Jake leads us through a tribute to physical media! Memories of VHS horror box art! The heyday and resurgence of vinyl! The reliance (and obligation) of giving books as gifts! We cover it all and also share some stories from our listeners about the tangible, physical stuff that made them who they are. If you're old you can remember how it was with us and if you're young you can hear about the pure joy of going over to a friend's house and seeing that they also had a DVD copy of Stargate! What Happens When We Stop Learning? Why Education Isn't Just for Kids - Episode 472

What if education isn't something we finish—but something we practice for the rest of our lives? In Episode 472 of Friends Talking Nerdy, The Reverend Tracy joins Tim the Nerd for an engaging conversation about the true purpose of education and why its impact extends far beyond the classroom. Kicking off Education Month, they explore how learning influences not only individual success, but also healthier communities, stronger civic engagement, better mental health, and a more informed society. The discussion begins by challenging the common assumption that education is primarily for children. Instead, Tim The Nerd and The Reverend Tracy argue that lifelong learning is one of the most powerful tools we have for personal growth and community well-being. From developing new skills later in life to embracing curiosity as a daily habit, they explain how education continues to shape our lives long after graduation.Drawing on research into neuroplasticity, they examine the brain's remarkable ability to adapt and grow throughout life. They discuss why learning new languages, exploring unfamiliar ideas, and engaging with different perspectives literally changes how we think, reinforcing the idea that growth is always possible regardless of age.The conversation also tackles one of today's greatest challenges: navigating an overwhelming flood of information. Tim The Nerd and The Reverend Tracy discuss why media literacy has become just as essential as reading literacy, how social media algorithms can create echo chambers, and why critical thinking is more important than ever in distinguishing credible information from misinformation. They explain why scientific understanding evolves over time, why changing recommendations are a sign of progress rather than failure, and how intellectual humility allows us to continue learning instead of becoming trapped by certainty.Throughout the episode, they emphasize that education isn't simply about collecting facts—it's about developing empathy, understanding different perspectives, and building communities capable of solving complex problems together. Whether through literature, science, meaningful conversations, or everyday curiosity, learning expands our worldview and strengthens our ability to connect with others. If you've ever wondered how education shapes not just careers but communities, why curiosity is a lifelong skill, or how better thinking leads to a healthier society, this episode offers an insightful and inspiring discussion that reminds us learning never truly ends.Support Friends Talking Nerdy on Patreon. As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song. This week on BWN, Patrick returns from vacation just in time for a huge week in the Nerdosphere! The trailer park, compared to a week ago, is very light, as the Nerds discuss trailers for the very strange Wicker and Jumanji: Open World. From there, the guys get caught up with X-Men '97 as they review episodes 5 through 7 of Season 2. With everything from Wolverine getting his adamantium back to Polaris rejoining the team to an impending clash with a deadly version of one of the most popular X-Men, the series continues to impress with its depth and storytelling. There is also a lot of News around the Nerdosphere, including a change of plans for the Booster Gold series, a confirmation that the Blade movie is truly dead, and a disappointing about-face for Wonderman as Season 2 was abruptly canceled, raising some real questions about how Marvel is handling their black actor issue. But, we close up shop this week by reviewing Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Despite the entire movie being leaked online (repeatedly), the latest movie about everyone's favorite wall-crawler was poised to have the second biggest opening box office ever, behind only Avengers: Endgame. The Nerds offer up their thoughts about the movie and answer the burning question: Is this the best Spider-Man movie ever? @WrestlngRealistwww.attitudeofaggression.com@PCTunney@itsmedpp@ViolentAesop@TheMindlessPod@therealcplatt@IWCWarChief@ChairshotMedia@BandwagonNerdsPROWRESTLINGTEES.COM/TheChairshot - Makes a GREAT GIFT!!!About Bandwagon NerdsJoin Patrick O'Dowd, David Ungar, PC Tunney, and DPP as they keep everyone up on all things nerd and maybe add some new nerds along the way. This Week on the Toy Power Podcast; even though we are Celebrating our 10th Year of Podcasting; we unfortunately exhausted all our energy on the Previous SDCC Reveals & Announcements Ep. So we are giving you a ReIssue episode instead from the Vault. (Originally Posted as Ep #143 - from October 2019). Original blurb: It’s a very special ep as we’re joined by not one, but two of favourite guests