In a show packed with the best film music slotted into a 2-hour show, your host Jason Drury begins with music from Alan Silvestri's classic for BACK TO THE FUTURE (Intrada Records), which this year is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Jason then continues with music from recent Archive releases, including Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard's GLADIATOR (La La Land Records), celebrating the score's 25th anniversary; the belated 40th anniversary celebration of Jerry Goldsmith's 1983 classic score for FIRST BLOOD (Intrada Records) and then selections from John Cameron for the 1980 Agatha Christie mystery movie THE MIRROR CRACK'D. Jason then continues the show with music from Henry Mancini's classic score from the classic 1983 mini-series THE THORN BIRDS, which has received a deluxe edition from Varese Sarabande Records, Basil Poledouris' 1990 Australian Western score QUIGLEY DOWN UNDER (Intrada Records) as well as selections from Jerry Goldsmith's 1972 TV movie thriller PURSUIT (Intrada Records), which is a re-recording from a recent Kickstarter campaign initiated by Producer and Orchestrator Leigh Phillips. Jason then rounds off the show with music from the new 2-CD set of Michael Kamen's classic score from the 1993 Disney adaptation of THE THREE MUSKETEERS (Intrada Records). Welcome to Cinematic Sound Radio's celebration of the 35th anniversary of Film Score Monthly. In 1990, a young film music fan named Lukas Kendall began what was to become Film Score Monthly with a Xeroxed newsletter sent to a handful of fans who signed up to receive the snail mail newsletter. From there, the newsletter turned into one of the biggest soundtrack publications in the world. The magazine's run ended in 2005 at 150 issues. It ceased printing due to budgetary reasons. The magazine, however, still lives on in the digital world as FSM On-Line. A byproduct of the magazine was a record label, which began in 1998 with the release of Jerry Goldsmith's STAGECOACH / THE LONER. Lukas would go onto produce 250 FSM CDs, many of them long-sought-after "holy grails." The label would cease production in 2013. The website and popular message board are still running, but are in desperate need of updating. That's where you come in. Lukas is currently raising money on Kickstarter to help fund a brand-new website, message board, book, CD and more! As of the release of this episode on June 20th, 2025, the Kickstarter has reached its initial goal of $25,000 and is currently in its stretch run to raise an additional $25,000. If you've already pledged, thank you, but if you haven't, then please head over to the Kickstarter by CLICKING HERE and donate what you can to help keep this film music institution running smoothly for the next 35 years! To celebrate FSM's 35 years, I'm going to play for you my top five favourite Film Score Monthly CDs of all time, featuring the music of Franz Waxman, Bronislau Kaper, Johnny Green, Stu Phillips, Elmer Bernstein, Alexander Courage and Jerry Goldsmith. Welcome to the first-ever FREE edition of the FRIDAY PLAYLIST. Back in August of 2024, as a way to quickly produce some new content while I worked on the main podcast program, I came up with a weekly segment, exclusive to Patreon, called THE CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO FRIDAY PLAYLIST. Basically, this was to be a revival of my old school Film Music Mix programs, where I played a variety of unrelated cues with commentary. Many of the FRIDAY PLAYLIST episodes feature a 7-10 minute opening commentary about what I was going to play, and then you could sit back and listen to an hour of uninterrupted film music curated by yours truly, as well as members of the Patreon. And in case I couldn't put on a show, other hosts of CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO would step in for me. It was so successful that I spent the vast majority of my podcasting time producing FRIDAY PLAYLIST and, unfortunately, neglecting the main feed. So, I decided to come up with a compromise. Every month, I will attempt to produce two FRIDAY PLAYLIST shows (or other themed programs) a month for the main feed and two shows a month that will live behind the paywall. Those Patreon-exclusive playlists will feature far more interesting cues from hard-to-find scores and commercially unreleased music. If you want to hear those programs, then please head over to OUR PATREON and sign up. Ok, with that out of the way, please enjoy today's episode dedicated to SWORD AND SORCERY films. You'll hear selections from HERCULES (Velazquez), HUNDRA (Morricone), BEOWULF (Silvestri), KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE (Rozsa), THE MISTS OF AVALON (Holdridge), THE SWORD AND THE SORCERER (Whitaker) and HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEY (LoDuca). Deniz Ari: Why Great Product Owners Listen—Communication Lessons from Product Ownership Extremes The Great Product Owner: The Power of Clear Communication Deniz describes a truly exemplary Product Owner who excelled through outstanding communication skills. This PO was an exceptional listener who maintained openness throughout all interactions. They ensured the team thoroughly understood requirements and priorities, always clearly articulating the rationale behind decisions. With a well-defined product vision and transparent prioritization process, this PO successfully bridged the gap between the development team and clients. Deniz emphasizes how this clear communication style naturally fostered team motivation, as everyone understood not just what they were building, but why it mattered. The Bad Product Owner: The Tyrant PO Deniz shares a challenging experience with a problematic Product Owner during what initially appeared to be