Zo visits some old friends at a trailer park. It seems like a normal place with kids running amok, teenagers fooling around and senior citizens looking for someone to fix their TV's so that they can watch their soap operas. Alex is just the guy the guy that they need: a recent high school graduate who is this neighborhood's handyman. Zo noticed that Alex is also fantastic at the Starfighter videogame. Zo had tried the game himself and isn't really good at it, but Alex is a genuine prodigy. Unfortunately, there's not much that anyone can do with the skills of "Best Videogame Player" in the mid 1980's. It's not like you can play this Starfighter game to train to pilot an actual spaceship right? . . . Right? The Fork In Your Ear Ep#211 Natepril Fools - Podcast Description Summary (April 4, 2026 Recording) In this episode of the Fork in Your Ear Podcast, hosts Tim K. Trotter and Nate (the "nape profile" and self-proclaimed master of puns and dad jokes) catch up after some technical hiccups and a holiday-related scheduling shift. They kick things off with a light-hearted roast of their absent Discord friend "Dame," who recently became a dad (congrats!) but kept it quiet, then nerd out over his rediscovered 90s Pokémon Gold/Silver BradyGames guidebook. Xbox Developer Preview Highlights The bulk of the conversation dives into the recent Xbox Partner Preview event. Nate walks through the announced titles (mostly in alphabetical order), with Tim chiming in on what catches his eye: Alien: Descent Storm – Atmospheric first-person survival shooter on Mars. Artificial Detective – Kitschy post-apocalyptic robot detective game with stylish storytelling. Send to Zero – Isometric pixel-art action game that reminds Tim of classic Final Fantasy aesthetics but sparks his mixed feelings on isometric perspectives (he prefers top-down; blames Sonic 3D Blast trauma). Happy Snaps – Basically Pokémon Snap but in the Bluey universe (Nate's kids will love it; lots of wholesome family talk and mild commentary on the IP being milked). Dispatch – The full collection is finally coming to Xbox (Play Anywhere, cloud, Series X/S). Tim highlights that the game has already sold 5 million copies pre-Xbox release—outpacing many big Sony titles. The Eternal Life of Oldman – Hand-drawn side-scroller where you play as an old man fixing/upgrading with his cane; Tim and Nate both vibe with the "games for us old guys" theme. The Expanse: Born from Cyberspace – Mass Effect-style RPG set in the beloved Expanse universe. Nate is hyped; they debate whether it's canon to the books/show. Forever Ago – Narrative adventure about an old man unlocking life memories (another "old guy game"). Frog Squad – Chaotic co-op puzzle game with frogs using tongues (reminds Tim of Chameleon Twist); looks like family fun despite the dated graphics. Grave Seasons – Farming sim with a dark/terrifying twist (Jessica would love it, per Tim). Hades II – Coming to Xbox; Tim shouts out Supergiant Games. Hunter: The Reckoning – Death Wish – First-person shooter take on the classic co-op gauntlet-style series. Moosa: Dirty Fate – Feudal Japan-inspired dark action game with bloody executions. Serious Sam – New 5-player co-op shooter from Behavior Interactive; Tim calls it "turn your brain off and shoot" in a good way. Stalker 2: Cost of Hope DLC – More content for the Ukrainian-developed series. Stranger Than Heaven – Brawler-style game from RGG Studio (Yakuza/Like a Dragon team?); graphics feel dated. Super Meat Boy 3D – Already out, but early feedback is disappointing (sloppy controls, no involvement from original creator Edmund McMillen). Vanted – Tactical RPG with explosive turn-based/real-time combat and Team Fortress-y art. Wuthering Waves – Coming to Xbox/Game Pass; Tim describes it as "Genshin Impact but more sci-fi, with Pokémon elements and better gameplay." They note the heavy presence of narrative-driven, story-focused, or "inclusive for older gamers" titles, which both hosts appreciate. What They've Been Playing Nate: Jumped into the recommended twin-stick Zelda-like Mini Shoot Adventures on Tim's suggestion. He's beaten the first dungeon boss, done ship upgrades, and shares Tim's minor complaint about missing dungeon maps, though it doesn't bother him as much. Loves the smooth controls, auto-shoot option, and forgiving fail states. Also tried a bit of ARK: Survival Ascended with the kids (dinosaurs!) but found the tutorial/missions frustrating and deadly. Tim: Finished Mini Shoot Adventures (highly recommends it). Played Life is Strange: Double Exposure with his wife—enjoyed the story, music, and choices but found the ending lackluster. They're looking forward to the new sequel Life is Strange: Reunion. Struggled heavily with ARK (wires quest saga involving drones, rockets, crashes, and rage-quits). Mentioned idle grinding in Exo Miner hitting brutal late-game walls. Entertainment & Culture Deaths: James Tolkan (Principal Strickland from Back to the Future, also in Top Gun) at 94, and animator Barry Caldwell (Tiny Toons, Smurfs, etc.). Movies: Tim and his wife saw Project Hail Mary in IMAX—loved the adaptation of Andy Weir's book, Ryan Gosling's performance, and the impressive practical puppet work (especially the alien). Highly recommended for space fans. Super Mario Galaxy Movie 2: Tim went opening night. Lots of Nintendo cameos (including Star Fox voiced by Glen Powell), stunning animation and score, but criticized as overstuffed, fast-paced dopamine overload with thin character development and a chaotic plot. Fun for Nintendo fans as a "Super Nintendo World: The Movie" experience, but not a strong standalone film. Yoshi's backstory montage is a highlight; Donald Glover does the voice. Other: Tim watched Mercy (Chris Pratt + AI judge system) and re-watched Minority Report. Nate had a nostalgia kick with 80s films like D.A.R.Y.L. and The Last Starfighter (which he thinks needs a modern remake). They're watching Invincible Season 4—Tim calls Episode 5 one of the darkest, most disturbing things he's seen in animation. Life Stories Nate got his Tony Hawk skateboard delivered by an Amazon driver… who arrived on a skateboard himself (Tim and Nate both found this hilarious and practical). Tim's mom is back living with him after time in Florida—some minor household adjustments and "special mug" incidents. Work stress is high with big out-of-state jobs, parts delays, and travel anxiety (food allergies add extra layers). Nate's wife is stressed finishing the school yearbook; end-of-month work crunch for him too. General adulting chaos: kids, house, motorcycle service, etc. Podcast note: A long-time coworker finally discovered the show and gave audio volume feedback (services sometimes re-encode files lower). Tim fixed some broken links (RIP old Stitcher) and reminded listeners where to find the show (Apple, Spotify, YouTube, direct RSS). Technology Apple planning to add search ads to Maps (Nate and Tim not thrilled; fear of nickel-and-diming premium users). OpenAI in rough shape: burning ~$18M/day, Sora video platform shutting down, Disney exiting a $1B deal, potential IPO struggles, and scientific concerns about ChatGPT encouraging psychosis via constant affirmation. Micron RAM issues tied to OpenAI orders also impacted broader memory pricing. Anthropic's Claude AI had source code accidentally exposed in an update, leading to community "Claw Code" recreations. Artemis II successfully launched (despite April Fools timing causing momentary panic online). Crew is en route for a lunar flyby; they're using iPhone 17 Pros (first time an iPhone model is officially space-rated). Cool Earth photos and real-time mission updates shared. The episode is classic Fork in Your Ear: relaxed banter, deep game talk, honest opinions on media, relatable life gripes, and a mix of excitement and skepticism about tech/AI/space progress. Tim and Nate keep it real, funny, and grounded while covering a wide range of nerdy topics. Runtime vibe: Casual morning recording with occasional kid interruptions, tech troubleshooting, and plenty of laughs. Video game movies are bigger than ever! But do you know what used to be bigger than video game movies? Movies about video games that aren't based on a real video game. We're taking a look at four starting with 1984's The Last Starfighter, on the surface a blatent Star Wars knock off (which it is) but a cut above all the other Star Wars crossovers. Long before he was codifying the industry in the VES Handbook, Jeff was a kid in Los Angeles pouring ketchup on his friends to stage fake street fights for a hidden camera. His journey into the heart of cinema began under the mentorship of graphic design icon Saul Bass, where he learned that pushing the right buttons could lead to miraculous results. This foundation in precision and storytelling propelled him from a midnight gopher to the primary "fix-it guy" for landmark projects like The Last Starfighter and Stargate, ultimately leading to his pivotal