in Davey Damaged and Scotty so that’s right – it’s a Homer episode! Trent takes us through a vintage retrospective look at The Addams family by Playmates. Perfectly timed for Halloween, we wonder what could have been with this short-lived line and look to the future of the franchise as a new movie approaches. What characters didn’t get made, which ones make the camera glow and where does MC Hammer fit into it all? We make the jump to Show and Tell as Davey tries to trump us all with a purchase so large, we doubt it will actually fit in his toy room! There’s some DC, MOTU and even Final Fantasy options to choose from. Frank gives a lovely tribute showing that sometimes, the value of a toy; lays in more than its sticker price. Then it’s Quiz time and with Davey onboard, anything is possible. To say this episode goes off the rails is putting it mildly – but on the plus side we learnt that Trent can’t hold his liquor, Ben thinks photos record sound, Space Jam was an event and Rick Moranis is Trent’s muse. So hold on for this crazy ride that also serves as a farewell for one of the team…Support the show: http://patreon.com/toypowerpodcastSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Yet they can profoundly shape who we are, how we see the world, and how we connect with others. In this very special episode of Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd welcome Milly Morrow, MSW, M.Div., for a thoughtful and deeply compassionate conversation about moral injury—a concept that is gaining recognition for its profound impact on mental health, identity, relationships, and community.Moral injury occurs when a person experiences, witnesses, or participates in events that violate their deeply held moral beliefs or values. While it is often discussed alongside Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Milly explains why moral injury is a distinct experience, rooted not simply in fear or trauma, but in questions of meaning, betrayal, responsibility, and the struggle to reconcile what has happened with one's sense of self.Drawing from her extensive background in clinical social work, community-based care, pastoral ministry, and Internal Family Systems (IFS), Milly shares how grief, spirituality, trauma, and moral frameworks intersect in the healing process. She offers insights into why moral injury can affect anyone—not just military veterans—including healthcare professionals, first responders, educators, clergy, caregivers, community leaders, and anyone who has carried the weight of impossible decisions or witnessed profound injustice.Throughout the conversation, Professor Aubrey, Tim The Nerd, and Milly explore how shame differs from moral injury, why healing cannot happen in isolation, and how supportive communities play an essential role in helping people rediscover hope, purpose, and connection. Rather than asking people to "move on" from suffering, Milly encourages a different approach: making meaning from difficult experiences while honoring the values and relationships that continue to shape our lives. Our guest, Milly Morrow, MSW, M.Div., specializes in community-centered care for those who care for others. Her work supports individuals, families, caregivers, educators, healthcare professionals, clergy, frontline workers, and community leaders navigating grief and moral injury at the complex intersection of spirituality and mental health. With a trauma-informed, strengths-based approach, Milly is passionate about helping people integrate life's most difficult experiences while reconnecting with purpose, resilience, and authentic community. As Milly reminds us throughout this conversation:"Change is inevitable. Transformation is a choice. The choice to let suffering and change transform you requires connection, community, and deep courage. You do not have to do it alone."If this conversation resonates with you, please consider sharing it with someone who may benefit from hearing it. Conversations like these remind us that healing is rarely a solitary journey—and that understanding one another is often the first step toward hope.Support Friends Talking Nerdy on Patreon. As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song. We started late and had a set cutoff time, so we stayed on topic, right?  Sigh. Yeah, you all know us better than that. Lots of questions about a strip club-brewery combo and what beers they might have on tap. We read Google reviews about said strip club. We gave a funeral send off to the Craft Parenting Podcast. Then almost 25 minute in...we finally get to talking about the past week's content. Kinda. TWP was full of rum. Drinking what's possibly British Royal Naval rum. Lake life not being complete without buckets of rum with Nerds sludge. Dispelling for the millionth time the outcry of seasonal creep. Gnome struck fear into his viewer's hearts by drinking out of a can. Moonshine is an RTD, not to be confused with an STD. There were some cool labels on the screen, and who's responsible for continuing the education of beer styles. The Cincy Brew Dads made it to Paradise! Contact Matt if you need your hairs did, he is now an expert at updos. How Paradise went from a TV repair shop to a brewery and taproom, including how they managed to get free labor out of their patrons in exchange for Christmas beers in July. The mood darkened dramatically when a difference in opinion about Belgia was exposed.  