 2000 Georgian fans and activists have signed the appeal, insisting Timberlake should not allow his concert to be used as de facto propaganda by the ruling party. Timberlake himself has yet to publicly respond. All told, these past few days have underscored Timberlake's enduring star power, the growing complexity around celebrity activism, and his capacity to capture the world's attention both on and off stage.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOta

This week on Second Helpings, Jackie and MJ are joined by the one and only Kara Klenk to goss' 'bout the lack of new episodes of TLC's 'Polyfamily' TV series, since that's what Jackie was gonna watch while taking ABBATH. But since she couldn't, she started TLC's new show 'Virgins' and bathed in her own tears. That slides into talk about the new teaser trailer for the Jeremy Allen White Bruce Springsteen pic comin' out, as well as chat about who is the current generations Bruce, and talk 'bout Bobby Flay and his tribune to the too young passed Anne Burrell. A new season of 'THE BEAR' droppin' soon solidifying it's gonna be another Jeremy Allen White summer, and Kara proudly announces she's not into rat bois! 'The Traitors' Season 4 cast has been revealed, and sadly the New York and Mary from Real Housewives leak was REAL FAKE, instead it's the Kelce bros warning 'bout mama Kelce, so here's hopin' for crop tops, daisy dukes, and beer bongs! Kara gets to have her Rain Man moment and show she's an excellent watcher of Real Housewives, there's now pizza vodka, and Gwen Stefani is promoting dangerous cooking habits all in the name of CONTENT so NO FOOD IS SAFE! Then a SECOND JACKIES SNCAKIES THIS WEEK (that starts at 1:05:22.576) thanks to a very generous listener while MJ continues to torture his colon via hot chip at 1:10:06.542 before it's time to get some PICKLE FISH to end Jackie's Snackie's at 1:16:57.916, all that and more on this week's Second Helpings!ALSO! Now they are asking the public to look into their closets and storage bins in case, you know, you forgot you had a priceless piece of movie history. Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune are finally getting their rightul place on next day streamers. Who knew that you had to watch them on linear TV? Thomas Keller on Cooking as a Pathway to Happiness

With one small, clever—and now-trademark—idea in 1990, the chef Thomas Keller turned not only the notion of the ice-cream cone on its head, but the fine-dining world, too. Now, 35 years later, his hospitality group comprises 10 restaurants, including The French Laundry in Yountville, California, and Per Se in New York City—both of them three-Michelin-starred—as well as Bouchon Bistro and Bouchon Bakery in Las Vegas and The Surf Club Restaurant in Miami. Across his entire hospitality operation, a highly refined, expertly tuned set of standards feeds his “one-guest-at-a-time” philosophy and culture. In many respects, Keller was at the forefront of a local-focused cooking movement. He was also a pioneer in making fine dining more relaxed and approachable—and decidedly less fussy. The food world today would not be the same were it not for his wide-spanning influence. On the episode, Keller reflects on how it took two decades of failing and learning from mistakes before at last, in 1994, he opened The French Laundry, which instantly received rave reviews and remains one of the most celebrated restaurants in the world. He also discusses his recent Chef's Table episode on Netflix and his cameo on the FX show The Bear, memory-making as a key part of his operation, and why persistence is the greatest form of pleasure.Special thanks to our Season 11 presenting sponsor, Van Cleef & Arpels.Show notes:Thomas Keller[4:57] “Chef's Table: Legends” (2025)[4:57] The French Laundry[4:57] Per Se[7:24] Grant Achatz[7:24] Bobby Flay[7:24] Tom Colicchio[7:24] Emeril Lagasse[7:24] Le Pavillon[10:13] “The Bear”: Season 3, Episode 10 (2024)[10:13] Christopher Storer[10:13] “Sense of Urgency” (2013)[10:13] Hans Zimmer[10:13] Bouchon Bistro[10:13] “Thomas Keller's Roasted Chicken” (2020)[17:26] “Chef Thomas Keller on Finding Professional Success After 40” (2022)[23:55] “The French Laundry Cookbook” (1999)[25:57] Daniel Boulud[28:24] Graham Kerr[28:24] “The Galloping Gourmet” (1968)[32:27] Roland Henin[33:47] Florence Fabricant[33:47] “Food; Flights of Fancy” (1988)[33:47] “Checkers Has Lost Its Chef” (1992)[38:08] “Sally Schmitt, Trend-Setting Restaurateur, Is Dead at 90”[40:12] The French Laundry Kitchen[40:12] Snøhetta[40:12] “Thomas Keller, an Exacting Chef at a Crossroads”[48:47] “The Reach of a Restaurant” TED Talk[48:47] “The French Laundry, Per Se” (2020)
