We don't remember much about this movie, other than it takes place right where the original ended. It also takes place in a hospital and Jamie Lee Curtis got a bigger paycheck and basically laid in a hospital bed the entire film. The Last Starfighter (1984)Whitey and Gow, and are back with another deep dive into a classic, and today we're joined by none other than Will the Plumber – our long-time fan and guest host for this episode. In the heart of the 1980s, a time when arcades reigned supreme and science fiction cinema was shaping itself into a formidable genre, Nick Castle's "The Last Starfighter" made its debut. A lesser-known gem compared to its contemporaries, the film crafts a narrative that is as old as storytelling itself – the ordinary individual thrust into extraordinary circumstances. Plot OverviewAlex Rogan (portrayed by Lance Guest) is the quintessential everyman, a teenager bound by the limitations of his trailer park home and the lure of a nearby arcade game. His talent for the game "Starfighter" isn't just a teen's idle pastime; it becomes the golden ticket to a grander universe. The arcade game, unbeknownst to Alex, is a recruiting tool for an extraterrestrial alliance in need of pilots to defend the cosmos. As he navigates this newfound responsibility, the narrative unfolds.Highlights1. Relatable Hero's Journey: At its core, "The Last Starfighter" is a manifestation of the hero's journey, made famous by mythologist Joseph Campbell. Alex's transformation from an arcade champ to a cosmic hero is a timeless tale, making him a character audiences can root for.2. Innovative Visuals: The film made pioneering efforts in computer-generated imagery (CGI). For the first time, audiences witnessed an entire fleet of spaceships, starry dogfights, and alien landscapes brought to life without traditional model-based special effects. The graphical innovation set a precedent for what would become commonplace in future films.3. Supporting Cast: Beyond Guest's lead performance, the film features an ensemble of rich characters. Robert Preston's Centauri, the enigmatic recruiter, and Dan O'Herlihy's Grig, Alex's reptilian co-pilot, add layers of humour and heart to the narrative.Lowlights1. Tropes and Predictability: While the narrative is endearing, it often treads familiar grounds. The elements of the 'chosen one', the unsuspecting hero, and the grand battle against evil, although classic, can feel derivative.2. Aged Visual Effects: Though the film's CGI was groundbreaking in 1984, it has not aged gracefully. Modern audiences accustomed to the technological marvels of today's cinematic universes may find the graphics dated and less immersive.3. Character Depth: Alex Rogan's journey is undoubtedly compelling, but several secondary characters are deprived of a deeper narrative. The film's focus on its protagonist sometimes sidelines the richness that could have been derived from its diverse cast of characters.Cultural Impact and Legacy"The Last Starfighter" presents an interesting blend of Earthly nostalgia and space fantasy. At a time when arcade gaming was emerging as a significant subculture, the film's premise of a game being a gateway to a larger universe was novel. It became a part of the era's zeitgeist that championed the underdog, made evident in films like "Star Wars" and "Back to the Future". The film's synthesis of video gaming culture and sci-fi fantasy is arguably its most enduring legacy. In retrospect, it was ahead of its time, predicting a world where gaming would have ramifications beyond the screen. Today, as we witness the rise of virtual realities and e-sports champions, "The Last Starfighter" feels almost prophetic.ConclusionFor those who grew up in the 80s or those with an affinity for vintage sci-fi, "The Last Starfighter" is a nostalgic ride. It encapsulates a time when stories were unapologetically optimistic, when the ordinary could touch the stars, and when defeating a video game could earn you a place in a galactic battle.Despite its shortcomings and aged CGI, the movie still resonates with its core message – that hidden within the mundane can be the seeds of the extraordinary. It serves as a testament to the timeless allure of the hero's journey and stands as a tribute to an era that dreamt of galaxies far, far away, one arcade game at a time. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew

If you've ever dreamt of being so good at a video game that it leads to your recruitment to defend the Frontier against Xur and the Ko-Dan Armada. Then get in loser! We're going back to 1984 to The Last Starfighter. Luke Skywalker....er....Alex Rogan has been playing Star Wars....er....Starfighter at the farm....er....trailer park for longer than I care to remember. Literally. The Last Starfighter is one of the earliest adopters of cgi in supporting a hefty part of a films aesthetic. And although it's glaringly obvious, there is a certain charm in the fact that the cgi generated universe resembles an actual video game. Robert Preston and Catherine Mary Stewart are a breath of fresh air, wonderfully offsetting Lance Guests' acting deficit. Funnily enough, the deployment of Alex's (Lance Guest) beta unit in the movie makes his primary character feel pretty stable. Until he deploys the Death Blossom that is! Curious? I thought so.

It's Popzara's Movie Time! Podcast!, where our own movie nerds Ethan Brehm and Nate Evans take you on an unscripted journey yakking and chatting about some of their favorite movie moments and cinematic scenes, from past and present, presented without snark and snobbery for your listening pleasure. On deck for this episode are two classics from 1984 (perhaps the greatest year ever for pop cinema) that use videogames as a framing device that take our heroes into larger worlds they could have never possibly imagined. First up is The Last Starfighter, directed by Nick Castle (Halloween's original Michael Myers) and starring Lance Guest, Dan O'Herlihy (RoboCop), and Robert Preston (The Music Man) in a sci-fi fantasy that's more Star Wars-lite than Buck Rogers. One of the first movies to extensively use CGI, it's a perfect encapsulation of Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey, only with space combat and an entire race of aliens with male pattern-baldness (even the women). Next is Cloak & Dagger, Richard Franklin's Hitchcockian thriller starring Henry Thomas (E.T.) and Dabney Coleman (in a dual-role) in what could be the best 1980s kids movie you don't hear enough about. Latchkey kids race from blood-thirsty terrorists as an Atari tape (yeah, tape) may hold the key to an international espionage plot. What more could you expect from writer Tom Holland, creator of Fright Night and Child's Play? Even in a year overflowing with an embarrassment of riches, both movies managed to stand out. Did The Last Starfighter inspire Pixar's Toy Story? Is Cloak & Dagger the most violent movie (made for kids) ever? Could either be rebooted and/or sequalized in today's sensitive times? These questions and more will be answered - no quarters required!