Bret was stuck in Nutty Putty cave so Mike had to handle Barstool Perspective on his own. He bemoaned false Caesar salads. Tilray continues to tank so we all get refunds, right??? He parlayed with pieces about upcoming court cases concerning home distilling and planes being confiscated for smuggled 6-packs. He listed yet another thing he hates, and he doesn't understand user submitted questions. 2026 Show Notes Addendum   Our last chance to share this particular rerun on the anniversary of its release, we present to you - Chandlerfest: our only rerun ever to be so completely retooled. If we're being honest, this broadcast was so heavily amended that it should never have been categorized as a "rerun" episode, but as a Ch F "F-isode" - a thought that's been weighing on me since working on the Channel F finale and not having it appear, the rerun itself only comprises about 45 minutes of the nearly 2.5hr broadcast celebrating the life and music of St. Jodee and I's dear friend Chris on the occasion of what would've been his then 40th [now 47th] birthday. I felt it appropriate to share this one today. If you've already heard it, I hope you will enjoy this trip through the music of this singular individual. And if it's your first time hearing it, then I hope you will explore the man's back catalog even further. Lastly, the original show notes below reference a companion blogspot post with expanded content. Here's the link: https://nerdnoiseradio.blogspot.com/2019/07/nerd-noise-radio-reruns-presents.html   ----------------------   Original Show Notes:   ----------------------   Buried somewhere around the middle of this 2hr, 22min long, profoundly bittersweet, and deeply emotional tribute to my dear friend Chris Chandler on the occasion of what would've been his 40th birthday is a complete, and unmodified rerun of Nerd Noise Radio C1E10 (originally broadcast 05/22/2017) - which itself was originally intended as a tribute to Chris. The music block portion of C1E10 was produced on the day of his passing, 12/28/2016.   Technically, today's production is categorized as a rerun. But only 47 minutes of this 2hrs, 22mins are actually the rerun itself. The rest is a fresh production, brand new, and all dedicated to Chris. Come, hear his music, hear his story, and hear our hearts. Get acquainted with the man who meant so much to all of us, and whose passing still reverberates through our lives these more than 2 1/2 years later. Learn how data centers could be raising your utility bills. Plus: how to use a sinking fund strategy to pay your bills. What does it actually cost your community when a hyperscale AI data center moves in nearby? Senior news writer Anna Helhoski joins host Sean Pyles, CFP®, to break down the growing national backlash against data centers. They discuss what costs communities are left to shoulder — from unexpected spikes in electricity bills to strained water supplies and persistent noise pollution — and why the economic benefits towns were promised may not measure up to what residents end up paying. Once your savings buckets are set up, how do you actually pay your bills without the whole system falling apart? Sean and his fellow host Elizabeth Ayoola tackle listener questions about the most overlooked piece of the sinking fund strategy: managing payments across multiple accounts. They dig into why putting everything on one credit card can become a bookkeeping headache, what it means if you keep pulling from one bucket to cover another, and how your rewards card strategy could actually be working against your savings goals. This week, Alex and Beck make excuses; speak out of their rear ends; contemplate "two for twice the price"; share the joys of a race track at dawn; decide whether drag racing is an "event phenomenon"; think screaming matches are the best part of F1, which has a multitude of non-best parts; drop some dated (and sadly inaccurate) LeBron theory; and opine on the true marker of middle age. They then embark on an extended conversation about sub-professional sports teams, ruminate on the news from Goodwood, discover the potential benefits of wearing BaT gear in public, talk about what constitutes rarity (with, admittedly, some stretching of numbers to make a point), go boar hunting with machine guns, train a wunderkind to be an insufferable car nerd, and, naturally, discuss their favorite license plates.Follow along! By making smart exercise substitutions, prioritizing recovery through sleep and nutrition, and seeking medical guidance, you can continue making progress while giving your body the best opportunity to heal. Read along with the original article(s) here: https://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/injuries/ Quotes to ponder: "When you get injured, start thinking outside of the box to find the opportunity in the obstacle." "So instead, try to look at an injury as an opportunity for you to focus on a weakness. Strengthen your weaknesses, become more well rounded and better equipped to deal with rigorous activity." "Start slow, start light, and back off the second you feel any pain." Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
