Is Maddie's Secret actually a movie about food influencers... or is food just the backdrop? On this special edition of Couch Potatoes, Luca is joined by Bits Nicholas and Nancy DaSilva of Compliments to the Chef to unpack one of the year's most talked-about food films. Together they break down John Early's directorial debut, debate whether its satire of millennial food creators lands, explore its surprising turn into a story about eating disorders and recovery, and ask why critics have been almost universally glowing despite the film's many unresolved questions.Along the way, they dive into Top Chef, Tom Colicchio, influencer culture, restaurant criticism, BuzzFeed nostalgia, Gen Z food videos, and whether Maddie's Secret ultimately has anything meaningful to say about the modern food internet. If you're obsessed with food media, food television, restaurant culture, or the intersection of social media and cooking, this is the conversation you've been waiting for.

A massive offseason news episode covering both the NHL and NBA.Brady Tkachuk is heading to Florida, and I have some thoughts on this trade that might not be popular with Senators fans. I break down why I think Ottawa is actually better off long term, why I don't see Tkachuk as a true number one on a championship roster, and why this fits the Panthers perfectly. Then a run through of NHL offseason news and notes: the Oilers handing out contracts to Connor Murphy and Jason Dickinson with very different grades from me, Bobby McMann signing in Seattle and what it says about the direction of the Kraken, a genuinely interesting trade between Buffalo and San Jose involving Michael Kesserling, and Colorado moving Ross Colton to Nashville in a deal that makes sense for both sides. On the NBA side, Oklahoma City trades Aaron Wiggins to Atlanta in a move that has almost nothing to do with basketball and everything to do with the tax bill. And the NBA Offseason Preview series continues with the Southeast Division, Washington with the number one pick, Miami's Giannis speculation, Charlotte building on a fun season, Orlando's fit issues, and Atlanta looking for that missing piece at the top of the roster. In This Episode:Intro (0:00)Brady Tkachuk traded (1:41)Oilers new Contracts (14:57)Bobby McMann Contract (20:06)Sabres/Sharks Trade (23:54)Predators/Avalanche Trade (27:23)Thunder/Hawks Trade (30:54)NBA Off-Season Preview: SE Division (33:50)Outro (44:45)

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been busy already this offseason, and I am not on board with either move.Darren Raddysh comes over from Tampa Bay in a sign-and-trade for eight years at $8.5 million. He is exactly the type of defenseman Toronto needs on paper, a puck mover who can quarterback a power play, but the term and the dollar amount on a player coming off his one genuinely good NHL season worries me. I break down why this screams desperation more than smart asset management. Then the Leafs hire Jim Hiller as their new head coach, and I am skeptical here too. I look at what he actually did and did not do with the LA Kings, whether the analytics-friendly partnership with Toronto's front office is enough to make this work, and why I think this could be oil and water for a Leafs roster that does not resemble the team Hiller had in LA.Then I kick off the NBA Offseason Preview series with the Atlantic Division, the Brooklyn Nets and the Michael Porter Jr question, the Philadelphia 76ers trying to figure out if Joel Embiid and Paul George still fit the timeline, the Boston Celtics and the swirling Jaylen Brown and Giannis rumors, and the newly crowned champion New York Knicks trying to figure out how to keep this roster together under the second apron.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Three massive sports stories in one episode, and all of them happened within hours of each other. The New York Knicks are NBA Champions for the first time since 1973, and it is one of the best franchise turnaround stories in recent NBA history. I break down how they built this team, what made them so hard to beat, and why Jalen Brunson has cemented himself as one of the greatest Knicks of all time. Plus, what the Spurs need to learn from this loss heading into what should be a fascinating offseason. Then breaking news mid-recordin: John Tortorella is out in Las Vegas. The Golden Knights fire the coach who saved their season and took them to the Stanley Cup Final. I break down whether it is the right call, what it means for Vegas heading into the offseason, and who might be next behind the bench. And the Carolina Hurricanes are Stanley Cup Champions for the second time in franchise history. Rod Brind'Amour gets his ring. Freddie Anderson gets the cup first in one of the most emotional moments of the entire playoffs. And Vegas runs out of steam against a team that was simply better, fresher, and more cohesive when it counted most. Two of the biggest games in sports are happening right now, and there is a lot to break down.Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs walked into Madison Square Garden and delivered another mature veteran performance to pull within one game of the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals. The Spurs are doing something genuinely extraordinary, and I break down exactly what made Game 3 so impressive, and why the Knicks need a serious adjustment before Game 4 if they want to close this thing out at home. Then I turn to the Stanley Cup Final and the massive question hanging over Carolina heading into Game 4 in Las Vegas tonight. Plus, Mitch Marner has been brilliant for Vegas, and I push back on some of the narrative around him that I think has gotten a little out of hand. This is genuinely one of the best stretches of sports in recent memory. But the Thunder have been here before, and I make the case for why Oklahoma City is far from done in this series. Then I turn to the Toronto Raptors, and what a genuinely interesting offseason is setting up for this franchise. There is more to build on from this season than people are giving them credit for, and I lay out what I think the priorities need to be heading into the summer. And the Montreal Canadiens beat the Buffalo Sabres in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference Semi-Final and advance to the Conference Finals. Today on Couch Potatoes, we're breaking down the first six episodes of America's Culinary Cup, the new CBS food competition series hosted by Padma Lakshmi—and her very public post-Top Chef return to the genre. We get into what the show is trying to be, how it stacks up against Top Chef, and whether the high-level talent—from Michelin-starred chefs to James Beard nominees like Buddha Lo, Beverly Kim, and LA's own Keith Corbin—is actually delivering. Then we unpack the competition structure, the early challenges (from meat to sustainability to dessert), and whether the twists and judging system are elevating the show or overcomplicating it.Finally, we get into our hottest takes: who's winning, whether the show has real staying power, and how America's Culinary Cup compares to the current food TV landscape. If you're into Top Chef, food competition shows, or just strong opinions about who should be sent home, this one's for you.

In this special 400th episode, the Rational Reminder hosts reflect on 50 years of index investing and the profound impact it has had on financial markets, investor behavior, and the cost of investing. The episode features a panel moderated by Ben Felix at the New York Stock Exchange—hosted by Vanguard and S&P Dow Jones Indices—bringing together leading voices in the indexing world to explore how passive investing evolved and what it means for the future of capital markets. Ben is joined on the panel by Tim Edwards (S&P Dow Jones Indices), Jim Rowley (Vanguard), and Shelly Antoniewicz (Investment Company Institute) to discuss the mechanics of indexing, the myths surrounding passive investing, and the evidence on how index funds affect markets. They unpack questions about market concentration, price discovery, and whether indexing is changing the structure of capital markets. Key Points From This Episode: (0:00:04) Introduction to the Rational Reminder podcast and the hosts from PWL Capital. (0:00:24) Celebrating the 400th episode and reflecting on nearly eight years of podcasting. (0:01:09) Dan Bortolotti discusses the early days of podcasting and the transition from the Couch Potato podcast. (0:02:11) The rise of podcasts and YouTube as major sources of financial education for investors. (0:02:49) How Rational Reminder grew after Dan ended his previous podcast and the demand for Canadian investing content. (0:03:47) The podcast reaches a record audience with over 384,000 views and downloads in January 2026. (0:04:19) Institutional investors—foundations, endowments, and unions—show increasing interest in PWL's low-cost index approach. (0:06:20) Why indexing can still be a difficult sell for institutional investment committees. (0:08:25) Peer effects in institutional investing: committees often hesitate to adopt strategies that seem unconventional. (0:09:11) 2026 marks 50 years since Vanguard launched the first retail index fund in 1976. (0:10:08) Ben moderates a panel at the New York Stock Exchange on the future of index investing. (0:11:55) Overview of the panel participants from Vanguard, S&P Dow Jones Indices, and the Investment Company Institute. (0:13:07) Discussion of research papers presented at the event examining index investing's market impact. (0:14:32) Historical context: the S&P 500 is currently as concentrated as it was in the mid-1960s. (0:15:36) The largest companies