a straightforward public sector migration project with adequate budget and timeline. Despite these favorable conditions, the situation deteriorated when the PO began pushing the team to work overtime, overstepping boundaries by questioning architectural decisions, and inappropriately assuming Scrum Master responsibilities. Described as a "tyrant" or "despot," this PO exhibited extremely poor communication skills and preferred dictating rather than collaborating. When Deniz attempted to address these issues, the situation became so toxic that it affected Deniz's health, ultimately leading to their decision to leave the project. The PO subsequently claimed no Scrum Master was needed. Deniz reflects that sometimes the best option is to recognize when a situation cannot be changed and to move on. Self-reflection Question: What boundaries would you establish with a dominant Product Owner, and at what point would you decide that the situation cannot be improved? Deniz Ari: Stakeholder Management Rhythms for Successful Scrum Masters Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. For Deniz, successful Scrum Masters create environments with positive team dynamics, easy communication, and a focus on continuous improvement that leads to valuable deliverables. The key indicators include whether team members can speak freely, whether there's trust between team members, and if the team feels like "a safe place to fail." Deniz recommends admitting your own mistakes in front of the team to model vulnerability, continuously observing team interactions, and noticing whether teams openly discuss obstacles. For stakeholder management, Deniz suggests establishing regular catch-up calls with leaders to keep team messages in the conversation and setting up routine discussions with stakeholders to maintain alignment. Featured Retrospective Format for the Week: The Worst Retro Deniz shares a playful yet effective retrospective format called "The Worst Retro," conducted using a MURAL board. The session begins with an energy/mood check to establish the team's current state. Then it moves into three key sections: what team members remember from the sprint, how they could make the next sprint worse, and finally deciding what actions to take next. Deniz explains that the power of this approach lies in using humor to discuss serious problems—by asking how to make things worse, team members can indirectly highlight what's already not working. This format creates an informal, relaxed environment where people feel comfortable addressing challenging topics that might otherwise remain unspoken. Self-reflection Question: How might introducing an element of humor or "reverse thinking" help your team discuss problems they've been avoiding in traditional retrospective formats? [The Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast Recommends]
Deniz Ari: Why Your Process Changes Are Failing—The Stakeholder Alignment Problem Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. Deniz explores the challenges of implementing change in organizations, emphasizing that change is always a long and difficult process requiring patience and trust. Drawing on the Change Curve concept, Deniz shares a personal experience trying to improve project visibility by cleaning up backlogs in JIRA for 10 in-flight projects. Despite good intentions, Deniz found themselves as the only person using the tool, with team members and Product Owners using different systems that better suited their specific needs—POs wanting only high-level items while the development team needed to split items into smaller tasks. Through this experience, Deniz learned the crucial importance of having all stakeholders (Product Owners, development teams, and managers) aligned on using the same tool, and understanding the unique perspectives of each group before implementing process changes. In this episode, we refer to the Change Curve. Self-reflection Question: What changes have you attempted to implement that failed because you didn't fully understand the different needs and perspectives of all stakeholders involved? Deniz Ari: Security Team Breakdown—The Devastating Impact of Poor Product Ownership Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. Deniz shares the story of a security project with a team of eight experienced, senior engineers working on mission-critical systems. Despite initial motivation and clear architectural solutions, the team soon exhibited signs of negative behavior including complaints and criticism. The root cause traced back to frequent Product Owner changes—several within less than a year—and poor client management. Instead of shielding the team, the PO directly transferred stress from clients to the team, demanded overtime, and created unnecessary tension by bringing unfiltered conflicts to the team and requesting excessive details. Deniz emphasizes the importance of avoiding unnecessary tensions, being more political when necessary to protect the team, and being mindful of tone in written communications. Self-reflection Question: In what ways might you be failing to set proper boundaries in your role, and how could establishing clearer limits improve both your effectiveness and your team's performance? Featured Book of the Week: Boundaries by Henrik Cloud Deniz recommends "Boundaries" by Henrik Cloud, a book about human relationships and personal limitations. The book addresses crucial questions: Does your life feel out of control? Do you keep saying yes to everyone? Are you taking responsibility for others' feelings and problems? Have you forgotten your own limitations? Deniz explains how this book helped them learn to say "no" while still considering others' realities and feelings, and understanding why we often struggle with setting boundaries. Deniz highlights that being a Scrum Master involves much more than just processes and methods—it requires healthy personal boundaries. [Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast Recommends]