role in founding the Visual Effects Society Awards. Beyond the technical wizardry and stories of killing Samuel L. Jackson on screen, Jeff offers a raw look at the systemic struggles within the visual effects industry. He explores the "kerfuffle" of 2013, the complexities of global unionization, and the rising tide of AI in the creative process. By advocating for a heist mentality where every shot is planned with surgical precision before a single frame is captured, he provides a roadmap for a more sustainable and respected future for artists in a "fix it in post" world. Jon and I are back after a brief hiatus, and we had a lot to catch up on, starting with our ever-evolving audio gear! I tested out a new budget microphone, the Boya Measureless, which I'm using in a shotgun mode on a tripod. Jon is actually using the same mic in lavalier format. It's a pretty advanced 4-in-1 mic that even comes with its own charging case and windscreens. I'm glad it's working out for both of us! Shifting gears, I needed some help rationalizing a recent purchase: the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE. It was a good bundle from Costco, including the S Pen (which uses Wacom EMR technology) and a nice magnetic keyboard case, all for around $500. I was looking for a replacement for my Pixel tablet, which Google is apparently not going to continue developing. I like that the S10 FE is IP68 water and dustproof, has a micro SD slot (I added a 256GB card for 384GB total storage!), and supports both Face ID and fingerprint login. I'm even learning how to use Samsung's additional windowing system on top of the standard Android UI. We discussed the rumor of a budget MacBook (codenamed J700) possibly coming out in 2026 with the iPhone's A18 Pro processor. I think it would be fantastic in the $499 range, especially for schools and people new to desktop operating systems. We also touched on the mind-blowing news that an AI-written song hit number one on the Billboard country music chart. I remember being wowed by the first all-CGI movie, The Last Starfighter, back in the '80s, and it feels like AI music is on a similar path to becoming normal. Jon then walked me through a cool, old trick for Google Sheets: using the Google Visualization API with a SQL query embedded in a URL to fetch specific data, which he uses for his weekly jokes. Finally, Jon demoed Open Broadcast Studio (OBS), which is a free, versatile tool for broadcasting and recording, offering commercial-level features for mixing audio and video sources.

Roxy Striar and Tara Erickson dive into Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982), the most unique and divisive entry in John Carpenter's legendary slasher franchise. Directed by Tommy Lee Wallace (It, Fright Night Part 2), this film famously departs from the Michael Myers storyline and instead delivers a chilling standalone tale centered on the sinister Silver Shamrock mask company. The movie stars Tom Atkins (The Fog, Night of the Creeps) as Dr. Dan Challis, who teams up with Ellie Grimbridge, played by Stacey Nelkin (Bullets Over Broadway), to investigate a horrifying conspiracy. Dan O'Herlihy (RoboCop, The Last Starfighter) gives an unforgettable performance as Conal Cochran, the mastermind behind the masks, whose terrifying Halloween broadcast threatens children everywhere. With its eerie “Silver Shamrock” jingle, disturbing imagery, and shocking ending, Halloween III has become a cult favorite and a cornerstone of horror discussions. Though controversial at release, the film has earned its place in horror history as one of the most daring sequels ever made. From the dawn of time, man has been fascinated by the stars and what — or more importantly, who — is out there. Unsurprisingly, from the dawn of filmmaking, Hollywood has been also been fascinated by visiting (and visitors from) other worlds. One of the earliest silent films, A Trip to the Moon, was about shooting astronauts to the moon (using a cannon) and the alien creatures they find. There are countless movies about aliens and here are four I think you should watch.Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)Roy Neary's life is turned upside-down after having a close encounter with a UFO. After being tormented by visions and a need to know more, Roy meets others experiencing the same thing and travels to Devil's Tower in Wyoming where Roy, the government, and the aliens all arrive for a monumental concert. Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Richard Dreyfuss, Teri Garr, and Melinda Dillion, Close Encounters of the Third Kind is one of the greatest films about alien encounters ever made. A must watch, no matter what planet you're from.Starcrash (1978)Hot on the heels of 1977's Star Wars came a wave of films “influenced” by George Lucas's masterpiece. In Starcrash, a smuggler and her alien sidekick go on a mission to rescue a prince from an evil character with a gigantic space weapon that can destroy planets. Sound familiar? Did I mention the alien sidekick uses a lightsaber? Perhaps “influenced” is too light of a word. Starcrash is not the best space opera of all time, but it's an interesting time capsule from 1978; one of many movies that also took place in a galaxy far, far away. Starcrash features great sets, a goofy plot… and David Hasselhoff. The Last Starfighter (1984)Alex Rogan wants nothing more than to escape his small town and that opportunity presents itself after he beats the world record on an arcade game called The Last Starfighter. The arcade game is actually a recruiting tool, and before long a shifty alien named Centauri arrives to take Alex to space where he will become a Starfighter — for real! Featuring (then) groundbreaking CGI, lots of alien action, and the final theatrical performance of Robert Preston.Naked Space/Spaceship/The Creature Wasn't Nice (1981)No matter what name you see this movie under, they're all the same… and none of them are good! This “horror/comedy” that loosely parodies Alien stars Leslie Nielson, Cindy Williams, Gerrit Graham, Patrick Macnee, and (writer/director) Bruce Kimmel. After exploring a newly discovered planet, the crew of the Spaceship Vertigo bring a small organism (goo) on board that quickly grows into a large monster. When Dr. Stark figures out a way to connect the monster's brain to the ship's computer, they are able for the first time to hear the monster's thoughts. And boy, is that monster hungry…Movies about aliens and outer space are always fun summer viewing. Rent one of these films and pop an extra bucket of popcorn, just in case someone from “out there” stops by to join you. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Kerry and Collin are joined by Catherine Mary Stewart, star of the 1984 cult classic "Night of the Comet," an apocalyptic sci-fi film where the world ends at Christmastime, which is the best time to go shopping. They are also joined by returning guest Marya E. Gates, author of the new book "Cinema Her Way: Visionary Female Directors in Their Own Words." The four of them talk in-depth about "Night of the Comet" while Stewart tells some great production stories from working on the film, while also talking about some of the other Christmas films in which she has appeared. And yes, there is also talk of "The Apple," "Dudes" and "The Last Starfighter." Then, the discussion switches over the to subject of Gates' new book, which examines (among many other things) the continuing struggles in the industry facing some of the best female filmmakers working today. As if that weren't enough, there's also the Blu-ray Gift Exchange. It's a longer episode than usual, but well worth it.  Buy Marya's book here (Bookshop.org supports independent book stores) Learn more about Catherine Mary Stewart's work here. The stories we love often involve teen and younger kids jumping into a mech suit, picking up a lightsaber, or using their superpowers to fight for justice, sometimes quite literally going to war. Yet in our own world, we generally recognize that using children to fight wars or enforce justice through violence is wrong, dangerous, and incredibly harmful. How do we reconcile those two ideas?Riki and Matthew talk about stories like Gundam, Star Wars, Ender's Game, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and The Last Starfighter through the lens of child soldiers. They explore a number of questions including:Why does so much of our media focus on kids jumping into the fight? What are the ethical questions raised by adults marshaling children for war?Is there a difference between adults telling kids to fight, vs. kids who volunteer, often against the express wishes of the adults? Is an 18th birthday a magic line, and all fighting on one side is wrong, but on the other is okay? Are some 16-year-olds better able to handle fighting than other 21-year-olds?Bonus member content on the idea of episodic television shows in Star Wars.  We've started the conversation.
