Kerry and Collin are joined by Catherine Mary Stewart, star of the 1984 cult classic "Night of the Comet," an apocalyptic sci-fi film where the world ends at Christmastime, which is the best time to go shopping. They are also joined by returning guest Marya E. Gates, author of the new book "Cinema Her Way: Visionary Female Directors in Their Own Words." The four of them talk in-depth about "Night of the Comet" while Stewart tells some great production stories from working on the film, while also talking about some of the other Christmas films in which she has appeared. And yes, there is also talk of "The Apple," "Dudes" and "The Last Starfighter." Then, the discussion switches over the to subject of Gates' new book, which examines (among many other things) the continuing struggles in the industry facing some of the best female filmmakers working today. As if that weren't enough, there's also the Blu-ray Gift Exchange. It's a longer episode than usual, but well worth it.  Buy Marya's book here (Bookshop.org supports independent book stores) Learn more about Catherine Mary Stewart's work here. It was very cool to find out more about the film The Last Starfighter. I want to take this opportunity to again thank Catherine Mary Stewart for her contributions to '80s pop culture, especially with her roles in that classic film and, even more, for going back to the '80s for a little while with us here as well.If you have not watched the underrated gem of a movie, rent it now on Amazon Prime and have your children watch it, too. It's a great movie about bravery and exploration – and there's a little bit of a love tale, as well.

The stories we love often involve teen and younger kids jumping into a mech suit, picking up a lightsaber, or using their superpowers to fight for justice, sometimes quite literally going to war. Yet in our own world, we generally recognize that using children to fight wars or enforce justice through violence is wrong, dangerous, and incredibly harmful. How do we reconcile those two ideas?Riki and Matthew talk about stories like Gundam, Star Wars, Ender's Game, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and The Last Starfighter through the lens of child soldiers. They explore a number of questions including:Why does so much of our media focus on kids jumping into the fight? What are the ethical questions raised by adults marshaling children for war?Is there a difference between adults telling kids to fight, vs. kids who volunteer, often against the express wishes of the adults? Is an 18th birthday a magic line, and all fighting on one side is wrong, but on the other is okay? Are some 16-year-olds better able to handle fighting than other 21-year-olds?Bonus member content on the idea of episodic television shows in Star Wars.  We've started the conversation. Beginning in 2015, fans of 1984's "The Last Starfighter" were thrilled when a potential sequel was teased. That excitement was buoyed when “Rogue One” scribe Gary Whitta announced he was working with Jon on the project—and ultimately released concept art for the film in 2021. Sadly, however, those hopes were dashed in September 2022, when Whitta responded to a fan on Twitter, writing, “To be honest there's a decent chance it never happens.” And since then, there have been no updates. On this episode, Will chats with Jonathan Betuel, the writer of "The Last Starfighter," about the origins of the film, his experience with arcade games, and whether a potential sequel is still in the works.00:00 - Introduction06:05 - Interview: Jonathan Betuel42:25 - Wrap-UpSubscribe to our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@1980snowFollow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/1980snow.Become a patron at www.patreon.com/1980snowEmail us at will@1980snow.com or kat@1980snow.com.