in 1965—AT&T, Kodak, GM, IBM—eventually faded from dominance. (0:17:43) A hidden advantage of cap-weighted indexing: investors automatically own future winners. (0:20:59) Debate about whether today's tech-heavy market concentration differs from past cycles. (0:23:30) The explosion of index funds and ETFs has created thousands of ways to implement passive strategies. (0:26:42) Technical improvements in ETF implementation, including lower tracking error and better hedging. (0:29:02) The "Vanguard Effect": index investing has driven massive reductions in investment fees. (0:29:38) Index funds account for about 23% of total U.S. market capitalization, not the commonly cited 50%. (0:32:48) Evidence suggesting index funds have not increased large-cap concentration in markets. (0:34:25) Passive funds represent only about 1–2% of daily trading activity. (0:36:16) Dispersion in stock returns remains high, meaning opportunities for active management still exist. (0:38:12) Panel begins: defining passive investing and why the term is more complex than it seems. (0:42:13) Who invests in index funds? Millions of households using them primarily for retirement savings. (0:45:22) How advisors and institutions use ETFs to build diversified long-term portfolios. (0:46:19) The surprising role of ETFs in trading and market liquidity. (0:48:30) The proliferation of niche ETFs raises questions about whether indexing has strayed from Bogle's vision. (0:49:49) Academic research offers conflicting views on indexing's effect on market efficiency. (0:52:27) Evidence suggests index fund growth has not increased market volatility. (0:54:25) Dispersion data shows indexing does not eliminate opportunities for stock picking. (0:57:15) Index funds own only about 30% of the U.S. stock market, leaving the majority in active hands. (0:59:42) Historical perspective: high market concentration has occurred before and eventually declined. (1:02:14) Research remains inconclusive about whether indexing harms markets. (1:05:25) Over 20 years, 94% of actively managed U.S. equity mutual funds underperformed the S&P 500. (1:06:20) Post-panel reflections and discussion with the Rational Reminder hosts. It is the first Muppet film where a human is the main protagonist. The film stars Michael Caine as Ebenezer Scrooge alongside Muppet performers Dave Goelz, Steve Whitmire, Jerry Nelson, and Frank Oz. Hackers is a 1995 American crime thriller film directed by Iain Softley and starring Jonny Lee Miller, Angelina Jolie, Jesse Bradford, Matthew Lillard, Laurence Mason, Renoly Santiago, Lorraine Bracco, and Fisher Stevens. The film follows a group of high school hackers and their involvement in an attempted theft. Made in the mid-1990s when the Internet was just starting to become popular among the general public, it reflects the ideals laid out in the Hacker Manifesto quoted in the film: "This is our world now... the world of the electron and the switch... We exist without skin color, without nationality, without religious bias... and you call us criminals... Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity." The film received mixed reviews from critics, and underperformed at the box office upon release, but has gone on to achieve cult classic status. On this episode we celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the cult classic and very underrated teen 80's rom com, THE SURE THING (1985). Plot: College freshman Walter (Gib) Gibson decides to go cross country to visit his friend in California during winter break. Awaiting there is a bikini-clad babe whom his friend assures him is a "sure thing". Meanwhile, Allison, a cute (but somewhat retentive) girl at Gib's college has also decided to head out to Cal. to see her boyfriend during break. Gib and Allison are thrust together on a road trip from hell, and somewhere along the way, they find each others company to be tolerable. Now, what will become of Gib's "sure thing?" The Sure Thing is a 1985 American romantic comedy Christmas road film directed by Rob Reiner and starring John Cusack, Daphne Zuniga, Viveca Lindfors, and Nicollette Sheridan. The film chronicles the cross-country journey of college students Walter Gibson (Cusack) and Alison Bradbury (Zuniga) as they make their way from New England to Los Angeles over Christmas break, each in an effort to meet their ideal romantic match. Released theatrically in the spring of 1985, The Sure Thing received mostly favorable reviews from film critics, who commended it for its traditional comedic structure, with some likening it to a modern version of Frank Capra's It Happened One Night (1934), though Reiner himself stated that the parallels between the two films were unintentional. Andy will walk us through how he went from that, pivoted from residential to commercial construction, and later to focus on downtown.