SOUNDTRACK ALLEY has become THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS! Two years ago this month, host and producer Randy Andrews brought his film music podcast SOUNDTRACK ALLEY to the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST. We've enjoyed the partnership immensely and his show has brought a new dimension to the podcast in the form of long-formed reviews and analyses of soundtracks. However, we felt the need to separate our version of the show from the version that he still produces on his own under the SOUNDTRACK ALLEY moniker. Therefore, all SOUNDTRACK ALLEY episodes produced expressly for CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO will now be known as THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS. The format of the show won't change. It will always remain a deep dive review into some of the best soundtracks of all time… scores that everyone should have in their collections… THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS. On this premiere episode of the newly rebranded THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS, host Randy Andrews and Erik Woods talk about the film and score to the 1984 Nick Castle-directed sci-fi/fantasy/adventure film, THE LAST STARFIGHTER, starring Lance Guest, Robert Preston, Dan O'Herlihy, Catherine Mary Stewart, Norman Snow, and Kay E. Kuter. The film tells the story of Alex Rogan, a teenager recruited by an alien defence force to fight in an interstellar war. Randy and Erik also detail the numerous themes in the score, the recording of the soundtrack, the composition and form of the action material, and the heart behind the music, especially the finale cue "Into The Starscape" The original score for the film was composed by Craig Safan and was recorded by Lyle Burbridge in Los Angeles. The original soundtrack recording was originally released on Southern Cross Records both on CD and LP in 1987. Intrada Records expanded the album both in 1995 and 2015. Earlier this year, Intrada released the definitive release of the score featuring the same program as the 2015 version but with greatly improved sound quality. You can buy that version of the album HERE! Thanks to Jason Drury and Tim Burden for their assistance. And a big thanks to Intrada's own Roger Fiegelson for providing the updated album to play on this show for you. Enjoy the program! With Michael Myers returning to cinema screens, we decided it was a good time to go back and look at all the HALLOWEEN films that have come out since John Carpenter's ground breaking film in 1978. Simon and Keith are joined by filmmaker Alistar Clayton, from Turtle Canyon Media, to dissect the films. We talk about the different timelines, reboots and masks of Michael Myers, and we give our thoughts on the new film. So it's time for you to put on your masks and join us for this special episode. (Just a warning that we go into MAJOR SPOILERS on the podcast of these films, including HALLOWEEN 2018) Movie Heaven Movie Hell is a show where filmmakers Simon Aitken (BLOOD + ROSES, POST-ITS, MODERN LOVE) and Keith Eyles (FEAR VIEW, DRIVEN INSANE, CROSSED LINES) go through the A-Z of directors. Simon and Keith talk about their favourite and least favourite film from that director's body of work. Attack of the Killer Soundtrack - Episode 54 This week we welcome special guest co-hosts Catherine Mary Stewart and Lance Guest as we play and discuss some songs featured in their movies over the years as well as some of their favorite soundtracks. So join us as we put together one of the weirdest things to ever be committed to the airwaves, we also discuss… African dance, the orgy scene, showing up on her doorstep, shopping and shooting guns, if you're a hippy… and you’re living in a park in Berlin… you get to go to Heaven with God, they wrote the original code, lots of guitars, I don’t want anything to do with my mom, suck on the mic a lot of the time, a computer the size of a room, there’s a lot going on in every scene in that movie, the change in pop culture, developing of texture mats for the computer rendering of the space scenes, what is this movie?, I always say… it’s not 1973, not 1975… it’s 1974. It’s very specific… the filmmakers… might dispute me on that, The Apple, being lovers all these years, it’s a function of time, the last girl on Earth without a date, convention oversaturation, The Disaster Artist of the Star Wars universe, the rest of you BIM mark idiots are going to be left behind, hey… aren't you the guy in The Last Starfighter, I had to simplify my guitar playing, foraging for nuts in studio city in L.A., the bled on the battlefield for people today, and if you are a politician that advocates abstinence please show your children this movie, a 5 month shoot, you are a savant, over-merchandising and marketization of the film business, non-freaky thing to do, Bernie’s dance, and I sit in the saddle, it’s like Dada performance art, the perfect relationship, growing up as a dancer and a tone-deaf mish-mosh of wait wait what are we doing?! “It’s absolute heaven watching these musicians jam.”

We're back with a back to school themed episode dedicated to the ABC Afterschool Special! We, as we are wont to do, made it a twofer, and chose two episodes starring one of our favorite actors, Lance Guest! The episodes we discuss are Please Don't Hit Me, Mom, and Two Loves for Jenny (aka Between Two Loves)! And if that wasn't enough to get you all excited about chalkboards and backpacks, I interviewed Lance Guest about working on this program, as well as some of his other small screen awesome. You can read that interview on my blog (www.madefortvmayhem.com)! Hooray, and a big thanks to Mr. Guest, who flashed a lot of that charm that made us all fall in love with him in the first place... oh, and he gave some great insight too! Enjoy the podcast and the interview! By the way, the essay I was referencing at the beginning of this episode is titled Premature Adulthood: Alcoholic Moms and Teenage Adults in the ABC Afterschool Special by Amanda Keeler. Great stuff!

The Last Starfighter was the first film to utilize all computer graphics by way of Crays Servers. Some scenes look pretty good but most look downright terrible. The film itself isn't entirely bad but we remembered liking it more as kids.