Deniz Ari: How Intense Delivery Pressure Destroyed Team Trust, Culture, and Brought Burnout Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. Working in the public sector, Deniz faced a challenging situation during a particularly busy winter period when the client wanted to combine multiple major initiatives simultaneously: migration, new features, and security improvements. This led to an oversized team of 25 engineers, which ultimately caused significant problems. The pressure to continuously deliver became overwhelming, breaking team trust and leaving members feeling abandoned. Several team members left, the team culture disintegrated, and cases of burnout emerged. After this difficult experience, Deniz conducted a comprehensive retrospective to process what happened and provide feedback to management about the dangers of excessive pressure in Scrum environments. Self-reflection Question: How might you recognize the early warning signs of team burnout before it reaches a critical point, and what boundaries would you establish to protect your team? The NFL released each team's schedule on Wednesday, which means we now officially know when and where the Eagles will be playing throughout the 2025 season. Sheil is joined by University of Pennsylvania Economics Professor Deniz Selman to discuss the analytics behind the matchups. Deniz and Sheil are perplexed by the schedule makers' decision to have the Eagles and Commanders face off twice in the final three weeks of the season (07:15). Which home games have the most “juice” based on the schedule alone (22:09)? Sheil and Cliff break down which games they think the Eagles will win or lose (53:58). How does Deniz feel about the transition from Kellen Moore to Kevin Patullo, and the Eagles picking up Jordan Davis's fifth-year option (01:19:10)? ‘Where life had no value, and death sometimes had its price. That is why bounty hunters appeared.' For decades, the Italian, or Spaghetti Western, has entertained and thrilled cinema audiences all over the world. Its distinct style, as well as its inventive musical scores, has influenced and inspired actors, filmmakers, and composers. It is a genre that is still enjoyed today by many. This unusual but entertaining ensemble of films influenced not just the western film as we knew it, but also had a lasting effect on many other movies. Some of which were produced long after Italian westerns had ridden off into the proverbial sunset of cinema history. On today's episode, join Jason Drury and special guest Italian Western music expert John Mansell as they uncover the musical delights of this quirky but important collection of sagebrush sagas. The unique musical sounds crafted by the composers you will hear go largely unnoticed and underappreciated today. Enjoy! John Mansell's book, ITALIAN WESTERN: VIOLENT IMAGE, SAVAGE SOUNDTRACK – THE MUSIC OF SPAGHETTI WESTERNS is available now on Amazon. For millions of years, and in some places still today, hunter-gatherers raise competent and capable children. They do this while navigating challenging environments, with predators, dangerous tools, and most notably: without any school. Contemporary societies have created learning environments that are a mismatch with the expectations of our genetic evolution: we weren't meant to sit in boxes all day. The system of compulsory education that spans the globe and shapes our perception of education was designed in the 1700's specifically to create dutiful factory workers for rising nationalism. They were not designed based on human evolution or human needs, but the needs of capitalist entrepreneurs looking to increase obedience and efficient producers of wealth for them. So then, if not in schools, how are we best adapted to learn? What does learning look like in societies without schools? If hunter-gatherers represent the way of life most closely to that which humans evolved in, what do they do to educate their children and prepare them for life as an adult? What can we learn about ourselves by studying these societies? To talk with me about this topic is Dr. Gul Deniz Salali.Dr. Salali is a PhD in Evolutionary Anthropology. Since 2013, she has been conducting anthropological fieldwork with the Mbendjele BaYaka hunter-gatherers in the Congo rainforest, studying their social learning, cooperative childcare practices, and the cultural evolution of their plant knowledge. Her research projects explore the learning of ecological knowledge, childhood and childcare, and cultural evolution in hunter-gatherer communities.Notes:Dr. Gul Deniz Salali WebsiteRaising Tomorrow- BaYaka Hunter-Gatherer Childhoods and Global Perspectives on Child DevelopmentDumbing Us Down by John Taylor GattoSand Talk by Tyson YunkaportaHunt, Gather, ParentMaking by Tim IngoldMothers and Others by Sarah HrdySupport the show

In this powerful episode, Dr. Deniz Ahmadinia unpacks how trauma—especially in childhood—can shape the way we see ourselves, relate to others, and move through the world. She shares how unresolved trauma often lives in the body, not just the mind, and why reconnecting with your physical experience is key to healing. The conversation explores how to build awareness, set boundaries in challenging relationships, and begin reparenting yourself with compassion. It's an honest, insightful look at how self-worth, nervous system regulation, and body-based practices can support deep emotional growth and lasting change.Mentioned in this episode:Quiz midroll 2025Have WeShape build you a better workoutQuiz outro 2025
